Valve’s Steam Link streaming box for PC gaming costs next-to-nothing right now

Techradar: Plus, you get a decent game too.

In a deal so good it made us think Black Friday had come early, Valve has absolutely slashed the price of its streaming box the Steam Link. Right now, you can pick up a Steam Link for a fraction of its usual price.

There is a 98% reduction in price, meaning the Steam Link is now a matter of pennies.

seems like it's no longer available... I had it in my cart, logged in and it's gone. Can no longer get to the page either.

TankCrossing2377d ago

Same here, but it's ok as I don't really want the game or the hardware :)

lelo2play2377d ago

Probably a mistake posting by Steam. They were practically giving it away...

It was over at 10am Pac time today.

Steam Link isn't worth it now. Even that cheap. Bite the bullet, pay the money and get a Nvidia Shield TV. Does everything Steam Link does and 1000 x more. My Steam Link is gathering dust and has been for some time. The controller was overhyped - have one still in the box never used. The Shield controller is the bomb. Love that thing - bought an extra.

godashram2376d ago

Have a Shield TV already. was interested for another TV in my home, where buying a Shield TV would be a waste of cash and overkill.

morganfell2376d ago

Depends on what you want to do and if you have the cash then you get what works. Like I said, mine and two controllers are just sitting on a shelf.

The game ICEY by itself is worth $9 at least.

The Steam app on my Samsung tv works okay, I wonder if this is any better?

Virtual Desktop app was already pretty good (not Oculus Link) for streaming Steam, but maybe Steam Link will be even better. Anything is better than Oculus Link though. I was surprised by how much more steady my wireless streaming was through Virtual Desktop over Oculus Link. It's a mess.

bOObies145d ago

Really?

I was gonna buy the OLink cable to connect to my laptop so I can watch and stream videos and Discord to my Quest 3.

You think wireless streaming to the headset is better than the Link cable?

In what ways?

OtterX145d ago

Sorry, I meant Oculus Airlink. Direct link fairs better, but I like playing on the sofa wirelessly.

Tacoboto145d ago

Digital Foundry's weekly show, I think two episodes ago they had a segment on the Meta Quest and playing on PC. John suggested that wireless Virtual Desktop had superior quality to the wired connection.

OtterX145d ago (Edited 145d ago )

@Tacoboto that is interesting to know! I had suspected it, but I didn't want to say it with certainty. But yea, it had seemed like my Virtual Desktop streaming sessions had been even more reliable. I don't hardly direct link it anymore. Love Virtual Desktop.

azedean145d ago

True, I played HL ALYX fully wireless with virtual desktop and it was very good. Now it is going to be awesome and I hope they finally have a good solution to use the psvr2 on pc.

specialguest145d ago

Oculus Link is pretty good if you use the D-Link VR Air Bridge. This is a product specifically created for the Quest that was released a year ago. It allows you to make a direct Wi-Fi 6 connection between your Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3 or Meta Quest Pro headset and your PC

Oculus airlink is garbage compared to Steamlink -- big W for valve

The same could be said about the Switch. It is a combination of the WiiU game pad and the nunchucks. Neither of those were incredible devices either but the refined combination of the two created a highly successful device.

Immagaiden1007d ago

The nunchuck was one of the most successful accessories in gaming. It made a ton of Wii games better

Notellin1007d ago

It was so good they immediately transitioned back to traditional control schemes after the novelty wore off from grandparents playing Wii bowling twice and ordering a Wii fit.

FallenAngel19841006d ago

@ Not

Wii U utilized nunchucks
Switch had a configuration that mimics the nunchuck configuration

Why does it feel like the media is trying to kill this thing before it gets a chance to even be released?

ScootaKuH1007d ago (Edited 1007d ago )

Yeah I don't really get it. I know Valve have a sketchy history when it comes to hardware but to me it seems the Steam Deck gets far more right than it gets wrong.

Of course we've only seen games playing on prototype systems but already it seems really polished and well thought out. I have faith that the Steam Deck will be a success. I've reserved a 512gb model and the estimated availability is Q2 2022 (UK) so plenty of time to see how it progresses in the coming months. Right now I think it looks really promising, but if, when it launches it's not all that, then I'll cancel and I'll have lost nothing. If, on the other hand, it proves to be every bit as good as promised then I'll be happy to be in the queue 👍

Zeref1007d ago

Nintendo fans feel threatened by it because they didn't get a Switch Pro

King_Noctis1007d ago (Edited 1007d ago )

CBR is owned and operate by Nintendo fan? Wow.

Zeref1007d ago

@King_noctis

I didn't say anything about CBR, don't put words in my mouth 😕

but at the same time yeah whoever wrote could be a Nintendo fanboy

MadLad1007d ago

Because gamers seem excited and games "journalists" get off on being contrarian.

derek1007d ago

I see the exact opposite going on.

annoyedgamer1007d ago

Because its open source. And the media like closed systems that they can control through proxy.

is the hardware upgradeable?

Trunkz1006d ago

Yes but you’d have to really dig inside to do such a thing, I’m sure people will make step by step YouTube videos on how to upgrade parts, tho you’d void the warranty.

foker1007d ago (Edited 1007d ago )

It is cool and all,.. but the thing is huge,.. might as well get a gaming laptop at that size

Zeref1007d ago

Lol it's barely 2 inches longer, you want me to get a big ass gaming laptop cuz of 2 extra Inches? Make it make sense

specialguest1006d ago (Edited 1006d ago )

Seems you can't please everyone. I've read another comment saying the battery is not long enough. Well, a larger battery would mean the handheld would be much larger and heavier, and possibly a little pricier. Now you're saying it's too huge. Well, if it's smaller then the thing would suffer from a hardware downgrade, and cooling might be affected. Then someone else will say it's too weak. It's an endless cycle of complaints
