Metal Gear Solid 4 is a Fractured War Game
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the latest installment to the Metal Gear Solid series. As a fan of MGS, this game was a must own. The cliffhanger left in MGS2 was the main reason I was anticipating this game. I wanted to know the answer. How will Kojima pull it off? I didn’t care for the reviews; I ignored the spoilers and kept counting the days until the game’s release. Now the game is on my hands. Did Kojima deliver with his latest game?

Let’s get this out of the way. The boxart is terrible. Whoever thought it was a good idea to put Snake’s old face on the box with in-game graphics needs to be fired on the spot. I pop in my game into the PS3 only to be greeted by an install. The install process was about less than 10 minutes. It was pretty entertaining watching Snake smoke and reading what was on the screen when the install was going on. After that, I start the game. The title screen was well done. Definitely great filled with an amazing song. Alright, after that, the game starts out with some commercials. These are pointless, and you can’t skip them.

After those dumb commercials, the game begins. You are Old Snake or Solid Snake if you like, located in the Middle East looking for the one and only, Liquid Ocelot. Your mission is to infiltrate the warzone, where the PMCs and rebels are fighting. The opening cutscene was shown were Snake, in an Altair costume, riding in a convoy filled with terrible, repetitive dialogue. Snake repeats the same thing like 3 times in that same cutscene . After that, you are able to play the game. Of course it is short since Otacon yells at you to go under the truck. It takes about less than a minute to do that. After that, another cutscene. The game feels too scripted. After the cutscene, you are able to control Snake again, but only for a minute or two. You are greeted to yet another cutscene. The Geckos, which are like bipedal Metal Gears, crash the party. With no great weapons, the only choice you have is to run away. The game takes off from there. The game is divided in five acts. Between the acts is an install. It gets annoying after a while.

What I first noticed is some changes they made from previous installments. The controls were changed, and they work really well. It is easy to use, and it’s more user-friendly. The game got a western-make over. Whether you like them or not is up to you. The gameplay is more action-oriented compared to the previous installments. Another thing was the Octocamo. This is a dumb idea and takes away the fun of stealthing. It requires no skill at all to blend to your environment opposed to Snake Eater in which you had to choose your face paint and camo. Besides that, the AI is pretty dumb. The MGS series had some great AI, but this one was lacking. They were dumb as rocks. Their vision is also terrible. I’m right in front of them, and they can’t see me. You can also take sides in the war that is going on. If you do, it makes the game very easy to stealth in. When they see you, they just ignore you. No need to fight or stealth your way. Another thing is that the game is too linear. You press start and the map tells you where to go. Pretty pointless. It takes away the fun from exploring the environment. In the past series, you need to find your way to the destination. Another addition they did with the game is drebin points. Terrible, terrible idea. The game will not force you to conserve or wisely use your ammo. You run out of ammo, no problem. Call Drebin, who offers gun laundering services, and buy some ammo for your weapons. Ran out of ammo during a boss fight? No problem. It takes away the challenge of the game.

The graphics are amazing. Definitely the best I’ve seen this generation. The character models are amazing. While it might not have amazing textures like Gears of War or something, it is still pretty amazing to watch. The environments are well built. I’ll only talk about the well-known Middle East environment since I don’t want to spoil it for the others who haven’t beaten the game. The details on stuff are amazing: falling rocks or rubbles from the ceilings, movable pots, etc. The cutscenes are amazing to watch. Some of the best I’ve seen. In some cutscenes are little flashbacks you can watch. It is a brilliant thing, and just brings a smile when you remember those past events.

The music is pretty great. Fits very well in the type of situation it is at. While it may be the weakest from the series, it will definitely make you turn up your TV volume. The sound effects are top-notch. The gun effects, the explosions, etc. are very well done. It definitely feels like you are in the warzone. The voice acting are some of the best this gen. My only complaint is Old Snake’s voice actor, David Hayter. He sounds very awful. You can barely understand what he says. All he does is mumble throughout the whole game.

