The Worst Games of 2014

From Basement Crawl to DriveClub, there were a lot of disappointments this year.

Flawed.

UltimaEnder3414d ago

WOW really? One of the worst games of the year? That's like saying Titanfall should be on there just because there is no single-player, or Alien: Isolation because it's repetitive... I agree they are not perfect but so far from making a "worst of" list...

OmegaShen3414d ago

No, there is far more games that take worst game of the year.

Destiny isn't close, because theres games that are unplayable or just flat out bad.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3413d ago (Edited 3413d ago )

@Stiffler

My mistake. My point was that DriveClub does not deserve to be called "A worst game" in any category when there are games that are far worse, like Ryse. Even if you confine the list to games from 2014 there are still worse games like Spiderman 2 that didn't even make the list. You're right when you say the fanboyism on this site is horrible and it begins with people who write articles like this.

EvilWay3413d ago

Titanfall and Destiny should both be on there because they didn't live up to the massive hype they had, but Alien Isolation is my GOTY so I disagree with you on that

ChronoJoe3413d ago

Not sure the author of the article even plays Driveclub, because his comments aren't true.

"it’s just hard to accept that, even after all these months of release, none of it works"

This isn't true, everything seems to be working now, clubs, challenges and faceoffs are all functional. Not sure if there's something that doesn't work, that I haven't noticed, but it seems fine to me?

I have doubts that the author has played the game recently.

Sidology3413d ago

Titanfall should also be on there.

nX3413d ago

lol Driveclub is one of the best games this year, Watch Dogs and AC:Unity belong on top of this list.

Kornholic3413d ago (Edited 3413d ago )

@EvilWay

I had a ton of fun with Titanfall - the actual gameplay is just so smooth and fluid!

Sure it has its shortcomings, but if you have the audacity to call Titanfall a bad game, you really have no grasp on reality.

AndrewLB3412d ago

ChronoJoe- You seem to be forgetting the fact that not only was DriveClub an incredibly hyped game not only by all the Sony crowd and gaming "journalists", but the game absolutely BOMBED with only 375k worldwide sales by the end of the second week. Combine that with the completely broken online portion of the game which last i checked was the most important part.

badz1493414d ago

Driveclub? Why? Because of the online issues at launch? Why not Halo MCC? double standard much? Or just a troll? I'm gonna go with the later.

joab7773414d ago

Driveclub may deserve to be on a top 10 worst launches list, but worst games? Not even close.

u4one3414d ago

its a mediocre game with a poor launch. halo mcc had a crap launch too but its history as a big ip saves it.

badz1493414d ago (Edited 3414d ago )

@u4one

mediocre game? based on what? haters opinion on the internet? I doubt you have even played it. you constantly hate on it every chance you got and you expect people to believe your opinion on it?

"the cars just behave too unrealistically to me. the acceleration is way too fast, the tires are entirely too sticky, and the braking is unrealistically fast. They say this straddles arcade and sim but to me it leans way more into arcades yard."

"Fh2 is still a gorgeous game. To be honest I don't think dc really looks much better and I have both games. Some stuff in dc looks amazing but sometimes it's inconsistent. I think the rain looks a little better in dc but fh2 still looks amazing to me and its exponentially more engaging as a game"

those comments are proof enough you don't own DC let alone play it. and "rain looks a LITTLE better"

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

LOL "little"...sure. go have your eyes checked!

UltimaEnder3414d ago

I agree on DriveClub, not sure it deserves to be on the list and there were many worse games on the PS4 this year; maybe because it was so overhyped and failed to live up?

u4one3414d ago

HAHAH you don't know... I have the game. I also have Forza 5 and FH2. I could go into a long list of why I think DC is weak in comparison but I think the internet says enough about the subject already. DC has some great graphics but the gameplay is boring, theres no tuning, no customizing, the car system is weak, the car roster is weak. the physics are not good and the AI is not good... these are all my opinion but I play a lot of racers as they are my favorite genre. Heres a photo I took just for you... I have the game. I play the game... its just ok. I can say that because I have others that are just simply better. The fanboys just can't stand the x1 has better racers.. sorry.

