Stealing Halo fans from Microsoft: Why Destiny is Sony's ace in the hole this winter

Dealspwn: "But Destiny's out on Xbox One too, right? It is indeed, but it probably won't sell Xbox One consoles. That PS4 Destiny bundle, however, is raking in the pre-orders."

I thought they already "stole" halo fans with the PS4 itself? Destiny is just the icing on the cake I guess.

I for one am delighted that the great bungie are no longer restricted to a single console and this gen, everyone gets to experience the fruits of their labour.

I was always 1-2 achievements away from 100% halo 3/reach/halo4 (halo:ce/halo 2 didn't have achievements, of course :D ), so I'm gonna try make destiny the first "halo" I get all the trophies/achievements for. Assuming there's no ridiculous online based ones like "get ten headshots in a row on iron banner without dying". NEVER getting that without fluking it.

CaptainPunch3565d ago

"I thought they already "stole" halo fans with the PS4 itself? Destiny is just the icing on the cake I guess. " Why would Halo fans come over to a system that doesn't offer their favorite game? Besides Destiny is both on Xbox One and PS4. If you're a Halo fan you're fine on either platforms.

christian hour3565d ago (Edited 3565d ago )

If you read the rest of my comment, you'd see the first part was entirely tongue in cheek and more a stab at the clickbait construct of the headline, especially considering that Destiny is still coming to xbox360/1. But if you want to take a sentence form my comment out of context I have no problem with that :)

I only know one guy getting an xb1 (specifically for the MC collection, and cos his 360 just red ringed) and he is a halo legend, guy can no scope all day long without a second thought, in fact our friendship was founded on halo:ce. He was up in mine on saturday for the UFC and I let him play Destiny for a while, threw him straight in to the Iron Banner. Did it make him want to buy a ps4? Nope. Not at all. It just made him want to get his XB1 sooner so he can play Destiny come september :)

Darkfist3565d ago

say that to those fanboys who complained about "timed exclusives"

SaffronCurse3565d ago

Bungie doesn't make Halo anymore.

NewMonday3565d ago

Halo was something you only get on Xbox, now that the next big thing from Bungie is on PS4 the pulling power of Halo is not as It used to be .

Also Halo 4 did no favors for the franchise, convinced many people to move on.

Sure Halo will still have dedicated fans like any franchise, but they are 30-50% of buyers, look at Nintendo games on the WiiU, Mario is still selling but nowhere near the numbers of Mario games on the Wii.

Mr Pumblechook3565d ago (Edited 3565d ago )

Halo 4 was fun but it did seem a bit different from the previous games - which was to be expected considering the game was made by an entirely different development team who had no hand in the original games.

What I've played of the Destiny alpha and beta on PlayStation 4 had me metaphorically punching the air with joy. The game has the fingerprints of Bungie all over it, obviously it doesn't have Master Chief in it but to me it actually FELT more like Halo then Halo 4. Which is to be expected considering it's made by the team that created and built Halo 1, 2, 3, Reach and the most excellent ODST. So of course Destiny is not a Halo game but to me it feels like its spiritual sequel.

Early adopter Xbox One owners will get the XB one version of the game, PlayStation 4 owners will get the PS4 version of the game. But I know a few folks who have yet to get a next gen console and know about the Destiny Alpha on PlayStation. To non-hardcore this SEEMS like a PlayStation 4 game.

Just my personal opinion.

AngelicIceDiamond3565d ago (Edited 3565d ago )

Stealing Halo fans umm no.

Halo fans are waiting for the massive collection, Halo 5 beta and release in 2015.

SilentNegotiator3565d ago (Edited 3565d ago )

"Why would Halo fans come over to a system that doesn't offer their favorite game?"

It says Halo "fans", not "people whose favorite game is Halo that could never live without it"

Legacy2123565d ago

^ silent
if you're a fan of something why would you go to a system that doesnt have it? Also the game iz multiplat you guys nees to chill its to funny seeing people here act like destiny is exclusive to ps4 cuz it has timed dlc and a destiny bundle and early access to a beta that is currently down.
If im a fan of a certain sports team why would I cheer for another team. Im a fan of persona hence why I own all the personas. Fan of kingdom heart hence why I own all the kingdom hearts. If your a fan of something 90% of the time youll find a way to play it

ZodTheRipper3565d ago

I seriously missed the Halo hypetrain, I'm always much more excited about RPG's than simple shooters. Destiny is far more appealing to me and I'm glad that I'm not missing out on any content with this.

b163o13564d ago (Edited 3564d ago )

Never stopped M$ fans from throwing all there timed exclusives in our faces ie GTAIV and CoD. So yeah I for one am bragging about our timed exclusives. All the time you all had your DLC early you'll made sure to let us know about it. So now that the shoe is on the other foot you'll want to down play you'll ignorance. Trust me M$ fans will know when we get our hands on our DLC early, cause they sure in the hell let us know.....

kickerz3564d ago

Well if u have an Xbox 1 u can play destiny (in 1080p) and halo so..... It's a win win

Nathan893564d ago (Edited 3564d ago )

@MrPumblechook you're joking right? 343 industries is owned by microsoft and a good chunk of people from bungie left to join 343 to continue the series. They were involved with all previous entries

christian hour3564d ago

To the people wondering why halo "fans" would go to a console without halo? Well, my story doesnt really answer this correctly as every gen I've been a multi-console owner, but...

