Former Xbox 360 exec’s $1B pain and advice to entrepreneurs

Humans make mistakes. Rarely, however, does a single error rack up $1 billion in damages as it did in the case of the Xbox 360′s red-ring-of-death issue. That, of course, is the dark period early in the console’s history when, according to some tests, over 15 percent of the hardware units were experiencing failure.

Former president of Microsoft’s Entertainment and Device Division, Robbie Bach, called that point in time “the most painful thing in my life.”

Oh it was way more than that.

That part had me cracking up. Every person I met who had an Xbox360 had atleast 2 consoles that got the RRoD. I mean, if it was only 15% as they say, the 3 year warranty wouldn't even be necessary.

"Over 15 percent" that could mean 99 percent...

dcbronco1921d ago

Even if they had said 30% I would doubt it. I think it was over a third. Maybe even 40%.

kreate1921d ago

They've been saying 1 billion loss since 2009.... Now is 2012. I guess no more xbox got broken after that.

Anyones xbox got the rrod 2009-2012?

n4gisatroll1921d ago

My buddy had 2 break in that time span. Actually, his slim just broke.

Pretty sure it got to like 56% at one point, 5 times I had to send mine back, not one of them lasted more than 6 months, new ones are a hell of a lot better though

sovietsoldier1922d ago (Edited 1922d ago )

they hope with the next x-box that the 1 billion doesn't turn to 1 trillion!

dark-hollow1922d ago

if the new xbox is anything reliable like the 360 slim then rest assured.

through the crappy early 2 models that i went through, the new slim is very reliable.

dcbronco1921d ago

Hollow, apparently two people are living under your bed and know that your Slim has failed. You should check on that.

Dms20121922d ago

Yeah, I don't think 15% would have amounted to a billion dollar mistake. I love my 360, but lets be honest here.

Hufandpuf1922d ago

My first one burned out on me. It had burn marks inside the casing and metal and it would destroy my games when I played them. Since then I bought the Xbox Elite and have had no problems with it.
