How and Why Bloodborne Lost Me

IGN: "A game only gets to make one first impression – and with me, Bloodborne blew it."

NovusTerminus3311d ago

"So I did, for about 12 hours… and I hated it. After beating the Cleric Beast boss, I have no interest in going back for more. This is the story of why."

It took you 12 hours to beat the Cleric Beast? Well... There is your problem.

Cleric Beast is tough, but like all Souls games, no matter what the computer forces you to think, take it slow. Never dive in without thinking.

Nitrowolf23311d ago (Edited 3311d ago )

Funny, it took me like 2 to beat him but that's cause I chose the weakest starting role. Just started a fresh save for another friend, 15 hours wtf is this guy doing. Took me like 30 minutes to beat both cleric and the other boss

XBLSkull3311d ago Show
sinjonezp3311d ago

I bought the game never playing soul games and I enjoyed the combat for the first hour or so...dying wasn't bad...but then something happened. I started saying wait a minute..why do I keep starting waaaaayyyy back here after progression for about 17 minutes? With all enemies regenerated ? I completely understand the gripes and I feel some of the frustrations. I just hope I won't feel the same way and the game becomes rewarding and enjoyable at some point.

thanhgee3311d ago

@XBLSkull

If you think user scores are more accurate than critic reviews then you are delusional.

0/10 "This is liek actual shtest gme on psn rght now, i culd make a better gme with mi p3nis, all u **** playing ths 1v1 me on halo 3, ur all **** that need to play the big boy games AKA barbie horse advanture kthxbye"

0/10 "this game is logic not good not a pc gamer and not worth it so i phot why this game is sont good because is not on pc gamer graphic are crap and the atnosphere too.."

And just because the critics reviewing the game might be souls fan doesn't mean they'll automatically give it a 10/10. If it was a bad game then guess what? They would of given it a bad score.

3311d ago
Dir_en_grey3311d ago

Some people complain it's too hard, but for those who suck they can always just level up first, but some are even too stupid to figure that out I guess...

Bad at action bad at planning bad at figuring stuff out, what else can you actually do? Don't blame the game you are just bad at games in general, is what I want to say to these people.

ravinash3311d ago

Fact is, if your skilful. You can get through the game in one go.
Most normal people will take what they learn from each death to try something different or to see the patterns to find out how to beat the boss.

If you've spent 15 hours trying to beat one boss, that says more about you and your skill than it does about the game.

kpat19823311d ago

@XBLskull

That happens with loads of games, take Titanfall a great game yes but look at the metacritic review scores only 2 mixed out of 68 it's a massive problem with site , always has been

its_JEFF3311d ago

@XBLSkull the reason you don't see his review on Metacritic is cause he didn't review it, he just felt so repulsed by the game he had to post a rant article and talk about it on Twitter. Someone else fro IGN reviewed Bloodborne.

I realize that these games aren't for everybody, but he seems particularly bad at the game. There's a whole thread on it, apparently he didn't even try to conform to the games mechanic, just tried rushing into groups of enemies and wasn't trying to learn from his mistakes... as evident by the fact that I took him to the 12 hr mark before he beat the cleric boss, I'm not very good at games... but he seems even worse!

thekhurg3311d ago

Good for you? Not everyone is a video game master like yourself.

DrJones3310d ago

@Headline

How and why nobody give a ****.

Finalfantasykid3310d ago

@sinjonezp

Make sure to explore the areas fully, you will unlock shortcuts and find better gear ;)

Nitrowolf23310d ago

@thekhurg

It has nothing with being a master, if you are spending 12 hours in the exact same little area with little knowledge about the shortcuts and easy paths, you are doing something very very wrong

wsoutlaw873310d ago

@sinjonezp if you've been going for a while bloodborne and the souls game have lots of shortcuts like doors that only open from one side and ladders to drop so you can skip every up to that point. Also you can just run past pretty much every enemy in the first part of the game after you have explored them. Im going to guess you missed a few hidden paths hiding behind barrels.

I expect this article to get some heat. People on IGN have been raging for hours. I read through it and pretty much came to the conclusion that the guy is a tool. His tone is really bitter and it's weird because he mentions a few difficult games that he plays. In reality, from games aren't nearly as difficult as they get hyped to be. They are just relatively difficult because modern games are far too easy. I jumped into demons souls and beat a lot of the bosses in one try. Imo monster hunter offers a similar level of difficulty and once I mastered the slow combat in that, demons souls was a breeze.

rdgneoz33311d ago

The souls series (and BB) were never really difficult. It's just unforgiving. If you screw up, you'll get punished. Else, the move patterns are pretty easy to see and avoid.

