Why Does Sony Keep Outselling Microsoft?

How much is social media marketing contributing to the success of eight-generation consoles like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One? More than you think, say experts, along with competitive pricing.

because it had way better first impression than xbox one and been cheaper for a half year

don't get me wrong, X1 is an amazing system and i love it and so is ps4

ps4 is the fastest selling system of all time and Xbox one is selling 2.2 faster than the good selling xbox 360..... it is what best for business

it's great time to a gamer

guyman3570d ago

It will only be a great time to be a gamer next year, that's if a person has both consoles

SamPao3570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

You don't need those two you are talking about to have a great time
Also don't forget nintendo

uptownsoul3570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

@alexKoepp That can't be the only reason... because of the 13 markets the Xbox One is in, the PS4 is edging them out in all 13 countries.

ziggurcat3570d ago

@ alex:

moot. in the regions that both systems are available, PS4 outsells xbone, so you can't use the, "bu-bu-but xbone is only in 13 regions!" argument.

Th4Freak3570d ago

I have a PS4 and a Wii U and i'm quite sure i'll have a great time next year, I don't need a Xbone.

MysticStrummer3570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

@alex - Shouldn't XB1 be winning in any market, especially one of it's stronger markets, before that argument can hold a shred of validity?

I think the current numbers reflect MS's bungled 2013, the weaker later years of the 360, and for some people, lingering RRoD memories. I know more than one person who swore they'd never buy another MS console before XB1 was even revealed.

Going with weaker hardware for the sake of including Kinect didn't help, and making Kinect optional doesn't change that hardware.

Meanwhile, Sony released a console designed to be good for developers with more power at a cheaper price, improved an already great controller, and they managed to at least seem more gamer and developer friendly while doing it.

Both have good games, but Sony's image worldwide is something MS can't compete with.

bicfitness3570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

You know, Guyman, I'm getting tired of people preaching console agnosticism. Reality check, the PS4 is outselling its nearest competitor for a number of reasons; none of which are particularly earth-shattering to an observant individual.

- Despite the doomsayers on N4G, or concern trolls, the PS4 actually has more games overall, over twice as many out and in development, as the X1. Check any list you choose. Among those are F2P titles, that have no PS+ requirement or cost of entry.
- Exclusives are sparse on BOTH systems, AND Sony has 2015 on lockdown with Bloodborne and the Order. Let's not forget No Man's Sky, either (probably late 2015). All the hype for late-Winter,/ early next year is riding with them.
- Multiplats, which make up 90% or more of console software purchases play BETTER on the PS4. In the age of social media, this fact has spread far and wide to the lowliest of console peasants.
- With both machines at $399, the PS4 still offers a better value for the library, performance and simple consumer preference. It won the early mindshare, and its not going to lose it anytime soon.
- We now have MS REMOVING features--Kinect, questionable dev-kit support--simply to achieve price parity, yet not product or performance parity.
- MS's messaging has been horrific and confusing from the start and its barely gotten any better. Not a single head seems to know what the other is doing.
- On the contrary, Sony's messaging has been on point from the start and they've hardly missed a beat or opportunity. All of their execs also share the same script and vision. If they aren't confused, its easier for consumers to have faith in the product.

There is no need for both consoles when one just has more options, games and appeal. The end. But let's keep creating mythic goalposts of "exclusives" and "out in more countries" and "wait for NPD". Or let's suddenly make the unrealistic demand that in order to be a "real gamer" you need to spend another thousand dollars or so on a poorly-conceived machine just to keep this gluttonously cash-gorged industry afloat. Sometimes, products and visions need to fail. If MS stays for another console cycle, you can be sure that they will try harder to appease--and not ignore--consumer voices. In the meantime, if you want an X1 for the dribble of exclusives each year, that's fine, but its not a reasonable argument to propose to Joe gamer just looking to play FIFA with his mates.

NatureOfLogic_3570d ago

Many reasons. Better hardware, first party games, better looking/performing third party games, indie support, games first approach, DS4, VR leader for consoles, cloud gaming leader for consoles, f2p support, PS plus setting the standard, better console design(my opinion), playroom, unchanged laser focused vision unlike MS or Playstation long history of great hardware and software support. Pick one.

