"PS3 November 2006 (a Year Late due to problems)."

The PS3 wasn't late, it was rushed to arrive early. The only reason Sony ever announced an earlier date was to keep people from getting a 360. Which kind of backfired.

...it's a very smart move. PS3 BC was always meant to be software-based. Only because they didn't have the software ready in time they included hardware BC, which increased the cost of the system. You can't have this stuff ready too early.

I'm hoping though that the PS4 will be based around the Cell architecture so that developers can leverage more of their knowledge during the generational shift.

I’m definitely interested in this game though I haven’t even played the first game yet (should arrive any day now). I’m not a big fan of FPS games (Quake 2 , Unreal and Unreal Tournament kind of destroyed my interest though I had plenty of fun with TimeSplitters 2 multiplayer on GC) but around summer last year I picked up Killzone for little mainly because I always loved the art direction and KZ2 started to look really promising. And I can’t say I regret it. Though it had plenty of technical ...

"I'm sure there is place for all consoles. They all offer different things. I know you all like to fight over who is best, so have fun. But at the end of the day you buy the one that has the games for you. Enjoy them and be happy. All I care is that the xbox sells enough to see another in the next gen."

The problem is that there isn't. The current business model and market size can't support three consoles. Which is why Sega dropped out of the race a few years ago. Th...

"As I always pulled for HD-DVD this disturbs me, I like the cheaper duplication costs and at least some potential for cost-effective burners in our PCs."

As if the same will not be achieved with Blu-Ray if it gets adopted by the masses. This is one of the worst arguments to support a format. HD-DVD made use of 'proven' (as in antiquated) DVD technology and is less future-proof than Blu-Ray. While HD-DVD may have been cheaper in the short term, it might be more expensi...

And I will definitely not get this one. It might have nice graphics but it's worse than Burnout 3 from a gameplay perspective. And the inclusion of an open city adds absolutely nothing to the gameplay. Old fashioned menus work better and way faster. Yet another missed 'next gen' opportunity.

That’s what MS and the gaming press would like you to believe. But highly subjective, inflated review scores are no proper indication of the quality of a gaming year. Each year the gaming press claims a year as the best in gaming ever. The only thing they ever do is building up hype and in most cases also sustaining it with high review scores because the positive attitude drives sales of both magazines and games with the consumer suffering from yet another piece of generic HD crap.

These figures indicate that Sony was stupid to fear the rushed 360 and rush the PS3 to market as well, from a console perspective at least. Without PS3, they probably would have lost the HD movie format war. Depending on where Sony expects to make the most money, it was either a wise or a stupid decision from a business perspective.

But for gamers it was a bad decision, that’s for sure. The xbox leaves the mainstream consumer pretty cold and that’s where the money’s at. Sony s...

...while KZ2 is still in development and we know little about it. We only got hype at the moment.

What I liked about the first game was the great art direction. The game had plenty of graphical issues (especially pop-up and framerate stutters) but it was still a blast to play for me even in the PS3 age.

And because I liked the first game while it had plenty of room for improvement, I'm looking forward to a sequel for once. Doesn't mean it will be great but it sur...

I'd love to get some more KZ2 info. I only played the first one recently (I picked it up cheaply and played it on the PS3) and I enjoyed it very much, though I had all but given up on FPSs.

I hope they keep the game 'realistic' and don't go too much towards the arcade direction of Halo and Unreal Tournament.

"The thing is, gaming journalism is no more honest than any other subset of journalism"

I'd say they're much less honest. Game journalism is still in its infancy, with way too much focus on the hardcore gamer. Just look at the relatively poor scores Wii games get while it's a runaway success with the consumers.

Even if the assumptions of the article are correct (which I doubt) and the number of players for both formats is more or less equal, there's still the fact that Blu-Ray movies themselves outsell HD-DVD.

It would have been better if parties had never let it get to a format war but now that there is (was?) one, it must be kept as short as possible.

You didn't get it straight. What Sony Sports, Midway and Ubi are doing is not sending review code anymore to EGM. If they're just doing this because they don't like fairly given low scores it's a bad thing. But I can't blame them if they suspect EGM of bias or think they're not professional.

Btw, as a former subscriber to said magazine I can confirm that the quality has gone down dramatically over the past few years.

Sony are no saints but when it comes to company ethics, few are as bad as Microsoft. If Sony isn't good enough for you (which is a fair opinion) MS shouldn't be either.

As for the spying on consumers, that was Microsoft. What Sony did was illegally installing software on your PC to prevent you from making copies of their CD's. As far as I know it didn't send any information back to Sony, unlike WGA spyware.

If you have such stringent moral standards on which you judge companies, you probably stay way clear of Microsoft... If not, you're a hypocrite.
