Behind the Classics: Amy Hennig Talks Soul Reaver Secrets

Posted by Sid Shuman // Social Media Manager -

Ah, Soul Reaver. I remember it well! This gruesome little gem made quite the splash when it landed on PSone in 1999. As the wounded, ostracized vampire Raziel, your goal was to avenge yourself against the corrupt vampire lord Kain and restore balance to the decaying world of Nosgoth. I particularly remember the game’s inspired approach to combat; your vampiric foes couldn’t be killed by ordinary means, so after weakening them with hand-to-hand combat you had to hurl their broken bodies onto a sharp stake or into a patch of sunlight to finish them off. The level design was also a knockout, as Raziel was able to phase-shift into a spectral realm in order to bypass obstacles or solve puzzles.

I hope SE brings back Legacy of Kain

Emilio_Estevez4205d ago

They've done a few pieces like this recently, and I'm of the opinion that there is always a reason for everything. They are either a) gauging interest for a new game or HD version or b) getting ready to announce one.

beerkeg4205d ago (Edited 4205d ago )

Crystal Dynamics made it, Sony had nothing to do with it.

EDIT:@Baka-akaB

Doh, thanks for correcting me. Sorry NYC_Gamer.

NYC_Gamer4205d ago (Edited 4205d ago )

I am talking about Square Enix..They own the rights to the franchise now since bought Eidos and all the assets.

Baka-akaB4205d ago (Edited 4205d ago )

He is talking about Square Enix you know ... aka the current Eidos and owner of Crystal Dynamics

HarryMasonHerpderp4205d ago

With original voice actors for Kain and Raziel don't forget =)
Wouldn't be the same without them.

Amy Henning is one of the best writers .

Christopher4205d ago (Edited 4205d ago )

She's good, but I wouldn't say the best (or one of them). She really faltered on a lot of the elements of Uncharted 3 and there are plot holes in her other games this gen.

Walker4205d ago

I told one of the best, not the best buddy .

Christopher4205d ago

I still wouldn't put her "in the best" category. Unless your "the best" category is like the Top 50 Video Game Writers. Mine is only a Top Ten.

kungfuian4205d ago

@ goodno, I totally disagree, I personally can't think of any better writers aside from the guys over at valve and maybe BioWare, she is easily 1 of the world's best game writers. also I don't think the dialogue or story in uncharted 3 was lacking, but the balance between gameplay and cinema was not quite as well paced. even still the characters and story are leaps and bounds above 99 percent of most gaming garbage.

The 7 Best Vampire Games: Embrace the Night

Vampire games are making a comeback of late, and gamers hoping this is a new trend should look back at the 7 best vampire games ever made.

SimpleSlave17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

What is a list? A miserable little pile of scribbles.

A Best Vampire Game list and no Bloodborne. A bold choice, indeed.

The_Hooligan17d ago

IMO, I wouldn't consider bloodborne a vampire game. Long story short, It's more about the side effects of the blood experiment and the influence of the red moon, than actually being a vampire.

SimpleSlave17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Yes, Bloodborne is about Vampires. It's not just the undertones, or the imagery or the obvious parallels, it's pretty much everything and then some. Here's the thing, Bram Stoker's Dracula is also not a Vampire novel. Why? Because technically Vampires from folklore were something else.

But based on our updated view of what Vampires are, informed in one way or another by Bram Stoker's Dracula, Nosferatu The Vamprye, and many other stories, and combined with From Software's own interpretation, we can say with confidence that Bloodborne IS a Vampire story. Sure, there are other elements, but the central narrative is pretty much Vampires. Which would make it THE Vampire game. I mean, Cainhurst Castle. Anyways, that's how I see it.

But to each their and we'll agree to disagree.

MEGANE17d ago

Thats the best Vampire game ever, but enough talk, have at you!.

SimpleSlave17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Absolutely... Now, die monster! You don't belong in this thread!

I've lost all hype for Bloodlines 2. It's going to be an action game.

Barlos17d ago

No Blood Omen? Even today it's one of my favourite vampire games. We could really do with a release on modern platforms.

Relientk7717d ago

I really enjoyed Vampyr. The combat is a little clunky and could use some work. However, the story, characters, dialog. setting, and pretty much everything else in the game is great.

Amy Hennig's Star Wars Game Taps Director of the Infamously Cancelled Star Wars 1313

The director of the infamously scrapped Star Wars 1313 has joined the team working on Amy Hennig's upcoming Star Wars game at Skydance New Media.

Garethvk309d ago

I was at the announcement for it at E3. They had us in a side hall conference room that was just a couple rows of benches. When the gameplay and video demo started the side walls looked like windows that showed us dropping down levels in our ship to 1313.

rlow1309d ago

Glad he’s onboard, 1313 was so ahead of its time from what was shown. This bodes well for her game. Looking forward to what they are cooking up.

Profchaos308d ago (Edited 308d ago )

After 1313 cancellation and the new trilogy I think it's safe to say Disney was the worst thing that could have happened to star wars

Dirtnapstor308d ago (Edited 308d ago )

Well I hope the protagonist is not an angry, bitter woman, who is mad at the world and despises the need for men, or men themselves.
