The Looming Moon of Majora’s Mask: A Telling of Old

Stephanie Burdo of The Koalition writes:
Now that The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is available for 3DS players all around the world, we thought it was time to dive deeper into the game, exploring the phenomenon surrounding its birth along with its unique assemblage into the Zelda series.

The dawn of the millennium was a strange time. In terms of culture, the science fiction craze was thriving. People were inventing strange and aesthetically futuristic technology such as the iMac Flavors and the hybrid car. Music as we knew it had entered into a “cyber phase” with the rise of mainstream techno and electronica. Films such as The Matrix were selling out theaters and it seemed that everyone was very excited to explore “the future.” Along with this new wave of futuristic design, predictions of Y2k or “The Millennium Bug” began to arise and people anxiously feared the arrival of the new year.

This was both and an informative and interesting piece to read. I definitely think it's safe to say the rerelease of this game is a big deal given how quick the special edition new 3DS sold out. I don't recall playing the classic version but i'll definitely pick this up when I get a chance.

Very good retrospective on Major Mask, even though I'm not a fan of the series so much.

Venomousfatman3337d ago

Polarizing or not, Majoras Mask is a great game. Lots of good discussion to come out of playing it.

matthewbatb3337d ago

Picked this game up on launch. It is way too fun for the amount of school work I have.

Romudeth3337d ago

This always seemed like the odd man out in the Zelda world but it's cool that Nintendo took such a risk back then. I'm looking forward to the remastered version since Ocarina was such a fun experience on the 3DS.

ameliabaz3336d ago

Yeah i'm really glad they took the risk too. MM is different than most Zelda games and some people wont like it, but for me it has always been a favorite.

I am a huge Zelda fan and love them all, but for me Ocarina Of Time is the greatest and my second all time favourite game after Final Fantasy VII.

LoveSpuds611d ago (Edited 611d ago )

You sir, have good taste in games :)

I also love all of the Zelda games but I adore Windwaker (Specifically the HD version on WiiU) most of all. It is a close run thing with Breath of the Wild though.

Special mention to Cadence of Hyrule too, what an awesome spin off title that was!

GaboonViper610d ago

Cheers Spuds, yep i love Windwaker too, beautiful artstyle, and i loved sailing and finding all the secrets out there.

blackbeld610d ago

Agreed. For me top 3 of all time is.

1. ocarina of time
2. Final fantasy Vll
3. MGS1

GaboonViper610d ago

Brilliant top 3, would love a MGS1 remake that has been rumoured.

LoveSpuds610d ago

Yup, hard to argue with that top 3 squire, some quality games right there!

-Foxtrot612d ago

Oh gee can't imagine what Number 1 is

....

A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker etc is better than Breath of the Wild.

lockedongamer1612d ago

I respectfully disagree, but they're all great games.

porkChop611d ago

I think it really depends on what you're looking for. If you want a traditional Zelda game then OoT or WW would be better to you. But if you want a Zelda game that really leans into adventure and exploration, and if you want intelligent systems/logic, BotW would be the better game.

I enjoy both. I understand why some people aren't fond of it but for me it was a breath of fresh air that I really needed. I'd become so burnt out on unimaginative games and BotW sort of made me appreciate games again, as weird as that may sound.

godofboobees611d ago

Those are not traditional Zelda games

Crows90610d ago

Right...so let's pretend ocarina of time didnt have exploration, secret dungeons and other secrets. Complex boss mechanics and exploration rewards. At least a traditional Zelda has dungeons.

porkChop610d ago

What point are you attempting to make? At no point did I say that OoT didn't have any of that. However, the level of exploration and sense of adventure are vastly different between OoT and BotW.

Brazz611d ago

Breath of the Wild is overrated as shot, Wind waker is much better.

P_Bomb611d ago

I’m a Link to the Past guy.

MadLad611d ago

Majora's Mask still holds as my favorite to this day, despite being the black sheep of the series.

pietro1212611d ago

I love them all, but Wind Walker, Link to the Past and Minish Cap are my favorites

John_McClane610d ago

Link to the Past was so, so good! Those chickens though! 🤣

The Nintendo 3DS Is Still Totally Worth It Ten Years Later

Half-Glass Gaming: "Production of the 3DS has been discontinued as of September of 2020, but there’s definitely an argument to be made for adopting the system in 2021, especially if you just really like playing awesome video games."
