The Batman: Arkham Knight DLC Disaster Nobody is Dicussing

Batman: Arkahm Knight is one of the most anticipated games of 2015 and it’s a game that will probably be great. However, the DLC practices on display with Arkham Knight are downright terrible. The day one DLC for Batman: Arkahm Knight is so anti-consumer, the fact that nobody seems to care is mind-blowing.

Pretty sure the game's DLC has been criticized already. Thing is these were announced last year and the game isn't out until summer. While Evolve is launching in less than a month.

Watch as we get closer to release and WB starts reminding everyone of the pre-order bonuses through trailers and such. People will make more noise as well.

As for the way you conduct yourself in your article, calling everyone hypocrites and cussing like an upset child. Not everyone who is pissed about Evolve's DLC pricing is interested in Batman Akrham Knight, not everyone is even aware about them.

That being said I agree, locking story sections as preorder DLC is a bad thing. But let me ask you this: Where is your article on Dying Light's Be the Zombie mode as preorder DLC, or Gorro in Mortal Kombat X?

Sounds like an OP should be put together on WB's DLC practices.

Fringy3383d ago

Well the purpose of the article was to draw attention to this sort of conduct in general, particularly when it comes to WB Games. However, the reason why I elected to discuss Arkham Knight specifically is because of the retailer exclusive DLC. Day one DLC is always bad but the fact that you MUST pre-order Batman: Arkham Knight from GameStop in order to get the Red Hood story DLC is absurd.

Also, I defined whom I was referring to as hypocrites. I definitely wasn't referring to everybody and I made this pretty clear in the article.
I literally said, "I’m going to give most gamers the benefit of the doubt and just assume they were unaware of this information. It’s hard to find information when barely anybody discussed it and to be fair, it’s not really your fault. However, if you knew about this information, didn’t talk about it, and are currently up in arms about Evolve and it’s DLC nonsense, I’m not going easy on you."
I just thought that made it apparent that I'm not referring to everybody, but specifically people who are singling out Evolve.

Yi-Long3383d ago

The horrible DLC-milking in the Arkham-series has been the reason why I still haven't picked up and played Arkham Origins.

Arkham Asylum started it with a few challenge maps and such. I can live with that. I still waited for a bargain before I bought it though.

Arkham City I received the Statue-version for my birthday, and some of the DLC I got through free codes (in-store, or on fora from people who had a few to spare...)

Decided to wait for a GOTY edition of Origins because of all that DLC, which hasn't come yet, so I guess I won't get to play Origins.

And I'm certainly not going to buy Arkham Knight at launch, considering their history of DLC-milking.

I only buy complete games at full price.

Vote with your wallet.

hades073383d ago

I dont think the Red Hood "story" will be an actual story though. More like a sequence of new challenge missions sequenced together like Arkham City and Origins. Harley Quinn, because its with every preorder may be integrated into the game though as Catwoman was in City.

MrBeatdown3382d ago

I never felt like the Arkham games were lacking.

When buying a game, I try to look at what I am getting, not what I'm not. When looking at a game for what it doesn't have, you can find fault with everything from the shortest of games right up to the GTAs and Skyrims. There has to be a point where gamers can say that developers have given us our money's worth, and that they can put their time into content not available in the base game.

With the Arkham games, I've always felt like I got my money's worth.

It sucks that that pack is GameStop exclusive (although I'm doubtful GS will forever be the only place to get it), but I don't think the main game will feel like an incomplete product because of it.

Palitera3383d ago (Edited 3383d ago )

1. Gamers are gullible, passive and childish. They do not criticize products they like. Batman franchise is perfect, Sony is perfect, MS is the devil, you can't like Titanfall. If Sony did anything wrong, "they'te getting it right, wait". If MS does the same, "that's outraging"! Naughty Dog puts pay to win on TLOU. Did a s***storm happen? Blablabla.
So no. The fact that it is bad and anti consumerist doesn't mean that it will be criticized.

