Why Does Sony Keep Outselling Microsoft?

I think the current numbers reflect MS's bungled 2013, the weaker later years of the 360, and for some people, lingering RRoD memories. I know more than one person who swore they'd never buy another MS console before XB1 was even revealed.

Going with weaker hardware for the sake of including Kinect didn't help, and making Kinect optional doesn't change that hardware.

Meanwhile, Sony released a console designed to be good for developers with more power at a cheaper price, improved an already great controller, and they managed to at least seem more gamer and developer friendly while doing it.

Both have good games, but Sony's image worldwide is something MS can't compete with.

You know, Guyman, I'm getting tired of people preaching console agnosticism. Reality check, the PS4 is outselling its nearest competitor for a number of reasons; none of which are particularly earth-shattering to an observant individual.

- Despite the doomsayers on N4G, or concern trolls, the PS4 actually has more games overall, over twice as many out and in development, as the X1. Check any list you choose. Among those are F2P titles, that have no PS+ requirement or cost of entry.
- Exclusives are sparse on BOTH systems, AND Sony has 2015 on lockdown with Bloodborne and the Order. Let's not forget No Man's Sky, either (probably late 2015). All the hype for late-Winter,/ early next year is riding with them.
- Multiplats, which make up 90% or more of console software purchases play BETTER on the PS4. In the age of social media, this fact has spread far and wide to the lowliest of console peasants.
- With both machines at $399, the PS4 still offers a better value for the library, performance and simple consumer preference. It won the early mindshare, and its not going to lose it anytime soon.
- We now have MS REMOVING features--Kinect, questionable dev-kit support--simply to achieve price parity, yet not product or performance parity.
- MS's messaging has been horrific and confusing from the start and its barely gotten any better. Not a single head seems to know what the other is doing.
- On the contrary, Sony's messaging has been on point from the start and they've hardly missed a beat or opportunity. All of their execs also share the same script and vision. If they aren't confused, its easier for consumers to have faith in the product.

There is no need for both consoles when one just has more options, games and appeal. The end. But let's keep creating mythic goalposts of "exclusives" and "out in more countries" and "wait for NPD". Or let's suddenly make the unrealistic demand that in order to be a "real gamer" you need to spend another thousand dollars or so on a poorly-conceived machine just to keep this gluttonously cash-gorged industry afloat. Sometimes, products and visions need to fail. If MS stays for another console cycle, you can be sure that they will try harder to appease--and not ignore--consumer voices. In the meantime, if you want an X1 for the dribble of exclusives each year, that's fine, but its not a reasonable argument to propose to Joe gamer just looking to play FIFA with his mates.

Better hardware, first party games, better looking/performing third party games, indie support, games first approach, DS4, VR leader for consoles, cloud gaming leader for consoles, f2p support, PS plus setting the standard, better console design(my opinion), playroom, unchanged laser focused vision unlike MS or Playstation long history of great hardware and software support. Pick one.

It keeps outselling because,

1. Up until June it was the cheaper system
2. The hardware is technically superior for the same price now (before June it was $100 cheaper)
3. Sony has always done better than Microsoft globally but the XB1 hasn't been released in as many markets yet.
4. Better vision from the start, Microsoft spent a long time trying to fix the image of the XB1.
5. The PS4 still gets more game content, mainly from having more Japanese support and better relations so far with indie developers.
6. This is a big one, they have the momentum and it's hard to stop that unless the XB1 starts to either get unique features or software that isn't available on the PS4.

I recently just bought a 360 though with a slew of exclusives and I must say I'm having a lot of fun with it. MS got many things right, and some even better than the PS3. But in the end Sony offers a lot more value in their consoles, they always have.

The reason ps4 is selling better is because sony has been giving mixed messages. They are laser focused while MS is still in recovery mode. Also ps4 is the better consoles tech wise.

