One of the new features includes 'DivX VOD'. According to the official site, 'DivX Video on Demand' is a digital video delivery service that lets you rent or purchase DivX movies from any of our licensed VOD partners.

Yes, that zoom works great, and unlike the XMB browser zooms the font also to a very readable size.

BTW: Anybody noticed that a "Double-Tap" on the square button brings up the audio player menu ? Was that there before ? (In life with PS).

Hell yeah! I was wondering if they were going to implement that feature, because I hated having to get up and look close at my TV screen just to read the news articles. I thought that it was a gross oversight on Sony's part, and now I see that they've fixed the problem, making it infinitely more usable.

yeah the music player was there before, it even sorts your whole play list to pick out certain styles of music for your mood (I have no idea how they did this but it actually picks them out correctly...a lot better than WMP ::( ).

i don't use my ps3 for anything other than gaming besides I watch blu-ray sometime. I use my laptop with my 40" TV 'coz i have hdmi output on laptop to check game trailers and videos or watch netflix instant movies. Sorry, I don't get excited for extra features that ps3 offers. I like to see more dedicated server to play games.

Movies, music, photos and games. One of the best apps available has to be Tversity. (www.Tversity.com) I use this for streaming movies from my PC to my PS3 wirelessly. It runs just about any format, divx or other. It's free and has a ton of other features.

Ok here is something for you. There are tons of sites that stream divx videos (Legal and Illegal). Honestly that crap you will get from Netflix is viewable by those sites weeks faster and in a far superior Divx quality. So we can watch them for $0 a year. X-Bot feel sad, its ok.

After reading up on DivX VOD, this feature needs a little explination...

It seems like this is just a way for content providers to use DivX as a distribution channel. Looks like this is just a DRM'ed version of DivX (although rather fair about the content limitations).

Also, with the registration code required for the PS3 to use this functionality, it seems like the PS3 will be treated like a DivX certified DVD player.

I'll have to go and update my PS3 and check this out... If Sony starts releasing their catalog of movies/shows/etc for DivX VOD, then this could be cool.

Honestly the Flash player update was bigger news, but it is nice to see Sony throwing in some unexpected goodies... ;-)

Lets get real. The best thing about this update...PORN. Now, with the PS 3 you can watch all the p0rn you can handle on your LCD TV instead of the 22 inch monitor. Not all the sites work, but sites like Tube 8 works like a charm. If you guys know any other sites, please list them.

more than that i think it also will probably be the method of digital media for blu ray. you know like files that you can play on your computer and ipod that come with a dvd movie.

sony partnered with divx. blu ray movies with divx code mean instant playback of digital media on your psp, ps3, pc and mac with blu ray enabled players....................... ................

we probably wont see the entire benefit for a while.. but the road to unified media is a good thing...

I don't know if I'm the only one who's noticed but this FW Update completly breaks my favorite feature and one I felt was soooo special about the PS3!

When you play a Video or TV Show / Movie off the HDD which I do all the time, and then push the PS Button, it Pauses the video!!! What the hell! Before the update you could freely move through the XMB, check your downloads, change your settings etc while the movie played in the background! IT WAS PERFECT - NOW ITS BROKEN...

I love the improvements in this update but the choice they've made to disable playback of video while in the XMB is a travesty! Please somebody hear my prayer and restore this beloved feature...

I can see your problem but still i think it a good thing that the video you're watching pause once you hit the PS button to access the xmb, in this case you don't miss out the part/scene when you're in the middle of accessing the xmb. So I think there no problem with that is it?

another benefit not to forget

microsoft has divx function but its really just older mpeg2 format capability

newer divx formats are only for authorized partners. like sony..

developers are allowed to use divx for in game streaming. so lets say your character walks into a room, there is a tv, the feed to the tv can be updated at any time the dev wants and will be of good quality due to the divx compression capability...

why does sony insist on giving my ps3 value all the time? i feel like my good fortunes are a burden on others.. i dont know them but... i know my happiness burns someones soul out there..

its a bonus to blu ray. some dvd's come with a digital version of your dvd movie that if insert the dvd into your dvd player in your computer or otehr device will copy the movie for your already transcoded.. no need to rip a movie

same thing here just divx may be the format that comes along with our blu ray movies..

its not a digital download its a digital transfer/copy. and technically speaking ms bots dont want to talk about digital downloads.. you still cant get around large downloads when sony has warhawk, gt5 prologue, siren, socom, etc...

you have............... xbla titles and DLC?.. you can count tekken 6 which will be a PSN/xbla title.. but then again .. tekken 5 was a PSN/PSP title

anyway speaking on codecs.. divx is partnered with sony.. so microsft gets the old codecs from divx that work for everyone but not the new certified files. also part of the problem with microsoft and blu ray is blu ray chose not to use microsofts HDi menu system.. thats another story..

but the codec vc1 (a microsoft codec) is used by some studios, not all. its a good codec and many studios like it.

sony and divx are trying to introduce something different as an option is all..

its not for us to debate, cause it really doesnt matter that much. a standard is a standard across the board..

What is Digital Copy? It's a product (DVD or Blu-ray disc) that includes an additional digital file of the film or TV show. You can transfer the file in just minutes onto your computer or portable media player

so its just a file that comes on the blu ray or dvd that can be transfered to your iPod or PSP or LOLZune

we dont scoff at digital downloads, we just dont use it as an argument to discredit physical media