Heres a picture as proof though. I took it just for you, homey:
https://dl.dropboxuserconte...

haters gonna hate.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3414d ago (Edited 3414d ago )

@u4one

Driveclub is better than Thief. It's better than Ryse. It's better than Killer Instinct. It's better than Murdered Soul Suspect, and Amazing Spiderman 2. When people make lists like this criticizing games like Destiny and DriveClub while leaving out games like Ryse and Amazing Spiderman 2, it just tells me one of two things;

1- The person who wrote this doesn't play video games at all or

2- The author is biased fanboy with an agenda

Stiffler3414d ago

@igivehugs2nakednothing

Why would Ryse be on this list when its a 2013 LAUNCH title? Incase you didn't read the big title: "The worst games of 2014" <--- There, I pointed it out for you bro.

N4G is just swimming with intelligent comments and even better articles at the moment

Bobby Kotex3414d ago

@Stiffler the fanboyism on this site is ridiculous, but so are the articles that get sent to the front page. And yes I own an xbox one and ps4.

MysticStrummer3413d ago (Edited 3413d ago )

@u4one - "its a mediocre game with a poor launch. halo mcc had a crap launch too but its history as a big ip saves it."

What ridiculous logic. It's ok if a game has problems as long as it's an established IP. That's essentially what you said there.

smh

Driveclub is a very good arcade racing game with incredible graphics, and after the weather update it looks even better. The game will continue to sell, especially when they finally get the free PS+ version in the store.

From the article…

"DriveClub isn’t a horrible game"

Then it doesn't belong on a list of worst games unless this was one great year in gaming, which we all know it wasn't. When multiple last gen remasters are talked about as legitimate GotY candidates, it was a slow year. Any fool can easily name worse games than Driveclub.

"it’s just hard to accept that, even after all these months of release, none of it works"

This is either a complete lie or the writer is so misinformed he/she shouldn't feel qualified to write about games.

Lulz_Boat3413d ago (Edited 3413d ago )

The article is written by a stupid xfag... "even after all these months of release, none of it works"

Totally FALSE.

The game now is FULLY operational. we are still waiting PS Plus version tough.

Mechanism3413d ago

This article pretty much sums up why MS fans and their shitty bloggers are the worst in video games.. The most petty, shallow and bias fans out there.

I'm no saint but i'm not some idiotic blogger, or buffoon with a patriotic bias towards their US product who says things like "even after all these months of release, none of it works"..

Same as the US media generally, just plain dirty.

imt5583413d ago

No AC : Unity on the list? No Halo : MCC on the list) Damn, this game ( or games Halo 1,2,3,4 ) is synonymous for online MP and game ( games ) is still broken. DAMN!

Knushwood Butt3413d ago

I was playing on the new Elements events just last night.

Awesome.

Spid3r63413d ago

Halo had only Matchmaking issues not online issues like Driveclub, plus Halo MCC has 4 full games of Single and multiplayer content. BTW you are still able to get online about as long as Destiny takes to play a match...Driveclub you literally had to wait for someone to relinquish a spot.

3413d ago
TheDCD3413d ago

Halo: The MCC was built with equal single player and multiplayer components. If you couldn't get into an online match, you could at least play through the remastered four campaigns.

DriveClub was built on the principle of an online social driving experience. It had single player components but was built with racing alongside friends. And when the online doesn't work for a game that thrives for online features, that's a problem. A BIG one.

BlackTar1873413d ago

@TheDCD

That is the most hogwash and cherry picking bias i've ever read. GG

hades073413d ago

I agree with people above, bad launch but still a great racing game. Since I dont have a PS4 I played the game (single player) at a buddies and the way progression takes place in single player was great. If you have a game that is single player only would the be one of the worse games? No. While it is disappointing what happened with the multiplayer the SP part was amazing. May have to call him up and go see what the new weather effects look like over the weekend haha.

deviliscry3413d ago

what do u spect when fanboys or ignorant ppl that never have play the game an believe wat other pp say, have a tittle brain to makea post ,article

vega2753413d ago (Edited 3413d ago )

Did people ever think that the the reason why Driveclub is on that list instead of Halo MCC. Is because with all the delays Driveclub had they still had problems with the game. I mean no excuse for halo with the matchmaking issues. But a year delay and still had a crap launch. The only reason why people are hyping it up is because of the weather DLC. But the game still isnt working for some, let alone there's still no word on the psn+ release as it was promised and still not released.

