I agree, tbh. I do think a lot reviewers have been unusually harsh on the game. It's average at best, but certainly doesn't deserve scores like 2s and 3s. Buggy and downright unplayable games deserve those types of scores.
Hell, one of the reviews I read spent paragraphs bitching about the intro level because there wasn't enough shooting and Duke one-liners. FFS it was the intro level. Let the game set its story up first. >_>

If it's any consolation, the N64 version of Duke3d was pretty awful. The conversion to N64 graphics made many of the textures fuzzy/warped to look at and difficult to move around, entire areas were removed from the game, and most of the "naughty parts" (Duke's catchphrases, strip clubs, violence, blood, etc.) were completely edited out.
It barely even resembled the original game.
It's looks so bulky too. And the shape doesn't seem to fit with the natural shape of a person's hands. It makes sense for an iPad because you're (presumably) not going to be using it for hours on end. But a game controller? I just don't understand what the designer was going for :/
I don't know if I'd call it better than the early Resident Evil games, but I definitely enjoyed it. And agree that it was one of the best PSone horror games. It's a shame Square didn't continue the series back when it was still in it's prime. I think it could have become another one of Square's big series if they had kept making PE games.

True, but Randy said in many interviews that the reason his team picked up Duke Nukem Forever is because he was a massive fan of the original games.
Even though it was tossed together fairly quickly after the original cancellation, I think Randy really believed they had a great game with DNF.
Ouch. I'm starting to feel kinda bad for the makers now. I know Gearbox should have tried better if they wanted a better game, but I remember before the game out how Randy Pitchford genuinely thought they had made a good game. It must suck having so many people saying your work is actually shit.
Though the reviewer brings up a good point about the map. It's funny that a game that came out in 1993 is much more exploratory than one that came out in 2011.

I've played plenty of 5/10 games and enjoyed them. They might not be perfect, but they have elements that are fun and/or enjoyable. People still buy average games...even if they wait until they hit the bargain bin to do so.
