Microsoft has just issued its NPD reaction statement and revealed that the Xbox 360 sold through 236,000 units for the month of April, marking the 16th consecutive month that the console has topped all others in the US.
That's weak, but it seems like April is pretty weak for everyone.
Wow, Xbox is killing it in the US (Stealth edit) did not have US when i first wrote my comment, lol I want to see how both Sony and MS change their next Gen consoles, PS3 is killing it in Europe and JP while the 360 kills it in the US. How will both of these console attempt to penetrate those Markets?
Good sales but the numbers are down from last year (297k April 2011). Wonder how the PS3 sold for the month? Sold pretty good in March in the US. Edit: Source for my future disagrees http://gamerinvestments.com...
With Kinect selling like hotcakes i dont see the 360 loosing steam, at least not in the USA until the next Xbox. I really do want to see the next gen Consoles. Going to have to wait until next E3
@slaton24 I Dont think that is true, The Slim is a good upgrade plus Kinect.
the console with the least amount of exclusives sold the most? I'd also like to know how many of those are the 4GB models.
@Dante Of course the numbers are going to decrease. This gen is coming to end. Everyone that wants a 360 pretty much already have one.
@MasFlowKiller Kinect reached its peak last year, no doubt is helping X360, but it's not as big as everyone thinks = wii like Sales aren't great, but then again X360 is in the market for 7 years, so new gen needs to happen *soon*
@F7U12 - Trials Evolution alone would be a big reason for me to pick up a 360 if I didn't already own one.
I recently sold my 360 but i just purchased a HDhomerun Prime and right now the 360 is the only Media Center extender that allows for live TV without the need to a PC. PLUS comcast is not allowing ESPN live streaming so that cool too
looks like another month where people didnt get excited about all those AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA must have sony exclusives that n4gs fanboys rave continually about....
@tokugawa Why you Trolling bro? The videogame industry is about having fun bro, not about hate. You most be doing it wrong bro.
I don't think it's weak. Summer is right around the corner and a lot of people like to spend time outdoors, not sitting in front of the TV like they do in colder weather.
If only this was really true in this day and age, regarding people playing outside more. A few studies have shown that kids spend a lot more time indoors on computers and consoles now compared to ten years ago, including during warmer periods. I think the major reason is because major game releases tend to aim for end of year, Holiday season, releases. The summer has become a lower point not because people don't play games enough during those times, but because if they push it another 3-4 months, they will hit the higher sales period.
So arguably sales in the UK should always be good right? Weather over here is always unpredictable. We have Downpours and then BAM! Next day is bright and sunny... : /
Gotta give them credit, they held there own this GEN despite all the negativity and criticism. It's just crazy, I Remember yrs ago remarks- " ps3 is gonna pass it sales wise by 09 then 10 11 12". Who would thought this coming in to this gen wow. Guess competition is great...
careful, fanboys might hear you... whoa.. u have 1 bubble.. apparently they already have.
But of course someone like you have to mention Sony in a Microsoft article, right? It's perfectly fine to call out Sony fans for mentioning Microsoft in a Sony article but when it comes to a Microsoft article, its okay to call out Sony. That's okay. At least Sony fans are enjoying games instead of bragging about sales like its the lottery drawing or something. Fanboys crack me up.
My fellow American, we observe today as a victory for all Amercans - symbolizing an end, as well as a beginning - signifying renewal, as well as change. For I have sworn before you and Almighty Gaming God the same solemn oath our forebears prescribed when they bought the orginal XboX. The world is very different now. For 360 holds in its slick black caseing the power to abolish all forms of haters. And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe as some people cant accept that the Xbox is here to stay - the belief that MS is evil and 360 gamers are sheeps which is spread by all anti-Xbox gamers. We dare not forget today that the Xbox has made a name for it self. Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans gamers - born in this century, tempered by rabbid people, disciplined by a hard and bitter community, proud of our American heritage - and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of our love for Call of Duty and Halo to which this Nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world. Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of the Xbox brand. This much we pledge - and more. under
The 360 is selling good for a console on its final stretch
Not sure I'd call it a final stretch - it's not like there's a new Xbox launching this year. It'll be holiday 2013 at the earliest.
still its even by your description last stretch really.
Meh, less final stretch, more home stretch, the end is in sight but we've still got a ways to go.
But not for a system which gets reinvented every few years. Can't really give MS points for developing it as a game system, but their ad campaigns seems to be doing the trick.
"But not for a system which gets reinvented every few years". Like ps3 slim? New and More convenient models of hardware will always attract owners of the previous model to upgrade. Simple business strategy...
Or like the PS3 Slim? PS2 Slim? PSONE? PSPGo? Let's be honest, Sony is far more guilty of this than Microsoft. It's not a bad thing either, it does generally give the consumer something they like and it also generates sales where there might not have been any if they didn't "revitalize" the given system. I am curious what they're going to do with the Vita...
the casuals are buying.. Only hardcore gamers realize it needs an upgrade. If this keeps happening new console will come 2017. If the $99 plan works it's over.