Again not defending halo MCC. But maybe it should have been delayed to get the bugs sorted first. But I pretty sure it wouldn't have taken a year to do so.

BlackTar1873413d ago

@Vega

What you described doesn't justify calling it the worst game of 2014 or one of them.

Metacritic scores for the games on this list:

72 The Last Tinker: City of Colors
71 Driveclub
69 Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII
59 NBA Live 15
54 Escape Dead Island
49 Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark
37 Fluster Cluck
34 Rambo: The Video Game
32 Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyrics
27 Basement Crawl

Here is just a small sampling of other games reviewed this year that have lower Metacritic scores than a lot of the games on that list:

51 Sacred 3
51 Murdered: Soul Suspect
49 The Legend of Korra
48 Daylight
46 The Amazing Spider-Man 2
43 Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z
38 Putty Squad
32 Magus

Driveclub and Lightning Returns especially stick out like a sore thumb on this list, as high-budget games that have a real fanbase and received many positive reviews. There were many MUCH WORSE games that could have been chosen in their stead, and I only named ones that are fairly well-known. But then I suppose nobody would give a damn about a list of the worst games that is full of games nobody ever wanted to try (or even heard of in many cases), so you have to put high-profile games that truly don't belong on such a list just to be controversial. It's all about clickbait. In other words: a totally merit-less article.

XanderZane3413d ago

List is pretty spot on. Rambo, NBA Live 15, DriveClub, Conic Boom, FF XIII: Lightning Returns, Transformers, Escape Dead Island were all crappy games. People complaining about DriveClub being on the list obviously forgot the game was delayed a whole year because it was broken and Evolotion continue to taunt the game as a Horizon killer and the best racing game ever created. Then it got release, without weather effects, without online working properly, with poor A.I. and several features not working. The developers took 2 months to get the game up to par, which is ridiculous. Sure Halo: MCC had issues with matchmaking and some bugs in the single player games, but it didn't take 2 months to fix and the game wasn't delayed for a year because of it either. Even with all the fixes on Driveclub it's still a subpar racing game compared to Horizon 2's open world experience and features. It just doesn't compare in terms of gameplay, features and content. We still don't know if or when we'll see the PS+ version of DriveClub.

Spotie3413d ago

Full of shit.

Game was not broken. Ever.

Evo continues to do what? You mean that one ad where they quote what someone else says, like so many other companies do? And who called it the best racing game ever? Stop making stuff up.

The weather was never gonna be there at launch. Never. How the hell is that a strike against the game? That's like complaining about a WoW expansion pack that comes out years after launch.

The AI was not poor, and is not poor. But then, you'd have to have played the game to know this. Just because there are a lot of fools out there looking for the instant gratification of easy wins who found themselves getting their asses handed to them doesn't mean the AI was bad.

Define par. Explain what is considered par that it took two months for Evolution to reach.

MCC, according to some users, still isn't working correctly all the time(by the way, it hasn't been out two months yet, so you can't really make that claim)

Please please PLEASE explain this superior gameplay bullshit you Xbox fanboys KEEP going on about. I played FH2, slid around the damn roads, wondering where the sim part of the line-straddling racer was supposed to be, and found myself disappointed.

Exactly what features does FH2 have over DC? What content? You bitch about there not being enough cars, but DC isn't about massive lists of cars. Otherwise I can just say "Gran Turismo" and forever shut your strap about every Forza ever. You whine about there being no customization... but that's not necessary for a great racer, nor was it ever intended for DriveClub, so why the hell even bring it up? May as well run your mouth about there being no flying sections, as much sense as you're making.

I seriously don't get it. There's a whole contingent of Xbox fanboys on this site that make their way into every DriveClub article having never played the game, and all they do is complain about stuff that was never meant to be there like that's all that matters.

I'm STILL waiting on day/night transitions and weather in Forza proper.

Oh, I forgot. It doesn't matter if Forza is missing content compared even to its last outing, let alone to its most direct competitor. All that counts is the few things that Forza may have over the competition.

Now to wait for the Trolling, Personal Attack, Bad Language, or Immature bubble down I know is coming, while this clown gets nothing.

Sony fansite, my ass.

