Kill Strain Preview | PlayStation Insider

PSInsider author writes: We had the honor and privilege of being able to play a little game called Kill Strain this past weekend. San Diego Studio held a private event that they dubbed the “Friends and Family Recap” where they allowed a few lucky individuals access to a pre alpha version of the game.

With thousands of games over the years, it shouldn't be a surprise when a Kill Strain joins the litany of forgotten PS4 games.

Get on the Ball, Sony

Sony needs to quit wasting its time on mid-tier and free-to-play games like Drawn to Death and Kill Strain. Nobody wants them. They want quality games.

I'll say it again...what some folks may think is garbage someone else may think it's a treasure.Different strokes for different folks.

Knushwood Butt2434d ago

Diversity.

Not everyone wants to play Forza 7, or Mario's Fantastic Voyage 18.

dirkdady2434d ago

What kind of nonsense is this? PlayStation is pumping more exclusives than both Microsoft and Nintendo combined. Whatayawant you ungrateful sacks of dung.

rainslacker2434d ago (Edited 2434d ago )

Yeah, and that's what the author ignores. That their desires aren't everyone's desires. He may have a point if Sony didn't also have the kind of games that he claims to want....at least according to the description because I refuse to give cheatcc a click....but they most certainly do, and those games he says no one wants don't take up much time in Sony's marketing, and likely aren't getting huge resources behind them.

I can think of a ton of the mid-tier or lower budget games from Sony which have gone down in history as some of my favorites. Some games they have that didn't sell so well have been some great experiences. I'm not into every Sony game, but should we give up things like Hot Shots golf because it's not AAA? What about Gravity Rush, Freedom Wars, Puppeteer, or Dreams? LBP didn't start off as a AAA title, it just had that kind of quality to it.

The only time releasing these kinds of games is a problem, is when it's the only kind of games that they release. Even then, it just means I wouldn't be that interested in the products(see MS right now), and I'd willingly accept there are others that might actually like it. I'd never say they don't need those games, or need to drop them, Id just say they need to make more games that would cater to more people.

NXFather2434d ago

Well I would have agreed before you consider sales. So, I'm not saying they have no place(small games) but, they are not getting the horizon/uncharted sales.

FinalFantasyFanatic2434d ago

That's probably okay as long as their budget isn't big like AAA titles you mentioned, I imagine any reasonable person would do their best analysis and adjusted the budget to meet sales expectations (doesn't always work that way though).

StormLegend2434d ago

Umm.. what? we get quality AAA games and it's nothing wrong with having free-to-play games. Did you really wanna play a game called Gnomageddon? that sounds like trash and i'm glad Sony cancelled it. I know these cheap games tend to be terrible, but it's just something to play when buying the console.

5.3/10 game I'm certain most people never played let alone remember. Color me totally surprised.

Deep-throat2562d ago

At least it's F2P.

San Diego Studio should make more good games like their first one, The Mark of Kri

2562d ago
himdeel2562d ago

This game was not good from the start, so I'm not surprised. After a few betas it was clear this game was never going to be good.

Nodoze2562d ago

Mark of Kri is one of my favorite PS2 titles. Fantastic games. Picked up both of them from one of the recent sales. Love the setting and the art style.

Overload2562d ago

"San Diego Studio should make more good games like their first one, The Mark of Kri"

SDS makes MLB the show. Most of the developers that worked on Mark Of Kri don't work there anymore. After they left (they formed a studio) they started making an open world Flash game, that ended up being cancelled, it had the battle system of Mark Of Kri.

I vaguely remember seeing this name on a couple of lists here on N4G. Other than that I had no idea what this game was even about or if it was even out yet.

EatCrow2562d ago

Not the first time a Playstation game releases unnoticed. It's a bit of a shame. The idea was good. I for one, did know when it came out. And I do know that people here liked it.

Donnie812562d ago

It was awful that's all u need to know

IamTylerDurden12562d ago

Perhaps if u were involved in the PlayStation ecosystem you would've known?

gangsta_red2562d ago

@iamtyler

I am involved in the playstation ecosystem, it's called N4G.

Because it makes it look professional LMAO... (IKR?)

Christopher2562d ago (Edited 2562d ago )

That's the average score of the game based on reviews on N4G...

http://n4g.com/channel/kill...

ChronoJoe2562d ago

That average is from just 3 reviews, though.

Just goes to show that people just weren't interested in the game. I guess it wasn't marketed well, but I also think on paper, at a concepual level, it wasn't very interesting. It's like a dumbed down Moba with some weird, and ultimately unbalanced, three team mechanics.

It's not a game that anyone ever asked for. An idea that shouldn't have been greenlit into a fully fledged game. It's okay to make mistakes though. Sometimes allowing developers the freedom to make these mechanics is also what allows them to hit their biggest successes.

freshslicepizza2562d ago

i can understand them shutting down servers if they are dedicated servers that cost a lot of money but what about peer to peer games?

TankCrossing2562d ago

Even then, that's the biggest point of "cloud" hosting. It isn't expensive to spin up servers on-demand.

This one must really be a dud they'd prefer to consign to history.

SamPao2562d ago

You couldn't even form groups. It was just destined to fail.
At least when I tried it...

XanderZane2562d ago

I heard of it, but never knew it was released to the public.
Looks like a repetitive mess to me.

IamTylerDurden12562d ago

I think the problem is the tutorial, but Let it Die is a fantastic PS4 exclusive f2p and we just got Drawn 2 Death free on PS+ so it'll be ok.

I never heard of this, it actually sounds like a cool concept, clearly it didn't work out though.

I guess you could say that it is just another game with a poorly executed cool concept like with Drawn to Death and Hardware Rivals.

2562d ago
nitus102562d ago

At least with "Drawn to Death" that is a current PS4 free game if you have a PS+ subscription although you do need a PS+ subscription to play it. Whilst I am not interested in online shooters it would be interesting to see how long the game lasts when you have to pay for it.

The game "Hardware Rivals" is a combination of single player, couch co-op and multiplayer so even if interest in the online component wanes you can still play it.

nitus102562d ago

If you buy an online only game that game will only be playable as long as the servers that host it are available. Having a campaign (single or couch co-op) is a great way of keeping that game alive although obviously, that depends on the interest of the buyer.

Like it, on not all, online only games will have their servers shutdown (usually when interest wanes) eventually. How long? Well, that is a good question and one that is difficult to answer since there are online only games that date back to the late 1990's that are still played today while some fairly new games initially had a good start and now have only a few diehard players left.

I tried this for like 10 minutes, but didn't really get into it.

rdgneoz32562d ago

I tried the beta. Was OK, but the beta was annoying with you only being able to play during certain times (most being a couple hours during the selected days). That and during the beta my unlocked characters kept resetting without me getting the coins I earned/spent on them back.

After beta, never really heard anything about the game at all.

MasterCornholio2562d ago (Edited 2562d ago )

I remember seeing it once in one of Sony's conferences. To be honest I completely forgot about the game.
