Really, what's the point of another GTA?

I've come to the point of realizing that most gamers have their niche. Some of us love MMO's, some dig FPS games, alot of us go in for open world single player titles.
The list goes on...
But something else I've been realizing that some games aren't really evolving like others are.
Take for example GTA V.
From what I'm seeing the game has some beautiful graphics, intriguing storylines, and, of course, plenty of mindless carnage.

Just like the last 4 GTA titles.

The game is supposed to be a "crime simulator", by most accounts, right? Then why is it that the crimes (outside of a few mission based exceptions) always revolve around the same things?
Murder, solicitation, armed robbery, and grand theft auto(duh), seem to be the only crimes you can commit without mission prompts.

You would think that by this stage in the series that you would have burglary, pick-pocketing, kidnapping, computer hacking, and identity theft, just to name a few, and it would all be open world options. Hell, I'd be impressed if the cops (and let's face it, GTA cops have always been dumb as glass hammers) would pull you over for speeding, blasting through red lights, driving on the sidewalks, and so on.
In truth, it seems like unless you go on a psychotic killing spree, the cops barely take notice. That's just stupid.

Now, I'm not saying that the game is bad, and I'm sure I'll end up playing it, if for no other reason than to hope I'm proven wrong, but it seems to me that I'm going to be playing the same game I've been playing since 2001, with updated graphics.

GTA isn't the only series that is guilty of this, but it's the title that people seem to leave out when it comes to re-hashing the same, old, tired, content. Games like Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, Resident Evil, and every Fifa, Madden, 2Kxx game do the same thing.
The problem is that when you say something about a "fan favorite" that's doing the exact same thing, you become a pariah. Well, I'm throwing it out there. Rockstar better deliver a little more with this one. They owe it to us for supporting a long line of the same game.

Look at Watchdogs. Sure, the premise is entirely different, but you can already see that it's a game with far more potential for open world interaction, with only the imagination limiting what can be done. I haven't seen anything in the trailers for GTA V that would lead me to believe that Rockstar is doing more than milking the same cash cow that they've been riding for 12 years now.

I'm ready for Rockstar to step up and try something new. But of course, I'm just the vocal minority. Most of you will probably want to crucify me for this, but if you can explain what has been new, or innovative, about GTA since 2001, I'd like to hear it.

It's funny you say that about Grand Theft Auto, but not Call of Duty, which has been recycling the same material since Modern Warfare. Grand Theft Auto games always bring something new and innovative to the table and while Call of Duty games are fun, there's little to differentiate one from another. With Grand Theft Auto, however, there's more than enough substance to keep the series going.

What troubles me most is that you're basing these opinions on what, two trailers that didn't show anything other than character personalities and action.

"You would think that by this stage in the series that you would have burglary, pick-pocketing, kidnapping, computer hacking, and identity theft, just to name a few, and it would all be open world options."

What makes you so certain that these features are not included in the game? You don't know any more than I do about Grand Theft Auto 5 and I've been following it since the game was announced. Your statements are supported by blind presupposition and that does not make for a stable argument, I'm sorry.

You know as well as I do that the features themselves would have been touted for quite some time now, if they were to be implemented.
As for you saying that "Grand Theft Auto games always bring something new and innovative to the table", please, explain to me what is so new and innovative about doing the same thing over and over, beyond the different settings.

Call of Duty is just as guilty, same as Assassin's Creed, Resident Evil, and every damn Madden game since the Playstation. I'm not excusing them.

It's just that nobody seems to want to own up that the GTA series is just as guilty as these titles when it comes to milking the public's money based on past innovations. Report me, downplay what I'm saying, but don't you dare defend it's "substance" when it's obvious it's just the same game played over and over, ad naseum.

GTA 3 was one of the first games that blew us all away with 3D graphics coupled with open-world gameplay.

I mean, it's hard to accuse rockstar of milking the cash cow, when GTA V has already taken more than 2 years of development time to make.

Rockstar always make great quality games. Sure, they may have some weird bugs, but you know exactly what you're getting with them.

I think it has taken about 5 years of developement time to make. They started work on GTA V right before gta iv was released

Was it a different team on red dead?

unchartedxplorer4016d ago

Yeah. R* San Diego did Red Dead I think. R* North have been making GTA V ever since gta 4

Another terrible piece of Journalism.

"plenty of mindless carnage" <--- THIS! "if you can explain what has been new, or innovative, about GTA since 2001, I'd like to hear it" - I don't care about innovation. I play video games for *Get This* fun.
