Cage Annoyed By Heavy Rain Misconceptions

NowGamer: Speaking exclusively to NowGamer, David Cage admits that there's one misconception floating around that truly gets his goat.

"It's definitely when people think that Heavy Rain is 'just a bunch of QTEs'" He goes on to say...

1.2 - You "do" what you do in any game
you play it. You traverse the environment by moving in a direction you're character's looking. You make a button based selection as to what you want your char to do. The QTE's only come in during scenes in which it'd be impossible to manipulate what's happening on screen with the controller. IMO, they did it in a very clever way. It appears every function is included, including the six axis controls.

Personally, I'm looking forward to this one in a major way. This is one of those games you show someone to disprove the stereotype about games being nothing more than gratuitous violence.

1.3 - Did no one play Indigo Prophecy?
If there's any confusion about what Heavy Rain would be like, just take a look at Indigo Prophecy. That game certainly used QTE's, but it didn't rely on them. Indigo Prophecy was a fantastic adventure game and I imagine Heavy Rain will be very similar, which is a good thing!

darkride66, nothing like people disagreeing with a reasonable statement and having nothing to say.
Bubbles up bud.
I as well am sure Heavy Rain will be similar to I.P. and it IS a good thing.
:)

It looks unique, deep, visually astounding, and thought provoking.
I'm eagerly awaiting this game.

Well I did disagree and question if Darkrider himself played IP. Sure you could walk in some areas but the only way to progress thru the game was qte. To say it didn't rely on the qte suggests one never played the game.

I just didn't want to start an arguement because I think IP was insanly awesome and I'm looking forward to Heavy Rain but I'm not gonna lie to myself saying that qte's didn't rule that game hand over fist.

1.6 - @ Lifendz
I agree with comment, and like u I am greatly looking forward to the whole "Heavy Rain experience". But I see what some people are coming from and when I say some people I mean the casuals mostly.

To them they see it as just QTE b/c those are the only parts that has been shown to them. I know there is more to it like exploring/ talking to NPC/ etc. But to the Uncharted/God of War/Ratchet and other adventure Fans, they need more then that. I for one LOVED the Shenmue games; and that led me to Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit. So I know I am going to love this game; for its storytelling driven experience. But people hated on Shenmue and claimed it was a mono-toned QTE ridden dry experience (and that game had actual fight/brawls based on the Virtua Fighter engine too). They hated on Indigo Prophecy because all the action parts were in QTE with detective work/exploring on the side.

To those people, that is not enough to hold them over for paying full price or playing through a 10+ game. So unless there is some other mechanic that has yet to be shown from Heavy Rain that is non-QTE/non-exploratory based; other casuals gamers will just view Heavy Rain as a beautifully done QTE with exploring.

Which is understandable, but a shame as well.

1.7 - I really don't mind QTE's
as long as they are done right. What I mean by this, is that the buttons are not random, rather they are contextual like some of Indigo Prophecy's were. In the part of IP where you had to mop up the blood on the floor, you used the analog sticks in a circular motion that made sense. In other games that have shoddy QTE's, the button presses are completely random and don't fit in with the action on the screen. God of War was a great game, but the QTE's in it, IMO, were pretty shoddy. Spiderman 3 was a horrible game all around, and the really really crappy QTE's didn't help much. The one's in Ninja Blade were a slight (very slight) improvement, over GOW and Spiderman, but they still sucked.

As long as the QTE's are done correctly, I don't see the problem with them. Take a look at games that do them wrong, and games that do them right, and make them fit in with the action on the screen, and there should not be a problem.

Most of the people who say "it's nothing but QTEs" are just being pretentious hypocrites.

I mean, consider how the gaming media worships Shenmue as a revolutionary and underappreciated game. "Bawwww! Bawwww! Poor Shenmue didn't get the credit it deserved. Bawwww!", yet they never once consider that Shenmue is "just a bunch of QTEs".