XanderZane3412d ago

@Spotie
No one is full of shit here Mr fanboy. Evolution showed many videos with the weather in the game taunting it as a big feature, yet when the game was released, there wasn't any weather. Horizon 2 launched with the day/night cycle and weather. I have played the game several times, and it doesn't compare to Horizon 2. You said you play Horizon 2, so you should already know all the differences. Everything from upgrading every car in the shop with new parts, racing against your friends Drivatar instantly, racing online against other gamers in an open world environment, completely goals, finding new cars in barns, racing in the story mode with hundreds of different cars on offroad and street tracks and having your Drivatar race for you while you're not playing to win Credits is in here. There are just a lot more things to do in Horizon 2, then in DriveClub and you're not confined to a 2-3 lane road. Every car in Horizon 2 feels and drives differently and weather effects actually makes a difference. It's not just for show. You just seem like a very angry fanboy who's upset because one of their games didn't live up to everyones expectation. I had DriveClub preordered. but cancelled after they refused to release the PS+ version. Then all the issues started happening and I cancelled my preorder. Game obviously wasn't worth $60. Stay mad though if that's what you choose.

showtimefolks3413d ago

Destiny #1 no matter what anyone says, buy destiny in fall of 2015 and it will come with all the DLC. Meaning we will get the game originally planned. And yes i know millions bought it and millions play daily, it still doesn't change the fact its an average game. Here is what was promised: Mass effect, borderlands and Halo. Instead we got Halo and not in a very good way. Bungie went one of the top developers to tier 2 level

Lords of Fallen #2 yes its a very good game but the potential was so much more

Watch dogs #3, well this is UBI
AC Unity #3.5 well this is UBI
The crew #3.75 well this is UBI

Farcry 4 #4 now hear me out, its a very good game but UBI just pretty much made it the same as FC3, they knew what worked so they barely took any risks.

Halo MCC seriously MS, its your biggest IP and you screw it up. this was suppose to be fan service

now you may disagree this is my personal list

best games of the year

Sunset overdrive
Forza horizon
Drive club
Dragon age

kurruptor3413d ago

Wait a year to buy a game cheaper?! Genius! Why would you buy it at all if it is the worst game of the year?

Idiot.

showtimefolks3412d ago

kurruptor

where did i say cheaper? when have GOTY been anything less than regular prices of a brand new game($59.99 plus tax)

and waiting has nothing to do with cheaper or anything, bottom line is destiny is a game which will have a lot more content in a year than it does now.

people buy GOTY editions all the time even after buying the regular version.

3413d ago
Drabent3413d ago

LOL u beat me too it! Yes Destiny of Duty should be on this list....freakin defiance 2 boring azz game.

FanboyKilla3413d ago

@bloodborn dc one of the best games of the year? you get comedian of the year for that one. i cant stop smiling, thanks man. maybe dc is one the best ps4 games, but if i was sony fan i wouldnt brag about that.

abstractel3413d ago (Edited 3413d ago )

I'm a video-game fan, not a "insert company X here" fan and I thouroughly enjoyed PS4 titles Driveclub (still enjoying it), Infamous SS, Killzone Shadowfall, Infamous First Light. As for non exclusives there's been some great ones this year too. I enjoyed Watch Dogs and the short but sweet Metal Gear Ground Zeroes, currently enjoying AC Unity, DA Inquisition and FC4.

I probably would have enjoyed Sunset Overdrive from the Twitch footage I've seen but one exclusive game is not enough for me to want to buy an XB1. Ryse almost got me to buy one at launch, but when I watched the playthrough on Youtube I was surprised at how one-dimensional it was -- way more so than most in that genre (which I love).

How about we celebrate the games we enjoy instead of shitting on games we disliked? And how about we also recognize that we are all individuals who enjoy different games?

Halo2ODST23413d ago

wow, over 50% agree that Destiny should be on this list. That's saying something. This was Bungie's first ever major fk up, hopefully Destiny 2 won't be like this

abstractel3413d ago

F Off, Driveclub was tonnes of fun and got at least 25 hours out of me. And they've kept delivering with the DLC which has been fun. Despise lists like these, they only exist to shit on developers (ie, people).

UltimaEnder3414d ago

I would agree with all of these; would also probably add Murder: Soul Suspect and a couple others to this list...

TheDCD3414d ago

Murdered: Soul Suspect just missed the cut. That was disappointing tho.

