Uncharted 3 needs improvement
33 days 12 hours ago | by: ABizzel1
I love Uncharted 2 and here are some ideas to make Uncharted 3 (I hope it comes out on next gen hardware) even better than 2.

1. Open world or at least open world stages/ chapters.  The jungle stages are going to be in every Uncharted and I wish there was more jungle in Among Thieves, so make them like a real jungle which isn't limited.  I completely understand how having a linear experience helps guide the story, but some chapters need to be set in an open environment.

2. Stealth.  The stealth mechanic was decent in U2, so I think it should be expanded upon.  I'm not saying I want to play as Snake in full octo camo, but an idea would be to allow us to set up traps.

For example, we should be able to toss a propane tank to one side of the stage which should alert the guards to that side of the stage.  Have them surround it, and blow it up, alerting them even more making them begin to search for Drake (if they get too close to the propane tank they should scatter as if they know it's a trap).

Or

When in the jungle we should be able to lure a tiger or something into the enemy camp and maul some of the soldiers.  While we sneak in unharmed.  The thing is I know this kind of thing will take a lot of coding for the AI which is why I want U3 on next gen hardware.

3. Setting.  I think the next Uncharted should be a combination  of U2 and Drake's Fortune.  I enjoyed the full Jungle setting of Drake's Fortune, but being in the cities and mountains was nice as well (being in the village inhabited by people was a huge surprise, and a nice break from the action until the later events happened which was pure awesomeness).  Maybe Africa, or another island?

4. Climbing.  The climbing was a huge improvement over Drake's Fortune, but now they need to take it a step further, and become more like InFamous.  I need to be able to climb on stuff that looks like I can climb on.

5. Animations.  Most of the animations are great in U2, but they need to fix the rolling and jumping animation, they aren't up to par with everything else.  Oh and they need to add running to U3.  As of now Drake's run is more of a trot.  Push R3 to run should be standard in more games.

6. Multiplayer.  I love multiplayer, but it has problems.

I like things like the tank bursting in and killing random people, how everything from the single player is in the multiplayer, and the game types.

However, getting hit by someone when you're well out of range sucks, as well as getting shot when you're around the corner.  Weapons should spawn in random locations so we don't know where the RPG, Hammer, Pistol, etc... don't spawn.    Leaving games, especially co-op games since no one getting any points.  And multiplayer maps for each level in the game.  Most of this can be fixed with U2, so here's hoping they come up with more for multiplayer in U3.

And that's about it.  I have complete faith in Naught Dog with the single player campaign since both games were amazing.  And that's what it takes for U3 to be game of the year when it comes out.

1 - Uncharted 3 wish list
might have been a better title IMHO.

Also, why does Uncharted 3 need to be on the next gen console? There is still plenty ND can do with the code, PS3 is capable of so much more, and the PS4 is a ways off because of that. No need for the next iteration of Playstation for another, much improved upon Uncharted adventure.

Interesting. I don't think a full open world Uncharted will or should be done. But I think the open level idea would work. The stealth gameplay needs work. The trap idea will only work if you have the patience and most gamers don't just look at the multiplayer which I 100% agree with you on multiplayer. Animations and Setting are sure to be improved since they have a better understanding of the hardware. And the climbing needs to be more thought out next game.

Open World? What for? Uncharted is as good as it is by being linear and cinematic. It doesn't need to be GTA. Also, what's the point of setting the game in open environments, so you can backtrack? Developers can arrange for you to be able to go back and forth, you don't need to travel all the levels.

I guess it also needs a first person view to satisfy those FPS fans, and magic of RPG gamers, etc.

I don't want the game to be open world, just certain levels. You know how MGS4 had certain levels where you could take multiple paths to get to the same destination. Uncharted 3 needs something more like that especially the Jungle stages. A jungle is a completely open environment and Drake should be so limited in it. That's all I'm saying.

I agree the linear aspect of the game is why it has such a great flow and storytelling, but some stages just need to be bigger and more open which should take away from the game.