Darkstares3570d ago

It keeps outselling because,

1. Up until June it was the cheaper system
2. The hardware is technically superior for the same price now (before June it was $100 cheaper)
3. Sony has always done better than Microsoft globally but the XB1 hasn't been released in as many markets yet.
4. Better vision from the start, Microsoft spent a long time trying to fix the image of the XB1.
5. The PS4 still gets more game content, mainly from having more Japanese support and better relations so far with indie developers.
6. This is a big one, they have the momentum and it's hard to stop that unless the XB1 starts to either get unique features or software that isn't available on the PS4.

Army_of_Darkness3570d ago

@alexko

Oh yeah..... Totally bro cause we ALL know that the rest of the world cares deeply for the xbone and would have taken first place in next gen console sales if only... If only MS knew this themselves! And to think, you would have thought ms would realize the potential from their 360 worldwide sales... Oh wait... ;-)

Testfire3570d ago

Better hardware, better franchises (imo), track record for console support throughout it's life cycle. The value overall is just better.

I recently just bought a 360 though with a slew of exclusives and I must say I'm having a lot of fun with it. MS got many things right, and some even better than the PS3. But in the end Sony offers a lot more value in their consoles, they always have.

GTgamer3570d ago

Smh look at history And you will know why.PlayStation has been up their with the top Contenders such as Nintendo thanks to the PlayStation 1 then PlayStation2 destroyed the competition and took the crown and Then X360 came out and trust me MS got lucky because Sony Screwed up and you all know that's true so Xbox 360 came in but the PS3 caught back up while Nintendo took the crown for the last generation but this is a whole new Generation and Playstation seems to be regaining the crown because guess who screwed up this generation but one thing i learned from history is that Playstation can be unstoppable once in the lead.

Utalkin2me3570d ago

@guyman

Yep i own a Ps4 and WiiU

And BTW the title is rhetorical.

showtimefolks3570d ago

guyman

I don't think so, majority of the games will be same on ps4/xbox one. Its only the exclusives and that comes down to personal preference. I personally don't have the time for 2 consoles but if i did than my 2nd choice would be wii-u because of Nintendo's exclusives

on topic:

The reason ps4 is selling better is because sony has been giving mixed messages. They are laser focused while MS is still in recovery mode. Also ps4 is the better consoles tech wise.

PlayStation is a stronger brand and it seems like these are the good old days of ps1/ps2

sony has to mess up in a huge way for ms to have any chances of catching them/ world wide selling 4-1 and here in states 2-1

kreate3570d ago

Even if u dont own any consoles, its always a great time to be a gamer.

Rimeskeem3570d ago

And the wallet of bill gates

Giul_Xainx3570d ago

Because;
It's PlayStation.
It's Sony.
It's a parallelogram.
It's youtube capable.
It's small.
It's black.
It's sleek.
It's new.
It has a blue line.
It comes with a recharable battery.
It comes with a controller.
It offers free games with its service.
It doesn't invade our privacy.
It doesn't have HDCP anymore.
It connects with my PS Vita.
It can play the games I want.
It can be used as a projectile.
You can choke someone with its power chord.

TheGreatAndPowerful3570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

Because its a better product and has better services and its studios put out better games? The only thing the Xbone has going for it is COD and Halo and that's about it.

calis3570d ago

If any of the regions that Microsoft hasn't released the XB1 were actually big regions that make a difference, Microsoft would have released them there already.

Jury3570d ago

Garbage. I have a great time just with my playstation. I don't have enough time to play all the great games on it so I sure don't need an xbox

UltraNova3570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

I don't wanna sound negative here but did anyone else get the diminishing vibe towards Sony's success?

I mean look at the ending line "Though Sony is currently in the lead, Microsoft could pull ahead with some amazing Xbox One-exclusive content and an improved social media presence. "

??

How can you pull ahead of someone by using the exact same strategy as they do? Just look at 2015 what could MS possibly reveal that could trounce UC4 considering Halo is already announced?

As for "an improved social media presence" I think its safe to say this gen MS will be fighting a losing battle on this one..,.

IBT should get a hint on professionalism.

ShinMaster3570d ago

Because the PlayStation brand is bigger worldwide than Xbox. Period.

If the Xbox 360, with its insane marketing, 1 year head start, more initial developer support and easier to develop for architecture couldn't outsell the PS3 by being $1-200 cheaper. What makes people think the PS4 was gonna be outsold this time around when it doesn't suffer from many of the limitations the PS3 had.
Xbox One has none of the advantages the 360 had over PS3.