KiwiViper853414d ago

I loved Murdered: Soul Suspect.

I found it a really interesting take on murder mysteries and ghost stoies, being told from the other side. I 1000G'd it.

MadLad3413d ago

It was a great story with interesting characters, but it missed the mark when it came to gameplay. Hell, it even shoehorned in a stealth segment that, in all seriousness, may just be the worst I've experienced.
I still enjoyed myself overall though.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3414d ago

This clown has DriveClub on the list but not Thief? Moron alert...

-Foxtrot3414d ago

Yeah...Thief had something to live up to aswell

TheDCD3413d ago

That one just barely missed the top (bottom?) 10. Some real harsh cuts here.

showtimefolks3413d ago

considering the fact Drive club is working for 98% of people and is an amazing game to play with friends.

no doubt thief was just a major MEH

typittt693414d ago

Driveclub doesn't belong there. Not perfect but far from one of the worst...

BitbyDeath3414d ago

These articles always have one title added to the list to drive hits and get people talking. The same title is often always used as the image for the piece.

Not even worth commenting.

CuddlyREDRUM3413d ago

The user reviews/ratings on Amazon, Gamefly and other sources say it was a bad game.

kayoss3413d ago

You are reading "user Reviews". User Review are subjective at best. You have trolls who are fanboys of one console will bash the competitor game eventhough they've never played it.

Angeljuice3413d ago (Edited 3413d ago )

DriveClub is one of the top 3 games I've played this year on any system. It is really addictive and way more fun than the reviews would have you believe.

Its the best driving game I've played in years (including both X1 Forza games)

60FPS on PS5: Unofficial PS5 'FPS Boost' mods are radically improving PS4 back compat

Digital Foundry : Whether it's via FPS Boost or bespoke software upgrades, backwards compatibility on the current-gen consoles delivered an unexpected delight - the ability to liberate older console games from their 30fps limits, running them at 60 frames per second or even higher. FPS Boost did the business for Xbox Series consoles on an impressive range of titles, but there was always the sense that PS5 could do more. It's a hunch that checks out as a range of frame-rate unlocks are available for PS5, covering many must-have games - the major caveat being that only exploitable consoles running on older firmwares are invited to the party.

eurogamer.net
darthv72102d ago

you love to see new life being breathed into older titles but damn the process to get there. It should be automatic that these work for everyone... not just those who exploit their systems. Really wish Sony and MS would keep this program going officially.

Psychonaut85102d ago

Damn this sucks. I want this shit so bad, but I’m not jailbreaking my console. And frankly I shouldn’t have to. I’m not a tech person, but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate? Or would that have to be a large patch?

dveio102d ago (Edited 102d ago )

"but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate?"

I guess it's not.

But it has become a profitable business if you do so.

So no one would pay for only the framerate patched to being unlocked. So studios need to offer more than that.

But this would take more time, polishing and would cost more money. So they shy away, but won't unlock the framerate, either.

That's just my personal assumption. But from what I can comprehend technically, it shouldn't be difficult to unlock framerates via a patch for older games.

... if it hadn't became a business.

RaidenBlack102d ago (Edited 102d ago )

frame-rate unlock should be free ...
We've seen many devs offer free patches and updates to pretty old PC titles, even bonuses ... so why can't devs offer the frame unlock patch for free (in consultation with the platform-producers) for a title from just a generation earlier?

Einhander1972102d ago

RaidenBlack

"frame-rate unlock should be free ..."

Obviously the result of that thinking is that developers aren't even going to do it.

If they had been allowed to charge $5-10 you would see incentivized developers doing it way more often.

People just always want everything for free, but it's not free to make the patch, people have to code it then other people have to test it, and there will always be other costs involved.

If people want dollar store gaming then expect to get what you pay for.

shinoff2183101d ago (Edited 101d ago )

Raiden I might be wrong but last I thought it cost money to put patches out on consoles.

As far as me paying for it, I'm not all that interested tbh. Not enough to pay for it with older games, and newer games have been pretty decent about it for the most part.

dumahim102d ago

Sounds like the modder has to go in to make changes to unlock it on a game by game basis. "Simple" enough to do it unofficially, but to have it done officially, they need someone to go in a make that change, put out a patch and put it through certification, which I believe is not necessarily a cheap thing to do. It's questionable if going through this would then give them enough sales to make it worthwhile.