Most of the outspoken people in the video game industry are idiots. When you look at their statements, it's easy to see the contradictions.

I'm sure HR will be something else. Looking forward to it. Damn the haters.

Indigo prophecy (by the same people) had a few very annoying QTE based action sequences but the vast majority of the game played like an interesting kind of point and click adventure. Given that they seem to have discarded the silly Simon says mechanics of Indigo prophecy's action sequences I'm really looking forward to this one.

thank you! IP was like a 3d point and click where the cursor was your character, and the qte's were extremely heavy handed at some points, imo. i actually recently popped in my copy of IP in anticipation of heavy rain, remembering having a good time with the game. i was sadly disappointed, and it pretty much killed my anticipation of this game, though im still waiting to see exactly how alike the two will be.

This guy is starting to sound like that guy from Silicon Knights (creator of Too Human)... defending his game a little too much. Heavy Rain will be a great experience and most of us should enjoy it... let the naysayer talk their crap... constantly defending your work before release just turns off people and validates the opinions of people who never even played your game.

Exactly-he hasn't taken ten years and bawled at people on forums over how they'll eat their words when they play his game eiother-he's just responding to some very lazy jourbalism, imo, and is right to do so. Why should people say something about his game to belittle it when it isn't really true?

Yes, there's QTEs it's undeniable BUT they're done very well and innovatively and should require a little more timing and a lot more thought than the usual cues to press the button schtick does.

It's a great looking and different title and the kind of thing I'm veery impressed that Sony have the balls to support.

Cage is defending ACTUAL ATTACKS. This is not a preemptive defense...this is a defense based on the fact that the forums are FULL of ignorant gamers claiming that ALL THAT THIS GAME IS...IS QTE. There is a HUGE difference between that and the Too Human devs. The most of what was heard in the forums about that was IT BETTER BE GOOD CUZ IT TOOK SO LONG.

Here is a dev that really want to do something different with a game that treats gamers as adults and push the medium to new heights and yet kids are already complaining that it's not shooter number 1 million that you must shoot/cover/shoot throughout the whole game.

HR is AO. Kids need not talk about it because they are not suppose to play it.

Well, I've played a part of the game in a gaming show ( http://www.n4g.com/up/22205... ) and so far, it was just investigation and QTEs. I don't doubt about Heavy Rain's quality, because Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy was already great, but QTEs seems to take a big place in the game, just like for Farhenheit / Indigo Prophecy (despite there were not "that much" QTEs in the game).

Quantic Dream just need to show more footage, and more footage without any QTE.

I agree. No matter how you say it or what you say no one will listen. Even if the game gets high scores across the board people will still scorn it. You see what he doesn't understand is that these days gamers are not the smartest people in the world. You don't have to be a genius to play Gears of war or Halo or even Fable or Morden Warfare. You just hold down the trigger and keep moving until the other guy dies. No one wants change or innovation. Why else do think that they made Halo and Street Fighter the same way every time? Because if you change the formula everyone will drop it like a stone. This game is just like Okami, Psychonauts and Viewtiful Joe. Great games and ideas, stupid gamers.

You're so right it hurts mate. The example, recently, which best shows this trend is the constant whinging over the different controls in Killzone2 until they (GG) stupidly cabed and altered them for the people who only really wanted to play COD anyway!

The weighty controls had been perfect in the beta(about the best, most impressive one I ever got into)because they were different and gave the game it's own feel and personality but many, at release, weren't prepared to learn anything new or different and it's always the same. It REALLY winds me up-I don't mind being able to map your controls to different buttons etc but when it's part of what makes the ghame what it is it should stay and rough if you don't like it. GG spoilt the game for those who really liked it only to pander to those that, mainly, were always going to be off at the next COD.

If Killzone2 could be too different what chance for HR? It's really sad, imo.

