Big PS4 Firmware Update Around 29 March, Will Have New Features

It seems like the next major PS4 firmware update could be released on or around 29 March, bringing some new features with it.

I'd like to be able to group friends and have folders. I forget about some games because they disappeared from the main bar. Such as Lego marvel.

Settings -> System -> Uncheck "Limit Number of Content Items On Home Screen".

That will keep all of your downloaded games on your home screen.

I would definitely welcome folders and friend grouping though.

Yeah they all goto the library tab which is then filled with any old guff you've downloaded since day one so if a lot of it has now been deleted you had to rummage your way through all that as well.
Let's just pop the switch and the ps1/2 classics on ps4 and do the classic folders and can we have a download list back in the store please, it's the most needed option and don't understand why PS3 will let you look at anything ever downloaded on your profile whilst in the store yet on ps4 to redownload most of my stuff I had to go on the website?! But yeah suspend and resume would be sweet amongst other things at least the games are coming and to be honest once into a good/great game I don't care what my menus/library looks like ;) even so sort it out our Sony.

My totally uneducated guess, is that the problem is with the disc based games. It's probably easier when the game is on the HDD or a card like on the Vita.

I don't see how it would be a legal thing especially since it already has a limited suspend/resume functionality. When you open apps like Netflix it suspends the game and you can resume it later right where you left off. Most likely they have some technical issues for the standby mode where it doesn't work correct.

X1 games run from the hard drive even the disc games. That was the original function they only changed that the disc needs to be inserted like you had on the older PC games.

Ill explain suspend and resume to you guys in a an easy technical sense. It's probably not either legal or disc based games.

Disc based games will load to the console memory when the user selects the game. The game stays in the memory until the application is closed with the new consoles. The older consoles didn't have a lot of memory so they would stream what they could from the disc. Streaming from the disc on the new consoles is also used but not nearly as much. It might be used for say streaming the music and loading additional levels.. but most games these days load from the Hard drive to the memory and stream from the memory mostly for speed and bandwidth as a bdrom/dvdrom/cdrom's bandwidth and speed is limited.

Suspend and resume works where your game is running in memory and it's suspended upon request. The game still stays in the memory but the application that runs the game is froze or shutdown. This takes up a portion of the memory which limit's the size of it. Some modern operating systems might dump this file back to the hdd as an instance but typically it will stay in the memory as once the user calls the game to run again it can instantly boot quick from memory like it was still running.

Operating systems also have similar this feature like this called standby mode or sleep on pc's. Legal issues is highly unlikely as well as the PlayStation uses an open source linux/unix type operating system. It's probably more so just a technical hurdle since the PS4 contains a new operating system and they don't have any software to pull from except for whats on the market or what they make in house. This might take some time. Around a year sounds about right then testing and bugs. I would assume by years end we will see or at least hear about Suspend and resume.

PS4 games aren't read from the disc. The PS4 only needs the disc when you install the game and to start the game it just checks to make sure the disc is in the system.

Folders would be nice, I've only just got a PS4 so I've been catching up on a lot of PS+ and free to play games so it's getting a little cluttered already.

Photo, Video and Music on the system would be nice too. The PS3 had them from the beginning, I'm not sure why the PS4 is lagging behind with those features.

Ps4 has hdmi 1.4. Hdmi 1.4 can pass through 4k video, but their will be a MAJOR drop in framrate. I'm a little shocked ps4 didn't come with hdmi 2.0, since Sony is one of the biggest backers of 4k

You and me both Solid...but since HDMI 1.4 supports 4K @30fps it will not be an issue for movies which run at 24fps.

I realize suspend/resume is important if for no other reason than it was promised awhile back but I personally don't care for it I didn't use it on my Xbox One and won't use it on the PS4. But....The truth is while Sony doesn't do monthly updates because last gen people griped about the frequent updates on the PS3 Sony still has arguably the best 2 features in share play and remote play and neither MS or Nintendo have anything as innovative as those features this gen then there's PS NOW another innovation. So let's not act like Sony hasn't contributed anything to gaming because that's just not true.

That's about all I want as well in addition to maybe being able to disable the light bar especially since Project Morpheus isn't out yet. Suspend/Resume on my X1 is awesome, but honestly I always use it by mistake. I turn my console off, and then I'm surprised when my game is right where I left it. You'd think I'd remember it after a year plus lol.

Sony has had 2 years to work on that suspend/resume feature. I don't understand why it's not here yet. Do they need some motivation? Someone that won't stop until the job is done? Tidux is being Captain Obvious here. Spotify launches on March 29 2015 on PS4 and PS3. The Music Unlimited Service is integrated into the PS4 firmware. The Music Unlimited servies ENDS on March 29 2015. Therefore, the HAS to be an update that day. It doesn't take an insider to figure that out.

What he does do then is create speculation about new features.

Why is that great news? Music unlimited was a good feature.... It could have been like PS3/VITA and supported music both with and without music unlimited but I used the service, google has essentially the same service for the same price called google play music all access, Music unlimited also worked on phones and PC, in addition to playstation which is what made it nicer than google play, I wish somehow they'd get google play music on PS4- because its what I started using since music unlimited was announced as closing.

Well I think it's great news, idk. Must not have been as good as you're saying since they're closing down. I never used it tbh. I don't pay for music services. I have and keep getting plenty more music on my own without paying for a service that doesn't do much more free radio doesn't do. Actually those free radio stations help to sponsor a lot of things in my area. Pandora and Spotify don't do that. To me, it's just one of those things where people "think" they're getting something better. Yes, it's easier to discover music and artists, but so what? That itself isn't saying much. There's never been a buzz about music services like there used to be back in the day with radio stations. And again, they don't promote things locally or do concerts

We can't keep using that as an excuse. We went through it for 8 years with PS3. Sony obviously has to hire a dedicated software development team. They ask us what we want, and they apparently acknowledge our requests. The problem is the wait period between updates. It shouldnt take this long, and it doesn't have to be everything at once. There are still plenty of missing features that they could trickle down to us over time.

Thats kind of extreme isnt it? Do you really fill multiple 2tb hard disks so fast? If so couldnt you just as easily hold off on downloading some content until you're finished with some? 2tb is literally like 30 full size games or say 25 AAA games and 50 indie games.

It was already confirmed a while back that Music Unlimited will be discontinued on March 29th. I GUARANTEE this update is for Spotify, which suits me fine. Sony's service was fine for the PS4, but their phone app was awful and buggy (not to mention hard to navigate), so it was never a contender to Spotify.