@ alexkoepp
The PS4 sells more even in the same territories that the Xbox One is sold, including North America.

rawz3570d ago

Like someone mentioned, they are getting outsold in the market X1 is already in. The sales of those markets are boosted by the ones they are still not in (for example, in Finland it's possible to get one, I believe it comes from Germany).

So no, the gap won't get smaller after X1 releases elsewhere. We might see really small boost for a couple of months in those countries (they are small markets, so it doesn't matter). After that PS4 will continue to dominate.

loulou3570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

Maria manages to find another classic.... Can you write these yourself on ibtimes ????

Hmmmm this "article" was actually wrote by a girl also. My fanboy/girl senses are tingling here.

Is maria sad enough to actuality write this stuff, then post it on herself??? I think that we all know the answer to that question.

Losso-Oso3569d ago (Edited 3569d ago )

@guyman

While I tend to agree with the sentiment, you don't need to have both in order to have a great time. I do not plan to own an XBOne anytime soon, if at all actually, but I am having an extremely great time with my PS4, WiiU and my still somewhat competent PC. Actually, The WiiU is my wife's and my PC is so outdated that it can barely run Titanfall in medium settings, but it still does the trick, anyway I think you see my point.

@alexkoepp

That argument holds no water or relevance. There is a reason why Microsoft chose to only launch in those 13 territories, and not the rest. The reason why is, those 13 territories represent close to 86.5% of their total market share. During last generation, those 13 territories accounted for 68.48 million units of the 360 of their total of 82 million sold worldwide.

That is a huge chunk my friend. And no matter how hard trolls and fanboys wish that the September release of teh XBOne in those secondary territories helps to close the gap with the PS4, the reality of the matter is that they will hardly sale in those territories anyway.

Last generation they got spanked by Sony in those territories, and that is when they had a one year head start in those markets, imagine now, when it is Sony that has the big head start, do you really think they will make any kind of significant difference?

The_Hero3569d ago

I don't know how VGchartz can continue claiming on par sales with the PS4.
When you go to retailer's best selling system, the Xbox One is quite far behind to the PS4.
NPD numbers also demolishes those numbers by more than half.

ThatOneRiggaNob3569d ago

lol with the stuff that's coming out this fall I'm going to have to disagree with you and agree with Ape007. It's a VERY good time to be a gamer even if you only have one of the 4 platforms.

The forced kinect, then the whole spying thing where leaked internal memos were looking pointing that MS was a willing participant in the illegal warrant-less spying with the NSA and you've got a horrible product launch.

Not to mention the PS4 was more powerful, cheaper, first to market, and launched in more areas.

Eonjay3570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

I mean its always a great time as long as you enjoy playing what you play. The point of social media, it definitely has an effect and so does the internet at large. I mean it has to benifit Sony that everyon knows its more powerful. Thank the Internet for that. Socially, its interesting to see sites host debates. Its like people are way more tuned in to every development.

When Sony hits a sale milestone, the first thing the do is broadcast it on Twitter. That gets rebroadcast and when people see this, some may want it just because they think it the most popular.

Magicite3570d ago

Actually X1 sells worse than X360 taking into accord X1 have never been supply constrained, while X360 was.

whybag3570d ago

We also have no idea how fast the X1 is selling. We know how fast it sold in its first month and a half at 3 million. They've been remarkably mum since that time (5mil shipped as of April), but no hard data* for units sold. Even Sony stopped reporting after 7mil sold.

*official data, not lolChartz or similar.

styferion3570d ago

because obviously,

even now my PS3 still waiting for many games, Tales of Xillia 2, Tales of Zestiria, Ar Nosurge, Natural Doctrine, KH 2.5, motherflippin Persona 5.

Obviously I would want a console that's cared by its company, not abandoned the moment new one comes out.

AceBlazer133570d ago

360 got abandoned long before XB1 came out.

Back-to-Back3570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

1. Same price as competition, but Sony has better hardware.
2. Initial reveal impression not trying to screw over the customer.
3. 3 generations of proven first party support.
4. Multi-plats consistently running better on ps4.
5. Dualshock 4 is better than the xbone controller.
6. PS Plus consistently better ever month than GWG.

