The Batman: Arkham Knight DLC Disaster Nobody is Dicussing

Batman: Arkahm Knight is one of the most anticipated games of 2015 and it’s a game that will probably be great. However, the DLC practices on display with Arkham Knight are downright terrible. The day one DLC for Batman: Arkahm Knight is so anti-consumer, the fact that nobody seems to care is mind-blowing.

Pretty sure the game's DLC has been criticized already. Thing is these were announced last year and the game isn't out until summer. While Evolve is launching in less than a month.

Watch as we get closer to release and WB starts reminding everyone of the pre-order bonuses through trailers and such. People will make more noise as well.

As for the way you conduct yourself in your article, calling everyone hypocrites and cussing like an upset child. Not everyone who is pissed about Evolve's DLC pricing is interested in Batman Akrham Knight, not everyone is even aware about them.

That being said I agree, locking story sections as preorder DLC is a bad thing. But let me ask you this: Where is your article on Dying Light's Be the Zombie mode as preorder DLC, or Gorro in Mortal Kombat X?

Well the purpose of the article was to draw attention to this sort of conduct in general, particularly when it comes to WB Games. However, the reason why I elected to discuss Arkham Knight specifically is because of the retailer exclusive DLC. Day one DLC is always bad but the fact that you MUST pre-order Batman: Arkham Knight from GameStop in order to get the Red Hood story DLC is absurd.

Also, I defined whom I was referring to as hypocrites. I definitely wasn't referring to everybody and I made this pretty clear in the article.
I literally said, "I’m going to give most gamers the benefit of the doubt and just assume they were unaware of this information. It’s hard to find information when barely anybody discussed it and to be fair, it’s not really your fault. However, if you knew about this information, didn’t talk about it, and are currently up in arms about Evolve and it’s DLC nonsense, I’m not going easy on you."
I just thought that made it apparent that I'm not referring to everybody, but specifically people who are singling out Evolve.

The horrible DLC-milking in the Arkham-series has been the reason why I still haven't picked up and played Arkham Origins.

Arkham Asylum started it with a few challenge maps and such. I can live with that. I still waited for a bargain before I bought it though.

Arkham City I received the Statue-version for my birthday, and some of the DLC I got through free codes (in-store, or on fora from people who had a few to spare...)

Decided to wait for a GOTY edition of Origins because of all that DLC, which hasn't come yet, so I guess I won't get to play Origins.

And I'm certainly not going to buy Arkham Knight at launch, considering their history of DLC-milking.

I only buy complete games at full price.

I dont think the Red Hood "story" will be an actual story though. More like a sequence of new challenge missions sequenced together like Arkham City and Origins. Harley Quinn, because its with every preorder may be integrated into the game though as Catwoman was in City.

I never felt like the Arkham games were lacking.

When buying a game, I try to look at what I am getting, not what I'm not. When looking at a game for what it doesn't have, you can find fault with everything from the shortest of games right up to the GTAs and Skyrims. There has to be a point where gamers can say that developers have given us our money's worth, and that they can put their time into content not available in the base game.

With the Arkham games, I've always felt like I got my money's worth.

It sucks that that pack is GameStop exclusive (although I'm doubtful GS will forever be the only place to get it), but I don't think the main game will feel like an incomplete product because of it.

I've been a gamer all my life. I've never accepted DLC-milking. I've never supported it. So please don't call me gullible.

I ACTIVELY pay LESS for games who are doing the DLC-milking. I go absolutely out of my way to NOT buy it at launch, NOT buy it for full price, in many cases waiting for a heavily discounted complete version to be released. IF I'm still interested in the game by then. Often, that interest wanes after a year orso.

It's annoying to some, yes.. But, there was never a doubt in my mind that I was pre-ordering this game and playing it day 1 (Batman is my all time favorite).

Plus, maybe the fans of Batman are use to it. You only got the Catwoman DLC in Arkham City for pre-ordering/buying new. They also chopped up the Batman suit skins and labeled them on things like "NOS" energy drink.

I just hope that Arkham Knight supports story DLC. Those arena's get so annoying, especially when you play through them with each of the characters to collect all trophy/achievements.

We only have ourselves to blame. I have no problem with previous order exclusives. Companies pay to lure ppl to their store. It's added content but not core content. Yeah, we want it and r pissed b/c we love the game or don't wanna buy it where the dlc is offered. It's doing exactly what it's supposed to.

Rocksteady is very clever with the integration of story DLC, like Catwoman in Arkham City. Their significant contributions to Batman's story usually connect through cutscenes, however wherever the character comes from or goes to is where the gameplay is, which is usually all you miss out on.

It's actually less of a pre order DLC and more of a pre owned resale deterrent. This is just to ensure the company still makes a profit. Each DLC pack will likely cost $5 and only make the difference between buying a new copy of the game or buying it pre owned.

It's also likely that it's not actually day one but brand new copies of the game.

Preorder bonuses have existed for years, enough already. Companies can sell their stuff however they want. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Games prices have been the same for almost 10 years now. Instead of raising the price to $70, they get their money through other means .... DLC.

