Sony "Big Bang" Conference on Oct 12

Well folks, it looks like the funky, PS3 price-drop happenings you've been hearing about lately may very well be dropping all over the place. Apparently, hot on the heels of a new filing with the FCC, and various rumors concerning an approaching $399 console, Sony (which has heretofore denied the chatter) has announced a "Big Bang" press conference to take place on October 12th, where many believe they will intro a new, lower priced 40GB console. With nothing big slated for the holiday season yet, and Xbox 360 price-cuts and bundles being bandied about, it makes sense that Sony would come out swinging before holiday shoppers hit the stores. It's truly a good time to be a buyer.

How has he not been banned yet? At least the other fanboys of this site show SOME worthy posts with realistic beliefs and/or articles...

How come you were MIA on that news article a few weeks back that stated 360 ISN'T dead in europe but in fact IS doing better than the PS3!? OMGHI2U!!! Want proof? Go look at vgchartz for europe (and then come back here and say they suck and are not a reputable source, cuz it works against your ideals). In Japan the PS3 isn't doing so hot either.

To be on topic, $399 will move the consoles but it might be too late to take anything but 3rd place this round. It, if anything, would help boost slagging BD sales. I know I'm tempted to get a PS3 for $399 not just for gaming (or lack thereof) but also for BD as I'm neutral on the format but am biased more towards HD DVD. Sony needed a pricedrop like this 6+ months ago. We'll see if it's too little too late. Both as a game console and as a BD player (THE BD player the whole BDA actually backed up), it isn't doing so hot...

they need to do something with the price drop though.

halo 3 is still gonna damage their sales, remember what happened in july.

they need to issue some bundles and let the world know the ps3's price has dropped, if they don't, it's gonna be the same story.

ms is gona counter it with their new falcon rrod 360s that may cost less(idk).

so they need to do something extra, they need to hype up foklore or eye of judgement.

I still find it amusing that PS3 sales are neck and neck with 360 sales at this time in its life cycle despite the PS3 not having any games (or so they say). With this price drop, the release of MGS4 and GT5 (and multi games like Assassin's Creed and DMC4), and increasing Blu-ray/HD demand, there will be a clear winner in a year or two. Spoiler: it's not the Defective Halo Box Mk.II.

4.1 - Where are you getting your data from?

The 360 and PS3 on a global basis are far from "neck and neck"... The PS3 stands at about 5M in hands of consumers and the 360 about 11M in hand to the consumer. If they do drop to $399, I suspect a big surge, but will it be a "gamer" surge or a "movie watcher" surge? I think Sony is making a mistake with this big a drop now. They should do it when the library is bigger in my opinion.

But sales since PS3 was released. Both PS3 and Xbox 360 have sold about the same. The Wii however has sold more than both put together in the same time frame.

I think even Sony concedes that Xbox will win the US this round. PS3 will do slightly better in the rest of the world.

I mean, Xbox has a 5 million unit lead in the US and it’s still outpacing the PS3 in sales.. even before Halo 3 even hit the shelves. If Sony starts to catch up, MS will simply do another price cut.

360 is out selling sony, and thier growing out, but only hardcore gamers play the 360? please I could name games you never have heard off. What makes them hardcore, because they play hours and hours on halo or gears of war online talking smack like a middle schooler? the 2 biggest ammo x360 fanboys have been using so far is theps3 has no games and it's too expensive (which can be arguably true depending on your game taste).

but the ps3 has been selling on average about a third of the x360 numbers in america and almost the same amount worldwide and that's without any advertising or coherent marketing strategy.

every gamer i know in real life are just waiting for a price drop to get a ps3, the halo effect is gonna last a couple of month

but if the 399$ price point come to fruition for the ps3 things are gonna be really interesting this holiday season.

7 - IT seems

that sony was just waiting for halo 3 to drop before they started doing anything. It seems that I'm hearing more about the upcoming games on this system more than anything else now. It's like they were waiting for all the hype to die down. Now they are starting to move. I really hope they can squeeze KZ2 in this christmas I know it's a long shot but I can atleast wish. R & C is another game that looks amazing along with Haze and Uncharted if the new Socom comes out I'll be overwhelmed. Seems like things are getting better and better.

