Call of Duty regains No.1 but chart sales continue to fall

No new releases and post-xmas period sees sales slump: Activision's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has climbed back up to the number one position in the UK all formats charts, as sales across retail continue to fall following the Christmas period.

Sales for the acclaimed first-person shooter were only down 21 per cent, compared to EA's FIFA 2008 which slipped to number two with a sales drop of 50 per cent, and Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed which suffered a 43 per cent fall in sales, although it managed to move up the charts to number three.

EA's The Simpsons Game drops to number four this week with a 53 per cent decline in sales, while Activision's Guitar Hero III manages it's highest chart position at number five, despite sales dropping 30 per cent. At number six this week is Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 with sales down 42 per cent, and EA's Need for Speed: Pro Street is at seven with a fall in sales of 46 per cent.

Position's eight and nine are occupied by Dr Kawashima's Brain Training and More Brain Training from Dr Kawashima (sales down 26 per cent and 39 per cent, respectively), with Sega's The Golden Compass at ten with a drop in sales of 51 per cent.

No new releases have entered the entire top 40 this week, with the decline in sales across the board a reflection of the traditionally quiet January sales month.

Paying Extra For Early Access Cannot Be The Industry Norm

Charging for early access has started to become a regular practice in several AAA games, and the gaming community should not tolerate this.

CrimsonWing6930m ago

Don’t uh… don’t pay for it then? 🤷‍♂️ It’s 3 days early, let people who can’t wait pony up to pay for early access. I’d hope people have more control over themselves if they don’t want to pay extra. I personally, do not see an issue with the option. If I’m hyped for a game and they give you early access, I’ll pay. If it’s something I can wait to play on “actual release” I won’t pay extra. It’s as simple as that.

Crows9025m ago

Except your entirely mistaken if you think it's "early access"

Theyre just charging you extra to play it on release. So gullible.

Crows9026m ago

It's not early access...it's playing on release...early access is when the game isn't finished and needs a little more time...you also get it months in advance.

Let's not get confused here..

Microsoft has been doing premium edition early access for awhile(Forza and Starfield recently) ...so why is it an issue now when Ubisoft does it?

It can't be the gamepass excuse as Ubisoft has day one subscriptions as well.

Not defending Ubi. It's a crappy thing to do. But it's only one Hutt mission. There are other Hutt missions.

No matter how good this game turns out to be, it is a wait for a deep sale purchase for me.

anast11m ago

UBI games are so heavily monetized that it's tough to buy their games day 1.

CrimsonWing6926m ago(Edited 26m ago)

Vote with your wallet. The only reason they do this is to get extra money and it appears that it works. If the game is good, I’ll shell out some extra money and buy it. If the game sucks I won’t even bother. You can save up money and buy it, wait for a sale and buy it, or don’t pay at all and enjoy your life. You got options.
