Calling All Cars Servers To Be Shutdown

Looks like starting January 14, 2010 Calling All Cars Servers will be offline for good. An in-game message breaks the bad news. At least we can still play this game offline, it is a blast.

Had a blast playing this game back when it was released. Too bad the servers must come down but when nobody is playing it... Then there is no reason to even bother with the servers. The game is officially dead online.

This was a brilliant game. One of my best memories was winning a game online against 3 others driving completely in reverse

I tried to tell people this would happen eventually on PSN. This why I pay for Live. As long as Live is around games will always be playable no matter how old they are, except EA games.

I doubt that Microsoft keeps every game server operational despite it not being played. Have they made a promise to their customers stating so? If not, then I wouldn't count on them not shutting down servers in the future.

XBL is peer to peer, therefore there are no servers for MS to shut down.

I wish PSN had an option for P2P.

First off, I went online in that game a few times in the past couple months. There would be 0 to 2 people online max. Shutting down the servers might effect like 100 people tops in the entire world lol. And why would I pay Live to use my bandwith? I agree Sony should allow the p2p as an OPTION though.

I don't care if only two people are online at a time I own this game and now I fell like it would pointless to keep it on my HDD. Just so you know P2P servers still use matchmaking servers to connect players. Calling All Cars didn't even use dedicated servers.
Judas you have no clue what your talking about.

What are you people going say when its a game you actually care about?

Am I the only one who got a little nervous when logging into Demon's Souls to see that disclaimer that servers could be shut down Spring 2010 should Atlus decide?

It freaks me out a bit to know that the DS experience as I know it - Blue Phantom help, Black Phantom break-ins, helpful player messages, and instant health boosts via players recommending you messages - could end as early as next year. DS offline is not the same game.

I might actually pay to play DS online -- whether for dedicated servers, or a cheaper price for match-making servers and P2P gaming.

Now I only have a 360 silver account. I don't need a gold as all of my friends own PS3's and the online gaming is free. Suddenly paying for the privilege to play Demon's Souls online would make me a hypocrite.

And if I'd pay for one game, uh oh...

Enter the PSN Platinum member account. Only $25 - $50 dollars a year

Dangerous stuff...

Now, I realize that if Demon's Souls servers shut down - it would be later than sooner. And considering DS is getting amazing reviews and the game is selling more copies than Atlus anticipated, I'm even willing to bet that the servers won't shut down until Demon's Souls successor comes along. But it does make you think...

The online literally had no lag, and everyone was so damn skilled at the game.

I still play this from time to time. It's a shame that the online portion of the game will be nixed forever. At least there is local co-op; it's a shame, however, that none of my friends are as good as I am at the game (lol).

The one disadvantage of a server based online system.

Its a shame for people that still enjoy the game.

They should re-launch this game on to the PSN with Trophies included. It would probably get more sales, especially with all these new PS3's being sold.

7.1 - Neither Sony or Microsoft has control over those servers...
I guess you forgot the uproar when EA decided to pull the plug on their "old" Madden and other sports games (basically, pulling the plug for games that were only 2 or 3 years old so they could sell more recent versions of their own sport games). I remember people claiming it was impossible because they were paying for Live, and thought all the servers on the 360 were under Microsoft's control.

Even if I was not playing it anymore, I'm sad to see this game go. I also think it's the first PSN game I bought!

a game with online features that dont work is still only half a game.
also i think its pretty much illegal to sell games that dont have all the features available so hopefully it will be taken down form PSN, have the online features removed and then re listed at a lower price (online features removed = half the price at most).

shame that PSN games which are ment to encourage online play are closing servers down servers.

11.1 - You also have games that no longer work on your 360 too!
EA pulled the servers on "old" sports games, basically forcing people to buy new versions of their old licences again, and again. I remember people who got mad because they were paying $50 a year for Live but could not longer play a 3 years old Madden online!

The only game that has servers shut off are the EA sport games. And that is because EA requires everyone to login to their servers. When they hit 3 years EA shuts the servers off.

The next server going down on XBL is a dedicated server for Chromehounds. That will happen in January 2010.

Aside from these two all xbox and xbox 36o games will have online forever. That is one advantage of p2p.

Well... the game is funny, but lack of content, lack of DLC, lack of maps and 0 support brought it to this end. And tbh i don't care, i had fun when it was out but after a while i stopped using it.
It has to be an example: "How not to support a game".
I guess other games will finish like this... sadly...

Run Dedicated servers for 3 years. And then release a patch to make it go P2P. Problem solved for everyone.

15.1 - There was no ONLINE on a NES...
So basically, if you want the same experience, Calling all Cars qualify, since now, it still works as any old NES games would. No online but still a fun game to play with friends.

18 - Advantage....
...Microsoft/XBL. I still play Crimson Skies: HRTR....an original XBOX LAUNCH title... on XBL. There are reasons XBL isn't free...and this is just ONE of them; NO games hosted on XBL servers will EVER go offline. PERIOD.

And no, RealGambler, it's NOT the same as EA shutting down their servers for old sports titles....that's just common sense.

Yup. I can play all of my original xbox games online still. I threw on Sega Gt from 2003 last week just to see if I could(sure can). I like that XBL will always be that way. Sorry to say. But XBL is still the best. I will gladly pay for it to know that I will always be abe to enjoy all of the features of any game I buy.
Sony really needs to have dedicated and p2p so people dont get stuck with a game with only part of its features.

I like how everyone is trying to justify there $50 year subscription by saying "we told you so" in some way or another. No one plays this game online, literally. I got my $10 out of this game quite some time ago and I didn't pay a penny for online.

I like that fact that I will always be able to play ANY of my games online FOREVER. p2p guarantees that.

Keep in mind that for every dedicated server game you buy for the ps3 or from psn that one day you will not be able to play it online anymore. Do you care about that? If you dont then PSN is perfectly fine for you.

I have about 500 or so games. I want to know that I can play these games online whenever I want. Again it all depends on what is important to you.

You are missing the point, and the big picture. I used that old, dumb game as an example. You clearly missed it.

XBL uses p2p for may of its games. Something the dedicated Sony crowd loves to mention. There is an advantage to this for many games. I dont need to spell that out for you do I?

Would be a shame to see this game die completely. Online mode has been very quiet, but not completely dead recently. And today it's been actually quite active, I've played with over 10 different people.

I'm hoping the shutdown could be cancelled if there's enough action on the servers. So I created a new Calling All Cars forum and I've been inviting players there. Those of you who like the game, feel free to register and lets get some games going!

The forum is at http://www.arctic-charge.co...