Set traps? There were enough propane canisters in position so the traps were already set. Besides, I had no trouble grabbing one and placing it at a point where I could realistically get it to without having the AI automatically turn and face the wall for me.

This isn't GTAIV designed for doing a bunch of funny stunts. There is a certain degree of realism the UC series maintains and ND have walked that thin line between gaming and actuality very very well. Better than any developer to date.

Here is a little rule when you have a winning formula like ND. "If it ain't broke don't fix it."

Polish (what they did from UC1 - UC2) is great. Change is bad.

That kind of saying "If it ain't broke don't fix it" is exactly why there's not creativity in Hollywood now, and it's starting to hit gaming Dante's Inferno, hundreds of shooters, etc...

Polishing a game is a start, but there needs to be evolution as well.

No, you are wrong. Everyone on this board is pointing to a simple fact that in your arrogance you ignore. What you seek to do breaks some of the cornerstones of the UC storytelling nature. You ignore that and fail to see how the game is actually paced by the developers.

Free roam? Absurd actually, and some one should tell you pure and simple your ideas are ridiculous. You refuse, intentionally or not, to comprehend that UC works precisely because it does not share many pitfall filled mechanics and designs shared by other games. But you would have those items brought into the series.

Why?

You fail, miserably so, to comprehend the difference between polish and redesign. It's a cold fact but of course you won't except it so keep ranting. I for one am done reading any more far fetched concepts built upon the lack of understanding as to how and why Uncharted works where so many games fail. It isn't the graphics or the physics but rather their core design and storytelling. Something you, in the name of more shallow pursuits, have quite clearly overlooked.

Ok first of all the you fail BS is ancient now, get your head out of G4's @$$ or where ever you got from.

Secondly I gave my opinion on what I though would make Uncharted 3 better. You gave your opinion on why you didn't agree which is fine. But to come back TO MY BLOG and attack my thoughts shows your ignorance. You're immature and juvenile, and not worth anyone's time. However, I'm more than willing to come down to anyone's level and put them in their place. If you don't like what I have to say don't come back then.

And finally I get the last say and the last word, because I have the power of the ignore button. So long jack@$$ guess that makes me #103.

Boohoo, I am on ignore. What is even more of a laugh is the fact I hate G4 and have no idea what they said about UC2. Ha ha ha. That channel ruined Tech TV.

For everyone else that is having to read your tripe we are all glad to see you admit when you were wrong and have lost the argument. That is a matter of absolute fact when an individual moves away from truth and resorts to the age old personal attack. At least you know when you've been beaten.

Having been to a game developer's studio or even working at a studio is meaningless. Tons of crap games are produced every year proving that many developers know less than the fans. This ISN'T one of those cases.

"I'm a game developer, therefore I know what I am talking about!"

LAMEST REASONING EVER.

"I know a college professor that worked at EA!"

Yeah, there is a reason he isn't there now creating great games.

Besides, Einstein was a college professor and he had plenty of knuckledraggers in his class.

"I know two guys that worked at Volition!"

Boy are you getting desperate. No amount of knowing this person or that matters. Volition? Please. Even if you say you know the devs from Naughty Dog, your laughable ideas prove the age old tenant that intellect and brilliance isn't gained through osmosis nor does it rub off on someone.

Naughty Dog obviously knows what they are doing. You do not. Is is most welcome to watch fans that understand this give you the beatdown of a lifetime.

I can only agree in that I would like U3 to have even more gameplay variety. I loved the first uncharted, and the second one is even better, so the same jump from U1 to U2 would be nice. However, changing the core elements of the franchise would ruin it for fans.

If you want bigger levels and more exploration, maybe I agree. But making an open world uncharted like GTA would suck. Also, before making Uncharted fully explorable, I would rather have the environments be completely dynamic.

