Editorial: Resistance Requires More Respect

There are certain games that are kinda like the Rodney Dangerfields of the game industry; they just don't get the respect they deserve, regardless of how much praise they receive from the critics.

It's true Resistance is a good series, and Insomniac Games are very creative, original, and make great games. Its a shame the series doesn't get the respect it deserves

Resistance is a trashy franchise, no originality, retarded story, and above all and most importantly crappy gameplay. If one played these games one would come to the conclusion that the developer never played or made a fps in their lives. Such a crappy franchise, they need to do the sensible thing. Star from scratch on a totally new franchise and learn from the mistakes that are Resistance 1 and Resistance 2.

Its the only sane thing to do, when Resistance 1 sold more than twice as much as Resistance 2 on a smaller install base, then you know your in trouble and need to dump the franchise.

Nick, dont you ever get tired of being a douche.

Resistance is awesome. One of the best launch games ever made. The story was a great tweak on the tired WWII genre.

The weapons, setting, AI and graphics were all great, and the framerate on part one is still one of the smoothest console FPS's ever.

But youre so busy hating everything Sony you wouldnt notice any of that.

1.3 - Resistance is an excellent concept
...just wasnt executed as well as it should have. This was surprising considering the overall top quality of the R&C series.

There's nothing wrong with copying the best from CoD4, Halo, Gears, BF:BC, Warhawk etc.

Bring on R3:MW.

1.5 - @socomnick who only comes out to bash anything ps3 related.
you said "If one played these games"

How bout applying that to yourself. I do not believe you actually played these games or any game at on ps3 and even if you did try them you didn't play them enough to know what your talking about since you clearly do not own a ps3.

Actually i would be surprised if you ever played any ps3 game. After reading some of your comment about your unfavorable mindset about anything ps3 , One would think that your hand might get burned if you try to hold a ps controller.. You know holy water and stuff.

Yeah...right... is not original because is not the stereotypical big macho space-marine (how gay sound that?), retarded story because the character fight monster that used to be humans, and no space aliens, crappy gameplay, ehhh I'm tired, so NO! is not crappy

R:FOM deserve a lot of respect, is an excellent game, I can't say the same about R2, not saying is bad, but is not better than the First and I'm sure R3 will be better than R2 if the game is based on the First

I agree 100% with this article. I don't understand why practically everyone around N4G and other gaming communities I visit talks trash about Resistance 2. Personally, I love R2. The co-op is the best of its kind, and the campaign was epic in my opinion. I still put it in my PS3 and revisit Idaho and Chicago because those two levels are just so gorgeous and fun. In fact, the only two games on the PS3 that I've beaten more than 3 times are Demon's Souls and Resistance 2.

R1 was really good game, excelent and original concept, few errors in excecution, but was a launch title so can be forgiven.

R2, rather than sticking with R1 style and improving it, they listned to too many hating fanboy media complaining about it,
saying R1 was dull (cos they were used to halo vividness) so R2 was more vivid, but took away from the gritty feel

R2 also has too much f**k yeah, team america style, also taking away from the gritty feel of R1 (done to please the fanboys of gears)

why the hell did the weapon wheel go?

R2 was technically better than R1 for multiplayer, but also something was mising from R1, not sure if its just the maps, or gameplay, but just didn't seem as good

R2 was good and kinda original in the co-op, but would have been good if it also had the campaign co-op as well.

lets hope R3 has the feel and atmosphere of R1, thats what made the game so great, i din't like the original for technical ability. it was the story, the feel, the atmosphere, the gritiness. al of which went in R2.

1.10 - resistance is a great series.
R1 was amazing. the weapons, big battles, and story were what made it for me. unfortunately, they took the weapon wheel and big battles (there was only 1) out of R2. also, the story seemed to progress as smoothly. it seemed too convoluted in #2. and with all the mention of russia in #1, i was really surprised that Insomniac did not address any of those R1 questions as to what WAS going on in russia.

i enjoyed R2, but not nearly as much as the first game. they need to bring back the "weapon wheel", have a few more big battles with the chimera, (instead of focusing on larger single enemies) and focus more on the story. plus, come up with a better final boss. (that last fight in R2 was lame.

don't get me wrong though.......these are just some thoughts on how to improve R3. regardless, R3 is a day 1 purchase.

hey, does anyone have any thoughts on who the main character in the story will be if nathan is really dead?