DaReapa3310d ago

"They are just relatively difficult because modern games are far too easy."
I couldn't have quoted a truer statement.

wsoutlaw873310d ago (Edited 3310d ago )

Also in the souls/bb games if you are ever having trouble you can just level up, then its cake.

-Foxtrot3311d ago (Edited 3311d ago )

These are the guys who don't even have a review up for the game yet

Not too mention Dan has been moaning about this game on Twitter.

How did IGN let this happen, a game having his immature opinions on a game genre/series he clearly doesn't like BEFORE his co worker releases the review.

holdmyown833311d ago

WRONG!!! They had one up two days ago. 9.5 or 7

holdmyown833311d ago (Edited 3311d ago )

Wrong post!! My B

pivotplease3310d ago

Yeah the whole situation just seems unprofessional. I would be fine with it if his tone wasn't so posses off and he even takes to offending the game (insulting blood echoes and calling the cleric Brady's arm a masterbation arm). If you take those aspects out and this released AFTER the review as an antithesis of sorts it would have been okay.

wsoutlaw873310d ago

It really is unprofessional and there is no reason they shouldn't have had their review up. Having an opinion article bashing the game before even reviewing it isn't helping the people who think they are biased and don't know what they are doing.

JsonHenry3311d ago

The first time I played a Souls game all I knew about it was that is was supposed to be "hard". Not like Mike Tyson Punch Out hard, but still hard.

After getting killed several times and going back for more I knew I was in love. The Souls series of games are up there with my other all time favorite series like STALKER and Command and Conquer.

But as much as I enjoy it I can see why someone who is more casual wouldn't want to play it. It takes a lot of thought and effort and some people just play games to relax.

TheDrunkenJester3310d ago

I can relax with this game, it sometimes raises my blood pressure haha but when you beat a boss or get past a part or my favorite is when you don't see a bad guy and at the last second successfully dodge when you see him striking from the back and then kill him... such an awesome/scary feeling.

DragonKnight3310d ago

@TheDrunkenJester: That's the impending doom sense. Only two kinds of people have it. Ninjas, and Souls fans. :D

badz1493311d ago (Edited 3311d ago )

so...the article in a nutshell;

"this game is too hard for me, so it sucks!"

pathetic.

he's not a fan of the series, never played any game in the series before from the look of it and he's also not very good at it. but "hey...I'm a journalist and I'm at IGN, so it's not my fault, the game just suck and I'm gonna make an article to whine about it!"

CernaML3311d ago

wtf is even the point of this article? Dude sucks at it plain and simple. Didnt need to write a 10 page essay about it. He should be ashamed to call himself a video game reviewer.

Hell, I work six days a week and barely have time to play games at all anymore. However, even with Bloodborne being my first game in the series, I cannot put it down. Ive learned so much about the game and how to play it I can see why the series is loved by many.

TheDrunkenJester3310d ago (Edited 3310d ago )

Yeah that's about it. The guy went into this game already disliking the difficulty of the Souls games so of coarse he wasn't going to like this.

He said he gave it a solid try, but taking 12 hours to get to the Cleric Beast means you suck and didn't actually try and learn anything from the first 20 times he ran through the level. If you can't memorize enemy location and attack patterns after 12 hours of running through the same area than you're just retarded and didn't actually try to play the game. Doing the same thing over and over expecting different results is the definition of insanity. He needed to try different styles, the whip is great for keeping guys at bay, he didn't mention the molotov's, he probably didn't get the flame thrower from the guy in the window at the Central Yharnam Lamp Post, He didn't mention coop or farming Echoes and leveling up your weapons and skills, he just made fun of the echoes and called them meaningless, well if XP is meaningless to him he has no business playing RPG's... He didn't try at all.

miyamoto3311d ago (Edited 3311d ago )

No. This is IGN post Greg "Do Not Underestimate the Power of PlayStation" Miller and Company's departure.

A sell out gaming website showing its true color now. I knew there is something fishy going on or they would have stayed longer.
But no. Ole enemy is up to no good again.

Like didn't IGN gave it a 9.5 and then now this contradicting opinion. They are totally lost.

Anyway its click bait ignorance. Pay no mind to these clowns.
Don't feed these clowns.

Bloodborne: You wanna die with a man's game not a sissy little game like what they wanna play.

GribbleGrunger3311d ago (Edited 3311d ago )

We haven't had the review from IGN US yet, and this guy isn't reviewing it. The guy who is reviewing it has loved it so far so I'm confident IGN will give it at least 9/10 (I'll take 8.8/10 if I'm wrong).

MyDietEqualsGames3310d ago

The guy is a crybaby. All i was doing was dying and losing blood echoes for the first 3 hours, while still making progress. Guy just needs to leave the nursery and git gud.

TWB3310d ago

IGN has different divisions for different countries. I checked and they even have fi.ign.com for finnish people with their own reviewers.

