Gaming History 101: Light Gun Shooters

This week Fred and Jam tackle the wonderful world of light gun shooters. What started as a mere carnival game evolved into one of the more interactive – and for some of us, fun – genres that has not withstood the test of time. With the advent of newer screens, the technology that made light guns possible is now ruined by delays of no more than a fraction of a second. In this episode we discuss the history, technology behind, and our fondest memories of the games that utilized the light gun peripheral.

Light gun games are some of my favorite. I played one in collage that that used a sensor to track your body and you had to physically duck behind shelter. Killed your legs but it was fun. Can't remember the name, post below if you know the name.

Terminator 2 Arcade1Up Cabinet Now Available for Preorder

"Terminator 2, the blockbuster movie from the 1990s, is still beloved today. The film was so huge that Midway released a light gun-style arcade game that was soon ported to 16-bit and 8-bit consoles and computers. Though older licensed games seldom get modern re-releases, Terminator 2: Judgement Day is just too tough to kill. Arcade1Up has opened preorders for a 3/4-scale home arcade cabinet with real light guns and 2-player co-op," says Co-Optimus.

This uses the sinden light guns which are meant to be quite good. I'd like a couple but looks like it's taking ages to reach people

I hope to own a cabinet that uses Sindens someday myself.

Very cool that the company is bringing the arcade back for home use. That's where a lot of the fun was. In the arcade with friends and family. That price though of possibly $700.... hmmm...NOPE. Will stick with MAME for the time being.

Wish some developer made a Terminator VR game though. Would be awesome.

As much I I love Mame it's not the same experience with mouse and Keyboard versus lightgun.
The same could apply to a Time Crisis Cabinet.

These things are just too damn expensive. I cannot justify spending $500-$1000 on these cabinets when they are only roms running in cheap tablets in an ikea box.

Petebloodyonion911d ago

OK now they have my attention!
I remember playing a lots of coins to play this game and let's be honest playing this game on a emulator versus holding the gun with force feedback is not the same experience.
Might be the 1st arcade cabinet that I will buy (I'm honestly always tempted till I remember that I own several version of said games).

Looking Back to 1985 and Duck Hunt

Dave writes: "Culturally, a characterful dog hasn’t been enough to put Duck Hunt in the same league as the big boys, like Zelda, Mario and Mega Man (although it does feature in the mighty Boyz in the Hood, so who am I to say?). Indeed, Super Mario Bros. would go on to ensure that the NES was seen as a timeless console and a success. But it was Duck Hunt - and the NES Zapper - that was really the starting pistol for everything that would follow afterwards."

I was playing this in VR on Dreams the other night - they'd done a great job of it and all the sounds effects were spot on!