The $99 plan will work because most Americans don't read the fine print before siging on the dotted line. I for one can tell it's a horrible plan that sucks money from your account faster than a leech can suck blood.
Ok... doesn't the $99 plan include Xbox Live Gold, as well as access to some of the other premium monthly features like Hulu Plus and such? From what I read I thought that was the case. If it includes things like Hulu, Netflix, etc., it actually would be a bit of a discount over time for those who plan to use those things. And the $99 plan was being targeted at more casual people looking to use this as their entertainment hub. If I'm wrong, then yes it's not a great deal. But if I'm remembering what I read correctly it's not half bad.
Dude, the $99 plan will cost a person around $450 by the time the 2 years is over. http://www.pcworld.com/arti...
I really thought Kinect Star Wars was going to be a massive seller. Even though the game is terrible.
Aside from exclusives, I don't see the appeal of the Xbox over the ps3. I mean right out of the box the ps3 can pretty much do what the Xbox can do , and do it for free.
But with cross-game chat and less arrogance...
like cross chat and a unified online service? And free online is probably one of the reasons why they continue to lose money. they can't keep this up forever.
Its called ads, marketing, and uninformed consumers. By all rights, as Reddfoxx points out, backlash from RROD should have killed consumer confidence in the 360, but MS was able to fix it.
So every Xbox owner is an uninformed idiot? Talk about elitism.
Of course not, but a lot of what MS does tends to exploit people who don't do research. Like the Arcade SKUs and having expensive HHDs waiting for when those people needed them. The whole thing with having to buy time on XBL and the discounts that can be found if you only look, which is something a parent's not going to do as their kid pesters them for another month of online. Then again, on of the reasons I became a "fanboy" is because early on the 360 camp was tearing into itself over RROD. Attacking people who were looking for help over the issue before MS went into action. Its the main reason in fact. And yes, there are PS3, PC and Wii people who are just that stupid and elitist.
"Like the Arcade SKUs and having expensive HHDs waiting for when those people needed them" Oh you mean like the vita and it's overpriced SD cards? And it even worse because there is no vita model with a respectable amount of internal memory so you HAVE to buy those cards. "Then again, on of the reasons I became a "fanboy" is because early on the 360 camp was tearing into itself over RROD. Attacking people who were looking for help over the issue before MS went into action." Again with those "camps". Those idiots on both side do not represent the majority of Xbox owners.
And yet here you are reacting to a comment not directed towards "intelligent" gamers. So what does that say about you? And yeah, the Vita memory card thing is BS, is all the more stupid because one is absolutely needed as soon as you buy the handheld, but then again there are few if any in the Sony camp defending it. If they then they're dumb.
lol, Godmars just read Chunkylover53 comment again, every Sony fan needs an excuse why 360 is winning the US market which Sony previously dominated, RROD didn't ruin consumer confidence because micro ate the bill....as they should have due to their faulty hardware, if you know anything about historical consumer trends then you would know that consumers don't necessarily give up on a brand for a mistake, they usually measure a company by how they respond= fair compensation, if done right can save just about any brand. Micro is winning the mindshare in America as the console for the best online experience which is a very popular feature for teens and young adults, you may disagree with which is better online but most here at least believe this, and that's why 360 is winning here, simple as that.
I own both but sway more towards my xbox360 as it has the better online setup. I know you have to shell out for it, but I can afford that and will continue to do so for the better experience. I don't hate my PS3, or have any regrets buying it - but it is really only used to play the odd single player exclusive that takes my interest. I assume other people find it the same, it's not that I am uninformed or an idiot... I just don't share your narrow minded unthought out point of view.
kurt russel i couldnt have wrote that any better. my thoughts exactly
PS3 had better hardware, yes, but that doesn't mean it's the better console. With the huge lead in sales Xbox had in the early part of the generation, people with both got used to getting their multiplayer games on 360 to be able to play with more people. Multiplatform games still usually do better on 360 that I've seen, especially multiplayer ones like 360. PS3 has more exclusives and generally more GOOD exclusives, but I'd argue that those good exclusives are usually focused on single-play or creation, not on competitive multiplayer. In contrast, Microsoft's top 2 exclusives are all about competitive and cooperative multiplayer. In this day and age, if you can become the multiplayer console of choice, you won the battle, imo. Even if the stable of PS3 single-player exclusives is far more impressive. And their marketing and their integration of online features have seemed to stay slightly ahead of PS3. And they pay for timed exclusives on multiplatform stuff. Which just supports the trend of people picking 360 for the multiplatform stuff. Makes sense really, even if it doesn't seem fair to Sony, who did a good job this generation.
The most popular and overrated FPS multiplayer game is a multiplatform. Now Call of duty of course looks like an xbox exclusive thanks to MS marketing, while Halo is just about the only other big game they have. Don't know what other game you're talking about...
