Final Fantasy XV's Combat Is More Complex Than it Seems, Director Clarifies: It’s Not a Casual Game

During a livestream mainly focused on Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata explained that combat in the game is more complex compared to previous descriptions that caused intense controversy between fans, worried about the game taking an excessively casual turn.

I'm fully ok with this kind of backtracking. Honestly the previous quote seemed to have been taken out of context.

TheLyonKing3492d ago

Yeah I think it was too. A lot of the game mechanics had already been established and I doubt him as a new director would change it up a lot. Good to hear they are openly speaking about this game now though. The days where it used to be months on months with no information are over now :)

nX3492d ago

Still I can't shake off the bad feeling I have about this game... hopefully they know what they're doing, I don't want to bury Final Fantasy in my graveyard of ruined franchises.

Hozi3492d ago

As usual with almost any game coming out, we have some wanna be journalists trying to earn a few sec. in the topic spotlight by taking pieces of info from Devs. and just going crazy with it to bre up a raging storm of angry fans.

I for one knew that this game wasn't going to be easier and just for casual gamers...what he meant is that there are things put in place to fill that void should the gamer want to do it a different or faster way.

For example, the car. You can run around the world as much as you like, but you also have the option to drive you car. Makes sense considering older FF games had cars, chocobos, airships to get around with.

I am giving my own opinion here so don't kill me but I also believe the combat won't be just keep mashing a button to get what you want. From what we've seen with the game there are so many different actions or commands that noctis would have to control him they decided to make it more accessible to gamers to perform the sweet and stylish moves without the hassle of digging through a cluttered menu of text. I don't know if they will have the option to play like the older FF games which were turn based or if they are going to focus on making combat feel more action oriented but more choices is always better.

Irishguy953492d ago

Well his quotes never made much sense in the first place, especially coming from him for the fact that he's proven himself a great dev

nX3492d ago

His quotes make more sense than your comment(s).

Double_Oh_Snap3492d ago (Edited 3492d ago )

The presentation was very good, I am satisfied. I love how transparent Tabata and Square are being on the development of XV. He answered every question directly and detailed. I look forward to the next one on November 1st. Bringing the new combat video to show off what he was saying was a great touch as well.

Abriael3492d ago (Edited 3492d ago )

"He answered every question directly and detailed."

Unlike someone else. Too bad people immediately wanted to stone Tabata as soon as Nomura stepped down.

Double_Oh_Snap3492d ago

Yeah, Versus info was pretty bad. People wanting to stone Tabata over Nomura is dumb. People getting upset over his past comments bit of a different story.

Kumomeme3492d ago

looks like square learn alot from ffxiv's yoshi p method

jmac533492d ago

Square has done a great job the last few years in making me lose complete interest in anything they are doing.

Glad that I absolutely can't stand subscription services.

Petebloodyonion8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

I don't recall Sony forcing you to subscribe like nobody forced you to go to Blockbuster to rent games instead of buying them.

SonyStyled8d ago

Pay-per-view was almost cheaper than the cost of gas and rental fee from Blockbuster. Blockbuster doesn’t exist today. Are you being sarcastic?

Final Fantasy XV Review – A Royal Road Trip

Gary Green said: With my fondness for (most) Final Fantasy games and my side goal of finishing off games in my collection with loose ends, a return to Final Fantasy XV seemed inevitable. It also serves as my third Final Fantasy platinum trophy after VII and VIII, a reasonable substitute since Final Fantasy IX is nigh on impossible to master.

Final Fantasy 15 director reveals why he left Square Enix, and announces he's working on 2 new JRPGs

Final Fantasy 15's director has revealed why he left Square Enix back in 2018.

Hajime Tabata famously resigned from Square Enix two years after Final Fantasy 15 shipped in 2016. In a special livestream at the time, Tabata announced his decision to resign from the company, cancelling three of four new story-focused DLC episodes for Final Fantasy 15 in the process.

FF15 is like FF13 its subjective people either like it or hate it.

raWfodog140d ago

I liked it. I haven’t played the royale edition yet but I’ll get around to it one day.

gold_drake140d ago

no no, 15 wasnt trash.

15 had a tremendous difficult development.

FinalFantasyFanatic138d ago

I really believe 13 was better put together and more complete than 15 ever was.

EternalTitan139d ago

Found the pathetic troll.
How is your jobless life going?
Dot worry, you will never get a job or a girlfriend haha!

Hofstaderman140d ago

Man inherited a train wreck and was expected to release this game in under two years after it spent a better part of a decade in development hell. At one point there was even plans to make FFXIII Versus a musical. He did what he could.

TheColbertinator140d ago

I didn't care much for XV and I always wanted the original vision of Versus XIII but I think the dev team did what they could to salvage the project

Inverno139d ago

And yet people still blame him for the game turning out the way it did, rather than SE for the horrible mismanagement of 13 and Namura for being overly ambitious.

Dwarrior140d ago

Whatever the behind-the-scenes went on over the many years, at the end of the day it was a radical change in direction that I could not go along with. Also why I never bought 16.

gold_drake140d ago

this is also why Sakaguchi (spelling) left.
