PlayStation, once again the king of JRPGs

Ratty3297d ago (Edited 3297d ago )

Agreed but it's not getting much competition on that front xD. IMO, the only real competition being the next Xenoblade.

vishmarx3297d ago (Edited 3297d ago )

yeah, xeno looks great but 1 jrpg on an entire console is hardly any competition .if sony announce their 1st party jrpg to be dragoon, and rereveal tlg(thats bound to happen sometime lol) combined with lv5 new jrpg(confirmed) added to
ys8
dissidia
dq h 1 and 2
dq11
so 5
ffxv
kh3
ff14
bb
persona 5
and other smaller ones i tend to forget

the ps2 -2 era will officially be set in motion
not to mention western game development has vastly improved since then, heck i my wishful thinking turns out to be true, it just might even trump the ps2.

Relientk773297d ago

Yeah Xenoblade looks good, but like Vishmarx said above me. One JRPG vs like 10 on PS4, PS4 clearly has the advantage.

RpgSama3296d ago

Want to play Xenoblade SO MUCH!!!, but other than that there is nothing for me on the Wii U until they release the new Zelda (or Metroid).

PS4 has SO many at least on paper quality JRPGS that is just insane, the Psx/Ps2 era all over again, only wish I had as much free time now as I had back then, I know I will not be able to fully enjoy half of that list (if that), want to platinum everything but it's impossible with work in the way (Stupid Job, hahahaha)

Aloy-Boyfriend3296d ago

I'm a bit disappointed with Xenoblade. I though the combat was somethign like Star Ocean. I don't like auto attack mechanics in my RPG games. Or, maybe I'm doing it wrong?

Ratty3296d ago

@XiKurapikaKurta

I agree with you on that one. I still can't pass a game made by Tetsuya Takahashi though... even if I did pass the first one xD

breakpad3296d ago

@vishmarx you forgot Disgaea 5 an already released and very well made tactical Jrpg

mikeslemonade3296d ago

Petition to cancel the PS3 version please!

lol, its sorta always been that.

dirkdady3296d ago

Remember when Microsoft bragged when they announced star ocean last hope as Xbox 360 exclusive last gen? Yea that was a thing.

3-4-53296d ago

Actually this gen, I'd give the 3DS the "king of JRPG's" for right now.

Vita would be second, but there are too many of the same type.

Regardless, more JRPG's or RPG's in general, regardless of platform is a good thing right now.

Xer0_SiN3296d ago (Edited 3296d ago )

they should remaster dragon force! you guys remember that game? thats a great srpg. that and valkyria chronicles. the king of rpgs would get sega to do it ;).

WMANUW3296d ago

I love playstation for this , Its the japan games machine...

Muzikguy3296d ago (Edited 3296d ago )

Yes!!! I'm ready for this. The more JRPGs the better!

nitus103296d ago

I don't mind turn-based, active turn-based and real time which can almost be considered active turn-based. What can get annoying (at least for me) is to be put into a battle arena which "sort of" resembles the area the protagonists are in and all of the Final Fantasy (exception is FF12) are like that.

This is not to say the battle arena is bad it is just I prefer a game that when you fight you don't move to a battle arena.

I think if I remember correctly Star Ocean - International Edition (PS3) you did not fight in a battle arena and I did like the game.

Personally I have always preferred Japanese RPG's over the so called Western RPG's however I do like to judge a game on it's merit since you can get real lemons or maybe I just don't like the sub genres of some.

StormLegend3297d ago

I hope it's coming out this year..

Abriael3297d ago

I don't think that's possible. We're already in April, and it's slated as TBA... probably 2016.

kowan3296d ago

It's only 30% complete so I guess 2016 is the most probable release date.

Lionalliance3297d ago

Screenshots? these are the same scans lol

AndrewLB3296d ago

My thoughts exactly. And your assumption is correct.

If anyone doesn't believe me, right click on the "screenshots", open image in new window, then drag it to your desktop. Then use any photo editing program to check the RAW data and you'd see they are 96dpi. Had they been actual screenshots, they'd be 72dpi like every other PS4 game.