The first review was from their middle eastern division. Sometimes oppinions can vary between these divisions.

Though some have pointed out that its not even this guy who does the review, so chill.

OB1Biker3311d ago

Getting the game today finally.

Tdmd3310d ago (Edited 3310d ago )

So, it's like: Bloodborne lost me because I'm a wussy and suck at these games.
Bloodborne is not for the faint of heart... This is not the guy reviewing the game, is it?

callahan093310d ago (Edited 3310d ago )

Load times and his personal opinion of not liking the general style of combat in the game are valid concerns for him.

BUT then nearly everything else he said would have never been a problem if he had just found the shortcut to the dark house under the bridge leading to the boss.

It takes like 45 seconds to run back to the boss and you don't even have to fight any enemies, and when you use a lot of blood vials or quicksilver bullets, there are plenty of easy to kill enemies right on that path that always drop more of them.

He spent 12 hours frustratedly going through the entire level the long way and complaining that exploration is not rewarded (it is), you have to go through the entire level to re-try the boss (you don't), you don't have enough blood vials or quicksilver bullets (you do, because once you unlock the shortcut you don't have to use any many to stay alive, because you don't have to backtrack the entire level every time you die, and because just past the shortcut there are easy enemies that drop more of those items every time you kill them), etc.

His entire rant could have never happened and his whole frustration never would have happened if he had just explored better and found the shortcut (it isn't that hard to find) or asked one of his co-workers who was farther into the game for some help or advice. It's pretty obvious that his entire opinion is clouded and deformed because he didn't find, try to find, or ask someone for help in finding the one thing in the game that would have alleviated all of his problems.

MrDead3310d ago

I'm fine with this article, I can't wait for the next one because now he has to write one every time he doesn’t like a high praised game otherwise this 2 page rant is nothing more then worthless click bait.

Christopher3310d ago

***Even as someone who had never played one of From Software’s Souls games for any significant length of time***

It's apparent that these type of games are not for you.

Article is pointless and just telling us that it's a game that's not for you. I don't care what games aren't for you or me or Bob who sits in the corner in just his underwear. I care about how the game plays in comparison to others of the same genre. I've already figured out what type of games I like by playing them.

pheature3310d ago

i just got bloodborne today played it for 3hours and got passed the first 2 bosses the cleric and the graveyard guy.
both where pritty easy.
the hard part for me was finding out where to go and to get there with the gear i needed. like my health regen and cocktails.
this person who reviewd this game, his opinion should not be considered and i will tell you why, he obivously cant play the game so he will obivously give the game a bad score because he is incapable of playing this.
if he could play it and then say, meh, its ok, then yeah i would understand but because he is bad at the actual game, it means he will mark it down bad as if it was the games fault.

for me the game is a 7/10
ppl are just getting excited as we havent had a game like this on ps4 yet.

CryLessGameMore3310d ago

BloodBorne is a great game the person writing this article was raging.

Baba19063309d ago

I killed him with my first try and i am in no way a pro or anything. 12 Hours is insane... i loooove this game. the thing about it is. allways take your time. if u start to rush u will die. take a minute in between mobs if u get tired. they wont respawn if u dont die.

amazing game.

I think I speak for the entire Souls community when I say "Git Gud". Demon's Souls was a pain in the ass on my first playthrough but I kept at it and the game turned out to be my favorite Souls game in terms of gameplay.

If you want to play a From Software game that's more your play-style try Dark Souls II. It's their easiest game by far. If a game isn't your cup of tea then it's not for you, simple as that. There's no need to sugarcoat a salty experience.

The 7 Best Souls-Like Games - Mastering the Challenge

The Souls-like genre remains popular, along with FromSoftware's classics there are many contenders. But which are the best Souls-like games?

toxic-inferno17d ago

Hmm... In my opinion, the 7 best are the 6 made by FromSoftware (DeS, DS1, DS2, DS3, BB and ER), then Lies of P. But each to their own.

kevco3317d ago

Still DS1? You don't feel it's been surpassed yet?

Demon's Souls has the remake of course, but DS1 has surely been outdated?

Smellsforfree17d ago

I think that the DS1 remake is better looking than DS2. The interior lighting matched with the low resolution textures in DS2 is very garish, IMO.

Besides graphics, what do you mean by DS1 being "outdated"? I'm someone who played through Elden Ring and just recently played through the DS series, and as far as gameplay went, there were all very similar.