I could list many more

y7jzdgy3570d ago

1. Hardware never mattered (PS2)
2. Beating a dead horse
3. It costs money to make games something Sony is in short supply of
4. Majority of multi-plats ran and looked better on the 360 so what
5. Personal opinion
6. See #5

Please do I can't wait

ape0073570d ago

both controllers are equally awesome imo

Metfanant3570d ago

@y7jzdgy

1. the PS2 didn't launch in the same month as its direct competition for $100 more with lesser hardware...

the Dreamcast hit shelves first, but Sega could not financiall support the console, the Gamecube was looked at as a "kiddie" console, and by the time the OG Xbox was released the PS2 had a stranglehold on the market...its gaming library dwarfed anything MS could have put together...

there is no direct comparison between this generation and any other...never before have the two main competetors launched within such a short time span, where the console with the better hardware was $100 cheaper!

2. point? its a fact, the initial reveals couldnt have been more drastically different

3. Yet Sony has, is, and will continue to pump out more AAA first party titles than MS...why is that?

4. And the 360 sold accordingly for most of the generation...However..in the case of last generation it became more and more clear over the course of the lifecycle that the PS3 probably did have the more powerful hardware (Uncharted series, TLoU, games like GTA5 running better on the PS3 at the end)...

this simply CANT be the case on the Xbone because it just doesnt have the hardware to keep up...its not drastically different to code for like the Cell processor was...

In addition it was Sony's first party studios releasing great games that started to turn the tide...MS does not have the stable of first party studios that Sony does...

5 and 6 are both personal opinion...

Why o why3570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

Careful my bretherin, that y7jz chap is the type that will pm you whining about fanboys and spouting off then will block you when you shut him down. 'B'type basically. . Do not engage.

In regards to this article. Everybody else has pretty much nailed it. Price. Power. Perception. Past behaviour. These advantages have been made more potent by ms's missteps, numerous 180s and many gamers wising up to ms's minimalistic approach adopted in the final 3rd last gen. It'll be a tough slog for ms but they've made some fruitful steps to right the wrongs. Unfortunately, some things, like the hardware, cannot be changed

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 3570d ago
dirkdady3570d ago

Xbox one sales have dipped lower than any month during the Xbox 360's lifetime... So don't think it's selling at a faster rate than 360 at all.

masterfox3570d ago

"X1 is an amazing system",
^^^
I would really wish to know why is that? at best is just an average a not worth system with that price tag, it should cost at max 300 to compensate the bad hardware design.

ape0073570d ago

because titanfall imo is the best game on any nextgen system so far, super addicting

rainslacker3569d ago

It's a capable system, and it doesn't suck the way some people may make it out to. It does have some good games on it.

My opinion is that any system, no matter the specs or design, can be amazing, so long as it has great games to play on it that utilize it's capabilities.

Pricing I can't speak to. I'm sure the system cost more than $300 to manufacture...although can't speak to where things stand since the removal of Kinect.

jcole973570d ago

Its sad that people disagreed with that...

wsoutlaw873570d ago

the biggest reasons are going to be price, all the articles about ps4 playing multiplats at 2x the resolution, and last gen. I think Sony did a good job at the end of last gen with the exclusives like TLOU when ms didnt really have much big exclusives the last few years. Then with the things like free plus games, no drm, and a games first message, xbox gamers took notice and changed over. Plus im sure RROD is slowing down a lot of people who were thinking of getting one soon after launch. When families have to seen back 3 xboxs they arent going to trust xbox again.

Zero-One3570d ago

What ever the case, Sony is definitely doing SOMETHING right with Playstation 4 for it to be this popular.

kenshiro1003570d ago

alex, stop with that lame excuse, it's getting old.
Sony was better prepared in the end, that's why.

zero_gamer3570d ago

PS4 is the mainstream console of choice this generation and that will be really difficult to change. All the efforts MS could do to improve the Xbox One won't be enough to outsize the PS4's market share. Same goes for Nintendo with the Wii U.

This of course isn't a discussion of which console is better opinion-wise.

assdan3570d ago

It's because the ps4 is simply the better console of the two. For 6 months the ps4 was stronger and cheaper. Now it's stronger and the same price. So still a better value. Once the xbox one is cheaper than the ps4, and xbl provides more value, I'll say it's a fair game.

jessupj3570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

I think ms severely underestimated the power of social media this gen.