If the Xbox 360, with its insane marketing, 1 year head start, more initial developer support and easier to develop for architecture couldn't outsell the PS3 by being $1-200 cheaper. What makes people think the PS4 was gonna be outsold this time around when it doesn't suffer from many of the limitations the PS3 had.
Xbox One has none of the advantages the 360 had over PS3.

Like someone mentioned, they are getting outsold in the market X1 is already in. The sales of those markets are boosted by the ones they are still not in (for example, in Finland it's possible to get one, I believe it comes from Germany).

So no, the gap won't get smaller after X1 releases elsewhere. We might see really small boost for a couple of months in those countries (they are small markets, so it doesn't matter). After that PS4 will continue to dominate.

While I tend to agree with the sentiment, you don't need to have both in order to have a great time. I do not plan to own an XBOne anytime soon, if at all actually, but I am having an extremely great time with my PS4, WiiU and my still somewhat competent PC. Actually, The WiiU is my wife's and my PC is so outdated that it can barely run Titanfall in medium settings, but it still does the trick, anyway I think you see my point.

That argument holds no water or relevance. There is a reason why Microsoft chose to only launch in those 13 territories, and not the rest. The reason why is, those 13 territories represent close to 86.5% of their total market share. During last generation, those 13 territories accounted for 68.48 million units of the 360 of their total of 82 million sold worldwide.

That is a huge chunk my friend. And no matter how hard trolls and fanboys wish that the September release of teh XBOne in those secondary territories helps to close the gap with the PS4, the reality of the matter is that they will hardly sale in those territories anyway.

Last generation they got spanked by Sony in those territories, and that is when they had a one year head start in those markets, imagine now, when it is Sony that has the big head start, do you really think they will make any kind of significant difference?

the biggest reasons are going to be price, all the articles about ps4 playing multiplats at 2x the resolution, and last gen. I think Sony did a good job at the end of last gen with the exclusives like TLOU when ms didnt really have much big exclusives the last few years. Then with the things like free plus games, no drm, and a games first message, xbox gamers took notice and changed over. Plus im sure RROD is slowing down a lot of people who were thinking of getting one soon after launch. When families have to seen back 3 xboxs they arent going to trust xbox again.

I think ms severely underestimated the power of social media this gen.

They thought they could get away with releasing their console with the original DRM and that enough people wouldn't know about it until it was too late.

Social media saw that strategy fall flat on it's face as the xbone rapidly became the laughing stock of the internet after the initial reveal and then again right after e3 2013 you couldn't go to anywhere on the web where there wasn't someone yelling abuse at ms for being so anti-consumer.

Even non gamers knew about the xbone PR blunders.

On paper, the X1 isn't "as good" spec wise as the PS4. There is a power discrepancy which is already apparent off paper as well.

Being that they're either the same price, or the X1 being more expensive(w/ Kinect), it means that the value for an X1 is actually less because of that. That leaves people buying the system either Xbox fans, or people that just see games that they want to play on it.

Sony has those same people, along with the people that know it's a better system spec wise with the hope of future great games to play. I also have a feeling that Sony's social connectivity with the PS Camera helped as well. That was a feature that turned out to be pretty popular.

On top of that, next gen systems aren't terribly more expensive than prior gen consoles. Less than $150 in most cases. The jump to next gen may seem like a better value for people looking for a console in general, which is why both consoles are selling much higher than prior gens.

Both have great benefits, I will agree there. But PS4 is hot because Sony is doing everything right with a good variety of games, whereas MS floundered early, so the games they are offering kind of took a back seat. It's very apparent that the general perception of the X1 isn't that high around the net, which in turn makes people looking into a new system shy away from it, and more likely to adopt the more popular brand...thus making the PS4 hot.

It's more than that though. Consider the PS3, which was the subject of many "Sony's doomed, Blu-Ray's doomed, Playstation is doomed" articles back in the day. Despite the gap in price between the Xbox 360 and the PS3, the PS3 handily outsold the Xbox 360 from the word go (while the Wii ran away with the sales crown).

If it were just price we would have seen the XBox 360 handily take second place instead of seeing their nearly 9 million lead over the PS3 slowly evaporate before the PS3 ultimately overtook them.

