The Bleeding Hearts Here Are Really Quite Sad

DragonKnight | 551d ago
User blog

Do you know what this site has devolved into this passed month? A bunch of crying children who feel slighted for absolutely no reason. I mean it's pathetic. The amount of "this site is overrun and controlled by ___ fanboys," the sarcastic responses on any number of articles and blogs by whiny "I'm not represented properly" fanboys, it's just sad.

Here's the facts people, there are only 2 things that this site is overrun with. Fanboys of ALL kinds, and confirmation bias. Over the past week I've been contacted by all kinds of pissed off fanboys of a specific group, claiming that I'm a fanboy of a specific group and that the proof is in my 6 Bubbles, telling me that I don't criticize a certain company and avoid blah blah blah. Yet, I was recently debubbled for alleged trolling against this opposing group down to 5 bubbles but this site is overrun right? Wrong.

The fact is people who are pissed off that they don't get to act like idiots and troll everywhere are the ones being debubbled and the ones talking the loudest about how the mods are corrupt and this site has too many of one side. The indisputable truth is that these very same people wouldn't open their mouths if their bubble count were higher and they could go on putting down whatever opposing side they wished whenever they wished. This fanboy war and raging superiority complexes is pathetic.

I've been given examples of forum numbers, people who were debubbled, comments that were censored, all in some attempt to showcase that one side is a minority, the other a majority. Newsflash, this isn't society and it's not racial issues. Every single person on this site has a story about a time when they were debubbled unjustly or unfairly. Every person on this site has a story where they felt they were not treated properly by a mod. GET OVER YOURSELVES!

You're all seeking out the problems you claim exist. You're digging your own graves in that respect. "So if company A does this it's the worst thing ever but when company B does it they're godly and righteous." <- Read that and tell me that that isn't pathetic. You're trying to tell me that the kind of person writing that isn't LOOKING for the kind of people he/she claims is the problem?

Give it up. People will react to news. They will want to see news they like more than news they don't like. They will talk about negative news more than positive because that's human nature. Why else do you think most news stories on television aren't happy ones? If you don't like that most of the news about one thing is negative while most of the news about another isn't, then either leave or just look for the positive news you want. If it's not out there whose fault do you think that is?

Bottom line, this is a gaming news website. It has literally no impact on your life unless it's your job to run it so stop the crying.

I don't think the site has devolved at all over the last month. This site - no, the entire internet - has pretty much been that way since the Great Console Wars of 2006 when Sony and MS went toe-to-toe.

The only difference today is that a certain segment of fanboys (who shall remain nameless) was loyal to the "dominant" console which had the most exclusives, the best multiplats, the highest-rated games, and the best online. And that certain segment of fanboys loved to rub it into the faces of the other segment of fanboys. But over the years, the other segment of fanboys gained more ammunition for their defense as their console of choice improved dramatically. And now, the tables have completely reversed: the fanboys of the once-dominant console are left with a mere shadow of a console compared to what it once was, while the fanboys whose console was mocked for years are top dog in the hardcore gaming community. Due to years of bitter resentment, the fanboys are just returning the favor, and a lot of people are embittered about it.

Again, not naming names, but...

That's all well and good, but why extend that kind of fanboyism to a completely new generation of consoles. I mean really. Fanboys have been around since the very beginning. I mean, remember the Sega Does what Nintendon't wars? But the one thing I remember that has changed in recent gaming history is that fanboyism didn't carry over in the way it does today.

And people need to understand that people will react to news based on what the news is. People don't like the idea of blocked used games or always-online and will talk about their dislike.
dedicatedtogamers  +   551d ago
Remember that certain companies - using the power of the internet as well as aggressive marketing campaigns - pushed forward the idea of "mindshare" this generation. This console generation was easily the most publicized gen of all time, partially due to the Wii reaching out to new audiences, but also due to more advertising than ever before.

And because people's minds have been grabbed by this "mindshare" campaign, they are going to feel very strongly one way or another way in regards to certain companies. And guess what they do? They get emotional and cry about it on gaming forums, because the real world doesn't tolerate baby attitudes like that, so they have to flee to the internet.
DragonKnight  +   551d ago
True. Mindshare was one of the worst things about this gen. And that's saying a lot considering there was A LOT wrong with this gen coming from all the companies.
HammadTheBeast  +   550d ago
Trust me. It will get a LOT worse once MS announce their console, and both Sony and Microsoft bring the big guns out.

"Due to years of bitter resentment, the fanboys are just returning the favor,"

Well I am EXACTLY one of the fans you were describing but I don't like the word fanboy. I don't consider myself one for the simplest of reasons. I NEVER lie or bend the truth in any way in my favour.

My mind was "virgin" and pure as I eagerly entered this site back in 2005-2006. It didn't take long to find I actually started to have a grudge against a certain group and the media too. It was mind boggling to read all the lies and BS that went on.

Today that certain group of people play the victim card all the time. Either that or then they deny any BS going on in here in 2005-2008 completely. LOL!

Besides that one word your comment was spot on ^^
Fluke_Skywalker  +   550d ago
I've been here since 06 and until around the start of 09 this site was very very biased towards one side to the point where being a fan of the other side... screw this bollocks.