Inverno101d ago

Many games still have physics tied to framerate, i think it's cause they wouldn't want to go in and do anything extra. Then there's the 10 dollar upgrades they rather charge. The problem is that there's no compromise, cause if I could mod my PS4 and all I'd lose is online play then id jailbreak it immediately. Mods have done so much for PC games and they could do the same for consoles, but manufacturers hafto be willing to compromise.

shinoff2183101d ago

It's not to hard to do and there's youtube videos that break it down really well. ANyway most of us here arent able to break are console anyway due to being up to date on firmware from playing

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 101d ago
Chocoburger102d ago

Yep, this sucks having to require a jailbreak for something that should be standard in our industry by now. I learned my lesson when PS4 was jailbroken and I didn't keep a console on low firmware for years, but now I'm holding onto two low firmware PS5s specifically because there are features I'll be able to do that you can't do on official firmware, so this will pay off for me soon enough.

Jin_Sakai102d ago

It should be a sin to let these games sit and be stuck at 30fps.

The Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy Deserves a Remaster

Final Fantasy 13 was first introduced to us back in 2009, almost four years after Final Fantasy 12 was released, and fans had been eagerly anticipating the next installment. But when it finally arrived, there were mixed reactions, including complaints about its linearity, the lack of towns and NPCs, and the limited control over the characters. At the time, Square Enix kept its game production behind closed doors and didn't take in a lot of feedback — especially from Western fans.

The game has been revisited by many different Final Fantasy fans since then, and some, like myself, have come to love it again. Almost all staple entries in the series have found their way to modern consoles, so it's about time that the FF13 trilogy gets a remaster

I've been thinking about this. I agree. While I really disliked it at first I never played it again. After hating ff15 so damn much I just think it can't be worse then 15 and if I'm not mistaken atleast it's turn based. I need more of that in my life.

nitus10327d ago

I actually finished FFXIII and on the second playthrough found I actually liked the game.

Actually I have liked most of the FF games (I have not played FFIX unfortunately) and I do agree with you with regards to FFXV. Graphically IMHO FFXV is excelent but for some reason I just could not get enthusiastic in playing it.

As for "turn-based", I prefer active and real time although to be fair "turn-based" is a real plus especially when confronting a difficult protagonist. I found this to be especially the case when playing FFXXII where you could switch rapidly between "turn" and "active" although having a resonable knowledge of simple Boolean Algebra is IMHO essential when playing this game.

327d ago
Levii_92327d ago

Ridiculous comment, first of all i think you should replay 15, second of all that game is 10 times better than the XIII games especially the royal edition. And third .. turn based combat is a dying (almost dead) style of gameplay and i personally wont miss it at all so don’t act like that is some sort of big plus because XIII has it.. it is not.

jambola327d ago

Somebody needs to learn about subjective taste

shinoff2183327d ago

Ff15

Sucked imo. I don't need to give it another try. Last time was the 3rd time and I had 34 hours into it. It just wasn't good imo

Chriswynnetbh327d ago

How is turn based dying or almost dead? Pokémon is one of the biggest RPGs in the world and is and has always been turn based. To some it is a plus especially when it comes to FF since the first 10 of them all are and are arguably better games than any FF to come after

XV was rubbish, but understandable given the development hell. That overworld for me is the biggest example, so strangely designed and empty. And parts of the story awkwardly cut for DLC, most egregious being that prompto part where he's like "I'm a clone", or whatever he was (it was that forgettable), and the other guys basically shrugging it off.

Tapani327d ago (Edited 327d ago )

Turn-based is alive and well: Pokemon, Dragon Quest, XCom, Civilization, Homeworld, Age of Wonders, Total War, Original Sin, Baldur's Gate, Warhammer, Yu-Gi-Oh, Company of Heroes, Wasteland, Pathfinder, Disco Elysium, Octopath Traveler, Chained Echoes and many, many more great games, both new and old, franchises and new IPs are selling well, reviewing well and sequels are coming.

If you don't play the game, maybe the turn-based has just died in/for you, but certainly the genre has never been so alive as in 2023! Plus, when you look at Final Fantasy franchise, it started going down in quality when it left turn-based combat behind. FFXVI may redeem some of the glory (and FFXIV was great), but the turn-based games were higher rated and deeper in terms of gameplay and had more interesting things to do in the world.

