Why Did I Become A PC Gamer? Because It’s the Cheapest Way to Play

Kotaku- Stop me if you've heard this one before: "PC? Oh hell no. That's way to expensive and complicated. I like my 360 just fine."

There's something to be said for that. We've reviewed many a high powered, high-priced machine here at Kotaku, and even the peripherals can add up. $300 for an Xbox 360, with a network that all of your friends are already on, as compared to $1200 or more for a PC, seems like a no-brainer to most players. And in a way, it is. And in another way, it very much isn't.

It's simply a choice. Some people (don't ask me why) choose to spend $500+ on a friggin' tablet, and that's okay.

Are good gaming PCs expensive? Yep, they are. I spent over $1400 on mine. Some PCs are cheaper. Some are much more. But my PC is going to last me a WHILE, much longer than this console generation will last, and perhaps even next gen.

But the kicker is that PC games are cheaper, the games drop in price faster, and (with a few exceptions) PC games have limitless backwards compatibility. You know what I played this weekend? Master of Orion and SM's Alpha Centauri. Those games are OLD, but they run flawlessly on my PC. I can't cram my old NES cartridges into my Wii, nor will my Dreamcast play Sega CD games. Heck, my PS3 can't even play PS2 games.

I went from ZX81 Clone -> C64 -> Amiga -> PC. Commodore began screwing up the Amiga around the same time I started my computer science studies, so going from Amiga to PC was a natural step even though the PC in some ways felt like a step backwards in comparison to the Amiga.

Fortunately, the PC really took off with Windows 95 and since most of the games I enjoy playing aren't even available on console, it's pretty obvious why I'm a PC gamer to this day. Maybe that will change with the next generation consoles, but I think I'm more likely to supplement my gaming PC with a console rather than replacing it.

Yep. Sure, it is more expensive at first. But then you only need to replace the cpu and video card when you want. That can be years.
