Introducing Thief | XPSTAR Preview

Xpstar:

Meet Another Potential Killer App for PlayStation 4

Many of you may be unfamiliar with Thief. Fie upon you for that. Fie, I say! (Whatever ‘fie’ means.) This stealthtacular sneak em’ up franchise never ascended to the heights of a Metal Gear Solid or Assassin’s Creed in the popularity stakes, but its dedicated following is rabid with anticipation for the PS4 reboot (some fans have indeed contracted ACTUAL RABIES, such is their excitement).

I hope this one lives up to the stealthiness of the other games, and also maintains the magic side of the series. The screens have shown a more mechanical world, but I still hope some supernatural elements take hold with the story (which tend to be rather eerie, Shalebridge Cradle as an example), and that we can encounter the Pagans/Hammerites.

Please don't go the route of some other stealth franchises as of late. I'm worried, especially after SE complained about the sales of their western franchises (which weren't bad at all), that they might make it appeal to absolutely everybody, and lose the essence of a Thief game.

I think I read somewhere that they took out most if not all the supernatural things from the classics. I reserve my opinion until I see the final product, but I think its a good idea to take out the magic part of it, so as people, especially the younger generations, don't compare it directly with Dishonored.

Dr Pepper3992d ago

I would rather strongly disagree with that. Just because Dishonored borrowed from Thief doesn't mean Thief should just get rid of essential components to the franchise just so young gamers don't make ignorant claims.

Besides, the magic was really quite different. You weren't teleporting all over the place or summoning assassins from thin air. It was more story/universe essential than anything, and in that, it would be worrisome if everything that made up the world of Thief was in fact stripped away to an unrecognizable shell of its former self.

I'm with Dr Pepper. The supernatural aspect is a part of Theif's identity. It's not right to remove it just because it's in another game that was made similar to it.

One of the reasons for creating a new IP is that it already has fans. These people are fans because of what Thief already is and will buy a new one expecting more of what they had in the past.

FPS + stealth + supernatural + mechanical = Thief

FPS + stealth + mechanical ≠ Thief

That's pretty much how fans feel about any IP that gets changed.

ScepticTankAvenger3991d ago

I don't mean that they are getting rid of the magic specifically because of the younger generation, I mean that they want to set themselves apart early on. With a reboot, changes like this do happen, and even though I am a little disappointed, I can see what they are doing. Like I said, final judgement reserved till I see gameplay.

ScepticTankAvenger3991d ago

I also didn't say I don't want the magic back, I'm just saying I expect this. DMC, Splinter Cell, Tomb Raider, Fallout 3, etc., changes happen as time goes on sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. When the game comes out, who knows? It could turn out to have been a good idea.

10 Jump Scares You Will Never Recover From

Jo from GamersFTW writes: 'Picture this: there you are on a sunny Sunday afternoon playing a video game, relaxing, having fun. Then all of sudden something jumps at you from off screen, or makes the most horrific noise known to man and you find yourself staring in horror at what just happened on your television screen. Jump scares, love them or hate them they always make you feel uneasy but strangely wanting more.'

Number seven made me laugh – ‘Outlast – The Whole Game’

I think the spin off, Whistle Blower, was actually scarier though.

Nice to see the Piano from Mario in there too, definitely one to remember.

Outlast is an emotional roller-coaster of a game! Can't say I've played the other one, and after you saying its worse not sure I will either!!

Just had a look, Outlast: Whistleblower served as the DLC prequel. I remember it being pretty good if you can stomach it =P haha!

My personal favourite was from Resident Evil 3, when you're in the relative calm of the police station and then - BAM!! - out of nowhere Nemesis smashes through that tiny window at the bottom of the staircase.

Man I jumped so much my controller flew up in the air, Jill was butchered, and I couldn't recollect myself for hours afterwards. Classic.

What a great idea for a feature!!! Would of liked to have send Silent Hill and Until Dawn... scary stuff

Maple223143d ago

It was really tough trying to narrow them down, there are so many great games that scare the bejeezus out of you!

c00lvilKid693143d ago

Definitely, Until Dawn has some great jump scares. Don’t mention Silent Hill, I’m still upset about them axing the latest instalment :(

I think it is a blessing, there would be so many deaths relating to that game... heart attacks would sky rocket

Omg the Resident Evil dogs gave me nightmares! One part of the game I dreaded the most.