DarXyde327d ago

I'd say Persona 5 is one of the best of the best games in a couple of decades.

I don't think you manage that with a dying gameplay format.

shinoff2183326d ago (Edited 326d ago )

Levii92

Turn based is way funner imo then just some hack n slash rpg. I like both but prefer turn based.

Far as dying I doubt it. It's also kinda funny cause the best final fantasy have been turn based. Ff still to this day can't top ff6 through ff9. Interesting.

Far as someone who brought up persona 5. I dislike the art style so I've yet to play it but I'd throw dq11 in there. Best jrpg I've played in fkin years. Over a decade.

Last I was a bit iffy on chained echoes because of the sp and no traditional leveling system. I recently bought it. Looks gorgeous, story is fantastic so far, but I cannot for the life of me get over how much I truly hate the leveling system. It's just flat out whack to me. I'm still going to finish it cause unlike ff15 atleast chained echoes doesn't feel like a chore

goldwyncq326d ago

The XIII series (especially Lightning Returns) has far better combat than XV, and you don't need to watch an anime and a movie to make sense of the story.

FinalFantasyFanatic326d ago (Edited 326d ago )

15 was only fun for derping about in the wilderness, at least FF13 had a better story and was more coherent overall (plot, characters, gameplay, world, ect...).

15 was just beautify garbage, so much wasted potential, the Duke Nukem Forever of the FF franchise.

I really loved Persona 5, can't wait for P6 to be announced, I'd love ports of the first few games (we already have P3P/P4G/P5R available on almost everything now).

People act like XV killed one of their family members. It wasn't the best FF ever, but it certainly wasn't a bad game. You "hated it so damn much"? Chill.

FinalFantasyFanatic326d ago

I agree, FF13 is better than FF15, but I don't think I can play through that trilogy again, I'd rather play one of the older games.

Not really

Let them move on and focus on good FF games

Hofstaderman327d ago (Edited 327d ago )

Thank you. A ton of FFXIII articles recently. Most of the people who like this game are not old enough to have played 4 to 9. Even 10 and 12 are vastly superior to this game. That being said a remaster would then make all the FF titles available on the PS platform.

jambola327d ago

Do you have some kind of official survey of ff 13 fans ages?
Would love a link
Also, all games are available on multiple systems, re released many times
"Not old enough" doesn't even make much sense

shinoff2183327d ago (Edited 327d ago )

That was part of what I was trying to say. I've gave 15 3 try ff13 deserves atleast a second. And like I said I could use some turn based in my life

I've also played through or played all of the ff games starting with ff1 way way way back.

goldwyncq326d ago

"Good" is subjective. I love FFIX but I know many fans who don't like it for the art style and the slow combat.

I_am_Batman327d ago (Edited 327d ago )

Recently replayed them and I agree a remaster would be great. The complaints about linearity are fair, but they only really apply to the first half of the first game and while I agree that it would've been nice to have proper towns, minigames and subquests, it didn't detract from the intriguing story, interesting characters, tactical gameplay and amazing soundtrack in my opinion.

XIII-2 fixes a lot of the issues of XIII and expands on the story in interesting ways. The combat and progression builds on top of the systems of XIII and the nonlinearity and discoverability of secrets is a big inprovement over the original game. It's easily the best game of the trilogy.

Lightning Returns was probably a bit too experimental for it's own good. It tried to reinvent the wheel for no reason. The solo party for most of the game and the outfit based combat felt like a downgrade over XIII-2 combat system. It does have a unique vibe, but the plot kinda goes off the rails and many of the story beats didn't land as much for me as they did in the first two games. The race against time aspect was an interesting idea, but it never felt like it mattered, because it wasn't much of a challenge to manage the remaining time even while doing all the subquests.

Eonjay327d ago

XIII-2 is one of the greatest games ever.

Snookies12327d ago (Edited 327d ago )

XIII-2 is by far the best of the trilogy. Went out of my way to get the Platinum trophy on it. Which is actually a fun one to go for. Didn't take too long, only about 70-80 hours to accomplish. Loved every second of it though.