While price and power are certainly a factor, there's more to it than that in the grand scheme of things.

Yep, PS4 has and will have exclusive content from the latest, most highly anticipated multiplats, that coupled with those games running better on PS4 is a huge factor for why PS4 is outselling XBox One by such a large degree and will likely continue to do so for the generation.

The disparity in sales has hardly anything to do with PS4 being out in more markets, if it had any real weight to the situation, then Xbox One would be regularly beating PS4 in the markets that both consoles are available in.

Hell the markets Xbox One is yet to launch in aren't traditionally great sellers for Xbox, so it's doubtful they would have a massive effect on the situation when the console does launch there.

Cost could be part of the issue, though it had no real effect on PS3 sales compared to the 360.

Sony has also always had an image that appeals to more gamers compared to Microsoft.

With the likes of The Order 1886 , Bloodborne, Ratchet & Clank coming in early 2015, having The Last of Us & Little Big Planet 3, not to forget such a hugely anticipated racer like Driveclub there's a lot for people to sink their teeth into before Uncharted gets released.

Talking about Uncharted the last 2 games were released within less than a year of when they were announced, so the same could easily happen with Uncharted 4.

I'm going to respond to you with the same type of comments I saw a lot of last gen in regards to systems updates when it was the PS3 that was receiving updates on a regular basis:

It just goes to show you how unstable that system is that they have to keep updating it every month, otherwise it crashes and burns.

That is what fanboys used to say about teh firmware updates on the PS3, when they were coming on a regular basis, not unlike the way they are coming to the XBOne. But since the shoe is on the other foot now, all of a sudden it is a sign of commitment and support for that console.

Your games comment is purely subjective, for me Microsoft did not even come close to the quality and replayability of games like Uncharted 2, KZ 2 and 3, MLB the Show, LBP 1 and 2, Hell I got more replay value out of God of War 3 than Gears of War 3, and God of war didn't even have an online multiplayer component.

Not saying that Gears 3 was a bad game, I enjoyed it a lot, but I preferred God of war and all the different challenge modes.

The question is more like, why aren't people buying an Xbox One? It's not like you can only have one console. I know plenty of people who can afford both an Xbox One and a PS4, but simply despise the Xbox One. For what reason? My guess is because, Microsoft has made themselves look like the bad guy last year. Now I find it nearly impossible for Microsoft to catch up with Sony. I chose to buy one because I like to play games, it was that simple. Exactly the same reason I went out and paid my hard earned cash on a PS4 and just 3 weeks ago a WiiU with MK8 (Awesome!!!).

Speaking personally, it goes back to before the xb1 was even announced.

I always felt that MS gave up on gamers for the last 3 years of the xb360 producing a few tired exclusive titles and garbage kinect games. Once they announced the xb1 it seemed like they were continuing down that route with the focus so firmly on kinect and tv.

This was a huge turn off for me, even before all the PR disasters and 180s and it has left a bad taste in my mouth. I now feel like they are saying what ever it takes to lure people like me back but its too late, I have no interest in upgrading my rather dusty 360.

Its a shame as there are a few exclusives that I like the look of, mainly Dead Rising 3 from the current crop (loved that series on my xb360) and the machine itself looks quite cool too.

My final personal reason is that I am 39 now and have a long, long relationship with Playstation and so do feel more loyalty to that brand as they have always delivered for me when I think back to all the amazing games I have played on Sony system. Brand loyalty should never be under estimated in my opinion.

I didn't buy my PS4 to play games that come out in a years time. I bought my PS4 to play games now.

So far this year I have played the likes of Battlefield 4, Assassin's Creed 4, FIFA, Infamous, Metal Gear Solid, Killzone, Need For Speed, Sniper Elite, Outlast and many more.

Sure most of them I just mentioned are multiplatform. But most of if not all look and/or play better on the PS4 than XB1. Sure some of them are minor differences but there is a difference.

