Microsoft Wants to Infuse its Xbox One Games With Technical Showcases of the Cloud and More

One of the most advertised features of the Xbox One is the use of Microsoft’s Azure cloud servers for several tasks that could empower the console past its physical hardware components, but the jury is still out on that since the games that make extensive use of that are still few.

Microsoft seems to intend to change the situation.

Well I fully expect that is Crackdown is successful and does everything MS said it would that their first party games would go the same route and expand on the tech.

This is what I want next gen should be. I want to see developers have the resources and the ability to do more with gameplay and AI. And the idea of this cloud compute seems to be what i'm asking for.

We'll see.

"I want to see developers have the resources and the ability to do more with gameplay and AI"

While I love Dragon Age the AI is pretty pathetic. Running in there and getting killed when your a Mage is, a headache and very frustrating.

I wanna see games like those improve AI. And improve it allot.

gangsta_red3389d ago

HA! At Dragon Age! man i feel your pain, so many times my Mage will run right up in front of an enemy's face and get instantly knocked upside the head. A definite pain in the butt.

Interesting, from my 6 (and counting) disagrees I guess there are some people here that do not want to see developers improve their gameplay and AI.

Go figure.

remixx1163389d ago

Don't you think crack down is a weird place to start...... Im not tryna diss crackdown, I loved the first one, its just that I figured halo or gears would be the first manlte MS would place this cloud thing on.

gangsta_red3389d ago

Crackdown makes sense. Halo and Gears has way too much riding on it to try something too different or out the box. I think MS wants to play it super safe with those two titles and only show off improved graphics for the next entry.

If cloud compute doesn't work or causes strange bugs, glitches or crashes during gameplay you will lose a huge chunk of your fanbase who purchased a Xbox One just for those games. Not to mention the "media" and the other fanboys will have a field day with it.

Crackdown on the other hand is an IP where you can take this chance. Part 1 was the only true hit and with this title more of a chance can be gambled on. This game is a better fit because it's a huge open world and has over the top gameplay action.

If it does work, you can definitely expect the rest of MS's 1st party games to follow.

remixx1163388d ago (Edited 3388d ago )

Yeah true true, in concept: experiment with a somewhat expendable IP, test the waters then bring it over to the big guns and hey who knows, if crackdown 3 sells well then it can be one of the big guns ie: halo, forza, gears, fable.

This could be incredible....... We just don't know what to expect.

Saigon3388d ago

If I am not mistaken, a while ago there was a report that CD will use the technology.

NuggetsOfGod3388d ago

Is this partially why they wanted xbox to be online only?

zero_gamer3388d ago

Perhaps. If the cloud is really the future, then by nature gaming will be online only. Out with the console, in with the streaming set-top box.

halfblackcanadian3388d ago

For all the crying that MS hasn't proven the cloud (I will hold reservations until I see it, but cloud processing is a thing, just waiting to see useful game application) the undisputable fact is that the tech could have been used a lot earlier had every console sold meant every console online.

Raiden3388d ago

Firstly congrats to MS for continued focus on pushing the boundaries of technology, cloud computing has been around for sometime now, but has never been used too a large scale before, games using this tech can't be rushed as it would fail the first out the door, (I believe most of us want this to work apart from SONYFB's) as it not only helps the XBOX but also helps PC owners too who may have a lower tech system, if all of this works great, with D12 more suited for the PC and some Features working on the XBOX I don't see the problem. What people seem to think is the more power is better and you would be wrong think in that way, it's knowing when to use it, Software is created to push hardware not the other way round. Having more power is not wrong either but if you don't understand it or how to use without maxing it, everything will look the same. Cloud computing is all about reduction of hardware usage only the future can tell. Good luck MS on this I hope CRACKDOWN is a huge success for cloud gaming. But you need more servers 3 hundred thousand is not enough double or triple that amount maybe.

THamm3388d ago

"Wants"and "Does" are 2 different things. they've been saying this stuff forever

Mr Logic3388d ago

I'm not willing to support or criticize this tech until I see it. My question is what happened if your internet goes out. Does the game just stop working or is it dumbed down?

gangsta_red3388d ago (Edited 3388d ago )

Probably the same thing that happens when any other game that is always online goes down. Game play stops, kicks you to the main menu, or it might keep you playing or maybe it will get dumbed down, who knows.

I think with so many always online games now to draw examples from, MS can handle a simple protocol on how the game should react if someone's connection stops. It shouldn't be anything to worry about.

@Ballseye...

Sure...I would sacrifice graphics for those attributes and features. I think more focus on those elements is what makes a game extremely fun.

BallsEye3388d ago (Edited 3388d ago )

With you. Less focus on graphics, more focus on immersion, AI, simulation.

