The PS4 And Xbox One Have An 'Exclusive' Problem

The disappointing release of The Order: 1886 has kicked off all sorts of debates and discussions about game length, review scores, ‘cinematic’ gameplay and quick-time events over the past few weeks. It’s a touchstone that can lead to a dissection of many things that ail the gaming industry at present, yet I find myself looking at is as more worrisome evidence that the two biggest players in the console space, PS4 and Xbox One, are losing their touch when it comes to creating and/or cultivating exclusives for their platform.

decrypt3342d ago

TBH the problem with console exclusives is lack of longevity. They dont have mod support hence there are no newer creative ideas, devs to tend to stick with what works. Obviously this is done with the intention to be able to sell DLCs.

Hence console exclusives are usually short lived, I have recently been playing Teamfortress 2 again, i might have over 1000 hours on it now. Yet the game just doesnt get old on PC, different game every 6 months. I think consoles need some of that not to mention they need BC so people can build a library, sadly that probably wont happen since platforms change and devs would hate it if older games were still playable on consoles (Sony MS included).

Godmars2903342d ago

I would think that despite the cult following TF2 has earned due to nearly a decades worth of modding, that it's success has as much to do with it being multiplayer. Nevermind that said modding is largely supplied by the community. Even the stuff advertised through Valve.

Not saying you're not wrong overall, just that the problems of titles like the Order and Ryse stem from direction, focus, and predetermined reaction. The teams who worked on those games where working towards specific goals and under production limitations with excessive goals, whereas TF2 started off as something that was opened ended with on the cheap costs.

decrypt3342d ago

Teams working on Order and Ryse were looking to make games which would sell 60 usd a pop feature strictly corridor type game play with no reply value, sell a couple million then milk the title for DLCs. Too bad for them it doesnt look like its going to work.

Again i think many of today great hits came to be with mods Dayz, Left 4 Dead, Dota, Counter strike, Portal. I think console devs are too restrictive in their approach, almost as if they have a leash around the gamers. Personally i dont see any game released on either console so far this gen that warrants a purchase of any box. They need to give some freedom to the gamers to mod games maybe bring some fresh ideas, stop being greedy on the whole matter with DLCs etc.

Am i the only person who believes a game that's not an open world or fps can be fun and entertaining? I swear evolve got the ultimate pass....so did titan fall. Even (though not a bad game) dragon age won some game of the year awards...though it is full of glitches and has dated combat. Im playing it now and i love it but it still combats like dragonage 2. But let the order come out and its tge bane of existence. Qtes in a clearly story driven game is just the normally ...god of war never lost points for qtes..neither did every naruto game ever.
I dont know im just still baffled of all the hate. I havent played ryse to judge it or comment on it so i wont.
But i will say evolve got a pass because its a fps. And the order didnt because its not.
As if fps or open world games arent over saturated enough. In the gaming world there is still room for liner story driven games...without haveing to out run the police to get to the next part of the story.
they say the qtes breaks the action in a game and it loses points for it but gta didnt lose points for interrupting the story by you having to out run the police before driving for 10 solid minutes to a house in the desert to continue the story.
I swear let the order had been a fps. Same game, same story same weapons. ..but a fps and it would have been a goty candidate.
smh.

@godmars

I actually agree with you on Ryse and the Order. I also think limited budgets played a factor. I believe that as development was going on the projects kept expanding to fit their lofty ambitions and so did their budgets and at some point the games just had to be released. Its the risk involved with making AA games now.

@adzine

You sound upset about something?why?lol. If you have an issue with the article or thumbnail used then you should feel free to send your complaints to the originators (forbes) instead of throwing temper tantrums and calling people names, all that does is make you look kind of silly, petty & immature... learn to handle other peoples opinions without taking it personal. : )

its_JEFF3341d ago

Heeeh...most of those games have great game mechanics with the players required to make their own stories! You're basically asking for a game that you buy once and can play endlessly for years and years. Unfortunately these companies have to make money. They aren't all as lucky as Valve, who BTW is in this business to make money. They just do it in a way that you don't notice. How do you think they've become a multi-billion dollar company? I don't remember when, but GiantBomb was discussing DOTA with brad and they were chatting up something else about Steam... I really don't remeber the details, but the conclusion was that Valve was really good at getting money from Brad and Brad wasn't too happy about it but he still did it.

Kal0psia3341d ago

Question, does anyone enjoy playing games anymore?! Because if anything as a PC gamer who buys consoles for their exclusive games because they're fun, I've been enjoying my time with XOne. I know that's a subjective opinion, but just because Sony had overhyped games doesn't mean you have to drag XOne exclusives into the foray Sony has experiencing with most of their exclusives. On average looking at all the XOne exclusives so far they all achieved a score between 75-85 metacritic.

