Hey there N4G community. Some of you might know me from casually participating in the N4G community, where I sporadically make sardonic and/or facetious comments. Some of you might know me because articles from my website, or from other sites I occasionally write for, sometimes appear on N4G. Some of you might know me because I dated your sister. If so... I'm sorry.
My personal website isn't exclusively about gaming. When I'm not being paid to do it, I generally write about whatever happens to be on my mind, which – more often than not – tends to be about something geeky. I'm a nerd. I can't help it.
Now, I'm not much into video making. I have a YouTube account, and I have made a couple of videos, but by and large I don't mess with them.
Today marks an exception.
Something I am very passionate about is the '90s. I love the 90's. I was born in '82, so while I did get a few years of awareness in the '80s, the '90s is where I did most of my growing up. This is also why I have such a strong attachment to the so-called "golden age" of gaming. I firmly believe that the Super Nintendo was the greatest video game system ever created, and at least 6 of my top games of all time came way before Sony and Microsoft asserted their dominance into the realm of console gaming. I realize that nostalgia does skew objectivity a bit, and I accept that. That doesn't change one inalienable fact though: The '90s brought with it some absolute masterpieces of video gaming history.
It's this passion for not only '90s gaming, but the magical decade in which I grew up in as a whole, which lead me to create the video I'm about to present to you. It isn't fancy, and it isn't anything that hasn't been done before, but it's mine. If you didn't grow up or live during the '90s, you will likely be apathetic towards this video. If you did live during the '90s though, it may tug on your heartstrings a little bit.
I chose to post this video in a 'blog' post, rather than posting something that wasn't exclusive to gaming as news, like some other people tend to do. This video does, however, contain a good amount of gaming references. Also, as stated before, this won't necessarily appeal to everyone. I know that other gamers in my age range are tromping around N4G, though, and I wanted to share a little taste of the past with them.
So without ado, here it is:
Addendum: There are some things that I couldn't include in the video because I wanted to condense it within the breadth of one song. I know I left out Nickelodeon Gak, Floam, several big artists, a crap-load of great games, and Joey Buttafuoco. If you didn't catch Donkey Kong Country or Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in the video, please don't hold it against me; I wanted to include as much variation as possible, and capture the overall feel of the decade, even if that meant not everything could be included. If the video was 20 minutes long, who the hell would watch it anyway?
