Why Zelda should return to Open World Exploration

ZU writes: The original Legend of Zelda was a revolution in exploration. When game director Shigeru Miyamoto created it, he had a distinct vision in mind – he wanted to infuse the game with the same thrill and sense of wonder as he had as a child exploring forests, caves and lakes, and as a result children everywhere were completely immersed in this new world where their imagination could run wild and they could become a brave hero.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Has there been a Zelda game that isn't open world exploration?

Ilovetheps54210d ago

Link's Crossbow Training. But seriously, I don't think so. In my opinion, they have all been open-world.

WrAiTh Sp3cTr34210d ago

I was wondering also, since I haven't played Skyward Sword yet, lol.

herbs4210d ago

Skyward sword was much more linear than previous Zelda games. It was still a great game and had an excellent control method but I was let down by the lack of exploration.

abzdine4210d ago

when you look at Skyward Sword there isn't much to explore compared to Twilight or Zelda 64 where you had the huge Hyrule plain and you can walk yourself to the place you want.

In Skyward Sword it's kinda limited you fly a bird and it throws you to one of the chosen destinations. I'd like some Epona riding in the next one and a more classic aproach even though i loved Skyward Sword.

Summons754210d ago

yeah sure you could walk across Hyrule field from the castle to lon lon to the lake and back again but their wasn't anything to explore in Ocarina of Time. Skyward sword at least had collectables and the goddess stones and other assortment of stuff, just because you had to fly dosen't mean it's not open world. Once you finish with the forrest it's not like you can't go back. Wind Waker has to be the better example because it started the whole collectables and mini games scattered across the map vs in OOC where it was limited to one spot depending on if you were young or old. SS is still very much open world and going around collecting and upgrading was tons of fun

MWH4210d ago

since when it needs this "why"?

TheFirstClassic4210d ago

Well no Zelda game had the freedom of choice the first one had. You could actually beat dungeons in different orders. SS has been the most linear 3d one so far tho. Also, the sky you flew around in felt pretty empty to me.

ZoyosJD4210d ago

You could actually beat some of the dungeons in OoT out of order, you just had to get the main item out of each. I remember skipping over the water temple because I couldn't find one key.

Xof4210d ago

Skyward Sword.

And to a lesser degree, Wind Waker, Spirit Tracks, and Phantom Hourglass also had fairly closed worlds.

Zhipp4210d ago

The Wind Waker's world was fairly closed? How so? To me, it felt more dense and expansive than Ocarina's.

Xof4210d ago

Dense? I don't think I've ever heard anyone describe WW that way. It was 95% water, 5% stuff to explore... and most of the islands had nothing interesting in 'em. There was no real exploration to be had, which made it more of a 'closed world' than an 'open world'.

Sailing in a straight line over a boring ocean for six minutes between every town/dungeon does not an open world make.

Macho Man4210d ago

Macho Man thinks it never stopped, yeah, it just seemed like there was LESS FREEDOM, yeah, LESS FREEDOM in Skyward Sword cause da areas weren't connected and yer "OPENNNNN WORLD" yeah, it was the sky. BUT MACHO MAN wants to be able to walk from desert to forest, yeah, meet some characters along the way, YEAH! AND I'M FLYIN' NOW, HIGHER THAN A KITE BUT DON'T BE DOING DRUGS! OOHHHHHH YEAH!!

DIG IT!

Just because it was two different sections in Skyward Sword, that doesn't mean it wasn't open world. They say that the Surface was just a few different secluded areas. That's correct to an extent. But it felt very open. I could go anywhere I wanted on the surface as long as I had the weapon needed.

But the way I think of it is that it's kind of like any of the areas in Ocarina of Time. You climb Death Mountain. There is a Goron village in the mountain as well as the crater, Dodongo's Cavern and the Fire Temple. I could only go as far as my equipment would let me go and it was a secluded area of the map. But, the game had an overall field that split off into the many different sections of the game.

Honestly I really changed my mind on Fi with the remaster because they didn't make her interrupt your gameplay every 5 seconds, that drastically changed my views on her

Inverno77d ago

Technically she's in ToTK but obviously can't take any other form than the sword she was made into. Also the companion feature has been done plenty of times in Zelda, I don't think it'll add anything new. If anything should be brought back it should be the Minish.

Directionless Modern Zelda Should Return to its 3D Roots

Matt from We Game Daily writes "The Legend of Zelda series has gone in a different direction. One which, try as I have, I just can’t get on board with. Here is why I think Zelda should return to its 3D roots."

Amen! A good, tight, Zelda game with a focus on dungeons and puzzles. Let people have the new style Zelda if you gotta, but let us have the OoT style games too. That's not without precedent either, the handheld 2D Zelda's in the style of A Link to the Past etc have coexisted alongside the 3D Zelda's before

FinalFantasyFanatic108d ago

As much as I like BoTW, TotK, I need my traditional Zelda games as well, I could not endlessly play the open world Zelda games, plus it's harder to keep those fresher than the traditional games.

Eidolon108d ago (Edited 108d ago )

BotW was just as fresh to the franchise as OoT was. TokT was great but the next LoZ would have to move from that formula to be fresh again. There's only so much they can do with the hardware. I think they focused too much on making the world big instead impactful. I felt the world was sort of empty and repetitive in TotK, sure there was a lot to do but no more difference a Ubisoft game..

anast108d ago

I wouldn't worry too much. Nintendo knows what they are doing.

Ristul108d ago

Wind Waker had a perfect balance of open world and a cool, well hand-crafted design. Maybe try to keep the open world but put in effort to make more memorable story driven quests and locations.

Zelda Fan Brings Godzilla to Life in Tears of the Kingdom

A fan of The Legend of Zelda has recreated the iconic Japanese monster Godzilla in Tears of the Kingdom using the game's Zonai devices.

I like it would also be cool if some created Dragon Caesar in the game I would love to watch the two going at it.
