DirectX 12 Will Bring "New Goodness"to Hardware You Own;"Huge Chunk" of Games Won't Need Custom Work

There has been a lot of discussion on the effects DirectX 12 will bring to existing and new hardware, and Xbox Live Operations Manager Eric Neustadter gave more color on the issue.

DX 12 might help the Xbox more than we originally thought. I wounder if the PS4 will have an API update for Open GL that helps optimization and adds some of the same features as DX 12? I can see both consoles jumping higher in quality just like we saw with the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Bigpappy3372d ago

I have read some tech reports regarding OpenGL and it matching the use of cores the way DX12 will. The consensus is that it will need a complete rewrite. Sense OpenGL is not supported by one entity, it will take a coming together of multiple companies (like NVidia, Intel, AMD, Google, Apple, ...). They will need to fund and take the years to do a full rewrite. May be with that type of backing it will be ready and tested in a couple years.

This is not like bringing PS4 servers back up. Sony simply doesn't have the resource to take on a huge software project like that. They are not really as software company like Google and Apple.

RedDeadLB3372d ago

They don't have to rewrite the entire OpenGL API. Only their rendition which only they are responsible for, so I see similar improvements being made for the PS4 API as we speak.

lifeisgamesok3372d ago

Yes, this is what Carmack was referring to when he said soon Directx will leave OpenGL in the dust

Like it or not, if you guys did some research you would now that...

1- PS4 API its currently lower level acess
2- DX 12 will change that
3- MS knew about dx 12 when they were developing the xbox one thats why all dx 11.2 gpus are upgradable to 12
4- Xbox one gpu wont have all the features os dx 12, you need nvidia 900 series for that and specs arent even finalized
5- MS is still working of dx 12, only new gpus will use all features, xbox one was released in 2013.

"There will be DX 11.1 cards that take advantage of a lot of the driver and software tech that we're bringing in Windows 10, but if you want the full benefits of DX12, you're going to need a DX12 card."

What i mean by this ...is that console player cant expect from a console in this case the xbox to utilize the same features has a 400 euros graphics card.

But yes it will improve xbox performance, its called efficiency not secret sauce.

@Double toasted instead of "!!!" post the article, since i posted the info from MS PR.It wont even phil said he will explain what features are avaiable , yesterday on twitter

SpringHeeledJack3372d ago

I really can't believe yet again people are making things up and hoping DX12 will be some secret sauce for the xbox one. How many times have Microsoft themselves said it won't have much affect when it comes to the xbox. Just stop with this crap.

jhoward5853372d ago (Edited 3372d ago )

@Nekroo91
3- MS knew about dx 12 when they were developing the Xbox one that's why all dx 11.2 gpus are upgradable to 12.

I see some truth in that statement. Why? First off, its a golden rule for a major company to learn from their mistakes. The 360 only supports DirectX 9.0c but with some unique coding MS was able to get it to run dx10. Of course, the 360 doesn't have full DX10 support but they were able to achieve some great things in the graphical department. Games like Bioshock would've look the way it did on the 360 hadn't MS not upgraded DX on the 360. So, its very likely MS wouldn't make that same mistake again.

Now I do agree that X1 will not have full DX12 but it wouldn't be far off from it either.

GameNameFame3372d ago (Edited 3372d ago )

"On the DX12 question, I was asked early on by people if DX12 is gonna dramatically change the graphics capabilities of Xbox One and I said it wouldn’t. "

By Spence himself. On multiple occasion.

Edit. This is so desperate. Yes. Minor changes. Every software update brings up minor changes. LOL. Gotta love x1 fans desperately clining on to this when MS themselves dont even say it.

Even MS engineers when they present it completely exclude X1 when talking about performance boost. Only mention PC.

Especially when if there is even tiny help, it will get ported on heart beat. Just like DX11 was. LOL. PS4 already has lower level API. porting is so much easier in that case.

So it's looking like PlayStation fans a starting to accept that DX12 is going to benefit the X1 much more than they expected. And now the argument is changing to "Sony can do the same thing for PS4. And sure they will make improvements but to think they can achieve what DX12 is doing, sorry it's not going to happen for a number of reasons.

Microsoft have been building DX since the mid 90s DX12 is the culmination of all those years of experience, knowledge and huge investment. New game engines using DX12 are very CPU heavy as we know the X1 has a much more customised CPU and much more CPU offloading. Also going by these tweets from Phill and others to fully utilize DX12 you will need a GPU that fully supports it, these cards are not even out yet, so we can safely assume X1 has hardware from these new GPU's. I'm sure we'll know more at GDC however my feeling is we'll see in these new GPU's and X1 with dedicated processing cores, and high bandwidth memory my feeling is esram combined with move engines =HBM light. We'll see soon enough.