2. 1 works for small, irrelevant blogs, that survive on headlines and clicks. Big companies (IGN, Gamespot, Activision, EA) don't criticize big companies (EA, Activision, Gamespot, IGN). Period. They support each other on their uber crap and keep each other screwing consumers as much as possible.

3. It will get worse. Dying Light hides a full game mode and calls it a preorder "bonus".

4. I can't wait for piracy to become an option again.

Yi-Long3383d ago (Edited 3383d ago )

I've been a gamer all my life. I've never accepted DLC-milking. I've never supported it. So please don't call me gullible.

I ACTIVELY pay LESS for games who are doing the DLC-milking. I go absolutely out of my way to NOT buy it at launch, NOT buy it for full price, in many cases waiting for a heavily discounted complete version to be released. IF I'm still interested in the game by then. Often, that interest wanes after a year orso.

And like I said, I'm a gamer, not a fanboy. I think it's a terrible practices, regardless of who's doing it.

The Witcher III WILL be a complete game, so I WILL support that, on day one, for full price.

Allsystemgamer3383d ago (Edited 3383d ago )

aww that's cute completely ignoring what Microsoft does to scam people to fit your agenda.

Sad really. Making a peice I plastic the centre of your life.

You literally just invalidated your argument!

"Gamers done criticize the products they like" - bashes Sony and ignores MS completely.

Palitera3383d ago

Yi-Long, not all gamers, but most of them. The vaaaast majority, actually. The industry is not the way it is by accident.

Allsystemgamer, I see that criticizing gamers' lenience towards Sony offended you. Once again, it doesn't seem to be an accident...

DragonKnight3383d ago

@Palitera: You don't see that Allsystemgamer has correctly pointed out the hypocrisy of your statement. Your statement isn't "correct" because you think Allsystemgamer got butthurt that you called out Sony. You are guilty of everything you said and the fact you had to center your enmity on one company, then get defensive proves it.

Palitera3383d ago (Edited 3383d ago )

Derp. I'm not talking about Sony, nor I am defending MS.
I'm referring exclusively to bigotry. Never I said that MS is innocent or that Sony is a scammer (see 1.2.2?).

I stand mostly neutral about these companies practices, with a HUGE preference towards PS, my main platform for more than a decade. That doesn't mean, though, that I go full blind zealot mode as most people here do.

Damn, some (most) people here get so touchy when Sony is not licked in a comment and you are just another one of them. If I didn't show blind eternal love for Sony, I'm surely a fanboy or a hater? smh

DragonKnight3383d ago

@Palitera: Let me quote you.

And

"Allsystemgamer, I see that criticizing gamers' lenience towards Sony offended you. Once again, it doesn't seem to be an accident..."

Then...

"I'm not talking about Sony..."

But...

"Damn, some (most) people here get so touchy when Sony is not licked in a comment and you are just another one of them. If I didn't show blind eternal love for Sony, I'm surely a fanboy or a hater? smh"

So we see here that you're A) A liar (not talking about Sony) B) Likely a troll. C) Ignorant. D) Insulting. E) Definitely part of the problem.

It has nothing to do with having blind loyalty to Sony. This whole article had nothing to do with Sony. You brought Sony up for no reason, said that people blindly defend them, continued on the Sony hate comments, and did so with a complete lack of self-awareness. You fit the bill entirely. Derp.

I remember WB and Rocksteady got raked over the coals for locking the Catwoman sections out of Arkham City... Nowdays it's standard practice.

But hey, it's their business and they can sell whatever they damn well please - especially when it comes to Batman.
If you don't like it, don't buy it... or just wait for the inevitable GotY edition.

HollowZbankai3383d ago

think of it like this.....the damn dlc will already be damn near perfect and could very well be shipped with the actual retail release, no? i see no need to charge ppl extra lol. very bad buissness practice that needs to die now

ifistbrowni3383d ago (Edited 3383d ago )

It's annoying to some, yes.. But, there was never a doubt in my mind that I was pre-ordering this game and playing it day 1 (Batman is my all time favorite).