@spicelicka

crackdown physics demo was already showing it.

Where is all this news coming from, I've read about 6 articles in the past few weeks about MS doing crazy stuff. I would really like to see some announcements and demos please.

KiwiViper853389d ago (Edited 3389d ago )

They have an event on the 21st. Might see something there...

Just had a thought, bit trolly but here goes... Imagine if Microsoft released a PS4 version of Crackdown3, just to prove cloud compute power exists, as the game may run terribly on PS4.

Bigpappy3389d ago

Then that will just be fuel for a conspiracy by M$ to have done the game poorly on PS4. That's too easy for fanboyz to debunk.

hello123389d ago (Edited 3389d ago )

What i don't get is people like you Microsoft has already said Crackdown will be first game to use the cloud for game physics. The game is been made its called development you can't rush this just look at any game and how long it takes to see it.

spicelicka3389d ago

What? I didn't say I don't believe it. All I said is I'd like to see a demo. And I wasn't just referring to the cloud, articles are talking about unannounced games, exciting peripherals and new technology. I'm curious to see that's all, calm your keyboard.

Jonny5isalive3388d ago

There was a demo and Im pretty sure its kinda old too. It shows a building in crackdown exploding into tiny pieces and the console only slows to a crawl while the console and the network is smooth and the building is in pieces.

pelida3389d ago

It comes from the lack of games

Barnaby-Jones3389d ago

Really excited to see what the new Crakdown and other games are like with this tech. Could bring some interesting experiences for gamers.

KiwiViper853389d ago

Theres no doubt that the cloud compute building destruction demo was an early build of crackdown3. It ran fine with the cloud support, and killed the pc without it.

ScorpiusX3389d ago (Edited 3389d ago )

Do it , you have my full support as a consumer .

@kiwiViper hell no that's the stupidest thing I have ever heard . Here a better one want to see or play games with such MS tech buy their console .

Bethesda Needs to Reduce the Gaps Between New Fallout and Elder Scrolls Releases

Waiting a decade for new instalments in franchises as massive as Fallout and Elder Scrolls feels like a waste.

Microsoft have Obsidian but I feel it's Bethesda who just don't want to play ball as they've always said they want to do it themselves.

Once MS bought Zenimax in 2020 they should have put the Outer Worlds 2 on the back burner, allow Bethesda to finish off its own Space RPG with Starfield (despite totally different tone why have two in your first party portfolio with two developers who's gameplay is a tad similar) and got Obsidian for one of their projects to make a spiritual successor to New Vegas.

When the Elder Scrolls VI is finished Bethesda can then onto the main numbered Fallout 5 themselves.

The Outer Worlds 2 started development in 2019 so putting it on the back burner wouldn't have been the end of the world, they'd have always come back to it once Fallout was done and it would have been nicely spaced out from Starfields release once they had most likely stopped supporting it and all the expansions were released.

If they did this back in 2020 when they bought Zenimax and the game had a good, steady 4 - 5 years development, you might have seen it release in 2025.

We are literally going to be waiting until 2030 at the very earliest for Fallout 5 and all they seem bothered about is pushing Fallout 76.

RaidenBlack3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Its not just only Todd not playing ball.
Obsidian have made a name for themselves in delivering stellar RPGs, but most famous once have always been sequels/spin-offs to borrowed IPs like KOTOR 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Stick of Truth etc.
Obsidian wants to invest more in their own original IPs like Outer Worlds or Pillars of Eternity with Avowed.
Similar to what Bluepoint & inXile wants to do or Kojima is doing (i.e not involving anymore in Konami's IPs).
So yea, even if New Vegas has the most votes from 3D Fallout fans, Obsidian just wants to do their own thing, like any aspiring dev studio and MS is likely currently respecting that.
But a future Fallout game from Obsidian will surely happen. Founder Feargus Urquhart has already stated an year ago that they're eager to make a new Fallout game with Bethesda, New Vegas 2 or otherwise. Urquhart was the director of the very first 1995's Fallout game after all.
And don't forget Brian Fargo and his studio inXile, as Brian Fargo was the director of Fallout's 1988 predecessor: Wasteland

Athenian Rhapsody is a JRPG with a difference: alongside turn-based combat & exploration, you'll need to complete WarioWare-style microgames.

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron - Coming Back for a New Generation

Originally launched in 2011, El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is coming to Nintendo Switch, so It's time to look back at the original.

jznrpg1h ago

Still have my ps3 copies. Bought it at launch and another one when I found it cheap and in perfect condition about 10 years ago. I wouldn’t buy it on Switch but if they made a PS5 version I would. I still have one of my PS3 Fats hooked up so good to go either way.

darthv721h ago

Id play it again on the switch. I wished my 360 version was bc but this is still a good way to play.
