Have you ever thought to yourself, “Damn, I wish they’d freaking make another <insert popular franchise>.”? Maybe you pondered, “OMG, are they going to remake <insert popular franchise>!?” Of course you have—maybe once, at least. If I was punched in the jewels every time I thought even one of those sentiments, then my voice might match a chipmunk full of helium. The depressing truth is that 90% of my cravings for these sequels and remakes always disappointed me, even if they weren’t total failures. You know what the last best remake ever was? Super Mario All-Stars. Why? Because they didn’t change a single aspect of the game at all, other than the graphics, and that’s what a remake is all about! You’re remaking a game, not creating a new game. How about the best game-sequel of all time? Baldur’s Gate II. Why? Because they not only innovated the game-play, but the story was so self-contained that you didn’t need to play the first to understand the second. Before I elaborate more, keep in mind that these are my own opinions—take my examples with grains of salt.