Xbone will release in the 29 countries soon and it won't change a thing. Xbone could have released in more markets. M$ just decided to release in the stronger markets, because they thought they could get the jump on Sony. Only thing is Sony is dominating in the markets that M$ dominated in last gen. Honestly, I am not longer certain myself. From my perspective, as having been so anti-Xbox One (in terms of what it was offering and the price point at launch) NOW after all the changes and the price-reduction/Kinect removal, the X1 is MORE appealing than ever.

Though I remain mostly uninterested in it and have a quite low opinion of Microsoft's business practices and track record.

I am somewhat surprised it isn't doing better. Public perception too negative perhaps. But ultimately, some big flashy games should sell ANY console, especially when the price ain't too shabby any more.

Sony doesn't release NPD numbers, NPD is its own entity and they do their own tracking of sales. They then report on those findings, by the way they only report the numbers for the USA.

The PS4 will continue to out sell X1, just like PS3 caught up with 360 and passed it, this time Sony doesn't have catching up to do, Microsoft does. Regardless the X1 reveal was a PR and social media disaster for MS. The higher price, the DRM and online restrictions, MS executives smugness at E3 2013 when gamers were trying to voice their discontent. There are potentially a whole host of reasons. Maybe it's the price point of the PS4. Maybe it's the power, though historically the most powerful console has never sold the most units. Maybe the XBOX One's early DRM fiasco did this. Could be the region availability,launch titles, games announced, PlayStation Plus, etc.

A big, oft-unmentioned reason could be that gamers from the old days see the PS4 as the true successor to the PS1/PS2 era. Sony has made deliberate strides to suggest this console is for the gamers in a way the PS1 and PS2 were. NOT saying the PS3 wasn't (it was a great console--personal favorite of last generation), but I found the PS3 lacking if and only if compared to its predecessors.

Either way, let's not get ahead of ourselves yet. Sure, PlayStation 4 has the lead now and it *could* stay that way, but always remember that a console can completely turn around. PS3 was touted as a "supercomputer" by Kutaragi, lacked multitasking, had a very slow blu-ray drive, the network was pitiable in the beginning, it suffered a games drought, it was expensive, had worse multiplatform ports, the asymmetrical architecture caused problems for developers, financially AND developmentally. Despite all of that, it became the global leader in sales for HD consoles last generation. It was beaten pretty badly in North America, but overall, it ended up outselling the XBOX 360.

Still very much anyone's game.

It has to be remembered that the Xbox One is actually selling decently considering that it was released in fewer countries than the PS4. And it's the first Xbox console to be doing well in Japan.

So before I say why Sony's selling more, I'll say why the Xbox One is doing relatively well in the eye of all the negativity.

It's doing relatively well because it's physically very well made, extremely more so than past Xboxes. It's quieter than the PS4, it's solid, you get a far better headset with the Xbox One than with the PS4, although the Xbox One controller does have its critics for requiring batteries it is massively comfortable to hold. And it would give me some pleasure to have the understated Xbox One in my house as opposed to the slanted, cod-modernism of the PS4. Some people have really gone overboard in how 'good' the design of the PS4 is - it's like they're doing art class at junior school - part of them is thinking 'ooh those looks all science fiction'. They have cliched minds about 'the future' looks like and Sony has taken advantage of that.

Plus Xbox One has some decent-looking exclusives lined up in Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, perhaps D4.
OK, perhaps Sony will have the edge on story-based games in general as they always do. But the Xbox One line up is not bad.

So now why is the PS4 selling more than the Xbox One? Well it's obvious..

The original Kinect was essentially Microsoft's answer to why they didn't have more exclusive AAA games in the last few years of the Xbox360. Sony were knocking out Uncharted 2, 3 , The Last of Us, Journey, Papo and Yo, The Unfinished Swan.

Sony and Microsoft gamers noticing that online play was free on the PS3.

Design choices like the battery-less PS3 controller.

The technical edge of the PS4 over the XboxOne. It matters to some extent when 2 companies are now both long standing in gaming.