Plus, maybe the fans of Batman are use to it. You only got the Catwoman DLC in Arkham City for pre-ordering/buying new. They also chopped up the Batman suit skins and labeled them on things like "NOS" energy drink.

I just hope that Arkham Knight supports story DLC. Those arena's get so annoying, especially when you play through them with each of the characters to collect all trophy/achievements.

joab7773382d ago

We only have ourselves to blame. I have no problem with previous order exclusives. Companies pay to lure ppl to their store. It's added content but not core content. Yeah, we want it and r pissed b/c we love the game or don't wanna buy it where the dlc is offered. It's doing exactly what it's supposed to.

We can bitch everytime and store has a sale on anything or offers a product that another does not. The problem is perspective. We assume we have the right to everything made for one price. Not true. We have the right to buy it and to buy it where we want. Thats it. We have the right to support the devs and the games we love, or not.

Obviously, we have chosen to place the preorders, to buy the dlc and season passes. If we didnt, they would be doing this.It never affects me really. I buy what I want if I feel it's worth the price. If I dont, I spend my money elsewhere.

I like DLC. The better it is, the more I want.

"Thousands upon thousands of people within the gaming community are currently outraged and furious with 2K and Turtle Rock over the DLC practices currently plaguing Evolve..." I just curious where you were referencing "Thousands upon thousands" from.

I visit Steam, Evolve is ranked 6th (was 5th) and 11th (was 13th) on Steam's Top sellers list, likely meaning that a bundled edition of Evolve is also selling well too. I don't think that outrage is translating correctly, lol. You're not suppose to buy a video game when outraged, lmfao.

"If you do not pre-order Batman: Arkham Knight from GameStop or it’s other worldwide subsidiaries such as EB Games, you cannot gain access to a substantial piece of story content clearly developed prior to launch."......okay. Substantial?!?! Quinn?!?

"It’s bad enough that one piece of story content is being barred from those who choose not to pre-order, but you’re actively being punished by WB Games and GameStop if you choose to pre-order Batman: Arkham Knight from any store that isn’t GameStop. They’re limiting your options, plain and simple."

So? You can't have your cake and eat it too, lol. WB's fans who pre-order are given an incentive to pre-order. They're treated with DLC. They're treated better. That's the purpose of all incentives, lol.

"Day one DLC has already infected it’s way into gaming and now retailer exclusive content is on it’s way."

So much pettiness in long form writing, lol.

Don't buy Batman then, if that's how you feel. That was easy.

If you like video games, you waste a lot of words on crap that doesn't matter.

Bad game design matters.
Bad stories matter.
Pre-order DLC....doesn't matter, lol.

The video game, which is entertainment, is called Batman: Arkham Knight. You're Batman, lol.

Not Harley Quinn. If the video game was called Harley Quinn and she was pre-order DLC, that be a laughable issue.

But you're Batman, lol.

Nonetheless, you're free to complain about why you disagree about your pettiness that Harley Quinn DLC or Red Hood DLC is vital to Batman Arkham Knight.

Who wants to pay attention Batman's actual story with Harley Quinn and Red Hood DLC in the wild.

DarkOcelet3383d ago

Look, if the preorder DLC is cosmetic then it's cool, but if it links to the game's story (Mass effect 3 DLC) then its BS. Harley Quinn and Red Hood are very important part of the Arkahm game series and play a role in the game so they should have been in the game. End of story.

AKissFromDaddy3383d ago (Edited 3383d ago )

"Harley Quinn and Red Hood are very important part of the Arkahm game series..." to you and everyone who empathizes alongside you.

That's like your opinion maaaaan, lol

"they should have been in the game. End of story."
Oh my bad. I have different opinion and I didn't realize the story ended with your opinion. I apologize. Please forgive me. I'm sorry, lmfao.

What was I thinking writing a comment about what matters and pettiness? lol crazy right? (I'm dead)

I mean comments like "so they should have been in the game. End of story" are irrefutable.