So can we have an unbias perspective for once and NOT make it seem like XOne exclusives are doing bad, because they aren't folks. Sorry but XOne owners are happy customers with exclusives that are fun and has strong replay value.

Kingthrash3603341d ago

^^^
the problem i have with your comment is how do you know if a fame is overhyped if you never played them.
true you are a xbox owner but are you a ps4 owner?
If no then how do you know if a ps4 exclusive is overhyped? Please god dont say you believe these articles. I have very few reviews i watch...and i only trust angry joe. Anyone who puts together a 45 minute review pointing out things gamers like and dislike deeper than any reviewer out there.

Kal0psia3341d ago (Edited 3341d ago )

^

It is overhyped, nothing wrong with the game if people enjoy it. But reality proves my point that given the hype it was getting (console wars), it is without a doubt a overhyped game. Visually beautiful and for all the good things it has it just doesn't meet the hype. Same thing goes for Titanfall and it's launch. Game was strong for what it was but did not meet the hype, I never played the game until two months ago on PC and I "liked" it. But in comparison to the true and tested shooters, it's not as good and very boring after a week.

My point was for this lame article is the writer dragging XOne exclusives into the recent flak Ps4 exclusives has been gettign so far since Driveclub as if XOne exclusives are doing bad?! No, they've been doing really well with strong replay value and very fun. Have you been playing XOne exclusives to say that I'm not right?! Because if anything the voice of all gamers prove that XOne games so far are better.

It's obvious this is clickbait, this had NOTHING to do with XOne exclusives, and everything to do with how mediocre Sony exclusives been so far since mid last year. The only Ps4 exclusive that I can say is the best so far is The Last of Us because I played that already. So in my honest opinion this article favors Ps4 more than XOne if you see it for what it is. Just my opinion. ;D

Godmars2903341d ago

@Kal0psia:
Think the point is that neither XB1 nor PS4 has yet to offer a title that justifies "next gen". Titles such as Overdrive, Dead Rising, Infamous and the Order have been good but not great in a definitive sense. And something like Forza suffers a case mental gymnastics regarding its specs which the Xbox fan camp willfully ignores as they defend the game and the system its on.

Not saying that the same kind of crap doesn't happen with the PS4, its just that I've ran into too many on the other side who don't seem to be thinking with a clear head.

While I want to be disappointed in current gen gaming, I realize this gen is still very young and many developers are still just getting out of last gen.

Unfortunately I do think we are going to see fewer exclusives this gen because game budgets are bloating exponentially and it just doesn't pay to remain on one console (or just PC). With that said, I am not entirely sure how I would feel about that.

Just give me the games.

kayoss3342d ago (Edited 3342d ago )

Wow, one not so good exclusive and these writers think this gen is a failure.

Big_Game_Hunters3341d ago

far more than one from both camps.

die_fiend3341d ago

Not really.

I can't really think of any particularly good exclusives for either so far. Infamous was decent but short-lived, Titanfall exactly the same.

But this year we have Bloodborne and Uncharted for PS4 and Halo (space COD 1.0) for Xbone. I think I know which camp I'd rather be sat in.

SolidStoner3341d ago

it is kinda crazy.. these people actually dont know nothing about games.. well maybe how to make them, or "know" how to review them...

definitely they dont know how to play them.. and you know what.. great racing drivers are great racing drivers.. but most of them are no car engineers/mechanics..

the point is - driver tell engineers what to do...

we gamers are the drivers... engineers are developers and reviewers who are guilty at mechanical failures! :D

we gamers have to get rid from everything that is bad for gaming..

GokuSolosAll3341d ago

It's still early. New IP is gonna be a toughy but not exclusives. Order and Bloodborn aren't exactly looking like Uncharted or God of War quality but like I said, it's early yet.

thanhgee3341d ago

Bloodborne? You lost me there bud.

Ricegum3341d ago

Why have you thrown Bloodborne in there, when it clearly looks great. Nothing negative about that game so far.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3341d ago (Edited 3341d ago )

Delusional til the end. Using history as the ultimate litmus test, it is quite clear that there is one console that will continue to deliver quality, exclusive content and the other will rely heavily of 3rd parties and multiplatform games. The evidence is there, denying it won't change it, it just makes you look like a nut.

Now for anyone who wants to say that Titanfall is an exclsuive even though it's available on PC and 360, then you must include TLOU Remastered as well as other games to the "exclusives" club.