Morganfell, the most full-of-himself arrogant POS fanboy on this site had the nerve to call someone else arrogant. That is HILARIOUS! All morganfell does is cry and whine all day long. ABizzel - You had some great ideas, and I'm sorry you had to hear morons like morganfell continue to beat the "change is bad" drum. It's those same idiots that thought the single player campaign was going to suffer due to the multiplayer being implemented. Uncharted 2 was a marked improvement over Uncharted 1, and I'm sure we will see even more improvement in the third title. I just can't wait to see some new locations. I do really like your open world level idea, btw. I really enjoyed the freedom in MGS4, because it wasn't a lot, but it definitely gave you more than one option. As great as Uncharted 2 is, it's about as linear as they come.

Let me correct you, because you need correcting. I'm not a whiner at all. I love Uncharted 2 and it's now my favorite game this gen(finally taking down MGS4). Everything I said was what I think could make Uncharted 3 even better than Uncharted 2, not to bash on it. And yes I things to say about other games as well, point being I care about games, and I want developers of great games to succeed and improve over the originals.

I mean who wants to do the exact same game over and over, if you want that go play Call of Duty or something, and get off of my blog.

Bottom line is you are whining like a spoiled little gamer. Just read your own comments. How many times have you typed "I want"?

"I want this", "I want that". Sorry to break it to you but ND have more than just one person to please. If you want it that bad they make your own game. I am sure Naughty Dog knows what they are doing and they listen to gamers when they think it will work.

The keys to happiness in life. Don't ask for too much and enjoy what you get.

So are we to just be satisfied and never expect improvement? The dude said he loves Uncharted 2, so is he not allowed to express a desire for new features in Uncharted 3? I GUARANTEE that devs probably love hearing about stuff like this. It's not ABizzel's fault that you were so awed by Uncharted 2 that you couldn't possibly think of a way to add to it. I guess we are all EXTREMELY lucky that you aren't making our games.

Basically I want almost every gameplay element that was present in MGS3 (except for a heavy emphasis on stealth since Uncharted isn't a stealth franchise) to be in Uncharted 3. While MGS3 was somewhat a linear game, at the same time it it had a lot of big, open spaces for exploration, and I'd really like to see that in Uncharted 3. Also, things like Hunting for your own food in the wild, healing your own wounds, and maybe a Stamina system ( just like in MGS3) is something I'd like to see integrated into the game.

I love the Linear Hollywood Action gameplay that Uncharted already has and I don't have a problem with it, but I'd really like to see Naughty Dog really expand upon the next Uncharted game, not only with just bigger set pieces and the same linear gameplay, but MORE depth gameplay wise...if the next Uncharted was done similar to MGS3, the Single Player portion could easily end up being an 20+ hour Adventure... I mean seriously, who wouldn't want that?

One of the major reasons why I'd want these kind of things to implemented in Uncharted 3 is not just because I'm itching to play Uncharted in a less linear way, but because I also DON'T want Uncharted 3 to be dubbed "Uncharted 2.5" by the media if it comes out this gen. and it's pretty much the same as Uncharted 1 and 2.

I could see why you would want Uncharted 3 to come out next gen., but usually Naughty Dog releases a new IP at the beginning of a console generation and continues ONE franchise throughout that particular console generation (PS1 era- Crash Bandicoot, PS2 era- Jak and Daxter), and that's why I think Uncharted 3 will most likely be on the PS3.

Thank you someone understand. I want more openness not open world. I want some levels to be wide open and you have to infiltrate it, and no I don't want a stealth game, but Drake is a normal person and he can't go in a military base guns blazing he needs to sneak around.

Now the hunting and healing wounds sound good, but I don't want it in Uncharted 3, that's taking too much away from the simplicity of the game. If it has all that it might as well be Uncharted Far Cry.

But I agree with you for the most part, and I want Uncharted 3 to have a longer campaign as well. 20+ hours would be nice, but being realistic it should be 15 hours.