TheColbertinator3297d ago

Looking snazzy. Next up should be Tales for the PS4

Relientk773297d ago

I hope the next Tales game is on PS4, after Tales of Zestiria

remixx1163296d ago

Yeah they said after zesteria, the tales series will be officially moving to ps4 which is great.

Relientk773296d ago

Didn't know that remixx, thanks thats great

spacedelete3297d ago

looks the same as Star Ocean 4.

While I agree that the combat in Star Ocean 5's combat is pretty fun, saying that its story is more enjoyable than its predecessors is highly debatable. Also, it's not just the technical issues the game suffers from.

Gaming4Life19811548d ago

Star Ocean 5 was garbage and I was a huge star ocean fan.

Docmortem1548d ago

Completely disagree the games I played from the list all deserve their scores (Star Ocean, Nier, Tales of Zesteria, Type-0). While there are certainly people that love these games, they have flaws in many categories, that justify those scores.
Star Ocean especially bored the hell out of me. Lame story and face roll battle system (I finished the game anyway). These games are really niche and when rated by a broader public, fall short. In my opinion even in their own genre.

solideagle1548d ago

I personally have not played any game below 80 and thought wow this should have been 80-90 game. The only game I thought should have been 90 was Shadow Hearts II: Covenant. I am pretty sure there will be some games but average score usually is pretty good indication.

do you recommend any JRPG which you think were good/amazing but it didn't score well? I just purchased Tokyo xanadu but it seems way too slow like trails game but trail at least has good story. I will give it a shot

rainslacker1548d ago

I think there were quite a few JRPG games that got hit with lower meta scores last gen when all these reviewers were on their anti-anime tropes kick. Not that they should get up there into the high 80s or 90s, but they weren't 60-70 games either.

That's mostly died off this gen, thankfully

WickedLester1548d ago

Ni No Kuni 2 is way better than it's metascore.

solideagle1548d ago

I think Ni No Kuni 2 combat is pretty generic but if you add all DLCs then its combat is pretty awesome. I purchased the complete edition so I can say DLC changes the combat completely

FinalAeonX1548d ago

Ni no Kuni 1 is way better than its metascore

Father__Merrin1548d ago

meta scores are rubbish best ignore them. many gems out there

solideagle1548d ago (Edited 1548d ago )

can you please name few?

Kocurstvo1548d ago (Edited 1548d ago )

Useless to argument troll, but e.g. Eat Lead is hilarious and extremely funny, yet mediocre on metastupids.... Lords of the Fallen, Strange brigade... I could name hundreds

A beginner's guide to Star Ocean

Star Ocean is one of those series that did, and still does, things that others don’t. Think of it as a JRPG for fans of series like Star Trek. The casts regularly involve people from more advanced civilizations getting involved with those who are still growing, even though there are various measures in place to allegedly stop that sort of interference. As a result, people get energy weapons, cyborgs, magic and people who can turn into cats. It is a lot to take in.

Let's see here. There was another classic JRPG series that started this SCI Fi. It was Phantasy Star by Sega. Before Star Ocean, there was Phantasy Star 1-4 on Sega consoles

Bhuahahaha1604d ago

a beginners guide to star ocean....after playing the 3rd game
you've been told that the universe (SO lore) is just a ------------------- and close the book

VsAssassin1604d ago

Yeah, that plot twist didn't work for me. I wish SO3 isn't canon, but it is. Anyway, SE can just sweep SO3 under the rug perhaps by soft rebooting the franchise.

Nerdmaster1604d ago

The first two were so great, among the top RPGs on 16 and 32-bit era. I wonder why it went downhill after that...

LiViNgLeGaCY1604d ago

I still regard the 2nd Story as one of the greatest JRPG's of all time.

ChronoJoe1604d ago

Play the PS1 game and then the PS2 game and then the rest probably aren't worth your time unless you're a superfan of the series. I think that's all you need to know.

That's the focus of The Most Disappointing Video Game Sequels, and now we're at the fifth installment.