That's God-Like refutation. Why?....because "they should have been in the game. End of story" LOL

Damn sir,...you've done it again. Splendid. (British accent)

AKissFromDaddy3383d ago

Oh shoot...I'm a fan. What happens next? Lol.

DragonKnight3383d ago

Dude, you're a part of the problem. You literally let companies nickle and dime you and you are the reason DLC is in the bad position it is. You have absolutely no standards, no concept of value, and that's very ironic considering you mentioned Steam, meaning you're a PC gamer and most PC gamers can do nothing but complain about almost everything and gloat about value on the platform.

You sound like the kind of person who'd happily buy a game that has half the game locked behind pre-order DLC and the only place you can pre-order it is on the other side of your country. A true Corporate Commander Crony if there ever was one.

Do gamers a favour and stop ruining it for us.

AKissFromDaddy3383d ago (Edited 3383d ago )

That's weird. I didn't know I represented the gaming market. My dollars go farther than I thought. If that's so, I'll continue to buy DLC that I want and preorder games that I like. Bow before the almighty dollar, lmfao. Enjoy boycotting games and not playing DLC. I don't want any part of that, lol.

"You have absolutely no standards, no concept of value,"...that aligns with what you like, lol. If I don't agree with you I don't standards or concepts of value,...all from disagreeing with you? Sweet Jesus, that's awesome then. I'll play Batman and it's DLC, which is of value to me, and you'll skip based on your standards and concept of value. That's already sounds more appealing and fun. Ohhhh, not playing Batman is so awesome, lmfao. Priceless.

I am a PC gamer (plus console gamer lol) and I didn't know you most of the 60 million+ accounts on Steam. You know a lot of people. I'm jelly. I mean with all the complaints about Evolve's DLC, that pushed it to the top seller list for position #6 and #11, which means a bundled version is also selling well. All that complaining yet it still sells well? Gotta complain more, lmfao. Year after year, COD remains best selling video game in North America, even though it launches in November, lmfao. You're WINNING, lol.

"You sound like the kind of person who'd happily buy a game that was half the game locked behind pre-order DLC and the only place you can pre-order it is on the other side of your country."
I don't have any quarrels with that at all, lol. It's my money, not yours, and I buy games I like, ignore games I don't. It's entertainment, so I'll pay for shipping, lol. I don't care in the slightest for pre-order DLC. I want the game, lol.

You can petty towards what I purchase and dislike me for it all that you desire to. I invite your hate,...I take it all in as Corporate Commander Crony.

Focus on DLC and stay petty because it's yummy in tummy.

"Do gamers a favor and stop ruining it for us."
Thank goodness your a opinion is such a minority, lol. Batman is going to sell...BOAT LOADS of copies....Millions of copies.

Please stick to your "standards and concept of value" and never play Batman, lol

DLC....lmfao. Gold!!!!!!!!

DragonKnight3382d ago (Edited 3382d ago )

Your sarcasm is incredibly lame. Like seriously, did you get some kid to type this out for you? Probably not, they'd be able to express sarcasm better.

Anyway, let's address your non-points.

"and I didn't know you most of the 60 million+ accounts on Steam."

What is this even supposed to mean? Did school just get out and you decided to type this up? Not doing well in English class are we?

"You know a lot of people. I'm jelly. I mean with all the complaints about Evolve's DLC..."

And

"Year after year, COD remains best selling video game in North America, even though it launches in November, lmfao."

A) This is because there are a lot of people like you with no concept of value, no standards, and absolute no will power who will bend over for every corporation there is. You're the kind of person that would spend $50 on a cup of coffee because it's from Starbucks and you think that means it's good, the kind of person that would say McDonald's is literally the best food in the world because it serves billions and a 5-Star restaurant is the worst because it doesn't, all while you'd very hilariously accept it if McDonald's started charging the same prices for their heat lamp heated semi-cooked food that a 5-Star restaurant would for their fresh, fully cooked gourmet meals.