Insomniac should of had more respect for Resistance themselves. They sold over 3 million copies of the original so what do they do? They go and change everything to try and be more like other shooters.

I've always thought Resistance had the respect such a franchise deserved so I'm surprised by all these articles. The game plays great, the Chimera are badass, GREAT weapons and the game also looks great.

You don't see some cheesy scenes of extraterrestrials ligthing up cigars to humans like in ODST, when I think about great games on the PS3, Resistance is always there together with MGS4, Heavenly Sword, Folklore, Warhwak, Uncharted, etc

What all these articles mean with "respect"? that kids love it? Kill their parents because they don't get to play more co-op after midnight? Because there are no lunch boxes for kids with a Chimera on it? Because is not mentioned as "evil" and a "threat" to society like GTA by some lawyer?

The game got great scores, the ones that deserved, you can't demand perfect scores for the game from all the sites either, those are for games like MGS4

But from the main sites Gamespot, Eurogamer, IGN, Gametrailers they got scores from 9 to 9.5...so I don't get it

were you the guy from Dallas that won it or the guy that won it in a raffle.

I won the Vinals ( Captian Qwark, Ratchet, Clank) just because I showed up early. Was in the raffle of 6 guys and won them. I was so stoked when I won them, but no onwe wanted to help carry them to my car, except this one guy. It was an awesome day.

3 - the sequel moved faster and felt more like Call of Duty- but even so, the improvements were clear. And besides, since when is a Call of Dutystyle unpopular?
thats the godd@mn point Resistance fall of man wasn't trying to be a freaking COD clone it was it's own game, but with resistance 2 it felt so generic. hopefully Resistance 3 will revert back to the way Resistance fall of man was.

oh and if you're going to disagree with me at least make valid points. And because they're will be a person who'll call me out and say "you never played Resistance 2!!!" kindly stfu and look me up.

The problem with Resistance 2 where fanboys and xbots. They complained about the AWSOME cutscenes the low points the scary elements... watch a review for R:FOM and you'll realised most their complaints aren't valid but they where fixed in R2.

I don't care is R2 was slightly worse(IMO it was better) because they did something new with it. CO-OP was awsome, COMPETITIVE was awsome, the singleplayer has tons of replayability.

R2 bored me so bad I gave it back to Slave2dController's azz in quite a hurry lol, I might give part 1 a shot, I might do a blind buy like I did with *sigh* that oh so boring R&C FTOD, I just stopped playing that one, holy cow.

As of this writing I do not think Resistance deserves more respect.

Its also kind of funny all these Resistance articles have started popping up after I just started to play them again. they are really good games and deserve more respect. i find a lot of people useing it as a scape goat/ sacrifice and put it down in order to lift othere ps3 games up at times. resistance series is top notch and the graphics are really good and the gameplay and feel is just so different from the fps i have played before.

Iv got all the games insominiac has released this gen and there all good. I just played the R and C clank demo and i already preorder the game. people need to respect devs like this and mnc2007 comments like yours is not respect.

9 - i wrote an article on my site
months ago talking about how Resistance is the Underdog RPG franchise.

it's pretty much saying the same thing; that Resistance gets no credit for what it does right, and what it brings to the FPS table.

people are so quick to label Resistance as "generic," but, if it is, then please point me to the OTHER FPS that has weapons that can shoot buzz blades that richochet off of walls, a pistol that fires a secondary round that lodges into enemies and can then be remotely detonated; a weapon that shoots through walls and puts up a protective shield; a weapon that fires a "tag" that will "paint" an enemy so that all subsequent shots from the gun veer towards the tag; a weapon that shoots a ball of electricity that flows outward like Ball Lightning, ripping through any enemies that get in the way. please, what other FPS does that? i'd like to know, so i can call Resistance "generic" also. /sarcasm

also, Insomniac actually took their alternate WWII seriously. there is so much backstory and detail put into the world of Resistance it's rather impressive. if players actually took the time to invest in locating the various intel documents in R1 and R2, you'd find a very rich, detailed history concerning the Chimeran invasion. in Resistance 2, the intel really sheds insight into the history of the main characters.

but apparently in this day and age, gamers need everything spoon fed to them, and don't want to have to bother to search for those sorts of things.