The game includes many returning characters from previous installments and new characters. I won’t tell you who they are since I don’t like spoiling the game, but you’ll notice those familiar faces. The new characters are awful. Drebin has no point being there. He has no personality, and he is accompanied by a stupid monkey who likes smoking. The B&B Corps, who are the new boss groups, are a total joke. They have no personality. After you fought them, Drebin calls you and tells you their life story. Who cares? I killed them already. Do I need to feel sympathy for them? They pale in comparison to the Cobra Unit, Dead Cell and Foxhound. The boss fights are pretty good, but they feel they’ve been done before from the previous games. The final boss battle is an epic battle. It’ll bring so many memories. Also, I won’t tell you who hooks up with whom, but two familiar faces get married. It is terrible. They hurt the characters, and it is one of the worst ideas to ever emerge on the Metal Gear Solid series.

The story is terrible. I enjoyed the previous stories since it was well written and definitely made you replay the game to understand the story. Newcomers most likely won’t understand the story in MGS4. As a fan, the story didn’t hook me until the second half of the game. Either way, the solutions or answers to many unanswered questions were terrible. They were just an insult to people playing the game. I'll say this, one certain thing is pretty much the answer to everything. Once you find out what that is, you'll just feel disgusted or disappointed. The dialogue is awful. The same thing is repeated again and again. The game is too cutscene heavy, and that’s not a great thing especially since the story is terrible. The storytelling is awful. Someone should tell Kojima that there are other ways to tell a story other than 30 minute cutscenes. The drama, for the most part, is funny and pathetic. This was only one part that I almost felt like crying. The amazing plot twists were lacking. There was a huge shocker at the end that it made me cry because it was just stupid. The game also tells you what Outer Heaven is. Once I found out, I died a little inside.

The game also has online. The max number of players supported is 16. The online is region-locked which is a bummer. Quite frankly, it’s either a hate or love it thing. First of all, you have to sign up for a Konami and game ID. It’s a pretty stupid process. Why couldn’t they let us use our PSN? You can customize your characters and guns. You can only have one character. If you want more, you have to buy them at the Konami store. That’s right, there are not on the PSN store. The same thing goes for other stuff such as expansions. The game modes include team deathmatch, deathmatch, capturing, sneaking, team sneaking, base and rescue. There are a nice amount of game modes that surely you’ll find one that you’ll like. The game has five maps at start. There is only one that stands out and that is Gronznyi Grad. The others are terrible. Map designs are the most important thing in a multiplayer game, and this one disappoints. They are lacking in design. The body damage is terrible. It takes a lot of shots with the shotgun to kill someone. The game is filled with glitches and lag that it kills the experience.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is a huge disappointment. Metal Gear Solid games are legendary, but this one was lacking in the brilliant story, gameplay and dialogue. The game clocked in around 14 hours. I only played 5 hours of the game and spend the other 9 hours watching a mediocre movie. There are emblems you can get, but the game is pretty boring that I just can't find the motivation for it. The online is a mess. Kojima turned something so brilliant to something broken. Metal Gear Solid 4 is a troubled war game.
Ups
Amazing graphics
Good music and sound
Improved controls
Downs
Too many cutscenes
Storyline and storytelling is bad
Online is a mess
Rating Comments
10 Graphics
The character models, environments and everything else is amazing. The best this gen.
9.5 Sound
The sound effects and soundtrack are great, so go buy yourself a pair of speakers.
7.0 Gameplay
The roots of the game has been mostly taken away. It is more action-oriented and with the new additions, it makes the game easy. Everything has pretty much been done before in the MGS games. The controls feel a lot better.
5.5 Fun Factor
The story is terrible and there is very little to play. If you like watching a bad movie with a few gameplay in the middle of it, then this might be fun for you. Most of the time, I was yawning over the terrible story and my controller sitting on my lap.
4.5 Online
It is a broken mess from the Konami ID to the glitches to the uninspired maps.
6.3
Overall
(out of 10 / not an average)

First off saying everyone has no personality doesn't make it so. 2nd off if you don't like the story that's fine but the fact is that it ties up almost all the loose ends in the series which was no small feat considering the amount of them there were. I personally had no problems with the story at all except for maybe Otacon's acting. You are of course entitled to your opinion but I can't help but feel you were a little bit to harsh on the game.