Youngindy21327d ago

I don't think linearity is a fair critique, when every FF up until that point was fairly linear esp. in the first half of the game. People herald FF VII(including the remake), but it is just as linear as FFXIII was. The linearity complaints came at a time when open-world games were just starting to become a thing and people thought every game should be open-world, but now that every game is, people now want more linear experiences. Go Figure.

shinoff2183327d ago

Ff10 was pretty linear to. Haven't played through all of 13 but 10 was linear as fk until the end

I_am_Batman327d ago

Totally agree. I never fully understood why 10 was so universally praised when it had many of the same design philosophies xiii is criticized for.

CDbiggen327d ago (Edited 327d ago )

I felt the same for the most part except the LR combat system. I thought it was an upgrade on the party of three system the previous two games had as now you had more control over your moves with different sets being an L1/R1 click away, and could move the single character around in battle and attack limbs or tails of certain enemies, or reduce the distance between you and an enemy you're after saving ATB.

I_am_Batman327d ago

LR combat certainly has it's merits. I would've preferred it if it wasn't tied to the costumes which can make Lightning look quite ridiculous and out of place sometimes though.

But mainly I would've preferred to see an evolution of XIII-2 systems. Since they are so different it's obviously just a preference. Can't really compare them objectively.

CDbiggen327d ago

Yeah I get ya, and I can totally see why the costume part got to people. I'm someone that doesn't care what the character looks like as long as I'm happy with the stats (looking at Xenoblade). LR to me is just one of those odd games that I can't help respect for mixing things up, even if the outcome wasn't the best lol. But yeah too different to compare.

sadraiden326d ago

Why would a remaster be great? They exist in HD, on a console that is still compatible with modern televisions, and you just replayed it.

I_am_Batman326d ago

I replayed them on my PS3. I just think it would make sense for those games to be more accessible to Playstation gamers, which is where the majority of the modern FF fanbase is (due to the exclusivity deals of VII Re and XVI).

Why The Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy Has Some of The Best Music In The Series

As we celebrate Final Fantasy’s 35th anniversary, let’s look back at the underrated soundtracks of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy.

game-grooves.com
goldwyncq484d ago

It really does. Caius’ theme is still one of the best villain themes ever.

SeTTriP484d ago

Barthandelus is a great boss theme to.

Snookies12484d ago

Come on... Even haters of Final Fantasy XIII have to admit the soundtrack really was great. There are some parts of the OST that stand out among even Nobuo's work.

CrimsonWing69484d ago

The battle themes are pretty amazing, man.

gold_drake484d ago

sat what you want about the games, but the soundtrack has always been good.

MehmetAlperTR484d ago

Agreed... Legendary Nobuo Uematsu was not involved with FF13.. So that has got terrible musics.

jambola484d ago

so any game without no Uematsu has terrible music?

MehmetAlperTR483d ago (Edited 483d ago )

@Jambola nope... But in PS1 era we played FF7-8-9 and in a PS2 era FF10... They were all involved with Uematsu San. We grove up with him and his musics.. SO FF means, him and his music to us.

-Foxtrot485d ago

It's alright but I mean with so many other FF games it's not even in the top 10 for me

You just can't beat IX, VII, X and my personal favourite VIII when it comes to music

Even the theme song sucks, instead of just having an English version of the Japanese theme they got X Factors Leona Lewis to do the song which didn't sound like FF theme song.

FinalFantasyFanatic484d ago

Yeah, that ending song was terrible, I'll never be able to fathom why that was chosen, it feels so out of place with that game.

RedDevils484d ago

Lol is was my wtf moment.

SoulWarrior485d ago

I agree, regardless of the general consensus of the game itself, FF rarely lets down when it comes to the music at least.

porkChop485d ago

Nah. VIII has the best music in the series. IX is a close second.

Hofstaderman484d ago

Yes; eyes one me, man with the machine gun, waltz to the moon, the oath, maybe I’m a lion…FF8 has the best music in the series by far. I have the original OST, the orchestra arrangement, the piano arrangement, the Black Mages tracks and a few other albums. My four disc original OST is my pride and joy.

ManMarmalade484d ago

I agree on VIII. I've started growing really fond of X's lately.

GoodGuy09485d ago

Music was pretty good yes. Pretty much all FFs do even the crappy ones lol.
