Sony Responds To December NPD Sales, Seems Pleased

Sony isn't going to let a sales drubbing from the Wii and Xbox 360 this past December get it down. The company did quite alright, by its own accord and thinks the best is yet to come, so says its NPD Group sales response. Sony points out PlayStation total hardware revenue was $714 million for the month, which is not pocket change, by any means and a figure that surpasses both Nintendo and Microsoft's hardware revenue.

* December 2007 was the biggest month for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3) since launch, with 798K hardware units sold in December; this represents an increase of 60% over December of last year. With upcoming titles like Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Devil May Cry 4, Burnout Paradise, and HAZE as well as current momentum for Blu-ray, there is a great deal of enthusiasm for the PS3 as we enter the new year.

* PlayStation total software revenue in December was $822 million, sales nearly doubled compared to last month's sales.

* PlayStation platforms had three software titles in the top ten list across all consoles for the month of December: Guitar Hero III for PS2 sold 800K units, Madden NFL 08 for PS2 sold 655K units and Call of Duty 4 on PS3 sold 522K units.

360 shipped 11million first year and sold about 9 million first year.

Sony sold 2.6 million in NA and is aroung 1.5 million in Japan.
I doubt Europe has moved 5 million Ps3's

Last I checked, the PS3 was at 3.59 million in the US; 3.84 million in Europe; and 1.79 million in Japan.

Funny how the PS3 has almost 50% of the 360's lifetime sales in Europe and it hasn't even been out in Europe for ONE year yet. While the 360 has been selling for two years.

In 2007 2.56 million PS3 were sold in the U.S, NOT 3.59 million. Lifetime sales are 3.25 million. NPD numbers posted on IGN. But then again IGN are "Xbots" right. Isn't that what is popular on this site.

Its been stated on many an occasions, but you seem incapable of understanding: NPD = US sales figures, not world wide sales.
No one can dispute that the 360 is hugely popular and outselling the PS3 in the states - the NPD figures plainly show this.

However, if you do want to look at world wide sales, there is much more momentum in PS3 sales which is what offers some balance if viewed in a world wide context. Making a statement on world wide numbers and then linking to a report of NPD, would suggest you either don't know the difference, or you simply don't want to.

As for your denial that the PS3's first year world wide sales matched or beat the first year sales of the 360, this has been established on this site and many others for some time - the figures don't lie and they are easilly varifiable. God help me for linking to VGChartz but take a look at this graph which shows worldwide units sold with the release dates aligned..

..Its clearly shows the consoles 'neck and neck' with the PS3 starting to pull ahead. Of course if the PS3 ever expects to catch the 360 numbers it needs to pull ahead even further, but all the figures show that the PS3 DID match or exceed the 360's first year sales. It's also a fact that the 360's first year sales were without competition, but the PS3 was hampered by bad press, few games and compettiton from the Wii and the 360's amazing gaming line up.
To sell as awell as it did, might be thought off as a miricale, given the circumstances!
Indicators suggest that theres a big swell in peoples intention to buy the PS3 in its second year, but the 360's second year has seen it sell less than its first, despite impressive software sales and an amazing line up.
The states is 360 land (well its wii land actiually) and I can't see that changing for a long time as the 360 is still gainign a lead with each passing month! But one of the interesting things about this generation is the differences between the continants, and Europe clearly has the PS3 gaining ground at an alarming rate.

Who will 'win'?
I don't know and I can't really say I care, as I own and play all the machines. It's clear that none of these platforms are going to 'die' and thats important - if you pay good money for a machine theres nothing worse than having the support dropped too early. If I had to bet money on who will have the biggest world wide install base in 5 years, I'd bet on Sony and think my money was safe, but its a not a life or death opinion thats needs to be defended untill the last blood!

So chill dude - learn to see NPD as US only, and open your eyes to the bigger picture, don't let Fanboys befuddle your mind!

The ps3 has followed the exact same sales trend as the xbox 360 too if you align the launches. Expect in 2008 however to see ps3 sales shoot up in fits and starts because there are alot of system sellers coming this year. And i mean real, proven, big system sellers

almost everyone expected the x360 with its biggest game lineup and lower price point to slaughter the PS3 this holiday season but it hasn't been the case. In fact the outsold ratio has been reduced further in NA. Factoring in the worldwide sales the x360 and PS3 are neck and neck despite the fact that RC i believe is the only proven franchise for PS3 compare to Halo3 and PGR4 on x360. Alot of x360 fans after September were predicting a 3:1 ratio in favor of the x360. Every PS3 fans were hoping for a respectable PS3 resistance and it did. Better than expected.

Sony did not expect the PS2 Userbase to migrate immediately over to PS3 when it came out. If they did they would have stopped support for the PS2. I am sure sony expected more but to expect the bulk of the PS2 userbase is ridiculous. Sony on numerous occasions reiterated that the PS always start slow especially in its first year and then accelerate its second year. The reason why they accelerate in the second year is because its the second year that Sony lower the price to mainstream price and also when they start releasing the heavy hitters. The majority of the PS fanase are mainstream gamers. Gamers that are not hardcore or casuals but somewhere in between and they normally don't buy the system when its out like the hardcore but rather they wait until the price is right and the games they like from previous gen are out. Sony knows this fact. It is why they have won 2 console wars in a row. Sony knew that the change over from PS2 to PS3 is a gradual process otherwise as i said before, they would have cut support for PS2.