PLAY on a difficulty HARDER THAN EASY. Really plz. The AI is very good... unless you play on easy. How can you say that pausing that game every 5 minutes in MGS3 to change your camo to what ever it told you to is better than Octocamo. Did you PLAY Mgs3? The online does suck. I was a newcomer, but I knew enough of the story to say it was 10/10 story. I don't think you have actually played it... at least not all of them. There are a few things in your review that sound copied from official reviews. Some things are also inaccurate. Drebin has no point. WFT? You need to buy weapons. I don't know how you couldn't hear David Hyter. I have a 200$ T.V and no speakers except the ones in the T.V. and I could hear him well. There is still stealth in the game. It does have more action, but if you play on a HARDER DIFFICULTY, then you will see how stealth matters.

Come on... 6,7, or 8. any thing does not belong next to MGS.

7 - This review is just so poorly written...I'd even go as far as to say its 'fractured'.
Plus. You know something. Five word sentences are annoying. Maybe its just me. But I don't think it is.

I know one thing for a fact though. You are clueless. Like really clueless.

This review is a mess. I give it a 3/10. You should go back to school.

P.S. Did I mention your writting style is really annoying already? Because it really is. Very annoying.

I do find it strange that you claim this game has too many cutscenes and a terrible story, yet it's that exact formula which made you a fan in the first place. There is more gameplay in this game than MGS1 and 2 combined, along with that obviously comes a lot of cutscenes.

Ok, the ending sequence goes on for nigh on an hour including the credits but they have a lot to wrap up.

For what it's worth, few people will disagree that the online service was flawed at best, but the game types aren't too bad, I haven't played it that much myself so I can't say too much about the online.

11 - *Spoilers*
Well I like to thank most of you for acting civilized unlike that one guy who keeps writing 5 word sentences. ;)

Okay first thing, the nanomachines are the answer to everything: why Naomi doesn't die of cancer, Vamp being the way he is, why Snake and the others get affected by the SOP, etc. It really was terrible. Before you fought the B&B Corps, you knew nothing of them. There was no real reason to fight them. Compare them to Dead Cell or Fox. You knew each of their strengths, their backstories, etc. You knew what you were going to expect when you fought those bosses, but not here.

The drama was pretty funny. Otacon crying over a one night stand is the lulz. The story didn't get interesting for me until I met Big Mama. She told us who the patriots were, but paramedic doesn't seem like the person who would take part of that unless she had a change of heart. If you look at her in MGS3, she was an innocent and sweet person who didn't like the idea of animals being hurt.

Also each chapter was located in different places, and I didn't like that. In the previous games, you had some missions you had to do like diffusing the bombs or etc, but not there. Once you beat a chapter, you are taken to another place. There is no freedom of exploration like the others.

MGS1 - 3 had a very nice balance of cutscenes and gameplay, well maybe not 2. I love those games, and I'll review them in a few weeks, maybe sooner. I played the game in Solid Normal, so the AI should be great. I do agree that pressing pause and changing camos can get annoying and tedious in MGS3, but it worked out great. MGS4 felt more like a war game than a stealth game. To each his own.

1. But that's the point, it's neutering super human abilities showing them as trick of technology, another example is Fortune's ability to avoid bullets is a trick.

2. The B&B Corps were Liquids personal army, essentially. You don't hear anything of them because he plucked them out of troubled, non-military pasts and made them fighters. Not to mention, people who meet the B&B don't generally survive, so there's no reason why anyone would be able to tell you much about them.

3. If you loved someone, wouldn't you cry over their death? Not to mention, Para-medic is Dr. Clark - the one behind Les Enfant Terribles, keeping Big Boss is a coma and the Cyborg Ninja experiments. Her "innocence" if her flaw, if anything, she's probably easily manipulated.