The 'story' of Microsoft forcing the Kinect on people and trying to introduce policies that not everyone agreed with.

But mostly it is what Microsoft didn't do and Sony did do. Something as simple as the share button and the touch pad on the PS4 taps in to that 'Wii-fun' kind of party gaming market even if used in more hardcore games. And the openness and humour of Sony's execs.

Things have changed now. Phil Spencer is in charge and he says all the right things including praising Sony and Nintendo.

The Xbox One is unlikely to sell as much as the PS4. The Xbox never has. But it will sell many, many millions by the end of the generation, perhaps somewhere between the original Xbox and the Xbox360 but perhaps far closer to what the Xbox360 sold than what the Xbox sold. When you've got Sony as an opponent, that's the best that you can hope for.

Sony has really nailed their marketing and adjusted it based on gamer's feelings and Microsoft's actions...

They took advantage of gamer's feelings about DRM and always online. Then, they successfully re-marketed existing Indie's into consoles. Then, they took advantage of the game resolution differences in multi-platform games.

They have been riding those key points so far this generation. It will be interesting to see where they go next as MS seems to have adjusted much like the PS3 did last generation and now we are in a period where both companies are striving to make core gamers happy.

I'd put a lot of it down to the dreadful X1 Reveal, Microsoft were far too arrogant, just how Sony were with the PS3 launch. Gamers don't like restrictions and thats what M$ was offering, whereas Sony seemed humble in contrast.

Once the gaming media had both machines it was obviously apparent which was better, PS4 offered Developer friendly interface (something the PS3 was lacking), the ability to self-publish so the Indies ofc jumped on board.

Plus the fact it was a much more affordable yet with more power, it's an obvious choice for gamers. Microsoft has some fantastic franchises tho, and the reversing of a lot of the original policies seems to be helping along with the price cut.

I personally own all three major machines along with a pretty beefy PC, for the sheer fact that I'd hate to miss out on titles such as Halo, Mario Kart, Uncharted and Starcraft etc

As best as I can tell the initial massive sales of the X1 were mainly hardcore Xbox fans, people planning on getting both (but ps4 was too hard to find so they got the X1 first). MS drops support very early. Their business model has always been to keep you on the upgrade treadmill. People notice that.
Sony supports their platforms for more years. Recently there was a new game for PS2. PS3 will still get games for a long time. XB360 support went off a cliff even before the XBone was released.

Because, aside from some VERY vocal early adopters who keep defending the Xbox, most gamers can see (in multiple comparisons, on multiple games) which console is more powerful. They can consult a number of lists and see which console has DOUBLE the number of games available. They hear, almost daily, that MS has the inferior hardware.

Add to that the HORRIBLE PR that MS had last year, the HORRIBLE communication issues that persist to this day with developers, the unfriendly "parity" clauses that restrict devs, and the broken promises of making every Xbox retail unit a developer console...and you end up with fewer games on the system.

Less power = fewer sales
PR nightmares = fewer sales
Less games = fewer sales
More exclusive content on the PS4 = fewer sales
Bad blood because of RROD last gen = fewer sales

MS has a mighty hole to dig out of, and I don't think they are going to do it with the Xbox One. They MIGHT be able to recover enough to continue and "fix" things with the Xbox 2 (whenever THAT comes out), but this gen is already decided.

I bought my Xbox one a few months ago and I bought it for Titanfall. Oops. I played that game constantly for about a week and was so tired of the same dam thing overa nd over again with no real story that i traded it in before its resale value took a nose dive like a used virtua boy back in the day. Now I have whatever is free on Gold, two games, and Forza, which is still fun. I have 25 games for my Wii U and there are others I still havent played. I really hope that Master Chief Collection, Evolve, and Halo 5 are good because right now I am extremely upset and wishing I got the PS4 instead. They were sold out at the time so I settled because of how pretty Forza was. Thank god Nintendo has good games for Wii U or I would be playing candy crush or some crap on my phone until next year.