Sony isn't stupid when it comes to making a big decision like that because if they had dropped support for the ps2 in the 1st year of the ps3's launch that would have been a fatal mistake on Sony's part because at the moment the 360 has more content than the ps3 in terms of games so that would leave the ps2 owners looking in the 360's area and abandoning Sony's brand. So instead they will keep supporting the ps2 until the ps3 has its exclusive content ready for them to make the switch

Whats important is the 'attach rate - how many games each owner goes out and buys. Right?

I've only looked at figures from VGchartz as they are redilly available and very easy to compare - for each week, you can easilly calculate how many games each user bought. (software sales for the week/total number of machines sold)
Since the beggining of December, the PS3 attach rate has been higher each and every week in America.
I've not worked out figures before then - I simply went back 6 weeks.

Lets just get that statement clear: Each week, your average American PS3 owner goes out and buys more software titles than your average American 360 owner. THATS A PROVABLE UNDENIABLE FACT.

Please - don't type an instant denial without checking for yourself, as the results suprised me too - but they are consistant and give lie to the oft repeated 'PS3 owners don't but software' myth. For the last 6 weeks at least, they actually buy more than 360 owners.

Sony did very well taking into account the first 7 months of the year PS3 was at a 600 dollar price point and only two or three games even worth looking at. America is the only region where the 360 is surpassing the PS3 and i think this wont change until the big hitters come out in April, May, and June. With more and more people buying HD tvs they are gonna want to watch HD movies and play HD games this will start the real sales burst for the PS3. When the PS3 will be the best option not only because its power will be fully utilized and have a game lineup in 2008 that surpasses any other console but it will also be a great way to watch blu ray movies.

Can someone tell me how many XBOXS sold during December 2007? And i'm not talking about the 360 neither.

PSP will continue to rise and generate sales and revenue because it's selling pretty damn good at a $169.99 price point. Just imagine how many PSP's will sell at $129.99 lol. And because the PSP system is so versatile it can last for about another lets say another 5 years or so?

Lets also talk about the PS3. 2007 was only a start up year for the console. 2008 is definitley going to be the Year Of The PS3 with tons and tons of games coming out. Metal Gear Solid 4 will drop in June and that alone will sell about 5 Million more PS3's. Combine that with a $299.99 price point add in Grand Theft Auto 4 and Gran Turismo 5. Resistance 2 and Motorstorm 2 OMG!!!!!!!!! Lets say Little Big Planet, Infamous, Killzone 2, White Knight Story and Tekken 6. Playstation Home bundled with In-Game XMB and Rumble Controllers back in the States. The Playstation 3 will be the Preffered system of Choice for the year of 2008 and BEYOND

Playstation 2 will continue to be around for years to come thanks to the Nintendo Wii. Why because of Ports................ And of course sometime in 2008 you will be able to buy a Playstation 2 system at the $99.99 price point =).

With Xbox 360 dead in Japan, struggling in most of Europe, competing in the UK and strong in the USA, clearly one can see that 360 is headed in a direction where its game line-up is not going to appeal to everyone, relegating itself to a very similar consumer base as last-generation, save a few innovations which improve its situation over last-gen.

However, with PS3's heavy influx of New IPs in 2007 going for highly expected sequels soon, other highly expected sequels and 3rd generation titles utilizing PS3s features such as Home, trophies, blu-ray and the cell processor to the most, the playstation franchise is getting ready to make another revolution in the market, getting the most innovative simulations anyone could think off, and again, the most varied collection of game genres available.

If that's with no games and a bad reputation after the 600 dollar price tag than it's safe to say that with AAA games like : mgs4,resistance 2, LBP, Killzone 2, ff13,and gow3 Ps3 sales will either catch up or increase so much that an early 2009 catch up to the xbox360's lifetime sales is inevitable.

Not only that, the games I mentioned sell more than in just America.

FF13 and mgs4 will sell tons in japan and america.

Why do PS3 fans always compare the PS3 sales with the 360? PS3 sold more on its first year vs the 360s first year blah blah blah. According to you guys this is SONY and the damn PS3. "The PS3 can sell without games." This is the successor to the 120 mil owned PS2s. Its a Super Computer, Blu-Ray Player, super duper console. Even if the 360 had no competion, the PS3 should sell like the Wii. Its already down to $400 and its better than a standalone blu-ray player.

PS3's competitor is also the PS2, much like when the PS2 launched it's competitor was the PSOne. There's several good games still coming out for the PS2. There aren't a lot of people who are willing to pay $400 for the PS3 just yet when you can still get a really good system with an ass load of games for just $130. This is why the PSOne lasted for so long. There were a lot of good games then, and there weren't many people willing to pay $300 for a PS2 then.

When the heavy hitters come out this year (MGS 4, FF XIII, GOW III and so on) then the previous generation of PS fans will jump over to the PS3. A lot of M$ fan boys are quick to point out that X-Box is getting several old PS2 fans, if that was the case then why isn't the X-BOx 360 constantly sold out when it's aimed at the same demographic as the PS3?
