Is Shovel Knight an Early Game of the Year Candidate?

IGN:
"The classically inspired action adventure game is high up on the list of game of the year candidates already. Is it on your list?:

sobotz3580d ago (Edited 3580d ago )

Journey was one of GOTY nominee too, I don't see why this cant. But still, it's too early to shouting game of the year this and that, not reminding Aug - Nov is gonna be a blast

ZodTheRipper3580d ago (Edited 3580d ago )

Journey is on a whole 'nother artistic level, before I'd nominate this for GOTY I'd rather pick Transistor or Child Of Light. If this is the 'Game of the Year 2014' then I'll quit gaming, seriously.

Metallox3580d ago

Just because it looks like an 8-bit game it doesn't mean it can't be a very good game, comparable to other AAA games in terms of quality.

camel_toad3580d ago

I grew up on 8-bit games and loved them but I've grown tired of this fad of devs intentionally making games look like crap just to suck dry the nostalgia people have.

admiralvic3580d ago

Theoretically any game can be a GOTY candidate and conceptually win the award. However, I really wish sites wouldn't start this stuff in the first place.

Too many of our "terms" are being thrown around to a point where they lose all meaning. Take this post, they could say Shovel Knight is a great game, extremely fun or something else, but no, they jump to the extreme of it being a possible GOTY title when theres still 5 months (nearly half a year) left in 2014.

MoveTheGlow3580d ago

On principle, I agree. Pragmatically, though, with like 10 games releasing a Game of the Year Edition, nothing's that sacred. It's just meaningless talk, which is fun enough to do every so often.

So far, at this point, it is game of the year. Can't really think of any game more fun or interesting at the moment.

MoveTheGlow3580d ago

Knowing that Nuclear Throne will probably exit Early Access this year, and Wayward Souls and 1001 Spikes are already out, Shovel Knight is around my #5 or #6, somewhere near Dark Souls 2 for me. It certainly has the soundtrack of the year - Heck, of the last twenty-five years - Virt and Matsumae did an amazing job!

Haven't been able to play this yet since it hasn't released in Europe yet but for me right now Mario Kart 8 is my goty.

SolidDuck3580d ago (Edited 3580d ago )

Oh a 2d platformer, haven't seen any of those lately. I haven't played it, but is it better than mario 3? I doubt it. That only released 24 years ago. Sounds like another hipster game.

SquidBuck3580d ago

So you only play big budget games? smh

SolidDuck3580d ago (Edited 3580d ago )

No I don't only play big budget games. Bastion, journey, child of light, and transistor to name a few I loved. No mans sky by the way looks incredible. Games that have some innovation. But a re skinned 2d platformer a goty contender? As they should, COD and madden get bashed every year for not changing and innovating. But 2d platformers haven't innovated in like 30 plus years, but for some reason that's ok. Clearly I'm speaking to the crowd that loves these types of games. I don't get it tho.

You're the guy who watches a character-driven film and storms out of the theater while shouting "Well, that's no Citizen Kane!"

lonelyplayer3580d ago

They should create a kick starter to fund the ps4 and vita versions

Geekman3580d ago

I love how this game was ignored until someone said "Game of the Year."

MoveTheGlow3580d ago

Considering their success and what they've said in interviews, it will get there eventually. Until then, try it on PC! It certainly doesn't need a beastly rig.
