I started playing games way back on the Commodore 64. When the NES came around, I came to see RPGs as the reason games exist. I was VERY impressed by games like Final Fantasy 6, Shining Force, and Chrono Trigger. But, the first game to really make my jaw drop had to be, *shocker*, Final Fantasy 7.
If there were only mobile games, hundreds of millions of gamers would have nothing to play. You really think NO ONE is going to tap that market? Unless mainstream gaming all moves to PC, consoles will never die.
I think you largely underestimate how many people prefer turn-based. It's not "one sale lost". In this case, it'll be millions of sales lost. I'm not saying we're the majority; but there ARE millions of us.
"The top current JRPG's on consoles are action based"
That's not saying much. JRPGs need to return to their form from the 90's, where we had a good balance of turn-based, turn-based strategy, and action, and all of those games had MUCH more effort put into them than today's JRPGs. Otherwise, I don't see a point in JRPGs existing at all. It really can't get worse than it is now.
"It's no secret that the video game industry is and has always been about trends, and for JRPGs, Final Fantasy has always been on the vanguard. When Final Fantasy went 3D, other JRPGs were right behind it. When Final Fantasy went to PlayStations 1 and 2, other JRPGs followed suit. And when Final Fantasy declined, with only one single-player main installment in the series even coming out during the last generation of consoles, other JRPGs simply started to disappear." <...
Shadow Hearts, Xenoblade Chronicles, and Final Fantasy 13-3 (Lightning Returns) immediately come to mind. In the case of Shadow Hearts, and FF13-3, they even pretend it's the real God. In Xenoblade, it's more of a "We hate all gods! We can do it ourselves!"
I've also recently heard that at least one of the Shin Megami Tensei/Persona games does this; which isn't surprising, considering the whole demon thing in the games.
I just looked up the sales numbers (vgchartz; take it how you will), and WOW, it barely broke 1 million (Wii and WiiU) in Japan! That does explain this decision, and also explains why they're now bringing it to 3DS.
Hopefully, that version also flops. Obviously, there's no such thing as too much evidence of what we actually want from JRPGs, because SquareEnix seems to be ignoring it all.
They prefer handhelds because that's where Japanese companies have been releasing all the games for the past decade. Handhelds/mobile won't go away, but if these companies start making console games again, Japanese people will flock back to consoles.
Yeah, but I can kind of understand why. Very rarely do you run into someone who is truly neutral on the subject. Even most people who claim to be neutral, really aren't.
