Do you actually hear yourself? Out of the three console makers Microsoft has the most money to survive and saying the moment they aren't popular they will abandon the gaming market is one of the most ignorant things I've ever heard.

It's like saying the moment a version of Windows isn't globally loved they will drop out of the OS market. Come on now, they are in it for the long haul, they have done a great job at capturing the North American market and they aren't in it just as a fad.

If you look at the history of consoles, I don't believe a North American company has ever really been in the race, it's always been Japanese companies, I think Microsoft understands the American gamer quite a bit and as long as they do a good job reaching North America, the console wars will always be close.

The fisrt Xbox sold horrible and the PS2 killed it in sales - MS could have done what Sega did with the Dream Cast and bail out but they took a chance this gen and it paid off.

You're right and you only have to look at how the 3 companies got into gaming to see that

Nintendo got into gaming because of the passion

Sony got into gaming through passion and revenge. Ken kuturagi always wanted to make a games console but it was only through Sony wanting revenge on Nintendo that he was allowed his chance

Microsoft got into gaming because of the money. They'll go wherever they sniff money, even when it means dropping their core audience for casuals, skimping on quality to build a reliable console, charging users to play online, and then even putting adverts up for their paying users. And if they see no future in making money in it, they'll leave

As much as I dislike the wii and wiiU, I still respect Nintendo for what thay have done for console gaming.
I respect Sega cause they were pretty awesome back then, especially with the dreamcast! and even though they got out of the console market, they have no resentment for they're competitors(Nintendo & Sony)which is why they're still making good games for them.
I'm not a big fan of microsoft, but I still respect them for pushing Sony and giving them some serious competition! which personally, I think made Sony a better gaming company.

It cant be Sega as Sega was there before sony. so sony only saw them "go". It can't be nintendo as they were there before Sony and they are still there. It can't be MS as they saw MS "come" but they are still there.

So what competitors are they really referring to as "come and go". To imply that would mean there had to be a company come into the market AND exit the market while Sony has been there.

in all honesty, only nintendo can really make that claim. They were in the market to see Sega try and take share with the Master system but it failed. They saw Sega take share with the genesis. They saw Sega transition into software only. Nintendo saw the rise and fall of 3DO, NeoGeo, NEC (turbografx), Atari (they tried to make a comeback after the "crash" but have since pulled out).

So what was Sony really talking about???

Microsoft, gaming isn't their biggest business sector.

Which of the 3 companies would be more willing to give up on gaming? In business terms gaming is far more important to Sony and Nintendo then it is to Microsoft. And like I said before, Sony and Nintendo got into the industry for the love of it.

What you just said is vice versa. But lets completely ignore the fact that Sony completely botched the PlayStation 3 launched and took a serious, serious loss from it, thanks to the price. Sony financial standings dropped hard. Or the fact that Sony didn't have a worthwhile exclusives for the first 2 years after launch.

Guess what Sony might make the PS4 a little more expensive then what people are thinking. Sony wants it to be less damaging as possible this time around. Unlike Sony MS can take a loss from the next box. So don't be surprised if the price is kind of steep.

This isn't the 90's or early 00's anymore Sony has a lot more to worry about.

You mentioned the Wii U. Nintendo is currently struggling with the Wii U. And thanks to the PS4 announcement they'll get overshadowed even more. Which means Nintendo will have to further justify their console of choice. The media is looking at MS now, not "How can Nintendo counter."

Bubble up. I'm more of a Playstation supporter, but competition is good. If it wasn't for Microsoft this last gen Sony probably wouldn't have pushed for first party exclusives as much as we did. Games like Infamous, Uncharted, etc, may have never come to fruition.

I'm not against owning both consoles, so I'd like Microsoft to atleast do good this next generation so both companies push out quality content by trying to one up each other.

OT, I like it how when these kind of articles come out, it is always Sony love for the fans and Microsoft is greedy and abandoned the core gamers. There is no way of God's green earth that Microsoft will fade away in the billion dollar gaming industry that they worked so hard in the last decade to position themselves to where they are now, neck and neck with the competition. Remember guys, why do you think Sony is copying the Live network and adding social media, why do you think Sony is adding the Move, and why do you think Sony just revealed the new PSeye camera 2.0 that look like another Kinect? It is where the trend is heading for gaming console, that is where the money is going to be made.

