Why you're wrong about video game 'remakes'

VideoGamer: "When the 2002 Resident Evil movie gets re-released on Blu-ray, no-one cares. When the 2002 Resident Evil Gamecube remake gets remastered, everyone moans. Why?"

Good article imo and you made some good references. People do confuse remake and remaster sometimes as they sound the same.
I think no one is 100% wrong or right here, it just comes down to opinions. Considering the release of RE1, this time it just happens to be that most people's opinions are blinded by the number 60 + fps and is the reason they mostly moan about this RE1. As this remaster will only have 30fps.

Still I know many hate to get more remasters etc instead of new IPs.
I don't really care that much, as long as we get new PS4 games too. I'm glad we get more games even if they are remakes or remasters of my beloved games from years ago or some other great games. PS4 has been full of indies anyway, so I don't see why should this matter when our console is still quite young.

I don't remember people complaining much, when we got some PS2 HD Remasters for PS3. Also was TLoU:Remastered really needed either, although it have it's improvements or Xboxers didn't get to play it? So many was okey with that because it's the "best game in the world", but not with this RE1 because it might not have such improvements like TLoU:Re...

1990-2008 "Damn this game is awesome, the story, gameplay and characters are so cool!"
2008-2090 "Omg that rock on the ground looks so bad, what bad graphics and no 60fps...this game sucks!"
Players are hard to satisfy these days.

I for one have never understood the hate these remastered games get. I picked up tomb raider on 360 when it came out, and then I got it in the amazon deal of the day for ps4. I got the last of us day one on both ps3 and ps4.

Remasters serve three purposes, one each for the publisher, developer and consumer. For the publisher they generate revenue. For the developer they allow time to test the new system and learn how best to code for it. And for the consumer they provide an immediate way to compare the previous console to the new one. Isn't that what most of the graphics whores in the comments on this site do all day anyway? Why wouldn't you want a direct comparison for your flame wars?

Being the new consoles are so similar to pc architecture, we should all get used to the remaster craze as we will be seeing many more. I welcome them all too. Not that I commit to buying them all, but I definitely wont mind being given the option to play through some of the best games of last gen in "glorious 1080p" lol.

The only real problem I have with remasters are the price.

RedCloud883540d ago

To me, the price isn't an issue yet. With that said I've only grabbed last of us, which is really worth $50 and tomb raider was $30 on Amazon's deal of the day. I feel like $50 is fine for Remasters that are well done, after all you're not forced to buy them. I would prefer to see $40, maybe $60 if its a pack of games like the mass effect trilogy. More important than price, in my opinion, is release. Being they are Remasters and not new games entirely, companies should try to release them during our dry periods. Better yet, they could be included in collectors editions of newer games in the series.

Why do we have a new generation of consoles we have to pay $400 for when all we get are HD "remasters" and remakes? I want to play new video games, not the same ones I played over and over again from 10-15 years ago.

Not only is the market saturated with these cash grabs, publishers have the audacity to charge exorbitant amounts of money for them and shove all kinds of pre-order crap in our faces.

This is bad for the industry all around. It shows that publishers and developers are so greedy and lazy they don't feel like making new games anymore, and it shows that consumers are too stupid to do anything other than shell out money for the same handful of games over and over again.

Gatsu3540d ago (Edited 3540d ago )

You could also ask why do we get the new console full of small indie games, which I can play on PC? I'm not saying they are bad either, but I do also want new big titles for my PS4. Maybe some developers release a remaster, which don't take so much time, while working on a new title. I agree about the pre-order crap though and DLC too much everywhere.

scark923540d ago

You are not obliged to purchase the games you owned last gen, you buy the remasters that you have missed out on, though I understand if Playstation Now does get into full swing, I would view Remasters as highly unnecessary! I would prefer new games though!

Star Wars Special Edition ... I rest my case.

scark923540d ago (Edited 3540d ago )

Star Wars Battlefront 2 remaster, make it happen (I don't trust DICE) lol

Letthewookiewin3540d ago

I used to spend 100's of dollars on my PC so I could play a game at a higher resolution. So if I spent 60$ 3 or more years ago and then spend another 60$ years later to play a better version of the game I loved on a console I had anyway I'm all for it and only got hit for 120$. I'm really tired of the whining. Don't buy what you have a problem with and the problem will seem a lot less relevant.

Eternal Darkness was way ahead of its time especially for a Nintendo exclusive.

I would love to see a remake or sequel (multiplatform)

This Feature Makes Lethal Company Scarier Than Resident Evil

Games like Lethal Company end up scary because of their freeform nature, while Resident Evil's polish and storytelling ultimately make them rather tame in comparison. Agree or disagree?