Sales are down and sales are even worse in the software department not because of the decline of the 'hardcore gamer' moving into more social games but because there where not any 'quality games' games out their that appealed to a lot of people, including me... If you make a good game it will do good simple as that in my opinion (of course)
Weak numbers all around, but its not as grim as it looks. These consoles were coming off their best years ever in 2011. It was going to be hard to top those. Also, I think a lot of people are holding off in an attempt to wait and see what E3 brings and the possibility of new consoles. On the other hand, in the United States anyway, its an election year and there is a ton of uncertainty in this economy. People are just tighter with their money.
As much as I want to stay positive these are some brutally bad numbers... looks like once again everyone is down year over year. I think this now marks the 4th month in a row we have seen hardware across the board selling less then the year before. We may not see new hardware announcements from Sony or MS this year but you can bet you will see price cuts and more value added to bundles to try and jump start sales. The $99 MS deal was just the start based on this. Sony should be next to price cut or add bundles... MS probably has more bundle offerings coming for E3 too.. Nintendo may have no choice but to give the Wii away at this point.
Nah, I be surprised if sales weren't down this far into the consoles life cycle, most who want one have one...by now most sales are 2nd or 3rd time customers buying another for a 1000 different reasons ( cousin broke his moving furniture, etc) and casual gaming late adopters or very "frugal" folks who only buy " toys" when they get a huge discount at their local market.
Wow...some pretty dismal numbers if you think it through. Basically just over 500,000 units for the home consoles sold (excluding handhelds). I am wondering if the Wii managed to break 100k units this month?
ferrari sells about 6500 cars a year.... toyota is aiming for another 10 million cars sold this year. people sometimes make concessions due to price, doesnt account for what the product can do.
wah wah wah is all I could read from that.
Imo the ps3 is a Yugo and the 360 a Honda. They both need some improvement but they are getting to the end of this generation. The reason the ps3 is so low in my book is you can't do the main thing which is drive without going through install this and download that. I expect some updates but not for every single game to have to install it since it can't play off the disc like the 360 can and then the constant firmware updats and its painfully slow compared to the 360. This is my opinion but they are both good consoles once you get to the gaming part of it but its so painfully slow to do anything on the xmb.
funny how I turned my ps3 on everyday this week and there are no installs, updates and slow xmb. Your ps3 must be made in Malaysia lol
@eferreira My roomate is from Malaysia, it's not as backwards as you seem to think. They have Americans traveling there quite often for medical procedures, apparently. Because they have such a high success rate and lower malpractice insurance rates, so you can get the same procedure done with better quality and less money. And to make this comment relate to the story... not surprised by the numbers, I bet it sells better in Malaysia too.
There you have it folks the 360 outsells it's competion in the U.S. That once had a stronghold in NA.. Good job MS.
So what did the ps3 and wii sell in the US?
PS3 hasn't even hit 199$ yet! still alot more sales to come from it.
More Sales doesn't mean better games.
more bad news for the core 360 gamer lol M$ will never have any games besides halo for em why bother when theyre happy with cod map packs ROFL
I own around 54 Xbox 360 games, all of which are pretty fun and well received. 3 out of 54 of those are Halo games. And I have never purchased a CoD map pack nor will I ever. So remind me again, how is 360 topping the console sales-chart bad for me? And how am I suffering for lack of games?
if your happy with multiplatforms and the annual halo/gearz spamming then good for you
Nintendo recently announced its first annual operating loss in its history as a public company. Sluggish Wii sales and a strong Japanese yen hurt Nintendo—not to mention a rocky rollout for the Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo Ending Its 3D Television Service for the 3DS. The Sorry State of Mario & Sonic, Gaming’s Worst Team-Up. Sony Hits 30 Year Low. The only console doing well at the moment is the 360.
Just because Sony is doing bad as a whole doesn't mean the PlayStation division is doing bad. The PS division is the only division not losing but making money. The ps3 is doing well also.
Is the PlayStation division profitable now? Cool, I didn't know that had changed. I remember a stockholder meeting from like 2 years back, where they told stockholders they hoped to be profitable by like 2013 or something... and I was like sheesh, come on guys, at least set your hopes on an earlier date!
Sony's gaming division is NOT making money. It's not because of the ps3 or ps2 sales( which they still get a bit) it is because of the money now invested in the vita. It was even stated from Sony that they don't expect to make money from the vita or " recoup" for 3-5 years! So even though items are being sold and they are getting money from sales, if you get 20 million from gaming division sales, but you invested 100 million in a product... IT STILL DOESN'T MAKE MONEY. I say this a lot lately... Sony is in bigger trouble then what people think.
The casuals seem to have moved from WII to the 360...bad choice. Then again i need great exclusives plus good 3rd party support to be happy with my console.
I think a lot of sales have to do with buying the console most of your friends have. I own both and usually play PS3, however I have a few buddies who only own a 360. With higher 360 sales in the US, chances are people you know own one and if you want to play them online, you'll get a 360 also.