I agree with

Bosses were lame
Drebin Point System was lame
Challenge was lacking (for shooting/siding with enemies, stealth was great)
Graphics were great
F***ing annoying installs

I disagree with

Game length. It took me 22 hours on my first playthrough. That's a LOT of gameplay no matter how you spin it. My brother took 28 - so there you go.
Cutscenes - have you seen BETTER cutscenes in a game? I thought the cutscenes were refreshing - they might not be of the best movie quality but it's miles ahead of everything else.
Story - You obviously missed the point - but this is more a reflection of the game not being able to clarify the major plot points in a dramatic fashion; instead having a load of pointless dialogue. The twist at the end when you find you've been duped ONCE again by Kojima - RAT PT 01 you know what I'm talking about - is brilliant.
Online - I thought the online was absolutely brilliant - but the Konami ID thing put me right off it (and no doubt stopped it from being the success it could have been).
"Short-sighted enemies" - on the harder difficulties they can see further - but you want them to be short-sighted otherwise it would be too difficult! They've ALWAYS been short-sighted because it's a GAME. There's no way that you'd be able to do it if they had human-level intelligence.
Camo - Octocamo is 1000x better than the system in MGS3. I would prefer that there was no camo - the way snake pressed up against the wall was so lame and he stuck out like a sore thumb.

One problem I have with your review is that you say the gameplay is bad. This is simply not the case. The gameplay provides the player with the option of CHOICE. I love that I don't HAVE to conserve bullets and sneak around, and I love that if I don't know where to go and I just want to get on with it, I can follow the dotted line and get on my way. I love that there are 5 difficulties, so I can play through it for fun or for a challenge, with any number of differences in how the game plays depending on the difficulty you choose to play on. Enemy A.I. is incredible and unforgiving on the higher difficulties, so it is unfair to criticize the A.I. if you only played it on the setting that is NOT SUPPOSED to present a great challenge.

If you don't want to buy things with drebin points, then DON'T, you can play through this game the same way you played through all the other Metal Gears. That's the beauty of it. It gives the player the option to play the game the way they'll enjoy it most. Sure there's a dotted line telling you where your next objective is, but there's one in Halo, in Fable 2, in Crysis, in countless other games, and it doesn't detract from the experience, now does it? The game is even MORE open-ended with huge environments to explore as you see fit than any other in the series. Just because you have the in-game option to know where you're objective is doesn't mean you can't explore, find hidden items & music tracks, etc., find the sneakiest route around, or just ignore the dotted line completely.

I think you went into this game wanting to hate it, so you did hate it. I don't doubt that you played it and disliked it, but I think it was your attitude that defeated the experience for you. If you want to enjoy Metal Gear Solid 4, you can easily enjoy it, for it has the best level designs, A.I., customization, and options of all the games. Oh, and if you thought the first 3 had good storytelling, but didn't think this one had good storytelling, then you're just kidding yourself. Because all the others had ridiculous long cut scenes, weird humor, strange characters, and idiosyncrasies in Kojima's techniques. This one was even more polished and got its story across with more cinematic and entertaining cut scenes, and didn't rely nearly as much on horridly long CODEC conversations to tell the story.

Oh, and the Octocamo sucks? You do realize that you CAN custom-change your camo, right? Again, it's the CHOICES. You don't have to let the Octocamo do all the work for you if you'd prefer to get down and dirty with the camo yourself. But in my opinion, the Octocamo is the coolest addition to the entire game, because you're fooling yourself if you thought the camo system in MGS3 was anything other than a chore. It was cool at the time, but you claim it required skill? Hell no, it didn't require skill. It required going to a menu and picking the one that the game told you was the best one. That isn't skill, it is, I say it again, a chore.

" Just the fanboys are the ones that call this game a classic. "

If that's the case then it goes both ways, dumbass. You could say the same thing about Halo 3 and Gears of War. Perhaps the same about LBP too and pretty much every other game out there.

Besides, why does everything have to do with fanboys and corruption? Why can't people like and rate their games however they like? I didn't read Homicide's review because I haven't had the time to finish MGS4 yet, too much work, and I don't want spoilers.

