Dead Or Alive 5: Last Round review – the physics of sexism | Metro

Metro:
Gaming’s most controversial fighter comes to Xbox One and PS4, with upgraded graphics, two new characters, and… a ‘breast physics’ option.

Ask anyone to name the first thing that comes to mind when they think of fighting game franchise Dead Or Alive, and they’re almost certainly going to say ‘boobs’. Or, depending on their feelings on the matter, ‘sexism’. That’s not really a good sign for an almost two decade old franchise, that has always struggled for legitimacy in the face of other more technical fighters. But Dead Or Alive has been making progress, even if this latest release is a very small step along that path.

Why can't we get a game review that just concentrates on the graphics, gameplay and online performance without the need of the reviewer having to present their opinion on social matters.

gamer78043345d ago

Exactly. I'd say MK violence is more controversial than the beauty of the human race but hey that's just me. And I certaintly wouldn't say mk is too violent. It's just the style the game chooses.

Let's not forget that DoA has equal gender fanservice all across the board. Pretty shirtless boys with ripped muscles, masculine shirtless men with ripped muscled, even a dudes decked out in skintight leather, and even a guy in broken handcuffs.

DanielGearSolid3345d ago

Annoying isnt even the word...

Obviously a person interested in this game doesnt care about social justice so why even put in the review

not even gonna click

Yi-Long3345d ago

Actually, I DO care about 'social justice', but that doesn't mean all my entertainment has to be 'politically correct'. Far from it.

I'm perfectly fine with sexuality and violence in my movies, games and books.

In the case of Dead or Alive 5, I'm much more 'offended' and irritated by the non-stop DLC milking.

DanielGearSolid3345d ago

What i meant was they dont care about Social Justice within the game itself

It's a long standing series, well known for its use of sexuality, so including and even highlighting that point in the review of the 5TH installment of the game, is just begging for SJW clicks

Bathyj3345d ago

Because as I said earlier in the week reviewers have no objectivity anymore. I've often said I want a lot less opinion in a review and a bit more hard cold facts.

When I stand on a scale, I dont need the scale telling me I look fat, I should eat less, did I exercise this week or how they feel about the designated hitter rule.

I want my weight. Thats is. A scientific measure, free from opinion, biased, preconceived notions or inflamed hyperbole I got from reading everyone elses opinion on the internet.

When I look at the speed gauge I dont want to be told I should drive slower. Just tell me how quick I'm going.

When I look at my watch I dont need it to tell me Im wasting time posting on N4G. Just tell me the time.

I think you get my point.

But reviewers today seem incapable of just going in with an open mind, leaving their baggage at the door, and just reviewing the game in front of them, not the game they feel it should be.

The fact people say a game was hyped too much but failed to deliver is literal proof that they had a notion in their minds of what the game should be like before they even touched the game.

Just another reason reviews are becoming more and more irrelevant.

Their was a episode in the x files where mulder and scully confront a mad scientist and ask him "why?" He reponds with "Because I can." That just about sums it up.

Harping on dead or alive for its sexualization of females is like harping on mortal kombat for its gore and violence. They're just a part of the franchise. Focus on the actual GAME

DualWielding3345d ago

People seem to understand well enough that people who like Mortal Kombat do not normally condone violence in real life... However people do not seem to be able to understand that just because you like Dead or Alive and enjoy its fanservice does not mean you condone sexual exploitation of women in real life

The 10 Most Expensive Microtransactions And DLC In Games, Ever

From Xfire: "Remember when you'd buy a game and... that was it? You got the full experience by purchasing the full product one time. "

potedude1121d ago

Damn, Train Simulator is costing the big bucks. That game is kinda fun but not if you purchase all the DLC.

Relientk771121d ago

I will never understand why people pay for this crap.

Master of Unlocking1117d ago

"All the DLC - Train Simulator 2020, $10,145"

No wonder we're witnessing an increasing number of ports from PC to consoles, you can't nickel and dime PC owners with all their mods over there, lol

"Legatus Pack - Star Citizen $27,000"

Ouch!

Planet Calypso - Entropia Universe, $6,000,000

WTF...?!

Marie Rose: The making of Dead or Alive's doll-faced superstar

An in-depth interview feature with the developers at Koei Tecmo on the making of, and superstar rise of Marie Rose. From the feature: "For a series infamous for its big-breasted women and pin-up tone to then provide players with an option that so completely embraced cuteness was surely a creative risk. This is particularly true of markets outside of Japan, where people are as a rule far less comfortable with “cute” and “sexy” being in the same proverbial ballpark."