If the author actually bothered reading the comment sections for the articles discussing the retailer exclusive DLC he'd know that there were plenty of people criticizing the practice, and refusing to preorder from Gamestop. Most people will preorder the game because they love the franchise or are interested the core gameplay, not just for some DLC that will most likely be included with the game at some point. Same reason people will preorder Evolve. Being a highly anticipated game has nothing to do with how people feel about retailer exclusive content.

Believe it or not, many people pre-order with absolutely no thought about whatever DLC they'd get from doing so. The likes you're talking about don't have to be liking the practice, it could be liking the character, and DLC has nothing to do with seeing game footage, loving the game, and anticipating the game. DLC practices in general is just out right getting out of hand. I understand if the DLC is some additional add ons that dont affect the story of the game, thats fine by me. But if you're locking a part of the story that should be on the game, then i have a problem. Developers are trying to push uncompleted games out to the public on purpose with a $60 price tag. They then try to milk you by adding DLC to the game. By the time you get all the story to a game, you could be spending over $100 on said game.
1. said DLC should not be on disk at launch. If it is and i bought it at launch. THat DLC is rightfully mine since i paid for the content of that disk.
2. DLC should never be locked if its part of the story of said game.
3. DLC should never use to unlock different mode of gameplay.
4. DLC should be additional and optional addons (different weapons, different costumes, exlusive characters that doesnt affect storyline, etc...)

I understand where you and many others are coming from and I sympathise but, and I know this isn't gonna be popular, a lot of this DLC criticism depends on subjectivity and the assumption that content which is being used to encourage pre-orders would have been given to you with your initial purchase if DLC was 'illegal/banned' or whatever. There's a good chance a lot of this content wouldn't even exist.

In order to really put the boot into publishers (and believe me I'd like to), we'd have to know for sure that originally planned, essential content was cut. We'd also have to know whether the game minus its DLC content 'isn't whole'. Highly arguable, especially in this instance where the standard game probably gives you 10-12 hours of main campaign and another 15 in side quests plus challenge maps.

Taking your points.

1. Not sure how the delivery of the DLC changes its 'moral correctness'. They use the disk mechanic to simplify things.

2. DLC often deliberately contains story content precisely because it makes it more appealing and they want to sell you it. It doesn't necessarily mean it was always part of the initial plan or that it's essential to the overall game, therefore it's difficult to know whether it was 'taken out'.

3. Same as above.

TL;DR This Harley Quinn content probably wouldn't actually exist (an assumption of course) if it weren't for the business practice of DLC. Which leaves us where exactly? Wishing for extra content not to be made just because it's irritating to see shiny things locked behind a pre-order wall?

This is messed up. especially considering the game was delayed because it was unfinished. now i'm hearing that they have developed content i won't even get to play, so how do we benefit from the delay at all.

The AAA Market is going WAY downhill this is why I am pretty much turing my back on third party publishers and will only support smaller more trustworthy developers with my money.
Screw this game I lost interest as soon as I heard they where pushing for parity.

People can always waits for the Goty edition (or whatever it's called). Not me though, i'm a victim of the hype i created myself for this game.

There will always be that other guy like me who want to play the game's full content as all cost. That why these pre-order/day 1 dlc practices are still out and about.

People who put money down on a product prior to its release deserve special content not available to those who don't. You don't deserve the same dlc story pack I get when I'm there picking up the game on day one after showing my support by preordering the game. I deserve something special, you deserve nothing.

It's all moot anyway as games aren't that damn expensive. I mean how many games are some of U ppl buying in a year? If you are concerned over their cost with or without all this dlc, U need to find a better source of income or find another hobby, gaming might not be for u.

See, you're the perfect consumer in the eyes of companies. You turn on your fellow gamers and actually defend day one DLC by saying things like, "You don't deserve access to content developed PRIOR to a game's launch." That's maniacal. Seriously, let's apply your logic to movies.

I go to the cinema to watch a movie and the seller asks me, "Did you pre-order a ticket to this movie?" I say, "No I didn't" and he replies, "Oh sorry. A few scenes wont be view-able to you because you didn't pre-order a ticket to the film. You don't deserve access to the full movie even though you're paying to watch it." See how stupid that sounds? Only with video games can companies get away with pulling such underhand BS and the fact that you think this is OK blows my mind.

Also, this whole "support" argument needs to go away. It doesn't make sense to me. This is a business transaction just like any other purchase, so it should be treated as such. You're buying a product because you want to play it, not because you care about supporting the company. When you buy toothpaste, are you doing it to support Colgate? No, you're buying it because you want it or need.

I also like how people's income seems to be an actual rebuttal. It's not. Also, what is this, "games aren't expensive" nonsense? Gaming is an expensive hobby, especially in Australia where I reside. PC games cost at least $70, console games cost $100, consoles themselves cost upwards of $400, you have to pay about $60 per year for online multiplayer on the consoles, so that adds up and on top of that, there's all this DLC nonsense.

All of this is besides the point though. The point is that when you go to the store and buy a game, you DESERVE the full game, not most of the game. Whether or not you purchase it day one doesn't matter. It didn't matter for decades and it on. Statues or physical items are good pre-order incentives, but story missions, no way.