Thank you for understanding my point of view.

with a game that has such a great story you dont need to have open world. often open worlds ruin the stories of games (GTA, infamous), but i can see a semi-open world like MGS4. you could choose to climb this way and try to sneak around or fight through them or whatever.

as far as setting traps.....the tiger thing would definetly be stupid, but i agree in the sense that there should be more animals in the game. In U2 the scene were you fight in the village with the townspeople was epic....make more scenes like that. when you said you could throw a propane tank and all the badguys run over to surround it....that seems unrealistic. i could see throwing a rock to make a single or two gaurds investigate but making much more just seems unrealistic.

the co-op should be expanded with more upgrades/perks. more customization

i dont care if they even change anything from U2 and just make a new story and new mulitplayer maps..i would still buy it day 1, but hopefully they find a way to make it an even more epic experience

Once again setting the game in an open world isn't what I was getting at. The MGS4 approach is more of what I was getting at. But I'm starting to think about the open world Uncharted more, everyone is saying you can't have open world and a good story, that's bull. It's just that no one has done it yet, so why not let Naughty Dog try it. I think Naughty Dog would do a great job at it since they know the focus of Uncharted IS on the story, and they would let fans down. You guys are acting like Naughty Dog is some common developer. All they really need to do is have a world map of the entire area that let's you see where you're going, and a compass that shows where you are and where you need to be going. They open world shouldn't be huge like GTA, but big enough where it feels like you walked a little while to get to the next area. But anywho I'm fine with the linear experience just open some stages up more.

The tiger thing was just a set up. I think wild animals should be in the game.

As far as the propane tank its realistic, because the guards are on duty, and if they hear a sound someones going to go check it out. And when they do you shoot it from someone and boom there goes one of the guys. Then the others will know you're there somewhere and come looking for you. That's as realistic as you can get with AI especially if they group up and look for you.

As far as online I hope that most of the problems are handled with U2, since most of them should be.

Why do I have a limit on how many comments I can make on my own blog?

8 - im sorry but
your suggestions are pretty lame.

open world is a big no (even the mgs4 semi open world u mentioned)
this is supposed to be a linear story that has one outcome just like a movie. also open world setting would murder the potential great graphics uncharted 3 could pull off

traps you mentioned is also kind of dumb (theyre not needed at all)
i (and most ppl) like the shooting gameplay and dont want to replace it with tricking guards to get by

the setting change is an obvious thing that will have to be changed for uncharted 3

the running thing u mentioned isnt needed either since Drake is supposed to be careful. plus running away from gun fights in uncharted would be boring

Climbing mechanics like infamous...was the one of the worst u mentioned. Drake is not a superhero and can climb everything. he's a muscular man who can climb only certain things. this game is supposed to be realistic dude.

i agree with multiplayer though.

no offense man, but im glad ur not on the uncharted team deciding what should be in the games.

8.1 - Wow.
"also open world setting would murder the potential great graphics uncharted 3 could pull off" - So you think that MGS4's graphics were hurt due to it's semi-openness? That just reeks of ignorance.

"i (and most ppl) like the shooting gameplay and dont want to replace it with tricking guards to get by" - Don't speak for "most ppl" when you don't know anything about "most ppl". Perhaps "most ppl" would like more than just shooting in their video games.

"plus running away from gun fights in uncharted would be boring" - Who the hell said you were running from a fight? It would be nice to be able to get to cover quicker or run to grab ammo faster. I guess you haven't played the game on Crushing, though.

"Climbing mechanics like infamous...was the one of the worst u mentioned. Drake is not a superhero and can climb everything. he's a muscular man who can climb only certain things. this game is supposed to be realistic dude." - This was the dumbest comment you've made. If you've actually played Uncharted then you should've realized that it would take an INSANE amount of strength to be able to climb the way Drake does. The guy literally uses his arms to jump up ledges. I don't know if you have ever rock climbed, but the amount of upper body strength needed to do something like that as much as he does would be incredible. There is absolutely no excuse for Drake not being able to climb things like trees, or the countless buildings with ledges that for some reason he just couldn't grab onto (thanks to the linearity of the game).

"no offense man, but im glad ur not on the uncharted team deciding what should be in the games." - No offense man, but you didn't offer jack sh!t as a suggestion. All you did was try to tear down someone else's suggestions. I feel sorry for the people like you and nycredude. You are the same people that deserve the same Call of Duty and Madden games every year.