Up until 2009 being a PlayStation fan on this site was almost as bad as being fatty in Bannatynes! Back then the Xbots were EVIL I tell you EVIL!!
DigitalRaptor  +   549d ago
There's no point in going stealth on this message insomnium.

It's the Xbox fanboys you're talking about and they are the ones that play victim and have been for the past few years, when it's Sony fans that have come through this gen knowing that the BS that was played by these guys and stoked like flames by the ravenous and biased gaming media was for the most part a huge pack of lies, misinformation and most horrible double standards.

Sure, it might be immature to do what it was they were doing back in 2005-2008 - and through no word of a lie just like how media spread lies and BS, these people were vile in their messages, actions and attitudes and wholly dishonest (and some people like to twist facts and react incredulously to them to this day) - but to tell the truth or even just discuss talking points of an upcoming generation and have people cry about it and be called out as "fanboys" - it's really kinda... I don't know the word... 'pathetic' is all that comes to mind.

Now I'm not saying there aren't ridiculous people on here on the Sony or Nintendo or PC side spreading BS too, I'm simply commenting on how pathetic playing the victim now, after how this generation panned out. There are a couple of buzzwords I can attach to this situation:

Somewhere along the line, we have to confront the fact that we're complaining about complainers who only complain about small things but ignore the larger issues which deserve complaints.

Anyways, as an offtopic aside, the blog reminded me of the user RedDragan. Not because he's whiny or anything like that, but rather because your avatar is red, and has the word 'Dragon', and his avatar is a crying baby similar to the image you used in the blog.
Amusing coincidence, is all.

You can't even come up to these people with things they should be complaining about because they defend bad practices. Always-online requirement? Meh people are always connected anyway. Used game block? Meh, I buy new and the developers should get extra money for no extra work. I'm just tired of seeing how many people repeat the same nonsense complaints and at the same time completely ignore that everything they're complaining about happens to the majority of the members on the site and that fanboys of all kinds are everywhere. I have had to block enough people because they won't shut up about some perceived member denomination slant that makes it impossible for them to comment due to debubble attacks and corrupt mods.

Always Online? Used game block?

Oooooh, I see. So that's what this is about. So people should stop talking about what they can quantify, and complain blindly about things that cannot yet be quantified. Gotcha.

"Meh, I buy new and the developers should get extra money for no extra work."

I'm sorry, who defines what "extra work" is? You?

Oh hey there Convas, how's it going? I usually don't reply to one bubble members because they then PM me incessantly but, meh.

"Oooooh, I see. So that's what this is about. So people should stop talking about what they can quantify, and complain blindly about things that cannot yet be quantified. Gotcha."

Cool, you completely missed the point. Good for you. :D

"I'm sorry, who defines what "extra work" is? You?"

Nope. The idea that extra work is actually doing something, you know, extra. Can you provide an example of why a developer should get extra profit on a disc and game that is no different from the time between when it's bought new and the time it's bought used? And no, DLC isn't the same thing because that's work meant so that people keep the game and people pay for that.

Yay, if it isn't my favourite pissed off 360 fanboy that went on a rampage in my PM box before blocking my ability to respond, Donkey Kong 286,000 Points. How ya doin' buddy? Still raging I see. You need to stop that Donkey Kong cosplay or you start to think you're an actual pissed off gorilla. Anyway, since you are my favourite trolling fanboy, I'll respond to you.

"So, one of the biggest fanboys here has decided that it's his responsibility to call out other fanboys."

I love how the angriest always call me a fanboy. I would make a request of you for this blog post, but seeing as how you foolishly wasted your bubble attacking me, you can't comb through my comment history over, we'll say the passed 2 months, and find me acting like you. See, you ARE a fanboy, you can't really deny that, and you aggressively attack anything that's not MS and claim anyone that isn't pro-MS is a fanboy. But, I suppose that that's moot since there's nothing you can do about it.

"You rarely provide anything constructive to a conversation."

Apparently most would disagree with you, as evidenced by comments you can read right in this blog.

" All you do is attack anyone who dares to question Sony or support MS."

I think you have me twisted with yourself and about a different console.

"You may think your nonstop sarcastic comments are funny, but the only people agreeing with you are equally delusional fanboys."

Right, says the guy doing the attacking with 1 bubble who has no room to be calling anyone a fanboy. Ok friend. Whatever makes you feel better.

"You're the Justin Bieber of N4G."

I don't smoke weed, I don't attack Paparazzi, I don't get into fights with neighbours over driving a car too loudly, and I don't think that Anne Frank would be my fan soooo... yeah, what were you saying?

"You may be popular, but you're also extremely shallow."

Aww, you think I'm popular? That means so much to me. I'd like to thank my mom, Jesus, the Internet... Wait, your opinion isn't an award? Well dammit why did I make this acceptance speech then?