Cacabunga17d ago

I haven’t played many but Bloodborne and NIOH1 are on top of my list.. had a blast with these 2

toxic-inferno17d ago

For world design and interconnectedness (that's a word, right?) DS1 is yet to be beaten.

jznrpg19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Yes, yes it does. It’s still a great game. Elden Ring isn’t better just different and a bit easier . I like that you have to be aggressive but smart in Bloodborne

thorstein19d ago

I literally replayed it recently and it's better than I remember. I think it's like going back to a beloved book and noticing things I hadn't before.

raWfodog19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Yo! I was getting ready to reply with the exact same four words you started with lol. Yes, I think Bloodborne has withstood the test of time and remains a great game. That’s why all the fans are hoping for a sequel someday. Hoping that we can catch that magic again with a new storyline.

Leeroyw19d ago

Yes. Just replayed it a few days ago. My first Platinum. And yes. I rage quitted so many times and called it BS too when I started. It's tight. The combat is amazing and the lore is rich.

GamingSinceForever18d ago

Elden Ring was easier? I don’t know about that at all. I remember leveling up in Bloodborne and breezing through it. In Elden Ring no matter how powerful I got I was still catching a beat down from every boss.

thorstein18d ago

That's due to scaling enemies. I remember not doing Haligtree untill near the end and having enemies withstand almost a full blast from Azur's Glintstone Staff Comet Azure. My level was quite high.

Melee characters are not fun in that game, especially for the Elden Beast.

Bloodborne's Potential Remaster Continues To Be Sony's Biggest Missed Opportunity

"Sony is missing out on a hugely profitable opportunity by ignoring fan demands for a Bloodborne remaster and PC port," says Ahmed from eXputer.

thorstein47d ago (Edited 47d ago )

Bloodborne came out on the PS4. It is owned by From Software. What missed opportunity? I am sure the people at From Software know what they are doing. Especially since they are hiring devs instead of laying them off.

Maybe do an article about that instead of writing a hit piece on them acting like they don't know how to run their business.

47d ago
-Foxtrot47d ago (Edited 47d ago )

To be fair Hidetaka Miyazaki said in an interview

“Unfortunately, and I’ve said this in other interviews, it’s not in my place to talk about Bloodborne specifically. We simply don’t own the IP at FromSoftware.”

So the ball kind of is in Sonys court, it feels like a missed opportunity because it’s something people really want and Sony just hasn’t really been bothered to get it off the ground. There was rumours it was at one point but it all went silent.

Cacabunga45d ago (Edited 45d ago )

Sony has been missing nothing but opportunities for a few years now.. since GOW release, it’s worrying silence we’ve been getting..

As for Bloodborne, imo it would be too soon to release it because PS4 game still looks phenomenal..

Bloodborne REMAKE I think will be PS6 launch title by Bluepoint. I truly hope so! 2 gens later we can get the same wow effect as Demons Souls.

Eonjay45d ago

He is right because it is Sonys IP but a little further back he also explained that they only work on one game at a time. This means that From must also be available. In other words it could already be in the pipeline. Ecen if that is the case, it's still up to Sony to reveal it when they are ready. As ever, I prefer not to hear about it until it's about 3 to 6 months from releasing.

CrashMania47d ago (Edited 47d ago )

'Bloodborne came out on the PS4. It is owned by From Software'

Actually Sony owns the IP, same with Demon's Souls. I think they'd prefer if From did the work on any future of both of those though, but if Sony wanted to they could have those off to anyone else to work on them, like the DS remake.

thorstein47d ago (Edited 47d ago )

Yeah. Thanks for the info.

But I still think that remasters should wait a generation. And Blue Point did Demon's Souls which was superb.

It can be a huge risk. And I think Hidetaka Miyazaki hinted that it would be a PS6 title. I don't he has no say in what happens, it's a partnership.

--Onilink--46d ago

To be honest, if there is a remake/remaster (not that it needs one) I would prefer someone else to handle it, like they did with Demon Souls

From many perspectives From Soft is an amazing developer, BUT, on a technical level they are far from impressive, both in terms of dated visuals (again, on a technical level, not art/design) and usually poor performance.

And what is the point of a remake/remaster if not to provide a visual and performance enhancement to a game that already nailed the rest?

Michiel198945d ago

@thorstein what huge risk? Part of one of the most well known ip's in gaming nowadays, there's not much risk there when it comes to a remake.

thorstein45d ago

@Michiel

I meant remasters in general are a huge risk, not Bloodborne.

Bloodborne isn't, but I think it's going to be on PS6, like how Demon's Souls went from PS3 to PS5.

Sorry for the confusion.

Thorstein,

Wow, your post seems angry..relax it's an opinion.

And btw, it is on Sony, they have the exclusive right to the game, on top of that, they could have easily, at bare minimum, offered an official 60fps patch, with a few extras and charged people $10 to upgrade or $30-40 for new buyers.

I believe I saw an interview where , FromSoft said it was all up to Sony on a sequel and other dealing with the game.

A "hit peice", that serious huh?..relax lol.