7.2 - @ mastiffchild
My problem with Killzone 2 was the fact that they removed cover from the multiplayer. If they did that, then they should have removed cover from the campaign mode. By having one mode include cover system while the other mode doesn't, the entire gameplay has changed. And what's worse was the fact that we had to change control layout if we switch from campaign mode to multiplayer (or vice versa).

8 - i remember all the noise about qte's from 360 fans talking crap about god of war.......
Prior to its release ninja blade was 'cool' in the way it used qte's then it came out and showed us how NOT to use qte's. There was a deafening silence from those same guys holding pitchforks....wonder why

Its MS whole mantra anyhow and it spreads down to its devs/customers of the fanboylike inclination... Dismiss what you dont have...Lord what you do have even if you now lord what you previously dissed.

You can almost apply that to the whole of MS and the guys that work closely with them....just sayin

Yes, bring on Shenmue 3 (or release all 17 chapters as one retail game). If they ever release another Shenmue game I would give a crap what system it was on. In fact, I wouldn't even think twice about dropping money for 2 systems to just get it. Acutally I would by a new system, trade it in, and buy the exact same system again if it meant a another Shenmue game in my possession.

So yea.....bring on another SHENMUE!!!!!!!!!!

Its really never been done before. A game has never let you have so much choice. Up until heavy rain the only choice was between good and evil and thats not how life is. In life you sometimes have to make choices that you dont know how qill turn out. That is heavy rain. Real choice that will test who you really are. Im glad this game is realeasing for ps3. 360 fanboys will probably bash it because its not a generic fps shooter but this is something special.

Idk if it's jealousy as games witjhout much gunplay and action aren't usually big hits on the 360 anyway and even on PS3 where games(exclusives) sell fairly equally across the genres I don't know that HR will find anything like what even titles like R&C sell.

MS, though, would NEVER support such an outsider as Cage's game and those of us willing to try new things should really thank God that Sony, at least, do occasionally push decent budget dollars at niche titles like this-it's the kind of thing that could surprise us all and move the industry forward a lot quicker than investing in another Gears, Halo or Killzone to be fair.

I don't see that many PS3 heads buying HR and would imagine far fewer sales on 360(if it were on that console as well or instead)-so I think the disagrees were more about a perceived attitude of yours towards 360 fans in general-when I think you were really talking more about the different demographics at heart. Of course there are fanboys on either side that just like to upset or wind people up when all they're doing is looking forward to a game. Anyone intelligent enough to be jealous of PS3 getting this game(meaning they'd like it) would usually be too bright to do something as vacuous as press the dis button and offer no argument, imo.

I get Cage's ambition but when it comes to the gameplay aspect of the game, all that the gamer is focused on doing is QTE this and QTE that while controlling the camera view and speed of the character with the analog stick. It seems like a formula for a snore fest.

Prove me wrong Cage but for now, that's what's bothering many people including myself.

But why is that "bothering you", when all articles that talk about game play say that is not what the game is going to be like? With as much aversion the developer has to being labelled nothing more than a QTE game, do you think it's likely that they would really release a game that is like that?

Really? Which article has stated that the gameplay isn't heavy influenced on QTE's? All known footage so far has been seen using QTE for story progression and the main gameplay's priority.

If what you say is true then I blame Cage above all for him not knowing how to advertise a game in a way that does not make you believe that the main center focus of a video game is X type of thing.

Oh btw, have you played Indigo prophecy? The game had an already scripted path depending on the inputs you put on the controller.

I do like the concept of Heavy Rain but the draw back for me is the design in which it is heavily based upon.

Being realistic all you can possibly do to et an idea is pick up a copy of IP/Farenheit and give it a go. You shouldn't be disappointed and it shouldn't be too dear to buy(hot one last year for under a fiver in Game preowned IIRC)and is prolly the only way you'll get even a clue what HR will be like-just don't invest too much brain power into the ending sections and their story as it goes WELL off the rails after being fantastic for 70% of the way through.