Resistance is a great series. i personally think Part 2 was better than 1 in a lot of ways (while being weaker than 1 in other ways, but overall an improvement in every way).

in either case, i can't wait for Resistance 3 to be revealed next year, and shut up all the naysayers. maybe with the third in the series it will finally get the props it deserves.

it is unique, surprisingly original, and refreshing to play.

how gamers can hypocritically call for new and innovative ideas while clamoring for every game to be the same (people whined that Resistance wasn't enough like Halo THEN complained that Resistance 2 was too much like Halo: make up your f*cking minds people), look the same, feel the same.

people b*tch because Killzone 2 doesn't control and feel like Call of Duty, and yet they complain that it's also "generic" and doesn't bring anything "new" to the table (i guess the Badge system, which lets you mix and match badges to create a character that suits your playstyle isn't enough).

i guess if it's a PS3 exclusive, it's "generic," but it's perfectly fine for games like Fable 2 and Halo 3 to remain stagnant in terms of gameplay creativity, sticking to the formula that works (although Fable 2 changed the Fable formula TOO MUCH in my opinion).

if a PS3 game sticks to the formula that works (ie, Ratchet and Clank has ALWAYS had top notch gameplay), it needs to get docked points, but Gears 2, and ME2 can be EXACTLY like it's predecessor with minor tweaks and it's suddenly the most revolutionary, amazing things ever.

i wish games were judged on how much FUN they are, instead of this constant cry for innovation. NEWS FLASH: Innovation in EVERY. SINGLE.TITLE is damn near impossible in this day and age. i settle for good ol' fashion fun gameplay, even if it's from an established series like Ratchet and Halo. if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Insomniac has learned a lot from Resistance 2, i just hope they don't try to bend over for a lot of the ungrateful f*cks that won't like ANYTHING they do. Resistance 2 was a GREAT FPS game, and i was riveted from start to finish, and addicted to the co-op and MP. i didn't care that it was different from R1, and thought the change was risky, yet worked well for the story they were trying to tell (establishing how damaging the Chimeran invasion was on a grander scale; the smaller setting in R1 didn't really convey how serious the situation was. in R2, the cross-country setting DID).

Thats because it brings nothing to the table.

Not a single innovation or even feature that any of the resistance games accomplish. They failed hard, at least with ratchet games you have good platforming and wacky weapons even if the franchise is milked to death , believe they are on their 16th ratchet and clank game.

Gotta admit, socomnick, for a troll you've got courage. Figboy listed a bunch of things Resistance did well - including unique weapons, the weapon wheel itself, excellently done co-op, etc. etc. - and you answer it by...

...well, you don't actually *answer* it. You just say what boils down to, "Nu-uh! Is not!"

Most trolls would at least *try* to dispute *something*, but you - no. There's a kind of Zen perfection to your vacuity. Well done, at least for that.

10 - Resistance was a solid (launch) FPS...
...but certainly not genre defining. Resistance 2 was not a failure but for me needed to be grittier and dirtier but I'm not sure that would have been possible given the art style that was used. I did also miss the narration to help one level flow into the next.

Would I buy R3? most definitely - if the story was good.

While I agree...Nick is a douche...

...I think he's on to something.

Insomniac really DOES need to make a new FPS...or IP, in general.

The Resistance story, while good, isn't fantastic like Bioshock or Metal Gear. (Maybe pulling MG into this is a little unfair.) Still though...

...Insomniac has the talent. They just need to hire new writers.

but it wasn't as good as it could have been. Plot was kinda broken, weapon wheel wasn't there and I felt the voices of Hale and the other guy were off. Overall it was way too different from R1.