Also, unlike Nintendo, Microsoft gets all the core games from third party support like COD, GTA, and Mass Effect so what does it matter if Sony gets a few extra exclusive games per year if 2/3 of them have no interest for the majority of the gaming population. Even if you are die hard PS fanboys, how many of you, with a straight face, actually admit that you bought LBP Kart, Sony All Star Malee, Starhawk, or Twisted Metal last year? While a popular core game like Halo 4 is bought and is enjoyed by millions of xbox players and fully enjoying it over xbox live.

Last point is lets wait till E3 and see where each company is heading before making such outrages and no-logical assessment that Microsoft is leaving the cake all to Sony. Remember guys, Microsoft has deep pocket to survive as long as it takes but I can't say that about Sony, because if the PS4 fail, then Sony might be finished, not just in gaming but as a whole, the entire company.

I have to agree with the consensus that Microsoft is a "necessary evil" in the console world. Although I'm sure they really are only after the $, but what company isn't. Sony, Nintendo, etc. are all businesses too. But I think we have to give credit to Microsoft because they did help knock some sense into Sony. Who knows, if the PS3 ruled the roost, they might have not had the push to deliver the games or features we wanted this past generation.

And of course now that led up to this new generation on the PS4, they are taking things completely in a new direction. They are humbled, more aggressive, and of course "mindful of their competitors."

Competition drives growth and innovation and the PS4 is a fine example of that.

Right now a company that needs some sense knocked into them is Nvidia. They come out with $999 graphics card and thump their chests. Call me crazy, but I'm rooting for AMD to come out with something so amazing at a cheaper price point, to shut Nvidia up and their stupid overpriced GTX titan.

Microsoft is not interested in gaming, they are just interested in getting a media hub into people's homes. The XBOX served as a trojan horse to enter living room and now it is showing its true colors. MS is abandoning gaming as it is evident from the lack of games on XBOX for the past three years and their plans for Durango. They are moving towards casual gaming and media functionality instead of hardcore games and new IPs. On the other hand gaming is the bread and butter for Sony and Nintendo especially Nintendo so they are much more dedicated to it than MS.

Read my comment directly above you, BNN and many other investment analysts are telling investors to steer clear of Sony because their stock plummeted so hard just a couple months ago. Sony was bleeding money profusely, only just recently have they managed to post an operating profit. Sony is very unstable right now and it doesn't even take a business analyst to tell you that.

all i can tell you is if ms doesnt come up with alot of excluive ips and focus on gamers this next gen war may be over before it begins. so far i have seen great stuff with ps4 and it just keep getting better ms is gonna have to pull some really really big guns to keep up and i just dont see ms doing that. and the comment about sony changing the ram to match the leaked ms specs. the ms specs were most likely fake do to ubi soft making there comment on ps4's ram they said it was better for them to have less ram that is faster than having more ram that is slow. even though this was never confirmed that they were talking about nextbox but what system has alot of ram none that is currently on the market. so if this comment is true then sony didnt change it to match that leaked specs of nextbox and one reason i think it is because it would have probley taken longer to change it then the time there was by then to the ps4 event.

I kinda of agree and disagree at the same time. The Xbox division counts for very little of Microsofts revenue and while it does make money, it takes along time to make substantial profit. While I do believe MS is in it for the longhaul I believe that the Xbox is MSs Trojan horse into the living room and may not always focus on videogames but rather multimedia. Now Microsoft has a lot of cash but MS is under pressure and when Google and MS go to buisness war between there OS's (inevitable) and if Google gets the upperhand Microsoft might drop slow cookers like the Xbox division.
All of this is just my speculation but to outline this essay Microsoft gaming division costs a lot to run and takes a long time to turn a profit so if Microsoft faces stiff competition they may drop the Xbox division.I hope this doesn't happen as competition is good.
The same could happen to any company.

I'll get a PS4 for sure, but I'm interested in the Next Box as well as long as it has games. But if the failure rate is as high as the 360, I'm waiting on purchasing one until the second revision.

Sony has actually had TWO generations of consoles AT LAUNCH that had design issues...and almost the same very issues dealing with the drives. Sony is a ELECTRONICS MANUFACTURER first and foremost and the PS1 launched with a plastic CD tray that would WARP and thus not play your disks. The Plastic CD try was placed too close to the chipset so when heat dissipation happened it warped the drive. Then you have DRE for the PS2 at launch.
Two generations...Two launches...Two hardware design flaws...Yet people continue to bash MS (rightly so anyways for Microsoft putting out a flawed console at launch) and gave Sony a pass for similar issues TWO GENERATIONS IN A ROW. Now the fail rate was not as high, however Sony STILL released flawed systems at launch.