Lev19033341d ago

Im denying that driveclub (72) and the order(65) delivered quality wise. Saying that SOny delivered quality makes you seem deluded.

You are nuts if you dont see that the SOny exclusive till now were a dissapoitnment(except second son).

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3341d ago (Edited 3341d ago )

@Lev1903

"Im denying that driveclub (72) and the order(65) delivered quality wise. Saying that SOny delivered quality makes you seem deluded."

Question:

Have you ever played anything available on the PS4 or have you done what so many "journalists" have done, which is read a few reviews and watch a video then pretend to be an expert?

Do you even own a PS4?

Your comment history proves ever so clearly who's actually delusional.

Lev19033341d ago (Edited 3341d ago )

I did. I played killzone, knack, second son and driveclub. I owned a PS4 till may 2014 which then i sold it to get a xbox. I occasoianly borrow my friends PS to play. If you dont believe me you can check my username on PSN its its lev1903.

I was planning to get an PS again if the order was more value. I am not spending 400 euros for a 7 hour game without replay value. Mayb when bloodborne gets out. If not definitly when uncharted comes out.

And yes. Between you and i, i am the deluded one ;)

joeorc3341d ago (Edited 3341d ago )

Funny you want to post metacritic data to back up your claim. Hey go right ahead, here let me help you

Release Date: February 20, 2015
Metascore
65
Based on
*69 Critics

User Score
6.7
Based on
*1349 Ratings

Now go look at Uncharted drakes f., and Go look at Ryse and also the new dead or alive. hell any game You will notice something...or you may not but the user reviews have already just in 3 days climbed up from 684 to now over 1300+ not just that but the ironic thing is 3 days ago user review was 5.9 its now D@mn near 6.8!

What's quite telling its already @ over 65+ pro site reviews and still at 65% the game is far from disappointing or as a disaster for Ready at Dawn as some gamers are trying to claim. As a matter of fact its looking like this IP will be building up the franchise that Ready at DAWN AND Sony was looking to build.

rainslacker3341d ago

@Lev

Looking at your trophies it appears you don't play most games more than a few hours anyways. only 2-3 trophies for an overwhelming majority of games on your list. Looks like you played more a couple years ago on the PS3, but even then, not that much. Also didn't see knack or DriveClub on your trophy card. Most games seem to be from PS+ offerings as well...so seems you don't spend much on games anyhow....which can be savvy, with the exception of trading in your PS4 just to buy it again later.

Lev19033340d ago

@ rainslacker I did play knack and driveclub. Driveccub i played at my friends console. Knack i played at my cousins, but i was bored within couple of hours.

I am not a throphy hunter on PS. I am however a achievement hunter. You can check my Xbox Gamertag ;)

What, I thought this was dead after Shawn Layden left Sony. I would definitely pick this up if it's true. I have such great memories of playing the MediEvil games on PS1 and I played the PS4 remake. Such a great and underrated series.

Cacabunga15m ago(Edited 14m ago)

A rumored game at a rumored show.. we’ve seen it all

TiredGamer14m ago

Agreed. The first remake was stylistically beautiful and a very noticeable improvement over the original in every regard. And it was reasonably priced and sustainably developed (i.e. not some mega big budget game that was do or die for the developer).

Zeke681h ago

Thanks for the spoilers... :(

RonnySins1h ago

Another day, another remake. Ugh!

SonyStyled58m ago

If you played the original print I can see your annoyance. I didn’t and probably a lot others the past 20 years.

Was it any good? Would you suggest playing the original print of 2, or suggest the remake? Just wondering because I didn’t play the originals as I had an n64 at the time

TiredGamer18m ago(Edited 13m ago)

I played the first remake and absolutely loved it. The quality of life and control improvements were very noticeable. I tried playing the PS1 original and gave up halfway through at the janky controls.

Expect the same for part 2. The PS1 version is janky as heck, but I would gobble up an improved remake day one.

The beauty of this kind of stuff is that I find myself enjoying more retro gaming today, so a relatively low budget classic remake (call it a single-A release) is exactly what is missing from first party releases in the modern age. I don’t want every game to be an unsustainable AAAA endeavor that is just overwhelming in every regard. Truly miss when game releases could be modest-sized surprises and still be commercially successful/viable.

Bring on more quality classic remakes!

Knightofelemia1h ago

Such a good series I also wish Sony would dust off Wild Arms and Legend of Dargoon even the Legend series needs to see the light again.

Omegasyde36m ago

My bets on new Socom and/or Wolverine (since Deadpool 3 is dropping in the summer).

I think one after this state of play will be PS5 pro preorder
