Is The PS3 Already Obsolete?

The previous generation dragged on longer than most people wanted and now that the new consoles have been out for over a year, is the PS3 dead and gone?

"Already?" The console has been out since like 2006. Id say it led a nice long life.

I feel someone could still have tons of fun with a Ps3 if they never had one, just by playing the huge backlog. Of course if one is interested in all the newest games it might not be the best choice.

I think the Ps3 will continue to sell well in smaller countries, for at least a few more years.

DarkOcelet3393d ago

I still didnt buy it. With the huge backlog of exclusives, it will keep me occupied for a long time when i do get it.

TFJWM3392d ago

I guess you are finally almost finished with ps2 and the Xbox...

ABizzel13392d ago

20% Yes, and 80% No.

The PS4's immese success has pretty much overshadowed the PS3, and now PS3 exclusives are making their way over to the PS4 as well, so yes in that regard.

However, the PS3 is still getting exclusives and cross-gen games with the PS4, so it's still getting support, and PS+ alone can carry a PS3 users effortlessly, so absolutely not in the majority of cases.

I've personally moved fully into current-gen, but that doesn't stop my brother from loving the PS3 and 360 that I gave to him after my upgrade.

UltraNova3392d ago

With the huge ps3 back catalog I have to play I doubt it will be obsolete for me for the next 3 years...

JackBNimble3392d ago

If you go by "definition" then yes the ps3 is obsolete . But that is still my console of choice and I haven't jumped into the current gen as of yet.

guitarded773392d ago

Well, it depends on which perspective you're using. From ABizzel1's perspective, there is still a lot of software that's not obsolete, which is true. But the hardware is pretty much obsolete. Nothing wrong with that, just the way it is with hardware. But the games will live on for generations. I expect people to be downloading PS3 classics generations from now like we do with NES and Master System classics. How cool would it be to get 20 classic PS3 games on one uber capacity disc?

mikeslemonade3392d ago

After Uncharted 2 came out the PS3 became obsolete. And then brief periods like GTAV and TLoU the developers were able to muster great games out of crap hardware.

DarkOcelet3392d ago

No it's because i got a 360 last gen lol. But i dont want to miss out on the beautiful games of the PS3. But whatever you say bpro

InactiveUser3391d ago

It's not obsolete until you can play all of the games, or at least all of the good ones on a newer console.

If you can't play all of the Uncharted, Resistance, God of War, Ratchet & Clank, Killzone, Heavy Rain, Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBigPlanet 1 & 2, Motorstorm, Folklore, a Gran Turismo, etc. better somewhere else, then it's 'by definition' NOT obsolete, because it's still the best or only way to access those great games.

If PS4 were backwards compatible, then PS3 would be obsolete, because it would do everything (or the vast majority of things) the same or better while also getting the new games.

This is why the PS1 is fully obsolete (because the PS2 has backwards compatibility and the PS3 has enhanced backwards compatibility with widescreen and smoothing options). And why the PS2 pretty much is also (because most of the best games were remastered on PS3 and early PS3 models had enhanced backwards compatibility).

Space bar still not working?

ovnipc3392d ago

That console been obsolete since 2006 when it came out. Lol. I loved the ps2 but ps3 was trash.

MajorLazer3392d ago

My PS3 is still going very strong. I've had it for years and I will continue to use it even when I buy a PS4 and X1

paul-p19883391d ago

Same, I've got mine set-up right next to my PS4, just to finish my backlog of games before I fully retire it. Currently finishing Yakuza 4 and Yakuza: Dead Souls before Yakuza 5 releases in Europe but I've still got quite a few other games I only 50% completed....

sanosukegtr1233391d ago

I have a ps3 & there's still loads of people playing on the ps3, games like dead island, black ops & 2, ghost, advance warfare, naruto etc. So no the ps3 still got some juice left in it.

Master of Unlocking3391d ago

Not just in smaller countries though. Plenty of people still view the PS3 as the better console compard to the PS4, due to its huge backlog, free online, better performance as a multimedia device, cheaper pricetag and more (yes, Home is also part of the reason).
I know I for one won't be playing on the PS4 anytime soon anyway.

That said, I'd like to have a list of the upcoming exclusives coming on for the PS3 in 2015, because for the first time since its release 2014 wasn't all that in this regard.

BattleAxe3393d ago

Me too, as it sits right beside my Xbox One, and still gets 50% of my gaming time between the two consoles.

rainslacker3392d ago

More games are releasing for it last year and this year than are being released for next gen consoles in the same years. Plenty of PS3 content still on my pre-order list, but I suppose it depends on what kind of games you like to play.

Otherwise, the system is still selling and has a huge install base, and still has games being made for it, so no, it's not obsolete.

Double_O_Revan3392d ago

I played it yesterday, and will be playing it again today. I'm in the middle of one game now, and have 2 games I've yet to start. And that's just of what I own. That's also not counting replays. Uncharted 2 has been screaming "Replay me!" For a while now.

sanosukegtr1233391d ago

i still got tons of games to finish.

lodossrage3393d ago

The PS3 will be relevant for a long time. Hell, even the Vita will have a fairly long life.

The reason I say that is because of PS Now. The games that go on PS Now use the same servers the actual PS3/PS4/PS Vita games do.

That in itself tells you that if they want PS Now to truly progress, they need their systems that are already out to assist in gamer population of games for a long time.

Pathosverdes33392d ago

No sorry the psnow games don't run on the same servers that games use for online features. Sony is building custom rack servers with multiple simplified ps3 hardware in them and those run the game instances for the players. See http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

lodossrage3392d ago (Edited 3392d ago )

Then why is it I just rented KZ3 on the service to get extra trophies yet I was able to play with my friend that has the physical version of the game?

How am I able to even play with him if they don't use the same game servers?

Tempest3173392d ago

@lodossrage you're interpreting incorrectly...the psnow servers that process the game for you to stream are not the same as the servers to play online. The game is being processed by psnow servers, but when you play it, the servers it uses for multiplayer and trophies etc are the ps plus servers

lodossrage3392d ago (Edited 3392d ago )

@Tempest317-

But that's what I meant when I said game servers. I was reffering to the online servers for the games being shared. I guess I could have explained it better.

I've been "trophy hunting" killzone 3 with a friend that has the disc version for a few days thanks to PS Now.

But your explaination does clarify stuff so thanks for that

I think it has everything that's required to survive in today's gaming climate.

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

CrimsonWing694h ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker3h ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing693h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos26m ago(Edited 23m ago)

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos9h ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto8h ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger888h ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).
