So before I start I would just like to say that no I haven't played every single sequel ever made so obviously some will be missing. These are also not the worst sequels ever made, just the ones which should never have been made for reasons that will be explained. So let's get the ball rolling with the top 5 sequels that should never have been made (in recent history)!
5. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2
You know what The Force Unleashed 1 was? It was a nice little trip into the pants of fanboys which wasn't perfect especially regarding combat but it was enjoyable. Do you know what The Force Unleashed 2 is? It is utter crap, abysmal, disgraceful etc. The Force Unleashed 2 represents everything that could go wrong with a sequel and does. The characters get even less likeable, the combat is still broken and the game is ridiculously short. The plot which is the only good thing in this sequel dissolves into something less and less spectacular as the game progresses and by the end all Starkiller wants to do is woo the wovely wady...
But that is the biggest sin that this game commits because the world or universe that Star Wars has created and especially the time frame that the game is set in ripe for harvesting. Official cannon between the two trilogies barely exists and so the game could've done anything and gotten away with it but no.....a cameo by Yoda and Boba Fett and game over. This sequel should never have been made because it practically killed off the Force Unleashed franchise because of how terrible it was. Thanks for that.
4. Assassins Creed: Brotherhood
As I said in the intro these games aren't necessarily the worse sequels and here is a perfect example. Brotherhood is actually quite a good game but what it stands for gets it on this list. What it stands for is the point that Assassins Creed went from that special triple A franchise into another yearly spin off juggernaut.
So the first problem was the reduced development time. Assassins Creed 1 to 2 was 2 years of development but 2 to Brotherhood was only 1. Is it apparent? Yes. A shorter and less interesting campaign which decided to focus on Desmond (because you know he's such an interesting character who we all love) instead of the vast amount of intriguing historical assassinations. Brotherhood managed to dilute the impact made by the brilliant Assassins Creed 2 by basically flipping off all those who invested their time and money into the campaign so far.
Oh but wait there is multiplayer. Yes lets not forget the introduction of multiplayer to the series, because it made everything better didn't it? No it bloody didn't! Multiplayer and a shorter development ruined the series and if you don't believe me look at the reviews of Revelation and see how excited the reviewers are at playing another chapter in this milked franchise. Brotherhood is on this list because it put this franchise on a slippery slope. At the bottom of that slope was the remains of the Guitar Hero franchise and the smell of a quick buck. If Brotherhood had never come along Ubisoft would never have gotten into that position.
3. Red Faction: Armageddon
Hands up who liked Red Faction: Guerilla? Most of you then. That's good because it was a good game. It was fun, original in its own way and focused on a love of destruction. Now imagine a sequel where all that was good was reversed. The large open world is replaced with narrow, linear corridors. The numerous buildings littering the world were now replaced with indestructible rock formations. The enemies went from human soldiers to rabid aliens. The weapons were, actually they were still pretty badass, A+. Regardless of how good the magnet gun was to play around with it doesn't change the fact that the game tried to evolve into something new, but managed to leave all that was good behind in its futile attempt to make a better game.
It also didn't help that the characters were utter retards. Your character, Darius Mason has a machine that that can rebuild any man made structure, yes any. This makes for some interesting situations where you are being attacked by hordes of enemies and you can rebuild cover for you to hind behind. But the point is that the whole story revolves around the destruction of a terraformer on Mars surface. This wouldn't be so bad if I hadn't ended up fixing said terraformer while it was being blown up in game. Yes I managed to work out that I could fix it within seconds of it blowing up and yet in game the spastic characters take around a few years. Sweet Jesus.
So the game wasn't that good overall but it actually killed the franchise unlike The Force Unleashed which might, Armageddon actually did. THQ confirmed that Red Faction probably wouldn't return after poor sales. Well THQ if you didn't make such crap games which people would only consider buying on the cheap, or say preowned, then there would be no need for online passes would there?
2. Resident Evil 5
Resident Evil 4 was brilliant. End of and I will hear nothing against it but Resident Evil 5 however. The internet has only ever been right on two occasions with me regarding videogames. Firstly with the lack of dungeons in Dragon Age 2 (I still can' believe there was only 1) and the other was just how bad Resi 5 was. This game is so bad you simply must not play it, no don't get curious about it. Go nowhere near it.
There are many reasons why this game sucks, many. The controls are bad at best, the characters and plot are ridiculous, the enemies are boring but the prize for worst feature in Resi 5 is the co-op and all the problems that come with it. Not only is your partner an imbecile but the storage system is just...the...worst thing I have ever encountered in videogame history. Whoever came up with this idea needs to be fired from wherever they are and blacklisted from society.
Resi 5 should never have been made because Capcom clearly had no idea what to do with it. Many of the positives came from Resi 4 and since they released that again this generation Resi 5 has no place in this world. Bad gameplay, bad story, bad, bad, bad al round.
1. Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One
Now I admit that I am a massive fan of Ratchet and Clank series, in fact such a fan that I would honestly say it might be my favourite gaming franchise ever. It is funny, good looking, well paced, action packed and replayability. I admit in 'A Crack in Time' Insomniac had begun to run out of ideas for weapons but that does not justify the all new 4 player co-op extravaganza of All 4 One.
The complete change of direction for the series from an enjoyable romp through the galaxy to 4 player co-op platformer is jarring for all. Jarring because a single player game has now jumped ship onto the multiplayer express even though multiplayer had never, ever been on the table. The change isolates the fanbase because it's not what we're used to. I'm not saying that games shouldn't change but such a drastic change from one game is very risky (see Red Faction: Armageddon above).
When All 4 One was announced as the next adventure for Ratchet and co I was overjoyed to get back to the series but the more I saw, the more I read the more I realised that it wasn't for me. It got mixed responses from the media ranging from 8 – 4/10 (and although I cannot find any sales figures) it would appear that the game hasn't really set the world on fire. It was a nice little trip but let's hope that it was a one of and Ratchet and Clank can return in another fully fledged adventure soon.
So there you have it. 5 sequels that shouldn't have happened this generation. There are of course many more but being biased these are mine and it would be nice to know yours, so comment away.
