NPD April 2012: Game sales plummet by 32% in US during April

The NPD Group has released its April sales report for the US games industry, and the numbers for retail are not pretty. Total video game sales fell off a cliff, dropping 32 percent to $630.4 million. Software sales alone really nosedived by 42 percent, totaling $307.2 million (including PC retail titles), while hardware fell 32 percent to $189.7 million. (Industry, NPD, PS3, Tag Invalid, Wii U, Xbox 360)

Hardware and software sales dropped for April. Are we ready for next gen consoles?

If Prototype 2 was the highest selling game then software sales all around must have been VERY low. For one thing thats only six days of sales for P2 and there was a general low level of hype for the game

P2 was the best *multiplatform* (PS360) game of the months and "Last April, the top seven titles outsold the top-selling title this year"

A price cut ASAP! and get those new consoles ready for 2013 for the sake of the whole gaming industry

Call of Duty still ranks high in the top 10

I like to think it's because of all the corporate shenanigans going on in the industry right now and this is somehow going to teach them the error of their ways, but it's probably just the absolutely terrible economy in general.

It's partially economy but it's also because there weren't any solid new games, other than Prototype 2. It was mostly older titles.
Bimkoblerutso  +   874d ago
Well, there was also Xenoblade and the Witcher 2, but I suppose you're right. Great as those games are, they're both kind of niche titles.

Them big companies like Crapcon and EA are now getting their payback for ripping thousands of gamers off

Dismal numbers.

Time for a new generation, the hype has left this one.

It's the diablo 3 effect! People are saving pennies for D3 in less than a week!

Lol that could definitely have something to do with it. But i doubt it was THAT major of an impact :D

Oh, and i know you were joking.

I'm sure it was a lack of games, as well as a lack of a proper system price drop in quite some time. I have no doubt we will be seeing some consoles loose a few $$'s this year. The sooner the better.

Oh, and Sony. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD RELEASE MORE GAMES ON THE VITA!! Its gasping for something new. Don't get me wrong, I love my Vita, and play it regularly. However I want something new. Cant wait for Gravity Rush.

The less than decent economy, poor release schedules, and finals time may have something to do with it. Though, these consoles are indeed aging.

I know I contributed $59.98 in April, which is far less than usual. So I'm not surprised.

We are in for another crash

its time for some new consoles, i think NPD needs to start tracking some digital stuff as well though. Because soon nintendo will have digital full retail releases, as well as Sony and Microsoft.
Spenok  +   873d ago
I wouldn't be surprised if including Digital sales from Origin, Steam, PSN + XBLA and other digital sales sites this would be a completely different story.

Now about tracking them, I'm not entirely sure if these sites and services release their sales numbers. If they do, than they definitely need to start properly adding them into their numbers.

dont forget spring time is really week in terms of games and sales, the big season is the fall.

outside of prototype 2 and the witcher 2....
was there anything new worth buying.......

isn't august-november the best months for game sales

i'm curious isnt this the case every year
Hicken  +   874d ago
Well, there's a lot of big stuff coming out this month, but you're right: there wasn't much worth buying last month, so it's not really a surprise that sales would be down.

AND there's the fact that lots of people just don't have the money to spend on gaming like in the past. Or if they do, they're being more careful with that money.

thanks for the reply
i agree

starhawk
ghost recon
diablo 3
sorcery
max payne
dragon's dogma
resistance vita

should definitely boost May sales significantly above april's and if not then hey lets start cranking out new consoles

Xenoblade is well worth the purchase.....anyone on the fence should deff go get it, considering no one is buying anything else it seems by the numbers lol.... J/K. But I highly reccomend it, if you have a Wii and need a good game to play !