Anyway, I spent too much time mocking your fanboyism to address your erroneous and biased points, which is my bad since I would have loved to waste my time taking apart your comment, but I can't help but approach you the way you obviously want to be approached. You want people to take you seriously and yet you throw tantrums everywhere because no one will let you act out as the fanboy you are and want to be. You can come and attack me all you want, but every problem you have here is your own doing and if I were given to being the comment historian that most fanboys like you are, I could definitely come up with a litany of recent (because what you said years ago isn't relevant to today) examples that show exactly the kind of person you are. Now I'm sure you have more Donkey Kong to go and play, so I'll leave you to it friend. Good night.

I feel as if you believe my blog may belong to the last group. In fact you have in this blog and the comments indirectly spoke about our recent debates. Used games ect. I think you read what you want to hear out of these blogs. My blog was not about fanboys but you told me the group in question did not exist so I was attacking Sony fanboys.

"Used game block? Meh, I buy new and the developers should get extra money for no extra work." Throughout our conversation about this I said that offering bonuses to new customers would be a better solution to online passes but I believe that they are better than nothing as supporting the shops who sell used games feels wrong to me. They do not offer a fair price on selling or buying used games.

In the end you are just complaining about people in the same fashion. Everyone has their own opinions on the site and various things. It is only natural that not everyone will agree on used games and always online. I was glad of our recent debates as it gave me a few points to think about.

"I was glad of our recent debates as it gave me a few points to think about."

This blog and this portion speaks volumes about how most posters here perceive an "opponent" after arguing. It's easier to personify them as being a jerk when they called you out previously about something or X social archetype whenever going against the grain of a controversial subject. We fail to realize the end result could have brought that poster to a new understanding or an angle not previously thought about.

I often find many members who I would classify as a fanboy, per Dragon's description, can carry on the conversation and debate much better through a PM conversation. Obviously it seems Dragon does have a different experience. However, there are many times when some of the most argumentative, seemingly trollish, or outright fanboy people here are quite reasonable and can make points and counter points and concede to new ideas and ways of thinking when talking to them one on one.

It's usually these private conversations that I find to be more like the old days of the console wars. Generally we kept our preference, but we could maintain civility when discussing our views, so long as we respectfully answer without bringing personal matters into it.

Sadly, with the way N4G is structured, it's really hard to carry on the better conversations over the course of the entire thread. Even with 5 bubbles, or more for some, we become limited on what points we can put out there. It's hard to waste a quick bubble just to ask a clarifying question, so often I'll expand on my idea, and put in my two cents before the other person even has a chance to respond.

That being said, I still think the bubble system is useful for keeping the trolls down, but there are so many of them that they still endlessly infect any decent conversation.

Now, with all that being said, I have never really had any of the experiences that Dragon has had through PM. It's probably because I don't actively engage trolls or rampant fanboys. To do so only brings that misery on yourself.

I personally like to read the well reasoned opinions that go against the popular opinion. I know just the other day, nukeitall...who I almost always disagree with, actually made a point that made his decision to pay for XBL seem reasonable. Unfortunately though, most of those dissenting opinions do go unnoticed in the sea of trolls.

"...can carry on the conversation and debate much better through a PM conversation. Obviously it seems Dragon does have a different experience."

PM conversations aren't always so dandy for me either. I won't name anyone, but there's been a few times where somehow civil discourse has taken place, then that same person could be at my throat the next time X controversial issue is made on the same subject. As if the whole thing didn't happen.

There's really not much else I have to say so...thanks for taking the time to submit that reply. :)

Actually this blog has absolutely nothing to do with anything you and I discussed and is a general statement of what I've personally seen and have been made to experience. It's actually nothing new, but it's been a hell of a lot worse since the PS4 event. As such, since this isn't about you or what we discussed specifically, I won't touch on any of your points save for the last one since we haven't discussed it.

"In the end you are just complaining about people in the same fashion. Everyone has their own opinions on the site and various things. It is only natural that not everyone will agree on used games and always online. I was glad of our recent debates as it gave me a few points to think about."

Yes, I am just complaining about people. I can't deny that. And yes, people are entitled to their own opinions. The problem is when they act as though there is a "weight" placed on opinions. That one group of people are allowed to have their opinion and are rewarded for it, and another group aren't allowed to have their opinion and are punished for it. And let's not get it twisted, there's a difference between "opinion" and and unfounded hate or trolling. You don't like a console? Cool that's fine you don't have to. But you also don't have to go everywhere there is news about that console and try to put down any positive news and complain that people don't like that you're doing that. You also don't have the right to then PM people or complain everywhere that, because you're being an a$$ hat, this site is overrun with a specific type of fanboys that are preventing you from voicing your opinions. The site isn't overrun by any specific group of fanboys, it's simply overrun by ALL fanboys.

I have 6 bubbles and I've criticised Nintendo, Sony and MS pretty harshly, maybe it's because I'm not overly biased to any one of them. Anyway, the thing is that none of these company's are perfect and if I don't agree with something they're doing I'll voice "my opinion" everyone is welcome to challenge my opinion or anyone's else's for that matter, but they shouldn't try to dismiss it if it ends up conflicting with their own.

Being a fan doesn't mean you have to agree with everything a company does, especially if it's anti consumer.

Anyway, nice blog Dragon.