B) Oh wow, North America? Damn, I'd better alert every developer that lives in Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia that their work doesn't matter and their lives don't matter because one game that sells to people like you does so well in one part of the world so it doesn't matter that the world is 7 billion people when the 350 million people of the U.S., most of whom still don't buy CoD, are making CoD so successful. Who would have thought that a twitch shooter so easy an 8 year old can play it would do well in the gun capital of the world? Got me there bud.

"You can petty towards what I purchase and dislike me for it all that you desire to. I invite your hate,...I take it all in as Corporate Commander Crony."

I'm actually convinced now that you're 13 and don't anything. You don't care because your mom is the one with no backbone in raising you and just spoils you rotten with whatever you want.

"Thank goodness your a opinion is such a minority, lol. Batman is going to sell...BOAT LOADS of copies....Millions of copies.

Please stick to your "standards and concept of value" and never play Batman, lol

DLC....lmfao. Gold!!!!!!!!"

Definitely convinced you're a kid. I've never seen someone type "lol" so much in my life. Which means I'm wrong about a kid being able to express sarcasm better than you.

AKissFromDaddy3382d ago

"Your sarcasm is incredibly lame. Like seriously, did you get some kid to type this out for you?"
They charge me $4.99 an hour. I"ll pay more for a professional version.

"Probably not, they'd be able to express sarcasm better." You'd likely be disappointed, lol

"What is this even supposed to mean? Did school just get out and you decided to type this up? Not doing well in English class are we?" Hell naw...English is like my fifth language. I can't master all of it. (frowns).

"A) This is because there are a lot of people like you with no concept of value, no standards, and absolute no will power who will bend over for every corporation there is." So?....That's like your opinion maaaaan, lol.

"You're the kind of person that would spend $50 on a cup of coffee because it's from Starbucks and you think that means it's good" I don't drink coffee, stains the teeth, but if it was good, I'd buy it. My $50 coffee doesn't impact you at all.

"the kind of person that would say McDonald's is literally the best food in the world because it serves billions and a 5-Star restaurant is the worst because it doesn't"
That makes no almost no sense, lol. The difference is I'm not petty about the people who eat at McDonalds with their money. Think about it.

"all while you'd very hilariously accept it if McDonald's started charging the same prices for their heat lamp heated semi-cooked food that a 5-Star restaurant would for their fresh, fully cooked gourmet meals." You're comparing food to Downloadable content? Edibles to entertainment? lol. Keep'em coming. Don't stop.

"Oh wow, North America? Damn, I'd better alert every developer that lives in Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia that their work doesn't matter and their lives don't matter because one game that sells to people like you does so well in one part of the world so it doesn't matter that the world is 7 billion people when the 350 million people of the U.S., most of whom still don't buy CoD, are making CoD so successful."
That's a really, really, really, really long sentence, lol. Nonetheless, I have the all the developers contacts, in case you need to sent one email to all of them. Just hit me up, lol.

I write about N.America, you write about the world, lol. Interesting, lol.

"Who would have thought that a twitch shooter so easy an 8 year old can play it would do well in the gun capital of the world? Got me there bud." Right? Every year with no brakes.

"I'm actually convinced now that you're 13 and don't anything." Now, who decided to type this up? Who's not doing well in English class now? lmfao

"You don't care because your mom is the one with no backbone in raising you and just spoils you rotten with whatever you want." C'mon...tell me how you really feel. Don't hold back. I'm learning so much about my mother, lol.

"Definitely convinced you're a kid." I'll never tell, lol.

"I've never seen someone type "lol" so much in my life." We all see new things sometimes, lol.

"Which means I'm wrong about a kid being able to express sarcasm better than you." Bingo. That's great introspection. You're truly impressive (bows),lol.

DragonKnight3382d ago

BlackCountryBob4d ago

Great, loved the first game and happy a sequel is coming but after such a lengthy development, are Telltale gonna be releasing it episodic with non specific time delays between episodes? If it is episodic, they need to have a full set of dates laid out for every episode so we know what we are getting & when like Resident Evil Revelations 2 did, buying episode 1 and not knowing when the rest will come is just unacceptable in 2024.
