Crysis: Photorealistic surfaces due to Texture Pack

The guys at PC games Hardware dug up another modding project for Crysis. This texture pack delivers textures for Parallax Occlusion Mapping (POM) giving the game realistic surfaces. There is now information about how much the textures affect the performance.

BUT (and this is one huge but) how will the gameplay be?

The Original Crysis was really mediocre in the gameplay department. Hopefully they'll fix that instead of just making it nicer to look at.

Yea,

Exactly how i felt. I bought a new PC just to play this game. Graphics are really really impressive, but i gave up playing half way through, i thought it bored me...

modders have used hi-res texture mods for years so nothing new. However these are possably the highest quility and detail i've ever seen.

Console games probably won't have those kinds of textures until the 9th generation. My reasoning for this is that these high quality textures were made by modders on high-end PCs about a year after Crysis. Consoles go through an evolutionary progression of hardware and the game developers never spend this much time or effort perfecting surface textures, unless they are given an additional years worth of time to just polish graphics. I think these modders may have a future in game development.

The chanaces of Sony or any company developing an upgradable Graphics chip through software is 100%, we progress not downgrade, maybe the PS4 or the 720 might do graphics 10x's better then what's been seen here.

It's not financially viable. The companies need to assess the CPU configuration in conjunction of graphics chips. It's the reason why Sony's PS3 didn't have the most powerful GPU when it shipped. The RSX was designed specifically to work well with the Cell microprocessor, and the Xenos was designed for the Xenon. If either company wants to make a really powerful graphics chip, then they have to make a very powerful CPU setup, which will cost more money. It's why consoles are always middleware.