SilentNegotiator3371d ago

DirectX spends most of its time a mile behind OpenGL. Don't worry about OpenGL.

Walker3372d ago

IC TEAM's lastet API update for PS4 will do the same if not better. ICE TEAM is god in terms of graphical optimisations and coding :)

GameNameFame3372d ago

Lol what?

Like cloud? ahahahah.

MS has PR teams working with Devs. Sony devs dont. Devs just say what they believe in.

Andofaus3372d ago

No offence man, but you're delusional if you think Sony can come up with something that comes close to DX12. Microsoft have been developing this for years, together with hardware developers, this is not something you decide to do and have it up and running in a few months. It requires huge investments and expertise from not just Microsoft but also third parties. On top of this Xbox one was designed in parallel to DX12, and Features custom hardware to utilize ALL OF DX12 FEATURES.

nitus103371d ago

If you have ever written software and I have, you should know that it is far easier and cheaper for Sony software developers to optimise OpenGL for the PS4 than for Microsoft software developers to optimise DirectX for all PC architectures and that includes the XB1.

Basically you are saying that Microsoft software developers are better than Sony's software developers. How do you know this, have you looked at the qualifications and expertise of these people?

If you wish to believe that DX12 is some secret sauce then that is your prerogative but even Microsoft PR has said that it won't have a marked improvement on the XB1

I hope this does something for assassin's creed unity.

RedDeadLB3372d ago

Too late for that. If they were to update the PS4 API soon, they'd need Ubisoft to make changes to AC Unity to properly use the improvements they've made.

The problem is Phil dropped a few bombs last night its got nothing to do with misterx to be honest, Misterx posts lot of nonsense most of the time i don't even think he knows what the truth is.

The comment from a twitter fan was not worded weirdly that Phil couldn't understand it.

Explodermouse@ hey phil huge fan.If dx12 requires new hardware for all tweaks to be present how will the x box 1 have full dx12 care to elaborate.

Phil Spencer we knew about directx12 when we build the x box 1.

This came from Phil Spencer what does he mean by that? A rational person looking at that comment of course would be jumping up and down saying what the hell hows the x box 1 getting full directx12? The hardware doesn't exist yet to handle full directx12 So either Phil made a mistake or the Microsoft team done something to the hardware in the x box 1 to enable it to have full direct12x capability.

Playstation fans are often confused about what directx12 does its not just a low access API it improves efficency and performance of the cores. Know API does that yet directx12 is the first of that type even mantle doesn't do that.

TheCommentator3372d ago

Thank you. Everyone knows Microsoft spent a boatload customizing the GPU in XBOX One but noone but them knew how to make it FULL DX12 compatible. It is still speculation but it seems more likely to be true every day. Now if Phil would give us full disclosure we all could argue about something else.

Pretty cool. Should help devs adopt more modern rendering techniques on both PC & Xbox rather than have to target old versions to cover the majority of their users.

Here comes another feature update that resets my settings.

Profchaos1421d ago

If it doesn't delete your files ala 1809 consider it a minor victory

1nsomniac1421d ago

I’ve noticed they do this as well.

I wonder how they legally get away with stealthily resetting all the privacy settings to allow tracking and monitoring without notifying you. It was only by chance I noticed it last time.

1421d ago
Unspoken1421d ago

Any software you use does this unfortunately.

1nsomniac1421d ago (Edited 1421d ago )

I think you’re misunderstanding what happens. All your windows settings remain untouched, it doesn’t change any of your settings accept Those related to your privacy. So all those privacy settings you agreed not to share during the installation and other privacy terms that you agreed not to share, within the privacy options page, even your offline linked windows accounts. It secretly enables all of those options without notifying you that it’s changed your selected options that both parties had agreed to. I don’t think they’ll be allowed to continue to do that under GDPR laws so we’ll see if it happens again. However unfortunately for me being in the UK, we won’t have GDPR laws for much longer after we leave the EU.

I don't have any problems, so the issue is probably someone who thinks Bill Gates has anything to do with the development of Windows in its current form.

Asuka1421d ago (Edited 1421d ago )

As a note: WDDM 2.7 requires you to have updated drivers (which currently no official WQHL driver w/ support is available for Nvidia yet. Only development branch 450.xx). Also you need a 7th gen or newer Intel CPU w/ igpu, or a 10 series or newer Nvidia GPU, or latest AMD offerings.

WGAF1421d ago

Last time I update, the ethernet driver wasnt available so no matter what (even factory reset) I can't go online. The only way to update is to go online lol. Well I always wanted an offline laptop, so I guess got what I wish for :/

Fishy Fingers1421d ago

Use wifi (or tether to the device your posting from now) and download the driver.