People keep saying that the open world aspect would take away from the story. So you're telling me GTA 3 didn't have a good story, MGS4 didn't have a good story. I mean come people a story is good, because of the characters and how well it's written not because a game is linear. All a linear game does is keeps the pace of the game constantly going. And the only reason an open world game doesn't have the pace of a linear game is, because no one has ever attempted to do it. Instead all the developers went the GTA route and stuck with it.

If everything stayed the same we wouldn't be playing video games and we'd still be afraid of great beam of light from sky (aka the sun), and we still praise the almighty Zeus for gentle storms and Gaia for letting our crops grow. Evolution is necessary. And While I love Uncharted 2 I don't want to play the exact same game with slightly better graphics. I want to play a game with an overall better experience just how Uncharted 2 improved on all areas of Drake's Fortune, by overhauling the stealth and climbing mechanics, working on screen tearing, locking the game at 30fps, and more. They evolved the game to make it what it is, because had they didn't Ucharted 2 wouldn't be getting as much praise as it is now.

8. your suggestions are pretty lame.

Ok that's your opinion

8. open world is a big no (even the mgs4 semi open world u mentioned)
this is supposed to be a linear story that has one outcome just like a movie. also open world setting would murder the potential great graphics uncharted 3 could pull off

Ok if Uncharted 3 comes out on the PS3 its not going to have a huge overhaul in graphics anyway. It's going to look better, but not like you're trying to make it seem. And MGS4 had an amazing story. It was also a linear game, however, it had branching paths that hid the linearity in the game, so why would Uncharted be any different if Naught dog took the same approach. Exactly.

8. traps you mentioned is also kind of dumb (theyre not needed at all)
i (and most ppl) like the shooting gameplay and dont want to replace it with tricking guards to get by

This is an option to expand the gameplay. They have the option for stealth and this expands upon that. Obviously you don't use stealth to being with seeing how you prefer the shooting so how would this affect your gaming experience. It wouldn't

8. the setting change is an obvious thing that will have to be changed for uncharted 3

Agreed and since there's usually a jungle in Uncharted Africa seems like the next locale.

8. the running thing u mentioned isnt needed either since Drake is supposed to be careful. plus running away from gun fights in uncharted would be boring

What does running have to do with being careful, and since when is Drake suppose to be careful? If anything it'll add to the stealth gameplay, for example, if you run around enemies will be alerted whereas if you walk or trot you could sneak up on enemies more. And running away from a gunfight is the choice of the gamer, so how is that boring if you don't want to run then don't. And I'm sure there's been a time in multiplayer where you're about to die and what do you do. Roll, jump, and run to get away until your health returns, so you're contradicting yourself, because at least for me it's engaging trying to get away from someone who's chasing you.

8. Climbing mechanics like infamous...was the one of the worst u mentioned. Drake is not a superhero and can climb everything. he's a muscular man who can climb only certain things. this game is supposed to be realistic dude.

So realistically I can climb a giant gold rod all the way up to the ceiling without getting tired in the temple where you flash the lights across the room in the single player campaign, but I can't climb a dresser in a room or a freaking tree. Yeah completely realistic. I'm not saying he should climb a everything, just objects that make sense. If a ledge is within reach I should be able to hold on to it, but you can't in Uncahrted 2 unless you're meant to.

8. i agree with multiplayer though.

8. no offense man, but im glad ur not on the uncharted team deciding what should be in the games.

And yet I'm the one who's actually been to Insomniac Studios, Sony's Foster City Studio about 15 minutes from my house and (I actually know the people who work there, see them during every AES convention, and personally know the manager), and Sony Santa Monica. I personally know 2 guys who work at Volition (Red Faction developer), and a professor at my college worked with EA for 15 years. I've written 16 movies, hundred's of songs, 20 games, 10 electronic concepts. Oh and I already work as an audio engineer/ singer/ songwriter, and I've just been signed to an affiliate group working with Jive records meaning I'll be working for Sony starting December 2009, since Sony does own Jive records. Yeah I guess I shouldn't do anything creative that just doesn't seem like the field for me.