I am a HUGE halo fan, who has owned a ps3 and owns a ps4. It's not an unusual thing.

In fact I'm a bit of an uber-fan, I used to hold halo lan parties all the time (while im on the subject, is it just me or is the lan option in games becoming less and less frequent?), a flash video I made about how everyone will call in sick when halo 2 releases was featured on the front page of bungie, and my old band even wrote songs that we could play halo to.

So yeah, I'm a halo fan. And I'm gaming on ps4. I used to be a multi-console owning gamer but right now, as big a fan I am of halo, and as a huge gaming enthusiast regardless of platform, even the much desirable MC collection is not enough to convince me to buy in to the XB1 just yet, simply because I'm not that forgiving of horrible industry conduct and MS's big middle finger to the consumer last year has put me off the console entirely.

Not to say I wont buy an xb1 eventually, I love games too much not to, but as a consumer, right now, I can't support microsoft for their behaviour, even if I love Halo a little bit too much.

I got way off point, it being that halo "fans" will buy ps4's, not for halo per say, but that it's silly to think halo fans would stick to one console because, Halo. Even though a friend of mine is doing this very thing, he's not a generalisation of halo fans.

For people like myself who are big Halo fans, but not willing to trust Microsoft again just yet with our wallets [I actually dont have a wallet :'( ] Destiny is a pure slice of halo from the source itself, until Halo 5 arrives and we cant help but need to know where the story goes next. And I LOVED halo 4's story because it finally took on board all the expanded stuff fleshed out in novels etc, and it has me excited for what halo 5 will do, this inclusion of the continuty made outside of the games was defintiely influenced by Frankie O Connor, and speaking of Frankie...

@nathan89

the only real person that left bungie for 343 that mattered was Frankie O Conner, and even he joined after halo 1's release (coming from editor of OXM) as the face for their community, writing weekly updates and relaying info to the fans.

In fact nobodys done a better job since then , in my personal opinion. Eventually as Halo 2's development finished up he was given more access to the lore and the infamous "halo bible", his love for the game and its universe eventually landed him the role of being in charge of all the lore.

And now he's at 343 and he's the best person for it story wise. No other major player at bungie went to 343 that I know of, the McLees's are still at bungie last I checked, so was staten until recently, and of course marty's gone now too, but none of these people are at 343. Though I can see staten getting involved with Halo again now that he's a big player over at MS.

SilentNegotiator3564d ago (Edited 3564d ago )

@Legacy212

I'm a fan of the Dead Rising series but I didn't buy an Xbox One. What's the big deal? You can be a fan of a VG series and not buy the system with that series. If a similar IP was coming out on both Ps4 and Xbone, I would just be all the more tempted to go with the Ps4.

"Fan", not "Superfan that can't go without"

That's nothing in dc universe online there is a feat where you have to win 50 online matches in a row. I'll never get that one. Some ache invents are just ridiculous

Zombro3565d ago

Destiny and halo are two different styles of games so you only play one type of game hmmmmmmmmm

carlosjrix3565d ago

Why do i need to go with ps4 when the game is coming to xb1? I see no sense in Ur argument. With Xbox one u get halo and destiny. And yes.. I bought an Xbox one for halo.. Destiny its a plus for halo fans.

b163o13564d ago

What is the hype with Halo. To me it was just one of the first online fps that worked well. Other then that its a crap game, go to a point push a button and back track to the beginning. To me that horrible level design, after that I haven't pick up another halo. I just don't see the hype

carlosjrix3564d ago

@b163o1
Thats your opinion my friend.. TO ME halo is legendary awesome.. and not just for me.. sales numbers speak for themselves..

b163o13564d ago

Can't do anything but respect that

UltraNova3564d ago

@carlosjrix

Although I respect your preference in Halo, I'm a sucker for sci-FY fantasy story my self but your ending point is... weightless.

Wii Sports sold approximately 2.5 times more than the sales of Halo 1,2,3,ODST and 4 combined. A single Wii game trumps everything in sight including your favorite game of all time, whatever that might be.

Is quality really measured in numbers?

A friendly advice, next tine keep it to just being a fan of something don't use numbers that are vulnerable to multi-sided interpretation.

This article is flamebait. Gamers are going to enjoy on both systems and the Xbox One owners and all halo fans are going to get ready for MCC collection.

Mega243565d ago (Edited 3565d ago )

Some games need to pass on the torch, Halo needed to end at the third one, and a new series in the same universe could have been born, but Microsoft wanted more halo and Bungie decided not to renew their contract.

If Bungie had stayed in MS, and MS would have let them have the freedom they wanted, Bungie would have tied in all the series, Marathon, Halo, and Destiny under the same universe... because some things in the 3 series are to similar to be coincidence.

This is my opinion.