There's this one gamer I know which hated Little Big Planet. He didn't get it. He doesn't really understand it, he says it is for little kids and he is no fanboy at all. He hated Halo 3 even more, but he was in love with Halo 2; you know why? Because to him halo 3 is halo 2.1. However, he loved Metal Gear Solid 4. He also really liked Gears of War 1 and 2. He also loved the Resistance 2 beta.

Why can't everyone have their own taste? I mean I don't even like Halo but I have friends that do love Halo because there's always a lot of people playing it. I tell them "but the story sucks, how can you like it?", and he tells me "who cares about the story? I don't play the story, only online". To each his own.

Remember reviews are just that, and that numbers are just that; to me games are an art form, not just an entertainment medium or a toy, and that's why Scores don't do justice to games. Even games like Too Human, Infinite Undiscovery, Lair and Haze have something rescuable that some people may just like. And just for that, their score becomes worthless.

Does anyone even listen to movie reviews before going to the cinema? How about for books? I personally love Woody Allen's movies but most of my friends hate him. Hell, Woody's movies are usually universally acclaimed by intellectuals and critics, but the populace doesn't understand his movies. I don't doubt that some people that like Spike Lee hate Tarantino and viceversa.

Not only that, but I don't doubt that there are lots of people that like Kubrick's movies for different reasons, and that hate Spielberg for different reasons. Perhaps some movies (or games) are liked by more people than others, but since when is the quality of an art form a democracy? Not only that, but I can accept a metric that tells you if reviews are positive or negative; after all, it doesn't estimate "how good" or "how bad", but simply the numbers of bads and goods.

What's the f***ing difference between a 2, a 3 and a 5 out of 10 anyway? That's just bullsh1t. Scores are subjective and averages don't do a game any justice, as each and every game is unique, like in any other art form.

Sadly Firstknight, you take reviews way too seriously. How old are you anyway? Considering you supposedly had a PC in the 80's (i.e. way ahead of the curve), aren't you around Mart's age, like the late 30's? If that's so, then how sad that you have to be such a fanboy at such an old age.

18.1 - Since were talking about movies...
I'm still not watching Uwe Bolls films they suck no matter how you look at them. Hell they don't even have anything to save its appeal.

On the review though...
It's his opinion it just that the way I see it MGS4 is a masterpiece and the fact that it's story can be so complex not all people could understand it or on Homicide's case saw it differently than most.

On some people who have commented...
First of all FirstKnight is just simply pathetic yes every one is entitled to their own opinion but stating this game sucks because of homicide's reviews is pathetic in the sense he says "from what I heard" which shows that he must have only listened to Xbox fanboys or has only heard Homicide's review since last I checked MGS4 had over 90% on metacritic (and not the user review). Other than that I hated that canadianguy's comment that Xbox fanboys are the scum of the internet. Let me make it clear, all fanboys are scum regardless of what they're representing be it Xbox360 or PS3.

Again, Konami has solid evidence of "bought" reviews. Free trips to Paris for the unveiling of MGS4 with a catered sushi bar. Not to mention the reviewers were "supervised" on what they can review. They were restricted on reviewing the long cut scenes or the annoying loading times.

Anyway thanks for the honest review. Don't let these angered sony fans get to you. Some of these kids take it to serious. It's like talking bad about MGS4 is like talking bad about their mothers.

P.S.'Reviewers' couldn't mention the length of cutscenes or *installs* (load times were fine, and many times the game went from cutscene to game seamlessly; you obviously aren't used to that in 360 games though).

So what? It only became such an issue because they couldn't do it, if Konami hadn't even talked about it the reviewers would have most certainly mentioned those two things and moved on.

Or are you saying long cutscenes and installs should bring the game's score down? LOL

The fact is: Kojima let the players DECIDE how they want to play MGS 4. If you want to be Rambo-like you can, if you want to be super sneaky you can. Don't want to use healing items? Don't do it. AI is 'too dumb'? Turn up the difficulty. You think Drebin's shop makes it too easy? Then don't use it! It's not like you are forced to or something.

Its like those people about b!tching because taking a taxi made GTA IV even more boring then it already is: well duh, don't take the freaking taxi then.

Whatever...
