Game Difficulty - Challenge Accepted or Game Over?

Everyone needs to suffer a little to get better. It's one of those unwritten rules that everyone accepts, but only because they have to. Here are a couple of motivators to show why it's actually good to leave that comfort zone.

Most gamers are addicted to a challenge. Aint that exactly why we game?

Testfire3647d ago (Edited 3647d ago )

I disagree. I think most gamers nowadays are addicted to instant gratifications. Trophies and achievements to make them feel like they accomplished something other than just passing the game as a reward, and constant checkpoints so they don't get frustrated after they die. Pay to win dlc so they don't have to put time into playing the correct way.

If the majority of gamers liked a challenge, tough games would sell better than casual games, but that's not the case.

I think the harder the game, the more sense of accomplishment when you finish it. Still, if its too difficult, frustration sets in along with a good chance that you will abandon the game. Tricky balance to find.

i understand the authors frustration i'm not the best at parrying in games. not that i can't complete a game that requires it but it is a definite harder thing for me than other kinds of techniques in games. which might be the main reason it's so heavily added in games nowadays. want to make your game challenging without having to do a lot of work? just add a parry boss. (what i mean by parry boss is a boss you have to beat by parrying such that their attacks will kill you otherwise)

I always think it's fine as long as such games also have the roll/dodge panic button. But I understand the will to parry, it seems so cinematic in a fight when you pull it off.
