The Witcher 3 Dev on Making a Stand Against Paid DLC

IGN - CD Projekt co-founder and joint CEO Marcin Iwiński tells IGN that the developer is releasing 16 free The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt downloadable post-launch content packs to make a statement against the “steeply priced” paid DLC economy.

“Because people just paid full price for our game,” Iwiński responded when we asked why the developer is releasing its next 16 DLC packs for free. “We owe them.”

“Yeah, we are making a statement,” he added. “We, as gamers, would like to be treated this way, 'Hey, give me free DLC.' It doesn't have to be something huge. And I'm saying we aren't giving out huge stuff, we aren't giving tens of hours of storyline here, we are giving small bits of pieces that don't cost a lot. And I think people would feel better about our game, and, so, they will enjoy the adventure even more.

This is the kind of thing I can get behind.

Same here. They already have my money anyway :)

DLC used to always be free, I believe it was Halo 2 that ruined that trend and forever changed that landscape.

This sort of stuff needs to happen more often

Publishers want to charge for every little thing. I mean we are paying ful, price that should account for some free content

Drive club is another example of how fee content is better

a lot of games are released twice and called GOTY or complete editions

This is even more amazing when you consider this:

The production time and money spent by CD Projekt Red, taking extra time and money to get it right...for us.

The fact that they ARE a genre that isn't for everyone. Yes, if it gets Skyrim type love, especially on PC, it could b quite big, bit it's a difficult long rpg. It doesn't have name recognition like the big IP'S do.

It's releasing on only next gen consoles (PC), so the base is quite limited.

And they arent published by Activision, Ubisoft or EA.

Considering all this, it's quite the statement to make, when quality alone would warrant charging for dlc, especially after giving us 120 hrs for $60.

Simply amazing!!