So with your logic above you would not have bought a PS3 day one then OR a PS2...

Comparing any console design flaw to RROD is silly IMO.

No console has reached that high of a failure rate before. Honestly I was unaware(and I'm sure I wasn't the only one) of the PS2 and PS1 hardware failures until people started bringing it up on N4G as to defend RROD/say "Sony did it too" or for whatever reason they decided to bring it up.

In the end when it comes down to technology in general you always have a chance of getting a defected product. It's just that the 360's failure rate was unnaturally high. So it really is no surprise that gamers are going to be more cautious/worried about buying the next Xbox at launch then any other console before. People who buy consoles day one are test subjects anyway which is why I personally never buy at launch regardless.

Don't see how you owned anyone, considering that the PS1 was Sony's first console and the PS2 was their second console.

The 360's issues were much deeper than the PS1/PS2 days.

This is what i like to hear from Sony, to acknowledge the competition. Something they didn't do during the start of this gen when Ken Kutaragi was in charge.

To Ken there was no competition & that Sony was the platform to own. That over self confidence left a lot of gamers upset that made them switch over to Microsoft. The early attitudes of Sony really hurt the companies reputation & it has taken a long time to gain some of that back.

It is good to see that new Sony has learned their lessons in humility, fully aware of the industry around them & that they are not the only players. It is ok to have some confidence in the hardware they have built & be proud of it but staying humble will gather Sony more respect around the industry.

Say what you want about SONY, but there's no debating the fact that they push the envelope and innovate.

From the Walkman, to Betamx to Playstation, to great TVs and Blu-Ray. SONY takes chances and when they succeed, we succeed.

This gen will be great. 720 and PS4 are both going to be lots of fun. We just have to hope that we will have a chance to game online for free.

Last gen based on MS and Sony's pre-launch showings and rumours I decided to get a 360 (then later got a PS3 after a price reduction).

This gen, based on what I've seen and heard, it's PS4 all the way.

Whatever Sony says they did lose this generation and that is a fact. 360 sells a lot more copy's of games, sold like 2 mil more 360's then ps3's, and live brings in a whole bunch of money. (I have all the consoles so I'm not a 360 fanboy I just prefer it over ps3) All this generation will be is same specs, and feed off what made the others console better. And please stop saying that the 720 will be weaker cause of rumours, the ps4 rumours made it sound like nothing special before until they actually announced it.

Sony's taking away a few of MS's last gen advantages such as 1 year head start, harder to develop for system, launch price, etc so it'll be interesting to see what MS brings next-gen.

Never underestimate your competition, MS has deep pockets and really need/want their box to do well to keep up the fight vs Apple/Google/Sony. This is more than just about a games console for them, it's basically do or die and I can guarantee they will come out swinging.

i see a lot of people saying nintendo and sony are in it more for passion and microsoft is in it more for greed.. and then there are a bunch of other people who are saying thats bullshit because theyre all companies so theyre all in it for greed, which is true..

but you guys have to understand that microsoft goes about it COMPLETELY different than sony and nintendo. sony and nintendo want money, but they go about it by giving you games. software sells hardware, and their approach is to make exclusive software to entice you to game on their system. microsoft wants money, but they go about it by enticing developers into making things timed exclusive on 360. and you HAVE to admit that every time you turn on your 360, you are bombarded by SPAM. the old 360 dashboard was the shit. this new one sucks ass. sony never turned their dashboard into a spamfest. if you want ads on your ps3, you go to the ps store where ADS ARE EXPECTED. and with the wii u, the dashboard is all about gaming. gaming communities.

so these are just a few differences you can see in how microsoft does things compared to their competitors.

You could say the same about Sony and UMD (remember UMD movies and UMD music, and how we were going to get dedicated portable and home UMD players?), or Memory Stick (their phones and cameras now support SD since they couldn't compete on price) or Betamax (died off as a consumer format in favour of VHS).

All companies have released unpopular products at some point and gone back to the drawing board. It's called business.

With Zune Microsoft abandoned dedicated players in favour of merging Zune directly with Xbox and Windows, so the same systems and store are now 'Xbox Music' available in Window 8, in Windows Phone 8 and on 360.

Please don't try to pretend Microsoft is a business but Sony magically isn't and doesn't care about money or profitability either.
