Has Xbox Lost Timed-Exclusivity of Destiny?

GalacticEmpire | 551d ago
User blog

I recently noticed someone in the pending section trying to suggest that Destiny would be launched simultaneously across both PS3 and 360 by posting a link directly to the Destiny website. I was going to suggest he/she write a blog to better make their point but then I thought, what the hell, I'll write one myself.

It has been long rumoured that Bungie's first game away from the clutches of Microsoft would be a timed exclusive to Xbox (whichever one). This was due to some kind of legal disclosure involving Activision and had among it's many stipulations that Bungie must sell 6 million copies and release on Xbox in late 2013, it would then be allowed to release on Playstation some time later. (Link below)
http://www.gamerevolution.c...

However, after the reveal today there has been no word of this timed exclusivity and Destiny's very own website has links to pre-order the PS3 version of the game. While this doesn't really confirm anything, it does kind of suggest they may release much closer to each other than previously thought, if not at the same time.

This is excellent news for PS3 and prospective PS4 owners and, in all honesty, will help the game get off the ground as it will no longer alienate an entire console's fanbase. I always thought it strange that Bungie would escape MS only to enter into a timed exclusivity deal of some sort. Even though this may sting to some Xbox fanatics, they should try and see it as a positive for one of their worshipped developers who has helped Xbox gain popularity more than any other.

Destiny is shaping up to be a very ambitious title indeed, I'm actually unsure how they are going to pull it off myself, but I'm glad that it's looking more likely that gamers on both platforms will have the opportunity to try it out at the same time. I know my fingers are firmly crossed for cross-platform play.

Here's the link for the preoders, which clearly has PS3 marked right next to 360 and even has PS3 boxart pop up when you click it.

What do you think will happen with Destiny's release and are you happy or dissapointed by the potential of a simultaneous release?

UPDATE: It has been brought to my atytention through some helpful comments that there's also a Dev video promoting theg ame on Sony's Youtube channel link here:

The contract was more for Activision and Bungie's protection than an indication of what they saw as the ideal release plan. It's just a guarantee as to the minimum each side could expect from each other.

Bungie knew they could do a 360 game. They had no idea what it was like to do a PS3 game though, nevermind both at the same time. Agreeing to anything beyond what they knew for certain they could deliver would have been a bad idea.

The 2014 date was just a guarantee that if they decided to do a PS3 version, that was the target, and Bungie couldn't do less, and Activision couldn't demand more. But that doesn't mean they couldn't mutually agree to release the PS3 version earlier if both sides agreed it could be done.

Activision and Bungie clearly wanted the series to be multiplatform, and neither were going to have a problem doing what they could to make it multiplatform on day one.

Considering the last we heard about exclusivity (timed or otherwise) was in a three year old contract we were never supposed to see in the first place, and how it's been announced for PS3 and 360, and already has a pre-order bonus, odds are the release date is the same for all versions.

"it was supposed to be a timed exclusive. "

So it never had it really..

MS wants to repeat this gen.
.

It's mass effect 1 all over again.

with Activision being the publisher it'll make its way to as many platforms as possible. holding back on potential gains just because of some contract made years ago doesnt make much sense. Remember, enough money throw in the right direction will make any said contract insignificant, and being its bungie title and from the publishers who bring us COD, we are talking LOTS of potential money here

I dont remember Destiny being an exclusive game. It' a secret project teased a few days ago, and showed today.

The "exclusive" part is everyone assuming that every game made by Bungie is exclusive to MS.

If they really want to sell 6 million copies that is almost certainly going to take the combined effort of both ps3 and xbox userbases. Very very few hardcore games that are a new ip have ever sold that many copies without being bundled with a console.

I remember what this guy is talking about. Bungie saying they'll worry about a PS3 version after the 360 version launches, or something to that point.

im not really sure about this but isnt this game suposed to be like a mmo? if it is then this game wont be seen tell next gen bacause the 360 cannot handle mass worlds as a mmo thats why ms doesnt have one and sony does already have one which is dc even though the world isnt big its still a mmo and that ff thats suposed to becoming for ps3 that would be two mmos for sony and ms hasnt got one to my knowledge but i also do not play xbox because i have had nothing but issues out of them.

I think the most interesting aspect of the game is the fact it's likely to be cross generational, not cross platform.

The one thing I hearing from this being an "always on title" is that Gold subscriptions might make the Xbox the lesser appealing platform.
TheRealHeisenberg  +   550d ago
It is the truth for me. I'll get this on PS if it is any good. Gold will not see another dime of my money unless MS does it like Ps+

I thought I made it clear in the blog that it was rumoured that they were to have TIMED EXCLUSIVITY but this may no longer be the case. Looks like most people have misunderstood so I've updated the title to better reflect my point, thanks to everyone who left me links and constructive ctiticism. Helpful bubs all round :)

Timed-exclusivity implies that a deal was made between companies to deliberately delay the release of a product on other platforms or in other territories. That was never the case with Destiny. Bungie are new to the PS3 and will only release a PS3 version if they are confident it will be of equal quality, hence the reason the Xbox 360 version may have been released first. However that is doubtful as Sony force developers to add exclusive content to the PS3 version of multiplatform games that are released on other systems first.

Actually it was written into the contract in 2010 when Bungie joined Activision, which I'm guessing is before they began full development.

http://www.latimes.com/ente...

This means that it was likely part of a deal with MS to let Bungie go or some other agreement between Activision and MS. This is where the rumours of timed exclusivity originally came from and that is what I'm discussing in the blog. Also I clearly stated that it was just a rumour so I'm unsure why people are arguing as if I put it across as a fact.

Many people, especially on this site, were stating in comments that, at least, timed-exclusivity was a matter of fact. It's this assumption that I want to call out and nothing more.