JBSleek3565d ago

If you are a Halo fan Destiny on PS4 isn't stealing you away from Xbox One.

It is a multiplatform game so you would simply still have an Xbox One so you can play Destiny and Halo.

I'm not saying that Xbox 360 fans aren't enjoying the PS4 just that Destiny surely isn't the reason.

Eonjay3565d ago (Edited 3565d ago )

I agree. If Halo fans do come to the PS4 (even if they get the White Bundle) its not Bungie stealing from Microsoft. Its Sony. Its all Sony. How can Bungie be stealing fans if its also on Xbox One?

DanteVFenris6663565d ago

It's because it's advertised heavily for ps4 so some people forget it's multiplatform. Like how Titan fall was seen as a xone exlusive even though it was for the 360 and PC as well.

Legacy2123565d ago

Dante
Except titanfall on 360 was made by a completely different team, came out month later, gets updated late, and looked better on x1

DanteVFenris6663564d ago (Edited 3564d ago )

@Legacy and why you think it came late? That was just more advertisement so it would make it appear like it was only for xone, for those that do no research unlike us. Obviously the graphics would be worst but the core game the same.

And it worked people people were buying xones for a game they could already get with the console they had. Honestly do you think people bought xones for Titan fall bought it for the slight graphics upgrade? No it's because the casual thought it was exclusive

RantandRave3565d ago

@JBSleek

+1 Bubble "Well Said"

You would think that N4G would limit the amount of articles that deliberately cause arguments, especially since this is multi-platform game. Just saying enough already!

MasterCornholio3565d ago

Well that's true. A Halo fan wants to play Halo and the only place to do that is the Xbox One. However people who are not huge fans of Halo might have switched to PS4 and won't buy the Xbox One. But that's a different matter altogether.

I agree with what you said.

princejb1343565d ago

You can't deny the similarity between destiny and halo is epic. The multiplayer at least to me plays exactly like halo.

HaveAll33565d ago

I agree! I'm a big Halo fan and I'm more excited about Halo collection and Halo 5. But looking forward to Destiny but on Xbox One to go with my Halo games. I hate how these companys are acting like these 3RD PARTY games are exclusive, Xbox did it yesterday with Evolve and AC unity, STOP IT!

Lol, they are not stealing anything. It's good that Playstation fans will now get to experience Bungie and their amazing halo like game.

OrangePowerz3565d ago (Edited 3565d ago )

Playstation fans already got to experience Bungie with Oni on PS2 :-)

SoapShoes3565d ago

I doubt they're stealing Halo fans as Halo fans will have both consoles. They will get an X1 exclusively for Halo.

user74029313565d ago (Edited 3565d ago )

I think its awesome ps4 gets exclusive destiny content.

i cant wait for the playstation exclusive weapons.

.monte carlo assault rifle.

.the hawkmoon

and maps as well

like the dust palace strike.

and exodus blue.

not to mention the extra gear and ships.

feels good ;)

DillyDilly3565d ago (Edited 3565d ago )

Sony paying extra does wonders

GW2123565d ago

Correct.

That's how exclusive content deals work in general. Pay money, get more. In fact, it's kind of how the general economy works too! Crazy, right?

funkybudda3564d ago

Sony learned it from the best in the business, *cough* Microsoft *cough*

b163o13564d ago

M$ did Sony in last gen with there timed exclusives, Sony just adapted to sign of the times. It also doesn't hurt that there system is a lot easier to develop on this Gen....

Destiny Made Over $160 Million In Microtransaction Revenue In Less Than 2 Years

Destiny has made over $160 million in MTX revenue, and these numbers only account the data from late 2017 to early 2019.

That's extremely low for microtransactions, especially for a game that's essentially designed around it

LucasRuinedChildhood332d ago (Edited 332d ago )

This was back when the game wasn't free to play.

The figures are from November 2017 to February 2019 (1 year and 4 months).

Based on that projection, the MTX revenue for Destiny 2 likely would have been closer to ~$240m for 2 years.

Not sure if premium expansions are included in that figure either although ... I'd hope that they are though and that most of the revenue was for actual content like Forsaken.

People spend way too much money on cosmetics.

Rude-ro331d ago (Edited 331d ago )

Seasons($10 and just got bumped to $12) and dungeon keys($10 each, two a year) are through the eververse(micro transaction) store.
So for those two years, in order to play a season, you would pay through micro transactions.

Sonic1881331d ago (Edited 331d ago )

Bungie Marathon will be worse since it's designed around it as well

Kurt Russell331d ago

It makes me sad to agree... but at the same time I am looking forward to giving it a go. Destiny 2 is so far in, I find it difficult to figure out what I am meant to do first.

buffig331d ago

I think FIFA alone makes over $1bn a year from mtx

anast331d ago

FIFA promotes a worldwide sport. It should make more money than destiny.

CantThinkOfAUsername331d ago (Edited 331d ago )

Let's compare something similar. Apex Legends and its ridiculous $18/$40 skins make EA a billion each year.

z2g331d ago

For as much as ppl complain how much they hate microtransactions, they sure don’t act like it. No wonder they aren’t going anywhere.
