Touch Arcade: Like many gamers, my three best friends and I have a long-standing gaming tradition. Every holiday, we gather for our perennial New Year's Eve LAN party. In an ideal world, we tear down our gaming rigs on New Year's Eve, drop them off at one friend's house with plenty of space, go to dinner at our favorite Tex-Mex place, and then ring in the New Year over a good 8 to 10 hours of gaming nirvana fueled by salty snacks and sugary drinks.

The future of games, for years now, has been connected. This year's biggest blockbusters - from Titanfall to Watch Dogs to Destiny - are about bringing people together online, weaving players' experiences into one another's in new and pervasive ways.
As long as Nintendo exists, there will always be a place to find many local multiplayer experiences.
The person who disagreed is bitter. Nintendo has always been about local, I just wish they were not so behind with online and M rated games!
Mario Kart 8 looks like a good start to changing their attitude towards online, at least.

4 player splitscreen on shooters, racing games must be a norm since forever. Don't know why developers abandon this feature in most modern games. Also slitscreen coop is always an amazing experience with a partner, family, friend etc.
I don't think it will ever die as long as people have friends and family, but online multiplayer is definitely more convenient.
Forza, Halo, Gears and Fable have another thing in common besides being part of the core MS games, they all feature local multiplayer.
local multiplayer has not gone anywhere, it is just the split screen that is no longer viable for technical reasons that has screwed local multiplayer for shooters and racers but the Fifa's and Tekken have never stopped being played locally
I hear you! Taking turns with pair play in Tekken tag2 has never been so fun, especially with friends & family. Tekken did co-op right!
