But .. We Used to Love Loot Boxes!

Amid the latest turmoil regarding Electronic Arts' microtransactions and loot crates in the full-price Star Wars Battlefront II, I wanted to take a minute to look back on something that I'll freely admit - I used to love loot boxes in my games.

No "we" didn't. I assume the author is using the "Royal We." But, I honestly prefer set rewards and the option to buy from lists where I determine what I want over RNG. Some RNG isn't bad, but what 'loot boxes' means now isn't what it meant last generation. Loot boxes have been abused in order to inflate game time and to encourage people to spend real world money. There's a huge difference between Diablo 3/Borderlands and what EA has done in almost every game in the last year.

Loot boxes have become a victim of increased profit focus. EA isn't losing money for not having loot boxes in SWBF2 right now. They've already made a good amount of profit. The only thing the loot boxes are doing is not giving them that highly inflated profit they wanted out of the game.

As the author - I can confirm the use of "Royal We"; my apologies for the missed inference.

You strike the best point that I hoped to convey myself - loot boxes have been abused as a manner of generating income and dependence upon RNG, where games you'd referenced (Borderlands 2 being a prime example) swung the pendulum the other way. I followed every Tweet from Randy (Pitchford) in hopes of getting those golden keys as often as possible to grab some super-loot in BL2, but never wished for the option to buy more. They were (and continue to be) a strictly optional service within the game, complementing it, rather than forming a founding pillar.

Great comment, thanks for chiming in!

RNG loot is nothing new in games at all. It's been a staple of MMO's for a couple decades now. Really the same concept. In some cases, just rare loot which may drop could also fall into the same category. Even RNG prizes from in game currency has been done before. But in those instances, the loot itself was structured and fair to accomidate the varied player base, or give players reason to keep playing.

But when one spends money on it, it defeats the purpose of playing the game, and if you pay to not play, but only get the chance to get the stuff you want, then it's not playing a game, it's what they say it is....gambling. One is taking a chance that their money will give them what they want. If those same prizes were available with the player knowing what they were getting, then no harm, no foul....although some people still take issue with it.

MMOs also offer markets for selling/trading gear that you otherwise have trouble getting. That alone is a massive difference in how they handle/treat loot as a commodity.

rainslacker2240d ago

In many cases yes. Some restrict what you can trade though so people can't circumvent the game play to get certain things. MMO's aren't immune from MT though, but for subscription service one's, you don't typically see P2W.

Twitter user @ScudzTV has calculated the real-world cost of creating his own dream eleven, in both hours invested and hard earned cash. He embarked on a seven tweet tirade, illustrating that to achieve this dizzying feat, a person would need to invest either twenty two thousand hours playing, or a poultry £80k ($111k).

Don't get me wrong. You can get a decent team by just playing. I have done this my self. Buy I agree to even get just one of these icons it's going to take such a grind to the point where even playing at intended is just not fun anymore or spending such a large amount of money.

This does not bode well.