I think a price drop is huge news, because most of my friends are just waiting on the price to fall down. A price drop will boost sales like crazy, only if they advertise it and show commercials about it. IF they throw in that with a game like MGS4 coming out this year or showing off a new killer game, dang I Can't wait to see the sales charts... lol

I kinda wish I had waited to buy my PS3. I bought it as soon as the initial rush died out. I've been happy with it, but there have been little in the way of releases over the year, and I could have saved some money to put down on a new DX10 card for my PC.

Xbox price cut really wouldnt, since price isnt the reason they arent being bought. Neither is games for that matter though.

Sony mustve known the new model would be leaked sooner or later via FCC. Im thinking theyll announce their price drop+ sony AAA title that we havent thought of, atleast being released this early.(If it is a fully sony funded FFVII remake bundled, then even you xbox fans have to admit that it will be end of the line for Microsoft.)

Microsoft is able to buy its way into sales because of third-party software. If sony funds it (like msft did with ninja gaiden 2) then MSFT only weapon against the PS3 is taken away.

i agree they are probably a little bit desperate at this point. With all the negative media attention and the slow sales with fewer software titles than the cheaper opposition(down side of releasing last). However considering we all pretty much knew once the 60GB was phased out, the 80GB would drop to 500 and this would jst be a case of them releasing a more affordable sku. Hopefully with wifi i believe thats a huge sell.

I heartily disagree. The wifi is not very necessary at all. I usually have mine plugged in because it's just a faster connection.
Sony did claim at first that you'd be able to upgrade a 20GB to have the features of a 60GB (wifi and card readers). I have yet to hear confirmation of this, but if they do have a wifi addon, then it would make sense to ship the 40GB without wifi for a cheaper price. It's a nice feature, but many people don't have wireless in their homes, let alone want to play games over it.
Just my 2 cents.

WiFi is also used to support the PSP which helps PSP sales as well. Believe me they have this all figured out. I actually bought a PSP Slim just because it can be used with the PS3 as a pretty good MP3 player and the games are fairly interesting especially the Final Fantasy ones.

You have to remember that in the recent months, Sony went through some changes in their leadership over the PS3. Perhaps the changes we are seeing are based on another mans vision for success. Kutaragi had a different vision and now that vision is gone. In comes the new vision and success may seem more around the corner than it did for the company before. It's not a shock to see it if in fact there is a price drop and another SKU coming.

Look what happened when they announced the price drop on the 60gb models... That put Sony on top of Amazon and other internet sale sites for many days and even weeks.

11.7 - Halo 3 sales dropping

The number 1 seller on Amazon is the game Halo 3 and so >>WAS<< the Xbox 360. Halo has some short shoelaces though since the 360 console is now back in third place.

WII console in lead at first (forth on the chart)
PS3 console in second (sixth on the chart)
Xbox trailing the rear (eleventh place on the chart)

I do think its going to add +100,000 consoles above last months levels, but most people that wanted Halo 3 already had a 360 IMO.

and you are right , when that launched there were no good games for that console until gears came out , i know bc i was stuck playing condemned and junk games like that for the first year, then came gears of war with its 6 and 1/2 storyline campaign , maybe the ps3 dont interest you bc it dont say microsoft on it, but there are 100's of millions of gamers waiting to get a ps3 , and for the record the ps3 launch kicked the crap out of your 360 launch and the wii for that matter, i still havent played my wii since i beat zelda back november last year, you are just some fanboy that has been bought out by microsoft

I guess i am...the only ratchet and clank game i bought was on the psp..not until MGS4 and GOD OF WAR 3 come out im interested in the ps3...but not before with all the problems they are having...oh BTW I waited a year for both the Wii and xbox 360...and im quite happy with both. why get a ps3 when most games are multiplatform and better looking on the cheaper console. Why would MS drop the price of the 360 when it had no competition? That'd be a terrible marketing scheme. And if you think hard enough the PS3 will become slimmer and lighter like all technology. They will charge the same price as they did before, but for this *new* PS3 Slim. Also if they decide to sell different colors they will be able to charge a certian price for a longer time just because people see it as *New*.

Right after TGS I said I still thought there would be a price cut by the holiday season.And I know that this doesn't confirm the drop but I know Sony is not dumb.In the console market (since PS1) Sony has a good track record.Even if Oct. 12 doesn't introduce a price cut I still say price cut by holidays.A 40 gig model would be a better buy than the old 20 gig same for the 80 gig compared to the 60 gig.Sony should also tell people how the PS3's hardrive is a standard 2.5" HDD that can be easily upgraded.