They thought they could get away with releasing their console with the original DRM and that enough people wouldn't know about it until it was too late.

Social media saw that strategy fall flat on it's face as the xbone rapidly became the laughing stock of the internet after the initial reveal and then again right after e3 2013 you couldn't go to anywhere on the web where there wasn't someone yelling abuse at ms for being so anti-consumer.

Even non gamers knew about the xbone PR blunders.

Thanks to the power of the internet MS's greedy plans were foiled.

Azzanation3570d ago

Yeah its sad, people buy what's hot and not what's good. (Not saying PS4 isn't good) but honestly XB1 is as good as a PS4 but people treat it like there's only one console to buy this gen when both have great benefits.

Also PS4 is available in more then 3x the countries then the X1 so the sales figures should be a lot closer then it seems.

Brettman20083570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

Xbox One has been released in the major markets, releasing in the remaining markets will get only a small sales bump.

rainslacker3569d ago

On paper, the X1 isn't "as good" spec wise as the PS4. There is a power discrepancy which is already apparent off paper as well.

Being that they're either the same price, or the X1 being more expensive(w/ Kinect), it means that the value for an X1 is actually less because of that. That leaves people buying the system either Xbox fans, or people that just see games that they want to play on it.

Sony has those same people, along with the people that know it's a better system spec wise with the hope of future great games to play. I also have a feeling that Sony's social connectivity with the PS Camera helped as well. That was a feature that turned out to be pretty popular.

On top of that, next gen systems aren't terribly more expensive than prior gen consoles. Less than $150 in most cases. The jump to next gen may seem like a better value for people looking for a console in general, which is why both consoles are selling much higher than prior gens.

Both have great benefits, I will agree there. But PS4 is hot because Sony is doing everything right with a good variety of games, whereas MS floundered early, so the games they are offering kind of took a back seat. It's very apparent that the general perception of the X1 isn't that high around the net, which in turn makes people looking into a new system shy away from it, and more likely to adopt the more popular brand...thus making the PS4 hot.

Azzanation3569d ago

@Brettman2008

You might not think its much but PS4 has probably 1 million extra sales in those 60+ more countries its available in over the course of the year. If you add 1 million to the XB1 that puts them to 6m compared to 9m. That's not a generation difference.

slasaru013570d ago

People just pretend they don't understand that if Toyota sells more cars, that doesn't make it better than Bentley which sells drastically less. Using such logic, Bentley should be closed and all.

Wii U: It's Wii....for U.
Gamers: ?????

PS4: It's Playstation 4; the new Playstation.

ArchangelMike3570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

It's a more powerful console at a cheaper price.

Applejack3570d ago (Edited 3570d ago )

Don't forget about the Kinectless Xbox One for $399 but let's be honest, it's a really bad deal compared to the other bundles out there.

Edit: Just to clarify, I mean there are better xbox bundles with free games for about $440-450 with a Kinect. Much better when you compare the xbox bundles only.

rdgneoz33570d ago

When Titanfall came out they had $450 bundles going around. And yah, when the kinect standalone releases it'll be like $150 to $200, seeing as the kinect for windows v2 is selling for $200. Though you'll be able to find cheaper on ebay or such.

Anon19743570d ago

It's more than that though. Consider the PS3, which was the subject of many "Sony's doomed, Blu-Ray's doomed, Playstation is doomed" articles back in the day. Despite the gap in price between the Xbox 360 and the PS3, the PS3 handily outsold the Xbox 360 from the word go (while the Wii ran away with the sales crown).

If it were just price we would have seen the XBox 360 handily take second place instead of seeing their nearly 9 million lead over the PS3 slowly evaporate before the PS3 ultimately overtook them.

While price and power are certainly a factor, there's more to it than that in the grand scheme of things.

Hammerwatch II Will Stop Dilly-Dallying and Head to Xbox and PS4 on April 23

"Hammerwatch II's journey to Xbox has been long and perilous. After first launching on Steam in the fall of 2023, the game finally turned up on PlayStation 5 last December. Since then, Xbox gamers who enjoyed the original Hammerwatch and the sublime Heroes of Hammerwatch have been anxiously awaiting their turn at the long-promised sequel. At last, the wait is nearly over because Hammerwatch II will hit Xbox and PlayStation 4 on April 23," says Co-Optimus.
